I'm living in my fourth place in Japan. It's a communal living space, know as a "sharehouse" here. My particular sharehouse has over 200 rooms. Whilst it's a cool idea for like-minded people - in practice it's a pain in the butt when people forget the "share" part. Leaving dirty dishes in the sink, keeping keys for the communal bicycles, sleeping in the theatre room so others can't use it and so on. I'll do a tour on my channel soon. Thanks for the different vids, Dylan!

I agree with themoviecapo: how is this sustainable? I love the idea of this community, but why wasn't adobe used instead of concrete? Why aren't they utilizing the black water pond for fast growing trees or bamboo or hydroponic gardens after the water has been purified via the aerobic/anaerobic bacteria phase. Bamboo is fast growing, sustainable and an excellent building and insolation material as well as being able to use it for cloth. So much potential here that's either not shown or not being done.

They need to build a farming tower building and find a way to get sustainable water. Maybe create sea water desalination ponds, using sun to evaporate and desalination of water and can also use the resulting salt to sell.

Sustainable, how? Concrete when it could be made with either rammed earth or clay homes. Water and food production, not even started after 50 years. A Nice and flawed architecture’s dream project.

Arcosanti was meant to be a prototype and proof of concept to the architectural world that an arcology was not only sustainable but feasible as well during the 1970's when the idea of implementing an arcology was gaining a more realistic traction. This project was just the first pragmatic step in that direction.
The principle design philosophy that Arcosanti went with favors concrete as a reliable building material to convince a general audience of its use. Just as importantly however, it would have given it an approachable image that said audience could digest without leaving a negative connection to other questionable living styles that were still popular but controversial during the 70's such as communes (which ironically enough Arcosanti somewhat ended up becoming as time went on), or even as a haven associated with radical pro-eco-peservation groups during the 80's and 90's. Image was important for this project, especially with the advent of self-contained living atmospheres such as Biosphere 2 (also conveniently located in Arizona as well) coming to fruition to prove its scientific and technological worth in some respect acting as an indirect complement to Arcosanti's mission goal.
I just hope that one day the people running the arcology take it out of its conservation phase and scale it into what it was meant to truly be: A true arcology.

Visited Arcosanti in '99 and was so impressed with those that already lived there. Self sustained living, yet cooperatives were so innovative even then. The artisans and pioneers! Would consider if I didn't live with a bunch that saw it as 'hippie' living! :/ The people were so nice and helpful and the future ideas were all great.

This looks and sounds amazing! I have so many questions, firstly, how much would it cost to live there so I can learn those answers I want for myself. I also like the idea of living in constant communication, I know thats something I say now and yeah, I could go back on it later, but right now I just feel like people are so disconnected from each other. Social media (and yes, I use it) brings us together in a way we've (as a species) never experienced before, and its that very communication that also separates us in a way we've never experienced before. I would like to experience something like this, to see and work and talk to and learn from many different people on a daily basis, to learn a trade and contribute to my soceity. One could argue, don't you do that right now? In a sense yes, but also no. This just seems so much simpler. The dream for me would be to live in a place where I can do what I want, and the only things I need to do are the things in which need to be done. For the benefit of myself and others, my soceity.

This video was awesome and very interesting. People need to practice the neighborly ways of doing things. Let’s get back to how it was in the 60s and 70s, everybody loved everybody. Everything nowadays is all computerized. Email, messages, Evites, and even cards. Everybody depends on their electronics. Pick up your phone and talk directly to somebody, send them a card, go visit them in person. One of our senses is Touch. You cannot touch through a computer. Although we all use them, we need to remember, we are all human and we all need them basic elements in our lives.

  • @puma1304
    @puma1304 3 роки тому

I will try to be positive: I value the guts and enthusiasm of wanting to "live" an experiment, and trying to think "outside the box", BUT... unfortunately even if this particular one is inspired on the premises of social sustainability as the basis of architectural design, it cannot escape the frame of the same known models we have seen so many times, and which perhaps will condemn it to a perpetual state of "utopianism": the lack of, or "imposed" organic development (at least until now). I have been thinking about sustainable architecture for a long time (dedicated my master-degree to this) and I can readily conclude that such experiments are always valuable at the conceptual level, but the REAL solution is embedded in our actual cities themselves, in a very URBAN setting, not in the middle of the desert, which is not „empty space“ but the home of coyotes, saguaros, mesquites, the sun, the wind, the sand, etc (and should be kept for them). It is INSIDE our actual cities themselves were we have to fight the big battle (optimized density), winning new spaces that go far beyond „aesthetics“ and/or market considerations alone. This is an architectural design which not only aspires to be energy-efficient and centered on Life-Cycle-Analysis (an absolute must) but one that suggests (not imposes) alternatives for social sustainability itself (form inspires function and viceversa). Such an architecture based on the ecological-systemic approach wants to have a more "fluid" relationship with aspects like economic infrastructures, energy supply and consumption, space allocation, the biological life cycle, demographics, life-projects and time management, etc. Above all this architecture aspires to offer „more options“, which means to gain more empowerment for all, in order to assist and help the user in the daily battle to attain their goals and life-project ideals (not only an „architecture of empowerment“ but also an „architecture of liberation“). This flexible, discrete and minimalistic architectonic intervention into the common space should be able to animate and enhance a „new social contract“, one which will certainly be built considering concepts like inclusion, cooperation, sufficiency, responsibility, self-initiative, commitment, and the principles of Circular Economy. Arcosanti is in this sense a step in the right direction, even considering its many flaws and inconsistencies, and should animate analysis and new inspirations.
Personally (rather „taste“ not scientific scrutiny) I do not like this arcology project. I will not go into details but I cannot fail to mention its lack of empathy for the milennial cultural experience in the region (arcology...archaeology?), nor for the „carrying capacity“ of this environment. I would certainly have looked to Anasazi, Hopi, Pueblo, and local hispanic urban design for inspiration (functional affordabilities more than just form) in the first place (although some hints of „Pueblo Bonito“ (Chaco Canyon) can be detected). In vernacular architecture and "tribal" societies we can find many very important clues, which in addition do not violate the cultural landscape of the region! One should consider the time this was started, but even so very little is mentioned about materials (adobe, rammed earth), energy (active and passive solar design, renewables, „waste“ production/management, etc) and Life-Cycle-Analysis (demographic structure/development, economic possibilities and complementarity issues)! And much much more should be commented on the social sustainability issues and experiences! Even so, this utopia is valuable, although in order to have planetary effects, utopias should be developed in real URBAN settings (cities are not only the problem but also part of the solution), anything else could also run the risk to develop into a sort of escapism...

Nice but - where have all the people gone? I think that 'build ideas' - especially when they seem to have originated 'from male brains only' - just can be 'just almost opposite of what familys and societys need'. Or they tend to be perfect appart from it.
Some examples turn out to be perfect examples of what may happen, 'if a lower middle-class-group of people very enthusiastically start beginning and doing'.
Europe for instance has seen a movement of 'planet-earth-savers' during the 1970s implementing and doing lots of research on 'natural grass roofs' - great idea, but not a global brakethrough up to now.
And it was Herr Goethe who tried to think a 'pädagogische provinz' - and I did not finish this book, because he realized while doing it that the idea was, sorry, more or less stupid. You and your parents will better off bringing you up in Houston Texas, Chicago, Ill. or New York if they want full potential for you to fully blossom. Or in the Internet.
I think, it is common sense that successful communities have hundreds of children, are vibrant - and the people love to live there and because of that stay there. Like Rio de Janeiro. Left places are covered with dust.
    Anyway.

Fortunately the USA are located on a remote and peaceful island, so they dont need to themselves there and can keep open spaces.
'The fortifications were built gradually over nine centuries, from soon after the city's foundation in the tenth century until 1867. By the end of the Renaissance, Luxembourg was already one of Europe's strongest fortresses, but it was the period of great construction in the 17th and 18th centuries that gave it its fearsome reputation. Due to its strategic location, it became caught up in Europe-wide conflicts between the major powers'
