Finally, a cool season video. I enjoy all your material, but as a southwest Ohio homeowner I always looks forward to these videos. Kinda get tired of the warm season stuff that only kind of applies to my yard. God bless
If you're going to buy a Scotts Spreader, spend the money and get the Elite, as shown here. The reason is that the Edgeguard Delux and Mini have a design flaw that throws seed into the right wheel, resulting in stripes of seed/product on the lawn. Scotts knows about this (you can see photos and complaints on Amazon one-star reviews going back at least to 2020), but sells them anyway. Even better, buy a different brand. Be sure the rotary mechanism is above the top rim of the wheel.
Brother, my Tall Fescue had been on life support all summer here in VA. Late May to early August was pushing close to 100°every day. My lawn is primarily crab grass now. I'm plugging Zoysia in the spring.
I'm in Maryland, so I feel your pain. Follow this video and use the Johnathan Green DELMARVA seed, trust me you'll be good. Like they said, water is the key element. I'm investing in an irrigation system in the spring. Hope that helps you
Worst part of NW IN is you get a 7 to 10 days of fall weather and then you get the 2nd or 3rd wind of summer where you get a week of 80 to 90 degrees days. So difficult to time this lol
10 days is long enough for perennial ryegrass to germinate. Just water 3 times a day for 10 mins (9am, 1pm, 5pm) or something close to this depending on sunlight and temps. Just make sure the soil is always moist. Use a topper like peat moss so that you always know if the soil is wet. Does the peat moss look dry? Water for 10mins. Don't over complicate it. Once it germinates and it gets to be 80/90 degrees for a few days just keep an eye on the lawn and maybe water a little more. Anyways... Good luck with your fall overseeding!
hey man!, love your channel. I got a little over 5 acres and I cut the grass a lot. It looks good at a distance but its pretty much mostly weeds. I know it's gonna take some time, so I just got a soil test kit to start. My wife pulls a lot of crabgrass and there are bare spots everywhere. I have seeded on these and it's been raining for a week. I thought I would check the soil after the rain takes a break. Our house is what you see when you turn down the road. Hopefully I can get some sort of plan to make my house represent.
the fall/winter dormancy depression is beginning to set in for me here in North Texas with only a little more time before things wrap up for the year. I waited so long for the brink of soil temperatures hitting 55 degrees and 12 hours of daylight. And now it's already over. Why does the growing season have to go by so fast. Why can't there just be vigorous green grass all year round. I haven't had enough time to complete all the projects I wanted to do this season. Curse you winter!!!
I have wildflowers in my yard called tickseed sunflowers, They are a perfect cue to seed. Anytime during or just past their peak bloom is primetime for seeding.
This is the video I was looking for. We just moved into a house here in MN. The lawn is needing TLC and we came from a townhouse so I've never done lawn care. What do you do about weeds? Do those have to go before this process? Do I ignore them until the spring? EDIT: I did not get all the way thru and see the part about weeds. Thank you.
Tried this method and products suggested. Our yard is green but noticing some yellow patches now that it’s getting cooler. Could that be caused by too much product. I did 2nd layer of 12-12-12 last week
Sounds great...... Question....NW Indiana area.... What about existing CRAB GRASS that had a good hold on some parts of the lawn. Should I bite the bullet and remove it/thin it out by pulling it out.....yuck. Or just fo as you prescribed in this video. Thanks for all the good videos.
the mesotrione that I used as pre-emergent in this video will also kill crabgrass. But if it's very very thick in some spots right now, to the point where seed won't get through, then spot spray it with glyphosate now and kill it. you can reseed right away after a gly app
@@Thelawncarenut Sounds great. I assume Roundup Weed & Grass Killer can be used, 2% glyphosate, 2 % pelargonic acid and 96% other stuff....LOL Rake the heavy stuff up and then come back with your mesotrione?
Hi Allyne- great videos btw! I just bought your lawn plan for fescue in the Sacramento area and I have a ton of weeds including nuts edge. I have a guy coming to aerate my lawn next Tuesday, so my question is can I mow low and seed and fertilize after the aeration next Tuesday? What steps should I follow? My grass looks very similar to the one in this video
Have dead grass in the front yard which oxalis and crabgrass grew into those thin areas. Will that herbicide kill those weeds. I plan to dethatch front yard and reseed according to your plan. Both front and back yards are full sun all day but with the city's large tree in the front and the direct sun, the front yard took a real beating. I could not keep up with the watering and mother nature didn't help a bit. Will I need to use another pre-emergent on front lawn later in the fall to get in front of winter and spring weeds. I experimented in the backyard and used a different seed last fall, JG Heat and Drought seed. The backyard came through it all pretty well. I plan to do a light dethatch or should I use the liquid Dethatcher (have both)? I than plan to use the other items in video: Air8. fertilizer, Hydretain, etc. I also want to put down pre-emergent for the fall. so should I just add in the Mesotrione or another one of the other pre-emergents? Since I am not reseeding the back when should I do this?

Hello Allyne, thx for the video. I have been following you now for a few years now. I am reseeding my backyard next week. I am in northern Ohio. 7 days ago I spread compost on my lawn in the Asheville NC area and overseeded it with Turf type tall fescue and Kentucky Bluegrass seeds. I’ve been watering it frequently and lightly to keep the seeds moist. Now I’m noticing 3 to 5 inch white circles on the compost. I think it is actinomycetes from the compost. Is this something I should be concerned about hurting my lawn? Should I treat it with fungicide(s)? If so which fungicides? I've just changed my watering to less run time and also the last run time of the day has been moved to earlier in the day so it won't be so wet all night. Thank you in advance for your advice.
Hey Lisa - I'm not really sure on this one, sorry. I've never used compost in conjunction with seeding so I dont know the effects it has. I would not sling more chemicals though - I would just stick to the plan, keep watering and let the seed come up.
Allyn, any tips on a couple seasons-old GCI turf TTTF for seeding in the fall? Everything I’ve seen is assume 50% decrease in efficacy after sitting in proper dry storage a year. Safe to throw down at double the typical rate you’d normally throw down for a fresh bag? Thanks!
just thrower down at the recommended rate and hope for the best, that's what I would do. If you have enough to go heavier, might as well so you don't have to store it any longer.
Hello, I require your assistance with an urgent matter. Yesterday, I inadvertently made a mistake by mixing Weedol with fertilizer instead of seaweed. Hey buddy.. I asked this question a few days ago from a video you made 3 years ago about the Dial N Spray.. I really need to do something soon here but is this assumption correct about the Dial N Spray please? Thank You.. I know this video is old buddy, but just a little confused. I just bought some Bifenthrin for cinch bugs and the label says 1 ounce per gallon per 1000 feet. I’m still not sure how to set my sprayer ha ha can you please help? I’m thinking, put 2 ounces of insecticide in the container and then fill it up, and then I have two minutes to spray over 2000 ft.² correct ?
I was going to start my lawn in wisconsin last week but i seen this week weather and knew I had to wait. 3 days with heat index into the 90s. today and tomorrow 100 or more. Was it a good idea to wait a week or should I have just done it?
@@Thelawncarenut I watched your video on bluegrass and rye timing. I know in the past we have had snow in October already so I am nervous. I went with the barenberg bluegrass with faster germination which i will spread in with my obsidian perennial rye. I might do a test patch as well of the kbg only to see how fast it really goes.
Do NOT do this for warm season grass such as Bermuda or Zoysia. Just wanted to make that clear. Too many people try to seed warm season and it never matches. Good video LCN.
Hey bro, even when I do weed control post and pre-I still get weeds here and there can I safely throw down pre-emergent more than just in the early spring and the late fall does it matter if my soil temp right now is 85° is that bad if I throw down pre-emergent right now and then again in the fallI’m just curious because it says only helps for 3 to 4 weeks so after that, I still get weeds popping out
pre-emergents like prodiamine only stop some weeds, not all. There is one called Penant Magnum that stops quite a few more that we face in FL but it's very expensive.
Mesotrione is a herbicide that is labeled for use as pre-emergent in conjunction with seeding - here is more info: thelawncarenut.com/products/mesotrione-meso-4sc-select-brand-alternative-tenacity
I don't typically recommend seeding warm season turf - here is a video I made to explain why: ua-cam.com/video/rXSXHyZ05LY/v-deo.htmlsi=np3IyWY_DpdDpah5
Are you saying that dethatching or aerating is not necessary for seed to soil contact? What about if there is a fair amount of dead grass/debris currently there. Shouldn't that be removed prior to this? Seems like dead grass blades and debris clouds the green color that we're looking for. Thanks in advance....
I like mechanical aeration and if you have the means and ability, I highly recommend it, but the reality is that 99% of folks won't rent the machine so I wanted to show you can do it without the mech aeration and still get great results.
I can't believe they sent you a fine for 400 bucks for spraying that. Up around here they spray crops all the time when it is windy, and most farmers don't care if it drifts.
yes this one here will be a good start (watch the entire thing to see a SA lawn I rehabilitated) ua-cam.com/video/rXSXHyZ05LY/v-deo.htmlsi=7XdSuO7ZEFbTASsg
it's because I really want to push the lawn to thicken up during this short window we have in the fall. I am wanting to really pump it up and back-to-back apps does that. The Starter Fert delivers .36lbs/N/1000 with each app so it's not going to over-do it.
you can if you want to, and I recommend it for sure! But the reality is 99% of folks are not going to rent the machine so in this one we wanted to show that you can still get great results without it.
@@mckattk837 its a judgment call - trust your gut - if they seem thick enough to block seed from getting down - then kill them off and scalp them before seeding. read label on product and it will tell you how long to wait after applying to seed
Allyn, thanks for another great video! I am in a quandary. I am in Northeast PA and I have a 50x30 sloped area of my back yard that overlooks our new sun room and 20x18 paver patio. It backs up to a few pine trees bordering our neighbors house. I hate looking outside and seeing a huge bare area eroded away. Did soil test through Penn State and have been applying recommended product to correct and watering in lightly to avoid runoff two or three tines a day. Also adding sea kelp to get something organic in there. My quandary is should I plant grass seed or put in ground cover like Creeping Juniper. I worry rain will eventually cause moreverosion and affect grass. I plan in adding more soil before whatever I do. What would you do?

Was it a good idea to wait a week or should I have just done it?
it was a good idea to wait - you are just now coming into the good window to seed - anytime in the next couple weeks is fine
When will the transition zone seed come back in stock?
we only have 45s left right now (sold out quick after I dropped this video) so we wont have more until spring, sorry about that
When overseeding, do you worrying about birds?
What was the seed covering you recommend? Also, can I use the granular Prodiamine?
no on the prodiamine. The seed covering is greenview seeding success: amzn.to/472TFuT
Do NOT do this for warm season grass such as Bermuda or Zoysia. Just wanted to make that clear. Too many people try to seed warm season and it never matches. Good video LCN.
When spraying Air-8, Hydretain, and Mesotrione, do I need to add a surfactant because of Meso or no? Thanks!
Excellent question! Since we are using it as a pre-emergent we want to get it watered in, so no need for surfactant.
Any idea when the Sunniland WDG Prodiamine will be back in stock?
sadly we will not be getting it anymore. Sunniland was bought out by a roofing company and no longer has the same contacts they used to
Did you say you applied the weed killer right after seeding? Wouldn’t that stop the new seed from sprouting?
Mesotrione is a herbicide that is labeled for use as pre-emergent in conjunction with seeding - here is more info: thelawncarenut.com/products/mesotrione-meso-4sc-select-brand-alternative-tenacity
@@Thelawncarenut THANKS!
most of us have pets and when you are working on the back yard...how long should we wait after fertiilizing to let the pets back on the grass?
When is the best time to seed for warm season ?
I don't typically recommend seeding warm season turf - here is a video I made to explain why: ua-cam.com/video/rXSXHyZ05LY/v-deo.htmlsi=np3IyWY_DpdDpah5
Are you saying that dethatching or aerating is not necessary for seed to soil contact? What about if there is a fair amount of dead grass/debris currently there. Shouldn't that be removed prior to this? Seems like dead grass blades and debris clouds the green color that we're looking for. Thanks in advance....
yes if there is a matted layer of debris then you will need to aerate it or de-thatch. In this lawn we did not have that issue.
How did that guy from ND fine you? Did he fine you just based on the video or did he catch you or did someone turn you in?
I'll tell the story on the podcast, it's quite funny actually
No core aeration or slit seeder?
I like mechanical aeration and if you have the means and ability, I highly recommend it, but the reality is that 99% of folks won't rent the machine so I wanted to show you can do it without the mech aeration and still get great results.
Don’t is OK to use Air8 when seeding? The description on your site mentions it is fine to use when not seeding.
you can use it when seeding or when not seeding, either is ok.
If I’m overseeing this fall do I need to are aerate first
no you do not have to unless you want to
Do you have the same PDF for warm season grass here in South Florida
watch this video to get a good start for sure ua-cam.com/video/rXSXHyZ05LY/v-deo.htmlsi=7XdSuO7ZEFbTASsg
I can't believe they sent you a fine for 400 bucks for spraying that. Up around here they spray crops all the time when it is windy, and most farmers don't care if it drifts.
pretty crazy right? The thing is, there is no wind restriction on the herbicide. They didn't even botherr to look
Please tell us you fought it and didn't pay such ridiculousness.
Man I live in ND…10 mph is a calm day up here. What a frickin joke. Never heard of this happening
There's always one Karen in the neighborhood..
I'm in ND. While I try to avoid windy days. It's impossible. I hope you didn't pay that. Id mail it back to them with "HAHA" scribbled across it.
How long after throwing fert can you overseed?
anytime
Putting down a seed inhibitor while seeding?
nothing in here would inhibit the seed so we are all good.
So how do you prevent the birds from eating all the seed???
they don't eat much if any. Seems like they do, but they don't.
Is there a st Augustine version of this video?
yes this one here will be a good start (watch the entire thing to see a SA lawn I rehabilitated) ua-cam.com/video/rXSXHyZ05LY/v-deo.htmlsi=7XdSuO7ZEFbTASsg
What seed do you recommend to over seed in emerald zoysia in NWFL?
I don't really recommend seeding it unless you are talking about a dormant winter seeding - in that case get the cheapest annual ryegrass you can find
Why do you do a second app of starter fert 15 days later?
it's because I really want to push the lawn to thicken up during this short window we have in the fall. I am wanting to really pump it up and back-to-back apps does that. The Starter Fert delivers .36lbs/N/1000 with each app so it's not going to over-do it.
High rubber boots at amazon about thirty dollars
Best zoysia seed for overseeding?
typically I don't recommend overseeding warm season turf - here is why ua-cam.com/video/rXSXHyZ05LY/v-deo.html
No plug aeration?
you can if you want to, and I recommend it for sure! But the reality is 99% of folks are not going to rent the machine so in this one we wanted to show that you can still get great results without it.
Let's goo!
No dethatchi
ng?
we did not need it in this case. If you have a thick layer of dead matter in there, then for sure you should aerate or dethatch or both
What about if you have lots of weeds as well
the winter will kill them so you can concentrate on growing grass. If you use the Mesotrione pre-emergent that will kill many of the weeds too
@Thelawncarenut even if they are thick? Will seed get in? U rock boss. Thanks for the reply
@@mckattk837 its a judgment call - trust your gut - if they seem thick enough to block seed from getting down - then kill them off and scalp them before seeding. read label on product and it will tell you how long to wait after applying to seed
The guide doesn't mention seeding of bentgrass.
that's not something I have ever dealt with.
Can you ship a bottle of tenacity to me iN CANADA 😢😢😢
Did i wait too long? It’s almost October.
I'm going to start according to lcn Halloween schedule.
What would you do?
if the slope is steep, I'd try stair stepping it with retaining walls. I don't like any type of "hill" in a yard because it makes it un-usable.
@@Thelawncarenut thanks, I would estimate it to be between a 25 to 30 percent slope grade, then it flattens out near the top.
Hey allyn can you do now a warm season video :)
sure can, next week! 😂
No way you fix my laundry in three weeks lol
yeah that would be a different UA-cam channel 😂
That's crazy a government official find you 😢 spraying in the wind.
Spray like you pee, with the wind.
good advice!
I’ve been spreading my seed for 12 and a half years. I don’t have a lawn though.
sounds fun but potentially expensive. 😃
Seed... St Aug don't need no seed.😂
SA doesn't grow from seed. All SA seed from the plant is sterile. Only grows from sod or plugs.
You shouldn't apply a pre emergent when you seed as PE prevents cell division in new grow....which includes new grass seed!!
Mesotrione is an exception for new grass seeding.
this herbicide is labeled to be used with seed - more info here: thelawncarenut.com/products/mesotrione-meso-4sc-select-brand-alternative-tenacity
