CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Sara (Ellen Burstyn) starts her new diet.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Based on the novel by Hubert Selby Jr., this gritty drama concerns four people trapped by their addictions. Harry (Jared Leto), and his best friend Tyrone (Marlon Wayans) are impoverished heroin addicts living in Coney Island, NY, while Harry's girlfriend Marion (Jennifer Connelly) is a fellow addict trying to distance herself from her wealthy father. Harry dreams of scoring a pound of smack, from which he could make enough money to open a clothing boutique with Marion, but so far he and his friends can barely scrape by supporting their own habits. Meanwhile, Harry's mother Sara (Ellen Burstyn), who spends her days watching television, is told she has the opportunity to appear on her favorite game show; wanting to lose enough weight to fit into her favorite red dress, she visits a sleazy doctor who gives her a prescription for amphetamines. Soon Sara has a drug habit of her own that is spiraling out of control. Requiem for a Dream was directed by Darren Aronofsky, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Selby; it was Aronofsky's second feature, following his acclaimed independent film Pi.

Seeing how healthier and stable this old lady was before the drugs just makes it sadder
Dont worry my friend... Its just a movie
@@Veachie true
@@Veachie If you have excess fat it's healthy to lose it. The point is to do it in the right way, no starvation diet, no diet pills, no counting calories, just eat vegtables and animal products, no sugar.
She definitely wasn't happy though. The drugs are not the only reason of what happened to her, her story was tragic already.
@@zofiar4753 she was happy before the starvation diet, so yes it's the starvation diet and diet pills that made her unhappy
She should have received an Academy Award!!!!
Yes.
+Lisa Simpson Rules Perfect little julia was more popular... typical academy
Also Clint Mansell should have recieved an academy award, his music for the film was so amazing
She was nominated, but she should have won the Oscar. She deserved it.
Bizarro not think so!
til this day, the ending of this film is one of the most memorable I've ever seen. blew my fuckin mind away, the whole climax lol. Disturbing but epic..

I find this music so distressing because of later in the film
Jake TVSalesman i know what you mean.
Its like the music is already telling you that this is going to be a downfall
This character always breaks my heart
I'm pissed she got ROBBED of that Oscar.
Absolutely, she truly deserved to receive the Oscar that year,it was a travesty that she didn't.
You gotta watch interview clips of Ellen Burstyn after this movie just to know she’s OK in real life. 😆
She really convinced me she went crazy the first time I watched this movie
I felt so bad for her.
I sometimes do this when emptying out the dishwasher. I'll have all different 4 colored bowls and then go, "purple in the morning, blue in the afternoon, orange in the evening, and green at night....just like that...1, 2, 3, 4" stack'em like that and put'em away in the cupboard while imitating the trailer sound effects.
I knew nothing about this film. Now I know even less
EXACTLY I completely relate
Watch the damn movie.
Watch the movie.
Four peoples lives are ruined due to drugs.
There I saved you from 2 hours of trauma.
You will certainly regret watching this, and it is somehow "rewarding" at the same time.
Have you heard of _catharsis_ in tragedies?
The editing and the shots of Sarah on amphetamine is really accurate. The abrupt editing, the goofy dancing, the erratic music becoming faster…
This scene made me love smoked salmon, cream cheese and red onion on a bagel.
the best of them was sara she was just addicted to television and she doesn't even know that she was eating drugs untill harry told her.
She was also addicted to food,or more specifically, the dopamine release that comes with the eating of it,and even more acutely,to the sugar in the chocolates that were her guilty pleasure.
She was also addicted to the desire to be seen and accepted, which is why she was so desperate to be slim and be on television
@@omairsh8 Addicted to attention. Just like modern day women
@@thelegacyofgaming2928and just like that, you took a film with a clear cut message about the human condition and morphed it to fit your own limp-dicked anti woman narrative
@@omairsh8she wasn’t addicted to attention, im sure everyone with the right mind knows that. Shes lonely, she lives alone, confided in her own apartment for several years, ofc she wants to be seen, appreciated and most importantly loved by her only son. Her being on tv is her only chance to escape from her ordinary life. Pls give her a bit of sympathy, you’ll never know if you’ll end up just like her.
I never understood what happened to Sara's neighbors/friends during her downfall. It shows them together pretty frequently in the beginning. They begin to take more interest in her life after they find out shes going to be on tv, but still the whole time she was in her apartment by herself and having all those hallucinations, she never interacted with anyone? nobody dropped by. I'm assuming her downfall took at least a month. It seems impossible she would've not seen one friend in that time. Maybe I'm just overthinking but it still seems like a small plothole. ideas?
branman81794 that is kind of a plot hole I agree. Though two of them do show up at the end to visit her. Makes me wonder how they found out.
I was/am an addicted so just my 2 cents...
When you're addicted and you trip/withdrawal about shit you exclusively think about shit in your life.
For me it was about being alone. I would have voices telling me how much a piece shit I was. Where I was, it didn't matter where I was.
So what I can get from her is that she was alone.Absolutely alone. All she thought about was the show and going down in dress size. To point that the refrigerator became a monster. To the point the fictional show became a monster. She really had nothing. She alone and I don't blame her for feeling that way.
I don't think it's a plot hole. They probably got scared of her behavior and stepped away.
Well her entire descent took basically half a year, because if you remember, she started on the pills in the summer when the film started, and it was winter by the time everything fell apart and she was in the 'hospital'
There’s a scene right after this one where she says she’s lonely and old and Harry says you got friends and she says “that’s not the same, they dont need me”. Also I agree that when you are in addiction you isolate a lot.
Perfect portrayal of a completely clueless woman

those pills are serious dangerous
Galaxy Grandprime yes they’re called the Rainbow Diet Pills.
Cant believe they give them to little kids now
@Sunday Girl no it does not, adderall affects everyone the same way just like meth affects everyone the same. Those are excuses made so adhd people can get high off adderall without shame.
Please, people with adhd do not need stimulants, it's all excuse to sell more pills for pharma but enjoy frying your brain because at the end of the day, adderall damages the brain whether the person has adhd or not.

The editing in this film between the cuts and the split screens are well done
After she takes the pill she changes sweater to shirt to sweater over n over cuz that’s how drugs feel
Good notice !
I was just thinking about going to my doctor for diet pills..... then I got reminded of this movie! 🤣
I sort the colors and say them to myself when I’m eating Sweetarts, just like her
That is so sweet :)
I'd like to think she was eating sweet tarts as well in this film but unfortunately not.
When I first watched and saw the close up of the fridge I knew somewhere later in the film it was going to serve some purpose.
that whole phonemail she got in the beginning was nothing but a scam. I feel so bad for her.
When are scientists gonna work on the drug that just makes you thin and you can still eat 4 gallons of Haagen Dasz a day? 😂
her story was so painful to watch.
Sparksterfu The acid pill props used later in the film were also Synthroid tablets. This was not the intention; they're just props. They're meant to be amphetamines.

Well....
Watch the movie. It's amazing. Really sad, but brilliant.
The Ozempic craze
I don't think you could get ampethamines that easy, just by talking to a doctor about how you want to lose weight lol.
The book and presumably the movie takes place in the late sixties/early seventies so it is entirely plausible that some Dr.Feelgood could prescribe her methamphetamine pills.
Why am i watching clips to this movie?
Even the game show she watches is creepy...
speed really does make one so thin.........................................
Lol i loved the way she goes for the bread after taking the pills but was she supose to even do that ? Coz
I thought the whole point of those pills was to make you eat less
kathleen caruana smith less but not eat at all. I mean yeah body will use fat for its energy source but you still need nutrients
i remember when i get in to 3 days of crystal binge i don't eat for 5 days. 3 at high 2 at comedown.
@Sunday Girl that's not how the human body works idiot.
It takes a while for the pills to kick in aswell. She literally just started taking them.
Aren’t these pills just essentially adderall or some type of stimulant?
its essentially speed
They are rainbow diet pills… they had lots of ingredients, and usually higher doses of amphetamine than adderall pills have, though I’ve read that the pills were widely inconsistent. Each pill certainly had dextroamphetamine but also might have had methamphetamine, ephedrine, caffiene, and a whole host of other stuff. The movie doesn’t really elaborate and let’s the viewer assume it’s speed but the real life counterpart of the pills had all kinds of stimulants in them.
She was way more healthier before than after
Bad habits
Little did she know...

That's an oberdose
How so.
@@MikeNapoli1989it's an overdose in the sense that her dosage is too high. If a doctor prescribes stimulants for ADHD (or weight loss back in the day), if there is a strong feeling of euphoria and extreme restlessness, the dosage should be reduced because those side effects result in dependence/addiction
Question, what type of drugs those were?.
Amphetamine (“speed”) pills, apparently they were very commonly prescribed back in the day. You still get speed prescribed for things like ADHD as far as I’m aware.
@@skyfire8950 Thyanks
It is amphetamine but the rainbow diet pills she takes typically had a lot more ingredients in them like caffeine, ephedrine, other stimulants.
idk how she managed to get those pills. if they are prescribed she has to go to a psychiatrist to prescribe them
so sad
I should try those pills. Gotta do what you gotta do to lose weight, right?

Anyone know what shes dancing to? Cant find the song
‘‘Bialy & Lox Conga’, part of the original movie soundtrack by Clint Mansell
Ohhh, number 3.
Damm could aderall do that to a person in real life?
Adderall is not bad if prescribed by a good doctor, it treats severe ADD. But yes, one can overdose on anything. Addiction is a nightmare.
@@valmacclinchy But would it leave you in that state? It is quite scary
Definitely. But most people who use it as prescribed are fine. I do know two people who had temporary psychotic episodes and them, and had to stop
Hypothetically yes, though the dosage of amphetamine she was taking was likely significantly higher than an average adderall dose. Even if each pill had only 10mg amphetamine (rainbow diet pills usually had a lot more that that) that’s still 30mg amphetamine, a pretty high dose for someone with no tolerance. When Sarah developed a tolerance she started stacking her pills and taking more than what she was supposed to and that’s what led to her mental break with reality.
Adderall is not the same drug depicted here. Both contain amphetamine but the diet pills also had a bunch of other stimulants in them too.
Yes it can.
Hi all. Check out the movie, The King Of New York. It has a great cast. Laurence Fishburn, David Caruso and Christopher Walken.
During the montages she keeps getting up and taking her house coat off then puts it back on over and over and I realized it's becuase amphetamines make you hot and sweaty and it comes in waves
