Everyone: I bought Ryan’s elite turf type tall fescue. Dethached, overseeded and watered steadily got germination in six days! Amazing color worth every penny. Thanks Ryan!
Fellow lover of perennial rye here. Recently purchased your Elite Perennial Rye and seeded a rather steep bank on the corner of my property. To underscore the incredible advantage of the speed of germination this area was seeded less than one week prior to the arrival of Hurricane Helene to my property in Augusta, GA. It had just started coming up when ten inches of rain coupled with 100 MPH winds struck in the early morning hours of Sep 27th. I just knew I would totally have to reseed with that bearing down. I mean no chance, no way....... wow, was I wrong !! I will only have to reseed a few small areas. Miracle !!!
Just completed an over seeding project myself and filled the exact same steps worked great a few bare spots but overall great results. Thanks Ryan for the great information and a great video
6:08 Turn the bag so the double seam is towards you, then untie the string starting on the left hand side. At least that’s how the sewing gun worked when I used to seal those bags up. Good luck! And thanks for all the information you provide in your videos!
For the seed bag, you don't have to cut the end. Just remove the end of the string from the loop and pull. If it knots up, wrong end. The correct end will just open right up.
I thought my little brown spots scattered in my KYB lawn were 'hot spots' or some disease, even though I watered heavily and the surrounding lawn is pretty lush. They had been in the lawn for many weeks with our dry spell. I put down Both kinds of granular grub control (season and 24 hour), earlier in the season. I kind of thought it was just the KYB being dramatic in the heat of summer. Last week I started noticing what looked like someone had aerated large amounts of the lawn. But no, it is a skunk and he is concentrating on pulling out quarter sized plugs - mostly on those dead spots, and having all he can eat at the grub buffet ! It seems like they can sense these things and feel like I should let him clear them out as none of the big box grub killers seemed to do the job as consistently as it should. I had never seen a episode on the lawn channels about skunks vs. grubs. I only thought moles did this stuff, from underneath. lol
Ryan, I’ve been using the Equalizer on my lawn and it is the best product by far! It dissolves quick and the results are amazing! I’ll have to order a 25lbs bag next year for my Bermuda.
I did the same a few weeks ago to my fescue front yard and blue grass back yard. I scarified/dethatched both yards and used the rake to get everything up. The bag on the machine doesn't hold much so it's easier to just rake up.
Hey Ryan, Newbie to your channel. Thanks for the great content. You’re very informative. I live in Central Ky., and am pretty sure my grass is your typical Ky Bluegrass. It looks great in the spring and gets ugly in our hot/humid summers (about three months), then it gets nice again in the Fall. We keep it mowed alittle higher in summer about 3” and about 2”-2.5” in the Spring/Fall. No irrigation and we don’t really water at all throughout the season. 😅 I want to overseed it with a perennial rye grass to keep that green look all year, however after watching your videos it’s got me questioning the type of lawn care person I am, lol. We have never de-thatched the lawn, I have however, started to aerate and can see some difference. Should I go with a PRG or a Tall Fescue? Also, you touched on when grass goes to seed heads and mowing that out. I want to hear more about that, bc that could be one of our issues as well. When does each grass type do this and the best timing to cut it so it doesn’t. 😊 Rebecca
Nice lawn and informative videos! Going to put down annual rye for the first time time this year. I wanted to put some extra dirt down in low areas. Would you recommend doing this before I put the rye down in the fall or should I put extra dirt when i seed with Bermuda in the spring. Thanks for any insight. (Living in Texas)
Currently looking out the window at my beautiful 4", 22 day old TTTF/bluegrass mix. I couldn't believe I had germination after 5 days! The amount of people that have stopped to compliment my work has been incredibly rewarding. Thank you, Ryan, for this amazing seed and for these videos that have made me confident as an amateur lawn enthusiast.
Ryan, I live in Northeast PA and on September 15 I reseeded a 60x30 slope in my yard after putting down new top soil. I covered with a thin layer of peat moss, and the Used a straw blanket to protect the seed and the soil from erosion. I have pretty good growth but there are a few patches that will need more seed. Can I do this through the straw blanket? How do I get good seed to soil contact without compromising the new grass? And how would I water the new seed versus the new grass since they require differen watering techniques? Any advice would be appreciated
I am adding some Kentucky Bluegrass. I have seeded the spots that need it and generally followed the recommendations you have given. However, I had some last minute work trips come up that prevented me from watering consistently. There are still some patches that have not germinated. Basically it is the more dry spots. Did I waste the seed, or can I get water on it consistently when I become available again? I seeded about 2 weeks ago.
@ryanknorr, wonder, I remember you had vid a few years ago I think. No irrigation, was for a friend or friend of family front yard. Any update on that??
Ryan: I live in Western NY and the soil near Lake Ontario is poor and rife with clay and shale only inches from the topsoil. Lawn diseases and stressors are more prevalent here due to the poor soil quality. Grass roots have difficulty growing taproot deep down into soil. Best I can do is to topsdress my lawn renovation and put down ferts and nutrients designed to give better root structure. I need professional advice on this lawn conundrum. My grass is not growing as fast as it should be. Tried pre-germinating and we had a near drought end of September into October. I then panicked and turned to perennial rye and even contractor seed to just get a lawn for Christ sake. Yes, I did core aeration and the works. Did endless research and watched every credible UA-cam channel I could. Any advice???
Ryan, as you know we had a pretty warm fall here in Iowa and overseeding in September would of just lead to dead dry grass seed. Now that it's starting to cool off, If I plant grass seed and get it germinated and coming up about and inch, will it make it thru the winter or is it just a waste of time and money?
I don't recall if you mentioned it, but when is it too early/late for fall seeding? What should the hottest temps to start or the lowest temps to avoid?
Overcrowding where the plants are too close together and struggle to compete with each other for nutrients. It can also be hard to dry it out so fungus can be an issue
I find this thatch is your harvest and when you make rich compost from your hard work it's like a math equation science experiment you just keep alive add that compost back with the over seed for any areas that need it doesn't get any better than that
@@MichaelThorne_za thankful I have a large yard, I do my best. Watering, fertilizing but we've had a drought this summer and it looks terrible rn. I’m going to overseed 1000 ft.² of my front lawn that has always been pretty bad shape. Must’ve gotten bad sod because the rest of the yard looks good. This past Saturday I bought a green works electric Thatcher and used it after cutting the lawn on a low setting. I raked the clippings and bagged them. I purchased a bag of Jonathan green seed and starting fertilizer from them. I’ve had 2 inches of rain in the last couple days after a month of drought. It’s pretty bumpy and has a few low spots. My plan is to buy a yard of soil compost mix and put it down on top of the grass, I’m confused as to whether I should put the seed and the fertilizer down first and then slightly cover with this mix or put the mix down first then the seed? I am in Southeast Wisconsin. The Thatcher also has a scarifier blade. I’m not gonna aerate. Don’t have one available in my area and too heavy for me to handle any advice appreciated. I have a sprinkler system there.
Do the soil/compost mix first and then seed on top. Then lightly run a rake or a garden weasel over the seed to get it mixed with the soil and you’ll be good. If you seed first and then put the soil mix on top, you run the risk of the seed being a little too buried under the soil and it may not be able to push through.
Mine sucked this year too, but I did it mid-august. Temps were way too hot and I couldn't get down enough water (no irrigation system so I'm dragging hoses).
Same for me. I had to apply more seed and use a lawn cover on the bare spots. The cover made all the difference. You can definitely see the difference in areas where the cover was used. It provided great germination results.
Maybe it’s because you are not able to support the method or are against it, many others speak in favor of pre-germinating the seeds by soaking in water as one example. Very curious of your thoughts or success with this method.

Same three years ago and an overseed each year around Sept 10. Very pleased at the germination rate and the color is EXCELLENT

Hey Ryan! Would there be any benefit to doing a fall nitrogen blitz on a rye grass renovation that was planted this past spring?
I never know how to open the bags with the string
I did a lawn renovation on September 1, but I have a couple of spots showing some brown patch. How soon can I treat after overseeding ?
I've gotten mixed information on this but would it be acceptable to power rake or dethatch a fescue lawn prior to overseeding?
Are there any discount codes active? Looking to purchase the gen 3 striping kit
Have you ever had to use Mefenoxam at time of seeding? Have you do it out here in PNW when doing fall seedings with shade but not in spring
I had trouble with crabgrass this year. Is it safe to power rake, aerate and overseer?
do you power rake or dethach before aeration?

I don't recall if you mentioned it, but when is it too early/late for fall seeding? What should the hottest temps to start or the lowest temps to avoid?
If you have water I don't worry about going too early. You want 8 weeks before a frost if possible
Will leaving the plugs create a bumpy surface??
No, they quickly break down, you can mulch over them if u don't like looking at them.
so no need for topsoil with overseeding? what about a topdressing like peat moss or manure?
4:32 he says because of the aeration he's not topdressing
What's the risk in going heavy on seed during an overseed? Like you mis-measure and do 10lbs per 1,000sf. TY!
Overcrowding where the plants are too close together and struggle to compete with each other for nutrients. It can also be hard to dry it out so fungus can be an issue
Ryan, I live in the hot grass zone - I have a Zoysia lawn. How should I apply this procedure?
@@recordman555 zoysia spreads so you just mow, fertilize, irrigate in the spring/summer and it will work to spread and get thicker
What about TTTF? Should I apply fertilizer down with the seed or 3 weeks after seed down?
At time of seeding is fine
@@ryanknorrlawncare thank you!
How long after overseeding should you wait before mowing for the first time?
When the grass is about an inch taller than where you want to keep the height

No more than a quarter inch of soil on top of new seed. And rent a sod roller for seed to soil contact for better results.
Is it better to put the seed down in the morning when it’s calm and there’s dew on the ground?

It's not necessary and can mess up the seed if you don't do it correctly so I don't utilize that method.
Any reason why no tenacity or torocity sprayed after seeding that section?
It's late Sept so crabgrass pressure is very minimal now and tenacity bleaches ryegrass
