i remember being a student i hanged up in a guitar store, the guys were nice, talking guitar and cars and life. one day came a machete, i think to tthis day still the best amp they made me try. wish i could find one today
It is interesting to watch this now knowing that the amp didn't sell. I have two of these beasts, they are the best amp Fender ever made. Great for Blues all the way to bang your head.
Bought 2 new a few yrs back. Gave one to my lifelong friend and he loves it. The one I still have is for sale only at the right price. Mine's still test drove lightly but never played. Beautiful Amp.
it's a shame Fender discontinued this model. It sounds good to me. It has that bright spunk a modern american high-gain has, but retains the articulation needed to hear each notes.
I hear this too. Surprising. The SuperSonic heavy sound is way too compressed. This "breathes" and has an articulate sound that doesn't sound exactly like every other metal amp.
probably one the amp i tried i liked the most, with all the guitars in the shop around my place. loved it buit WAYYYYY to expensive and powerful for me at the time :/
I’m glad I bought this before reading how many people bashed it on the internet. I gotta admit though for a good while I was questioning my taste in gear after reading the internet’s thoughts on it and how they were very different from my opinion.
I must say from what originally heard about this amp I was skeptical at best. Now hearing it and all that it can do I am REALLY impressed. I thought a first this would be a drawn out long video but it made all the sense in the world because you showed so much. GREAT JOB.
Update: Been playing the Machete as my main gigging amp for some time now and it is fantastic. It is biased a bit cold from the factory. Biasing it up to 75% and changing the 6L6 power tubes (I use JJs) makes a good sounding amp sound phenomenal. I also scored a Chapman ML-1 which came out to me in southern California pretty out of whack. Frets were uneven and needed to be ground. Sounds/plays ok now.. This is a VERY heavy guitar. I need to play it sitting down! Getting old sucks.
Chappers, I was enraptured by your playing in this video. Captain did a great job mediating between a player's appetite and a salesman's pitch as always, but I think you especially did a great job demoing it!
I play on a Machete for almost 4 years now and I can tell you it's a very pleasant, powerful and polyvalent amp. What they don't really show in the vid is that it comes with a footswitch that controls channel 1 or 2, the boost on channel 1, the effects loop (if any) and the amp digital reverb. Channel 1 has a great clean definition, although it is not a 100% typical Fender clean sound; channel 2 can clearly be compared to any hi gain channel that equips most of the usual hard rock / metal amp brands. Plus the notch and the damping are very effective. Really an extremely goog amp that, as said in the vid, is not very successful due to Fender's reputation of "clean amps manufacturer": well, that's a pitty!
Pierre Lacroix yes! I've had mine for almost a year now and it had been sitting in this store for several years! It's a fantastic amp and you can get almost any sound out of it.
Sorry Lee but the "Notch" feature was introduced by Paul Rivera while working at Fender during the early to mid 80's and can be found on a few of the "Red Knob" amps inc the twin and it's head, the Dual Showman. Paul continues to use the notch feature on his own amps. It's just been awhile since Fender featured it on contemporary designs. Cheers!
Such a versatile pro-level amp. A cryin shame FENDER doesn't keep it in the stall as a limited run each year. This doesn't sell but the 100-watt SuperSonic does?! Really? Guess Egnater must be kicking their boot-tays.
Didn't know the amp existed till this demo and I'm so glad you guys demo'd it. Tbh, I've never heard Rob's ML-1 sound better till you guys switched to the dirty channel.
Captain, you are a HELL of a player. Thanks for all the time you put into these videos for us guitar players, other musicians to have a great way of the preliminary "check it out" thing.
Playing a song or so exactly like the original creator of the song shows tons of determination and attention to detail , but making it a goal to always play by the book shows that the person is too afraid to explore their own sound. I find as a teacher and a professional vocalist/guitarist that people who worry about sounding correct rather than flowing with their own self image tend to be boring players. And most off the time are very boring people or lack self image. good video
2 channels that will do a lot more then many other amps with more channels...ive personally never seen a tube amp that is soooo versatile as this..its full tube and yet abel to go from as clean as it gets to as dirty as it gets..a pad function that cleans-up humbuckers, notch control, and even an "ISF" type system..first channel with gain boost (which makes it basically a third channel)...its a perfect amp..love it..
I have learned to trust the Captain and Robs advice when it come to buying gear. You have not steered me wrong yet. thanks guys!! I just bought a Machete amp!! I want a Chapman guitar I just can't decide which one to get.
Coppulor I purchased it off a guy on Reverb.com. It's great place to find new and used gear. I play classic rock and blues. I love this amp. I have a EVH 5150 III and I like the Machete much more. Much more user friendly. Great tone, very responsive adjustment. It will sound great with any type of music you want. I bought a used one. If I could only have one amp the Machete would be the one hands down. The only complaints I have heard is the looks of the amp. I like the look. Does not look like a traditional Fender or sound like one. I would recommend this amp.
I was just watching another of your videos and you mentioned the Fender Machete review, so here I am. I love it! And I really enjoy you guys. Lots of info, great sound, good production, it's all here. I would like to make a minor suggestion. When reviewing a new amp, or any gear, don't stick it behind the couch. Place it right between you two and give some tight shots of the controls while your pointing the features out. Other than that, no issues! Just trying to help.
The Orange shape nob changes the clipping form of the distortion, IE, hard/soft clipping. Soft clipping being more bluesy (overdrive) hard more metal-extreme metal (distortion). The ISF is a panoramic EQ that changes which frequencies are effected by the gain channel. The gain type stays the same. Orange basicly put a potentiometer between 2 components. Blackstar designed a new equalizer, Fender mimics the equalizer not the waveshape. Hope you understand, it's not very self explanatory haha.
Hey Chapman & Captain, I found something on the web for an easy amp mod. I went to Mercury Magnetics website & brought some IEC power cord for the amp. The gauge on the wire is a 14 AWG gauge instead of the 18 AWG gauge, amp companies would supply you . I tried it on my VOX, Fender & Marshall amp. The hiss sound quiet down. My VOX sounded horrible on certain chords and now sounds great. Tried it on the Machete & put it on UA-cam for what it would gain from a thicker power cord. Cheers, Flood!
Great review guys very thorough and detailed which is why I like your reviews. I bought this amp over a Marshall jvm 205c, and the Blackstar Ht 50 based on your demo of this amp which really surprised me because I like Blackstar also. It was too hard to pass up getting the classic fender clean sound and then a good blues overdrive sound and a classic hard rock or metal sound all with no pedals. Fender did overprice the amp which will hurt sales of it but I bought it on a payment plan.
Ha ha no, not at all... let me clarify. We always have gags lined up for every video we do, but the Machete blew us away so much - we literally forgot to do anything funny! If products are not good, I don't review them or we just voice our concerns ;-)
What they should've done is slap the Jackson or Charvel brand on there and released it as a game changing amp. With the Fender brand, it's unfortunately likely to slip into obscurity.
I watched a couple of videos about that amp. I think it sounds great and it seems to have a good variety of sounds suitable for any kind of music. The reason why I'm not going to consider buying it (at least in near future) is that it's a 50W amp. I noticed that it can be switched to 22W or 7W mode, but it's price tag is too big for my wallet right now :) Thanks for your response anyway, I really appreciate it.
WHOA THIS AMP IS SICK! Breakthrough for Fender for sure! Omg how i would like to have one... You can even tell by how much fun these guys are havin! Dear baby enus oh goodness please santa
I have a 15W all-tube right now...and Hughes & Kettner Tubemeister 18 has a 5W and a 1W mode :) but you're right, a 5W amp can be good (for example Blackstar HT-5, as you mentioned). One of the reasons that I'm looking for a little bigger amp, is that I might start a band with some friends in the next few months, and if I buy a head/cabinet set, I can later upgrade my gear with a bigger head, if a 20W amp isn't enough, but for now it is good. For home use as well, if it has 5W or even 1W mode :)
This Amp really surprised me, in a good way. A Fender guitar always sounds great thru a Fender amp :-) Nice video guys. Was that Lola barking in the background?
@dggz9510 It's just me noodling. I like the way the e goes to the c. I think it sounds a but like a blues version of here I go again by Whitesnake, so I probably can't claim it as my own!! Glad you like it anyway, Cheers Lee
I tried it at GC. Pretty decent sounding amp. Especially on clean and crunch. Plus it sells at under $1000 at the GC I was at. Now it isn't as good to me as my modded Egnator and of course not close to my Engl or Bogner.
That particular ML-1 I believe is loaded with a dimarzio Mo Joe in the bridge, and dimarzio choppers in the middle and neck. I believe he elaborates in another video. You can find them at any online music store.
Great review and that amp seems extremely versatile and sounds great to my ears on this vid. Thanks for putting this together... going to go check one out.
Carvin V3M. It's great, I love mine. They come in a combo and a head/cabinet setup. I have mine running through a 2X10 and it just sounds great. There a lot of videos about them -- Cheers
@MrPrytania1 The title screen is meant to be sarcastic (ie we're justing making fun of ourselves). We're not trying to make ourselves look like film stars!!

This will be the second amp I bought because of you guys. Problem is that guitar (and your playing) is pretty awesome sounding! Any way to get one of those guitars or something close to it! I'll let you guys know how I like the amp once it gets here. BTQ I bought the Machete slightly used for $1300 including shipping so there are some good deals out there. Thanks for the great review!
Any chance of an Egnater review? Any amp model would do I'd really just like to hear what you make of the brand :) If I had to suggest one though I would say the Tweaker. Great little amp with plenty of features. Hope you see this Chappers!
You could get it shipped over from Australia, I see them in a few music shops where I am at Brisbane. I'm sure it wouldn't take much to get one shipped over.
Killer playing, enticed to spend some on a new amp. Thanks! Used to own a Mesa Studoo 22 back in the 80's. This seems to be the amp I'd klikwvto own. Thanks for god demo! Cheers, and jeep fiddling with he knobs,....

I'd hold onto one of these if I had one. Will be a collectors item one day, imo.
+Northaleus Velanthor if you had 30 yrs maybe, otherwise dump it.its a turd bucket.
They sell for like 5k now, so good call
I’m glad I bought this before reading how many people bashed it on the internet. I gotta admit though for a good while I was questioning my taste in gear after reading the internet’s thoughts on it and how they were very different from my opinion.

Captain also did an excellent demo job with the tonal nuances in his playing
Lots of old bands got great sounds from those old Peaveys. They deserve more respect than they get from the majority of people
Sounds amazing, very cool vintagy tones, and of course the distorted.
Update: Been playing the Machete as my main gigging amp for some time now and it is fantastic. It is biased a bit cold from the factory. is it valve?
Yes full valve: 5 x 12AX7A for the preamps, 1 x 12AT7 for the reverb, and 2 x 6L6GC for the power amp
Pierre Lacroix yes! I've had mine for almost a year now and it had been sitting in this store for several years! It's a fantastic amp and you can get almost any sound out of it.

that's a great metallicasound indeed :) that one is mine very soon !!! what a fenomenal amp
Captain, you are a HELL of a player. Thanks for all the time you put into these videos for us guitar players, other musicians to have a great way of the preliminary "check it out" thing.
best fender amp ever. now they're versatile and can play metal or anything :D
I think this is your best video since the Squier Classic Vibe you did last year. I mean, i love all your videos but this one is amazing! Thanks!
It can be, it's 50 Watts - all valve! But it has a volume knob and also gave a great bedroom tone ;-)
Playing a song or so exactly like the original creator of the song shows tons of determination and attention to detail , but making it a goal to always play by the book shows that the person is too afraid to explore their own sound.

You guys are seriously de BEST on youtube ! you always have the best demo , you're are extremely funny and super talented !
That Strat tone is awesome!!
I have learned to trust the Captain and Robs advice when it come to buying gear. You have not steered me wrong yet. thanks guys!! I just bought a Machete amp!! I want a Chapman guitar I just can't decide which one to get.
off ebay? how do you like it? what kind of music do you play? please give use the deets buddy, pleeeeeeeeeez! lol I want one!

great feedback thank you!
I bought this one from Andertons. Sounds even better in real. Much better than my previous amp, Boogie mk iv.

When he plugged that strat in, it made me smile!
That strat tone was unbelievable!
God damn the Cap'n's tone in this video is incredible.
The Captain is such a classy player. Great touch, great feel for it. Doesn't try the acrobatics, just smooth hands.

+Diablo Canyon a typical PA or guitar amplifier's around 4 ohms, more powerful ones can be around 2 ohms, but normally, between 16, 8 and 4
I have a 15W all-tube right now...and Hughes & Kettner Tubemeister 18 has a 5W and a 1W mode :) but you're right, a 5W amp can be good (for example Blackstar HT-5, as you mentioned). I still love the shit out of this amp.
that strat just sounded great
This Amp really surprised me, in a good way. A Fender guitar always sounds great thru a Fender amp :-) Nice video guys. Was that Lola barking in the background?
Rob your playing is fantastic! :D
They need a head version of this... this sounds kickass! Thanks, Chappers!
@dggz9510 It's just me noodling. I like the way the e goes to the c. I think it sounds a but like a blues version of here I go again by Whitesnake, so I probably can't claim it as my own!! Glad you like it anyway, Cheers Lee
I see
Chappers is taking a back seat to the young gun on the heavy metal side of things. This amp is a real sleeper.
I tried it at GC. Pretty decent sounding amp. Especially on clean and crunch. Plus it sells at under $1000 at the GC I was at. Now it isn't as good to me as my modded Egnator and of course not close to my Engl or Bogner.
The guitar he is playing is a Chapman Guitars ML1. you can get them from Andertons here in the uk and they will ship to the USA
absolutly. if the tubemeister does the sound you are looking for, its a great amp. looking forward to buy it, too :)
Thanks for putting this together... going to go check one out.
its not about amount of channels. its about tone! and this amp has it!!
Carvin V3M. It's great, I love mine. They come in a combo and a head/cabinet setup. I have mine running through a 2X10 and it just sounds great. There a lot of videos about them
-- Cheers
He played master of puppets alternate picked sinner(nah i kid it didn't sound that bad)
I'm so in love with Lee's playing, farrrrk I just wanna grab a Strat and jam with him!
Badass intro ;) and great amp :O really impressed by this !
Hi Josh, that is a new riff I've been working on for my band Dorje ;-)
I'm just going to release it on the next Rob Chapman album along with the other 9 awesome tunes I have lined up ;-)
best amp iv heard in a while
This is an amazingly versatile amp
By the way, great playing guys! And the amp is phenomenal.
@MrPrytania1 The title screen is meant to be sarcastic (ie we're justing making fun of ourselves). We're not trying to make ourselves look like film stars!!
BEST AMP IN THE WORLD!!! i got a live demo at winter NAMM. I LOVE FENDER AMPS!!! i love fender everything ;]
Best Fender Amp! IMO ... Cap N' Chappers, another great video!
Thanks
yeah, it does sound really good, I am a fender fan anyway, so a little biased, but wasn't expecting those sounds to be honest, it probably sounds even sweeter in real life, rather than video
The head and cabs are now on Fenders website.
Another great demo - thanks guys. Would love to hear your take on the Laney Ironheart and how it compares to the Machete :)
The Laney has this kind of potmeter. The Enhance pot is do the same on the Laney TF300
Great demo, lads. I need to check one of those out!
I will definitely check out the ml1! Just played my first gig with the machete. it was like bringing a shotgun to a fistfight! Sounded great. The speaker sucks but I haven't hear a v30 I like yet. going to replace it with a weber silver bell and get some JJ tubes. It is a cool amp - thumbs up!
Well as I already answered to another guy suggesting a 5W amp for home use, Hughes & Kettner Tubemeister has a 5W and a 1W mode, and it still has 18W which is enough for playing in a band, on stage as well (if has a good cabinet, and is miked).
I love my Machete, thank you for turning me on to it!
Thanks guys for the demo, but now I want one of this bad boys !!
These amps are bloody awesome
Captains definitely improved!
Thanks for the answer. I'm considering it since I'm looking for a more metal sound compared to my Hot Rod deluxe ;) I also need something that won't blow my head off immediately after switching it on. I have to try it out myself.
Great video Capt. and Monkeylord! =)
Thanks!
Love the dampening feature
I tried adapting to alternative picking on Master of Puppets myself, went back to down picking and it's so much better I reckon.
Thanks dude, basically I guess when I really connect with a piece of gear it comes through in the playing!
There are some pieces of gear that sound great to me, but just feel wrong which is a subjective thing, then I have to work harder... this amp just felt great ;-)
hey man, this review is the reason I bought one of these, thank you for introducing me to my favorite amp ever!
Very nice sounding amp. Friend of mine have one. Sounds way better than the other fender amps which to me sounds cheap and tinny compared to most boutique amps. Only one big issue, it is very big and heavy.......Not quite as versatile as my Engl but closer in quality and sound. Although it is quite a bit cheaper. Way better than the supersonic line which is the closest they have with much fuller sound.
Damn, that clean channel with the extra gain stage....damn.....
Thanks mate, that is my tune "Tree Of Life" from my album "Bare Bones" which is on iTunes ;-)
I have one & It's a keeper, one of the best out there!
Awesome video,, I have had one a while and still haven't found all the tones in it. Just misses a master volume, as a very loud amp for home.
Damn, that clean channel pushed is like MAR-SHALL
chappers, i heard so many "dorje" esque riffs, when is the ep coming out??? i cannot wait, its tearing me apart!
Yeah a head would be great.
The combo is nice though. I hate carting around heads and cabinets to club gigs.
22.49 Whats that sweet music captain is playing?
Holy shit tasty playing Lee
that thing sounds fucking nice! better than any rectifier i've ever heard. need to find one to try! and it's still got the nice fendery cleans!
