Ash lying and telling Hannah the movie was gonna be uplifting is singlehandedly the most evil thing he's done to her in this channel so far

@@midknightmiddleman5887 Don't take this the wrong way, but idk how you thought that. Maybe it's because I was a bit familiar with the director's filmmaking style, but it was obvious to me from a few first scenes that it wasn't gonna be a happy movie.

The title of the movie should have been a hint. A Requiem is a funeral song. How could anyone think this movie was going to be uplifting with a title like that.

One of the most powerful scenes is when Sara is on the subway ranting and everyone is trying not to make eye contact with her. It's all nonsense to them but we know exactly what she's talking about. Knowing who she was and how she ended up there and how it was all a tragic accident, I felt so guilty watching that scene. We've all been on a train or bus with someone in that condition and just wanted to pretend that they didn't exist. That one scene literally changed how I interact with and treat people who are experiencing homelessness or mental health issues or substance abuse issues.

Ellen Burstyns performance in this movie is one of the greatest acting performances of all time.
Ellen Burstyn as the mother is my favorite female performance of all time. Perfect execution. It's criminal she lost the oscar of 'best performance' to Julia Roberts back in 2000. Absolutely criminal. The academy was and still is a popularity contest.
I remember well standing and screaming at the TV when they called Julia Roberts name.

I was glad to see Julia Roberts win...but yeah that was a tough contest. I think Burstyn has won before. But not sure.
It was an uphill climb. Studios spend a fortune promoting their awards contenders and making sure voters see their movie. Requiem was a $5 million NC-17 rated indie flick put out by a distributor that was teetering towards bankruptcy. By the time Oscar voting had ended, a large amount of voters had still not seen Requiem.
@@bobcobb3654 Would be so curious to see how much it ended up making when all is said and done. Feel like it achieved cult-movie status not that long after it was released. VHS/DVD rentals/sales must've done fairly well.
Speaking as an addict myself, the Mom's story is the most important one in terms of the film's message, I think. The other characters are going down a path we can predict the end result of (but it does not condemn them, rather it serves as a demonstration of what that path leads to). The Mom though, she's alone in retirement, she has no idea of how drugs really operate, but the minute those pills stop giving her a high, she's desperate to get back to that feeling and takes more, and bam, instant nosedive.
Addiction is not just drugs, it's food, TV, sex, etc.They say the opposite of addiction is not sobriety, it is connection. She has no one to connect to, so she turns to food, TV, and eventually the pills, the thing that was making her truly feel good for the first time in years. It's not a film that offers a solution to this life issues, but rather sheds light on what can lead to a drug craving.
The Mom's story hit a nerve in me too. My own mom used to be addicted to several pills. Working in a doctor's office= not helpful.
Luckily she was able to get away from her addiction before she lost everything...

@@siggilinde5623 Thank you - 17 months here. But these tales are necessary to see. My father, grandparents, uncle, all alcoholics. My godmother overdosed on pills, fell down the stairs, and crushed her dog, and eventually OD'd and died a few weeks later. It's absolutely a genetic disease, but the way society can eat away at people, all of us are at risk of turning to these things for some feeling of joy.
I agree with you and feel you as an addict myself who currently takes care of my elderly mother. She is so depressed currently. I can barely watch this movie. I am out of active addiction currently thankfully.
I've never been able to articulate why I always felt more for Sarah than any other character. THIS. This is why her story hit me so hard.
@@DaedBoi That's why I don't like when people go "Well so and so went down this path and deserved it." Because that's pushing away the idea that the person saying that can fall down the same pit if the circumstances with their lives wind up a certain way. The mom didn't do shit to anyone and this happened. Drugs don't operate off of "karma", like the drug is going to be like "Oh, well this person has really had it hard, I won't ravage their mind, body, and spirit"

While shooting the scene where Sara talks about being old and alone, the cinematographer accident let the camera slip off target.
They finished the take.
When the director went to ask why this happened he realized the cinematographer had been literally moved to tears by Burstyn acting, causing the cameras eyepiece to fog up.
Fortunately, they still managed to get the take and it's the one used in the film.

Good comment! and to just add to it a bit - he was fighting with himself and the editor in post while reviewing the takes for that scene. It was killing him that the shot was “soft” but the performance was just too magical to not include, even if the other takes looked better. That was the take Bernstyn said she tapped into this emotion for the first time in her life - that she was getting old” and it was the first time in her entire life she really felt that dread of being old. It was supposed to be Leto’s day for filming but she asked if she could go first because she was just tapped into that emotional space . They had to flip the whole lighting setup and their plan for filming on the fly for her coverage.
That’s what separates auteur directors who know how to work with actors and the collaboration and trust of the artists you’re working with.
You obviously see the power of that in that performance - it wasn’t just the DP either crying, the whole set was (and every audience thereafter who saw it)
Last little bit - aronovsky said he was watching a lot of Kurosawa and said he saw a shot in seven samurai (I think) where the focus was soft, and he was then finally at piece about his decision to include the “imperfect shot. Said “ if it’s good enough for Kurosawa it’s good enough for me.”
Been obsessively reading about the making of this movie because it’s a really interesting story - bits about how no one wanted to make it, Leto living on the streets with addicts as research, Wayne’s being a dramatic actor since he was a kid but no one knew (also Darren was trying to convince Dave Chapelle to do it initially), Connelly wasn’t really being considered but she had an audition where she just blew everyone’s minds and went so deep she threw a chair across a room, how the film composer almost quit because he was struggling with the “hip hop/rap” elements the creative called for, but then this score just came out of thin air and when they put it in the edit, it felt like an act of god of how much it elevated the entire movie the second they saw the footage with it.

I'm really glad you shared this info. You might be aware this was a novel before it was a film (it's even more brutal IMO). Ellen Burstyn did an interview with the author (it was featured on a DVD extra) and it was so interesting to watch.
Some of what you shared I knew, but you also shared a few facts I didn't know. Clearly, I'm all in when it comes to movie facts and trivia, I can't get enough ☺️!!!
The performances are amazing, but Marlon Wayans surprised the hell outta me, he holds his own in every scene!

Easily one of the most powerful films of all time. Seeing it on the big screen back in 2000 was one of the most definitive moviegoing experiences of my life. I was a film student at the time and remember thinking, "I'll never make anything this good".
You were right.
When some people hear the word 'actress' they think of Meryl Streep. When I hear 'actress' I think Ellen Burstyn. This woman is the definitive for me. Born to act.
Both of them are amazing, relying on pure talent. Their looks didn't help them into roles like some others, they just had to be masters of their craft
She is criminally underrated. She has always been one of my favorites. Her ex husband stalked her for years and then broke into her house and raped her. When she told the police they said a husband having sex with his wife wasn’t a crime. He later killed himself.
To be in the two scariest movies of all time - it’s jaw dropping

When you said, "I keep waiting for it to take an upturn," I remembered that the director said the same thing about reading the book. He said that what illuminated the story and made him want to make the movie was when he understood that the actual hero of the story was Addiction.
I'm a 2 year clean ex heroin of 15 years. Only by the grace of God am I still here. I've watched this movie twice and along with 'Trainspotting' the movie is terrifying to me. I love Ash and Hannah and will watch their reaction to it just because it's them and want to see their reaction to the stuff us addicts have done.
To all you guys in recovery keep up the good fight and to all you in the grips of addiction know that there are people out there who still love you and if you say no then love yourself. God loves you more than anything.
P.s The two movies that should be shown to teenagers in school are this and 'Kids'.
Ash, did you notice the mom is the same actress who plays the little girl's mom in The Exorcist? Ellen Burstyn. Phenomenal actress.

Yeah. I saw this in 2002, I was 16. The most incredible movie that I never want to see again. Well, I sorta saw it again today and seeing Hannah go through it was tough. What a masterpiece.
I watched it one time, in 2006. I finished around 1 a.m., and literally watched 2 hours of comedy TV because I was worried that if I went to sleep that depressed I would simply die of despair. I don’t think I’ve ever been more miserable. Such a good film though.

You know, it's so strange how I keep hearing people so once is enough with this movie. I've watched this movie multiple times. I deal a lot with depression and anxiety, so I find it gives me a strange conforming feeling. I just can't explain it.
This is one of the most profoundly sad movies I’ve ever, ever watched. Good on you all for taking this on. It’s such a deep tragedy, portrayed beautifully.
They need to watch the ending of "The Mist" to cheer themselves up after this one.
Also really tragic but must watch movies are The Road and Enter the Void. Nothing to watch more than once aswell

Honestly the most impactful movie I’ve ever seen. Also the most disturbing. I was 18 when I saw it. Over 2 decades and I still can’t rewatch it in full. And it has THE most haunting score.

I watched this as a 16 year old, at my friend's house, not long after it came out. After it was over, I walked to the kitchen, and we just laid on the floor. Ellen Burstyns' performance is phenomenal. The friends hugging on the park bench near the end always makes me tear up.
This movie shook me to my core. Especially the downfall of the mother. The scenes of her delirium and psychosis were way, way too real. Way too relatable. They emulated those experiences way too accurately. I find myself having flashbacks to my personal experiences while watching those scenes. Especially when she’s walking around the apartment, and the fluorescent lights are glowing above her eerily. everything around you becomes hell in those moments. and those scenes emulate is perfectly.
I’ve lived this .. survived came back

I feel Hannah when she said "I'm not mad at you." This movie has a way of just making your skin crawl. You get angry watching it, but you can't stop because you hope it gets better.
It's a great movie that really affects your entire mood.
That reminds me of how I was sooo angry watching [the Korean version of] "Miracle in Cell No. 7". I wanted to cry so much at that movie but actually couldn't because I was too angry! Very uncomfortable feeling for sure.
Everyone does a great job in the movie, but Burstyn (I think 67 at the time) gave a stunning performance. She was nominated for a best actress oscar (her 6th Oscar nomination, previously winning for Alice Doesn't Live here anymore). It was pretty stiff competition (losing to Julia Roberts, in Erin Brockovich), but i feel she should have won. Great reaction guys.
She absolutely should've won. Julia Roberts got it as a career achievement Oscar.
I was 20 when I watched this and already a movie buff and Ellen burstyn’s monologue caved my heart in and burned it to my brain forever.
The universal feeling and sentiment of loneliness and despair conveyed by the monologue and her performance elevates it to a Shakespearean level.
Don't do drugs, but also watch your prescriptions. I got cravings after only a few doses of opioid painkillers following a surgery. I never got addicted, but I'm sure I would have if I hadn't stopped.
Thank God Doctors are aware of this. After surgery they give you just enough along with physical therapy and move you onto otc. Tylenol.
Hannah: She has to drag the TV home everytime. This is breaking my heart already.

This movie is incredibly difficult to watch but it's absolutely incredible. Darren Aronofsky did an amazing job as just bringing a VISCERAL look to addiction. And it's not just drug addiction, it's literally just addiction to whatever makes you happy due to a lack of emotional connection. I've seen this movie twice, once on my own, once again with a friend showing her the movie, and that's it despite the fact I own it on dvd. It's so tough to soldier through, but it's an important story to tell. Mad props to Hannah and you for pushing through this reaction.
Seeing the first 2 minutes, I just want to hug Hannah , she has no idea what’s in store. The soundtrack is seared in my memory. This movie made me feel hopeless about life as a teen.
I've seen this movie enough times to have become numb to it and not cry, but watching Hannah's reaction and her crying has me bawling all over again. That woman is a gem, Ash, never let her go.
This movie just ripped the glorified curtain away from prostitution, drugs and all kinds of addiction really, entirely.
As a fifteen year old, movies like this made me super curious about drugs. Not gonna lie. Not for the outcomes obviously...but just the euphoria of the early scenes.

@@robvanharen81 For sure. It gets dark. But there's so many movies and shows and Behind the Music episodes...those portrayals are like a double edge sword. It looks risky but you also wonder why these rich or attractive people want them so badly, and fight so hard to get them. I did end up experimenting w c*ke and E and Ambien for about four years. Quit all of them thank God. Even alcohol. Definitely wouldn't recommend them to others...but can't say I regret it entirely either.

One of the most brutal films of recent times imo. Aronofsky's direction, the performances, the haunting soundtrack, and the raw story, make this a masterpiece. Ellen Burstyn's (the mum) performance is out of this world. Theres a reason she's won the "triple crown of acting" (Oscar, Emmy and Tony awards), and she showed it in this movie.
How Ellen Burstyn lost to Julia Roberts for best actress in 2000, is beyond me

we were 15 at a sleepover and my friend's older cousin happened to be round, we asked him what to watch and he laughed and suggested this. absolutely scarring but one of the best i've ever seen
First time I saw this, I remember the movie ending and everyone in the theater just sat in stunned silence. The last 10 minutes with that bizarre almost circus music was a full on cinematic assault. It’s a brilliant movie, and I’ve watched it a few times since, but mainly it’s to study the filmmaking aspects (specifically the editing). I can’t say I’ve ever enjoyed this movie.
I know what you mean about being intrigued by a movie without "enjoying" it-- that was me with [the Korean version of] "Miracle in Cell No. 7". I wanted to cry so much at that movie but actually couldn't because I was too angry! Very uncomfortable feeling for sure. (I've discovered that If I have any sort of anxiety or anger in me at all, I can't cry even if I want to.). Crying actually makes me feel better, but with all the anger keeping it from coming out during that movie, it was more like emotional constipation.
This is a movie I've only ever watched once and once was enough because it has stuck with me ever since I watched it years ago. It's a hauntingly depressing masterpiece that left me feeling an intense sense of emptiness and despair for weeks afterwards.
Also, I love how it makes no distinction between a hard-core heroine addict and a suburban housewife on diet pills. Addiction in addiction in all forms.
It's how a lot of people get addicted to street drugs in the first place, when the prescriptions run out.

I used to go to this movie club where they would show different movies, normally after the movie everyone was chatting and saying goodbye until next week. But after this movie everyone, and i mean everyone left the theatre in silence staring at the floor.😢
This movie & ‘Threads’ (1984) are the two most depressing movies I’ve ever seen. But both of them are absolutely phenomenal.
As someone who struggled with addiction for well over a decade, this movie captures addiction like no other. It is not exaggerating..
This is one of those movies where everyone should watch at least once, and if that one time is the only viewing that’s perfectly okay lol. The anxiety I felt watching this is unmatched, I’m hesitant to even watch you watch 😂

I accidentally watched this movie and my Cinephile Grandfathers house at the age of 12. I don’t remember much for some reason before the age of 10, but at random times during any given day, scenes from this movie come into my head. It really is the definition of “this movie stays with you”.
Ellen Burstyn absolutely crushes this role. All of the are great, but my god she is outstanding.

Ash, i'm surprised you didn't react to the ending with them being in "fetal position," they all turn to the side and do that as comfort, very symbolic. Like babies or sick children ;( that part gets me the most
Yo! I just realized that. Especially with Marlon Wayne's character always reminiscing about his mom. Now it's even more depressing.
I saw this movie in 2003, and it was such a hard watch. I empathize with the two of you watching this reaction. Each actor was so phenomenal. I have to give Marlon Wayans his props as well.
The author of the book once said, in a twisted way, Requiem For A Dream was uplifting, in that the hero of the story was addiction itself and its triumph over the human spirit.

Also, the ending sequence is one of the most stressing moments in movie history for me. I'm someone who's used to depravity and gore but the ending sequence from this movie (which has no gore) managed to disturb me way more.
Its a fantastic movie, so well made and poignant BUT it is a hard watch and leaves you feeling so hollow and numb afterwards.
This is one of the best films about drugs.. The real side.. Very heavy movie, the actors do the roles of their lives.. like a documentary.. with heavenly music.. If you've seen it once, you'll never forget it..

Ellen Burstyn was the mom in The Exorcist. She is one of our best actresses! Another great performance of hers is in Alice Doesn’t Like Here Anymore. Also Resurrection. Love her a lot.
This is one of those movies that is so hard to watch that you never want to watch it again, but at the same time you NEED and MUST watch it at least once.
One of the saddest scenes in this movie is actually seeing Marion smiling at the end - when she's laying on the sofa and holding her bag of H that she had to prostitute herself for.
This is actually the second time I see this movie. I was 20 the first time I saw it, 20 years ago. that one time was enough for me.
Poor Hanna. I really feel for her.
I've not watched this movie since its release (for obvious reasons) but i just bawled my eyes out watching it again with you two. Sometimes great movies can be 'one and done' when they're so impactful.
This story is so real and timeless. The director kept the 70's dialog of the book, and it works so well. This is my number 2 favorite movies.

That score alongside the closing montage.... damn. Having experienced addiction firsthand it's even more powerful. Aronofsky at his best.
I remember them using Clint's score in the promos for LOTR Two Towers. Still not sure why.

I genuinely love everything about this film. It's increasingly horrible but, as a piece of art (and a lesson), it's fantastic
Darren Aronofsky's camera work and editing has always been. Another film of his that i love dearly is Pi.

This is the only movie to ever give me a real life anxiety attack- I had to hit my inhaler by the end of it- it’s so brutal - and accurate
I watched this for the first time as a teenager, and every time I’ve watched it again I have to wait longer and longer between viewings. Each time it hits me emotionally and I break drown crying at the end. This film is an incredible tragedy and a masterpiece.
The mother ironically was the character I identified with the most. Her performance was incredible. Btw, I only decided to watch this again early because of you two. I had to see it hit you, and I was not disappointed.

I remember watching this for the first time back in 2000 when I was only 15. Definitely a terrifying watch for back then and that young. I remember my uncle rented it from Blockbuster. Over the years it ended up becoming one of my top 10 favorite films as well as top 10 favorite musical scores.
One of the best movie.. and I only watch this movie once in my whole entire life, because.. this movie hits me deep, and I cant watch it again, its just too sad.. but since its a reaction of you two, two of my most favorite people on youtube, I would watch 💯

Saw this shortly after it came out back in the day. When it came out on DVD, I showed two of my female relatives and they literally cried nearly uncontrollably throughout the entire thing.
I watched this on my own (for the first time) when I saw Ash's patreon announcement, so I could have the background when I caught their premier on UA-cam. I actually didn't cry BUT I know why not... it's because I was too freaked out, anxious and disturbed to cry. I've discovered that If I have any sort of anxiety in me at all, I can't cry even if I want to. Same with anger-- my response to this movie reminded me of how I was sooo angry watching [the Korean version of] "Miracle in Cell No. 7". I wanted to cry so much at that movie but actually couldn't because I was too angry! Very uncomfortable feeling for sure.
Every single performance in this film is amazing.
This is one of the greatest films ever made imho. It's probably the film that hit me the hardest after watching it. I was given the film by my brother, didn't know what it was about. They had shown this in his class in school actually and he told me I had to see it. As a director myself, I feel like this film is the ultimate proof of how we can be affected by the art of cinema. I remember after seeing it and the screen went black when it was over I probably sat for 30 minutes just staring into a black screen. First being affected by the gut-punch that this film delivers and then thinking about how I would never be able to make a film this powerful. It affected me in several ways. I've been wating for one of the reaction channels I follow to screen this. Good work guys!
This movie really stays with you. The mother's pill addiction, in particular, has haunted me ever since.
More than half my life has been surrounded by this kind of environment. It's the worst when it's any family that get involved in any way. Some people wonder how you can do these things after seeing things like this. I don't know how I was involved in most of the things I was involved in. I actually would do dope while watching this movie, which seems insane... "Trainspotting" and "Candy" are probably the other top "anti-drug"/addiction" movies out there that I can think of. A lot of the time you're lucky to see a happy ending in these situations. It's also more than just being about "drugs" too.
As an addiction in family and mental illness and myself an addict you hit the nail on the head

Congrats for getting through this. I can't tell you how depressed I was watching this movie more than 10 years ago and just sat with it for days. It really really makes you think and is just such a difficult watch.

The abscessed arm, the bunny rabbits, the old lady watching game shows, jennifer connelly backing that thang up... The whole movie is one giant panic attack. Sensory overload. 😢

Oh my god... I feel so bad for egging you on to watch this now. Hannah's reaction is probably the most guttural response to a movie I've ever seen, and Ash wasn't far off it either. Thank you for watching it - all four of the leads perform incredibly in this, with Ellen Burstyn's obviously being a standout above and beyond still. Without a doubt career best performances for Jared Leto, Jennifer Connolly and Marlon Wayans too. I just imagine how awful this must have been to film for months. Hopefully there were some jokes on set to lighten the mood...!!!
For sure... I think this is the most emotional I've seen Hannah in particular. I could relate to her reaction toward the end where I could see "it just wasn't stopping" for her!
What's wild is the book is even SADDER !! such a terrible story but an important one to tell. I love how all the paths of addiction are different but they all lead to the same horrific dark places.

You guys had about the same reaction I had when I first saw it when it first came out. This is the only other time I've "seen it". I have watched some hard movies, notwithstanding horror, Eraserhead, Breaking the Waves, A Zed & Two Noughts, Black Swan, Dancer In The Dark, The Mist, etc. . . Watching you go through what I went through was as close to ever watching this movie again as I will ever get. Just remember there aren't that many more movies this hard. Trainspotting is a great one, dark, but rewatchably great. Thanks for the entertainment, for sure. This film is definitely an experience worth having at least once.
This music is something out of a dream- the soundtrack is soul-shatteringly beautiful and makes everything so much more intense.
While this movie does have all the memes, i really love Aronofsky's The Fountain, another absolute banger of a soundtrack by Clint Mansell with story and visuals that hit just right for me. shattered me : D
The Fountain really is a beautiful movie. There are some great explanations on UA-cam that it helps to hear to gain more insight after working through it yourself.

This is the first time I’m seeing this channel ever and I must say Hannah you’re very very smart lmao. You picked up on stuff in this movie I had to research.
Props to you guys for sitting through this. darren aronofsky’s movies are always a wild ride. Idk if you guys have watched other movies by him- the black swan, mother perhaps. It’s always a slow burn at the start, then everything is thrown at you all at once towards the end and it overwhelms you to the point where you don’t even know what to do with your emotions.
Requiem for a dream is by far his best though. I’ve never been so moved watching a movie ever in my life. I was in shock, sobbing, gagging, having an existential crisis all at once, but that’s what I look for in a movie. A movie that can illicit the deepest emotions in me, even if it’s hard to go through.
Name another movie that has ever specifically made you feel what this film made you feel- I bet you can’t.
I definitely can't name a movie "like" this one, but I can think of other movies that have provoked intense and interesting reactions from me. And yes that's also what I look for in a movie too. Some I "enjoy" more (or less!) than others but here are two examples: The [Korean version of] "Miracle in Cell No. 7". I wanted to cry so much at that movie BUT actually couldn't because I was too angry! Very uncomfortable feeling for sure. Crying actually makes me feel better, but with all the anger keeping it from coming out during that movie, it was more like emotional constipation. 2nd example: Nimona - that one (when I count my watches of the actual movie, plus watching reactions, plus reading or writing comments)-- THAT was the ONLY "repeater tearjerker" for me in my life, at 12 total times at that! I was very surprised at my reaction to that movie.
