Having done a couple of thousand hours of scud running in the Rockies, I'm aware of a number of reasons why it isn't for everybody. One example out of many, is if you're following the Alaska Highway southbound past Muncho Lake, and you miss the highway turning into a crack in the mountain wall, you cross the Toad River and your next crack leads into a box canyon. There's a gravel road running south off Hwy 97 and into that box canyon to increase the confusion. Unless you've got good vis, or you really know the ground, it's an easy mistake to make. It's also always fatal because you fly around a corner into a wall. If you can do a good hammerhead turn on no notice you've got a slim chance. I flew a C-185 (70MPH, some flap down) around that box canyon searching for an American whose "scud running" in the mountains didn't pan out. There were quite a few general aviation airplanes embedded in the canyon walls, like lawn-darts, all at around 6-7000' ASL. I also remember sitting in the pilot's room in Fort Nelson, BC, with four other professionals who flew in the Rocky Mountains for a living every single day. Those pilots, and I, thought that it was too windy to fly in the mountains that day. Along comes the overloaded Cessna, flown by a dentist from Nebraska, en route to Fairbanks. We tracked his flight and were relieved when he made it. Pure dumb luck. This is a great video, and it's an easy trip for an experienced pilot, but don't disrespect it. You'll die.
Liked the video, and have read one of your books. Laughed about the cookies, isn't that the Mn way, you say no twice, and they offer three times. At least that is how hospitality works up in the northern part of the state.
Small world after all. I just talked to you on the phone the other day about a job at your skydive operation. The UA-cam algorithm brought me here. Good to put a face to the name
my first flight instructor job was in New Mexico, then after a year there I moved to Alaska to flight instruct here! took longer because I was in a car though
What's our plan for an engine out in the Cascades? I usually follow a highway, but it doesn't look like you're following any particular pass, so what's the plan?
I won’t scud run in the relatively flat Midwest. Not doing it in or near the mountains. But I’m a purely VFR only type of guy as I don’t want flying to be anymore stressful then necessary
Great visuals, thanks for sharing. I’ve taken a few pistons transcon, and it was always an adventure. You see a lot and get to think about a lot of things more easily managed in a jet, but it’s a fun challenge.
Nice video! Flying to Alaska is on my bucket list. I just got back from a trip from Michigan to the Bahamas in my 182. One question for you, I noticed that 182 has a vent tube on both wings. I've never seen that before. What model 182 is it?
We weent from Bellen New Mexico to Elko Nevada, Caldwell Idaho, some small airport north of Seattle I don't remember, Ketchikan AK, Yakutat AK, Anchorage. The flight up from Seattle to Anchorage was amazing!
Man thats a big mistake for a pilot! No cookies😢 I would imagine flying over the mountains. You would have a satellite phone for any problem? The video is awesome and the scenery is as well.
Way too much music. Couldn't finish the video. Not saying the video isn't a good quality video, I just prefer the cockpit videos that focus on the sights and sounds inside the cockpit.
Great stuff! We can all learn something from your experiences so keep the videos coming. Your book was great as well
Must have been an epic trip Sir, thanks for the video!
One of the best trips I've ever taken!
So many famous last words in this episode.
Beautiful!
This was a great video Kerry. Really looking forward to seeing of your adventures!!
I just got back from an amazing flying trip to South Africa and Namibia. I'll be posting another video soon!

been there done that
beautiful flight, you guys are living the dream! stay safe guys.
Very cool! I'd love to see more videos like this and learn more about your ferry adventures.
I'll be making videos about my ferry flying adventures. You can also read about them in my best selling memoir "ferry pilot".
Liked the video, and have read one of your books. Laughed about the cookies, isn't that the Mn way, you say no twice, and they offer three times. At least that is how hospitality works up in the northern part of the state.
That's how he was brought up. I still wanted cookies though.
This was a great video loved it!
Cheers 🥂 Kerry here’s to the capable C182 and Alaska! 😅
Small world after all.

REALLY small world! Keep building those hours and we'll see you soon.

great trip mate
Glad you enjoyed it
Beautiful scenery and well done photography north of Seattle portion. I hope to make that same route next year in my RV.
You should!
Kerry ✌️ love your videos was watching dangerous flights yesterday over again 😮amazing

So cool! It's amazing HOW MUCH MORE interesting the scenery is at these altitudes rather than, say, from 30 to 40 thousand feet in a jet liner.
Schell Creek Range is in Nevada, just over the line from Utah by about 50 miles.
Hi. Nice meeting you at #Lapa Lange Namibia. Your storytelling had us all spellbound!
So half you liked it! I loved Lapa Lange!
Crazy Alaska had all the good weather lol... Loved the video!
Saw that forecast for good weather along the coast and boogied!
Cool views! You should do a mtn survival episode similar to the life raft.
Awesome video. I’m curious about flight plan and what route you took from Seattle to Ketchikan and thoughts
We pretty much went direct, staying over the mountains as much as we could.
Fun!

I've flown that route a few times in a jet and turboprop but down and dirty is the way to go!
Keep a eye out for a 1959 Cessna 310C, N1812H it's missing between Juneau and Anchorage, it went missing Oct. 16 1972. I expect you know the story.
Was that Robert's flight?
If you are ever in Mauston look me up. It would be an honor to fly with you!!
Where was the touchdown?!
How many flight hrs was this journey? Looks like it took 3 days, but how many total flight hrs?
Don't remember for sure. Probably 12?
Does the aircraft have a usb port for charging the ipad or are you using a power brick?
Power brick.
Aero Services in Ketchikan had two broken AVGas trucks most of the winter, good thing about Petersburg is that it saved you probably $4 a gallon.
It would have been nice if they'd told us right up front instead of stringing us along for 2 hours.

I think it was a Q model. The 1981 282 I was flying in Namibia last week had 2 vent tubes as well.
What route and stops did you guys make?

@@KerryDMcCauley Did you have to file an EAPIS for this trip? I see you didn't stop in Canada but just curious if you filed anyway.
Nope. If you don't stop in Canada you need to file.
Connor looks familiar. I wonder if I’ve met him at a DZ 🤘
He worked at Skydive San Diego fro a couple of winters plus at skydive Twin Cities.
Turned down cookies ? Does he even have a pilots license ? 😂😂😂😂
Right?
👍✅
Man thats a big mistake for a pilot! No cookies😢 I would imagine flying over the mountains. You would have a satellite phone for any problem? The video is awesome and the scenery is as well.
Connor will never live that down!
Son, when a young lady offers you cookies you say "Yes, thank you very much."
Then you tell her they are the best cookies you've ever had.
And THEN you go ahead and taste one. Ha ha!

Thanks for the input. I didn't have time to get a good way to record cockpit audio on this trip. My videos have been getting better I think.
Music has ruined countless UA-cam videos.
