      Why don't you try the type of ice-cream in Malaysia? I heard that there's lot kind of ice-cream there. You can go to a place called 7-Eleven to get it.

      Eileen Aldis they’re not suppose to added condensed milk in that cendol coz it’s already have brown sugar in it. I bet it’s way too sweet than the original one.

      in West Malaysia, we use coconut milk instead of condensed milk. Curry puff originally has two types of filling; either sweet potato curry or potato curry. Yellow sweet potato usually used for sweet potato fillings. Potato curry filling should taste like normal curry, not sweet, have scallions, celery, shallots and small prawns. Unfortunately now both fillings are made sweet and all additional ingredients [scallions, celery, shallots etc] were removed so the curry puff will last longer.
      If you guys visit Sarawak don't forget to try Kek Lapis Sarawak [Sarawak Layer Cake].

    You didn't stir the cendol. You were drinking the dark sugar directly, that's why it was so sweet. That's kind of a Malaysian thing.. Selling drinks without stirring the ingredients, so that the customer can have the fun of doing it themselves...

    as well .. depends on whr u buy em .. so condiments in ABCs might include cincau ( grass jelly - usually cut up into tiny squares or long strands ) sweet corn , peanuts , colourful sago and/or jelly , red beans .. then they add on the shaved ice n top it off with cendol, evaporated milk , rose syrup and also the brown palm sugar .. voila! icy happiness with a dose of sugar rush 😁

    In Penang, what you get from a bowl of cendol is green grass jelly made with green bean flour and pandan juice, red kidney bean, palm sugar, coconut milk on not-so-coarse ice, which is a little bit different from what you have in KK, I dare not say which one is better but in case you come to Penang, just give it a try. Hey Eileen and Marc, that fried green bean cake you had is called "Renasturi" (pronounced rir-nass-too-ree). You don't taste the green been because, prior to cooking, it's been soaked pretty much to a mush and packed into a patty. It's pretty popular in Sabah, more than here in the Peninsula, I believe, so you tend to get the better stuff there.

    kacang hijau is mung beans ... and the kuih kacang hijau you you ate is called kuih kasturi in the northern parts of peninsular (west) of malaysia while in the south we called it kuih rengas (or is it the other way around? hmmm.....)

    • @kryptq
      @kryptq 5 років тому

      plus kacang is pronounced like this .. (ka)car without the 'r' sound and (cang) is like chunk tht rhymes with mung like mung beans .. without the 'k' sound 😅.. does this make sense? 😂😂

    You probably thought green bean as the long green vegetable i would assume, that was why u were expecting a savory taste. But kacang hijau direct translate as green bean which is actually a green mung bean, hence the sweet taste. Malaysian use alot of mung beans as sweet desserts😊

    There are many types of durians. Some are sweet some are bitter, some creamy like ice cream and some which are firmer like what you had. The bitter durians are usually the more expensive ones like musang kings, red prawn (ang he), etc. Some durians also taste like alchohol, like the xo durian which taste exactly like xo.

    The last kuih that u ate was made of mung bean.. Not green bean as western eat as veggies/salad.
    We usually refers beans to hard/dried beans in Malay. Like..
    Kacang = bean & Hijau = Green
    Kacang Merah = Red Bean
    Kacang Tanah = Ground Bean
    Kacang Soya = Soy Bean
    But for
    Kacang Hijau = Mung Bean
    Green Bean (direct translation)... Literally there a right anyway :P

    that yellow rice is literally called "Nasi Kuning" or "Yellow Rice", that is not Nasi Lemak, it is cooked with turmeric to give it the yellowish color and taste also have hint of turmeric, its popular here in Sabah, very difficult to find it in peninsular malaysia

    I think in Singapore it is called Ice kacang.. looks more like it..and yes, it uses evaporated milk to spread the top. Cendul is another dessert that uses coconut milk n palm sugar originally and they taste way better than the condensed milk.
