In April 2015 I was honoured to have the president of Boss/Roland Yoshihiro Ikegami visit me in my flat in Brighton for a chat/consultation. He wanted to ask if I had any suggestions/feedback or ideas for products they could make which was awesome! I suggested exactly the same thing I told Boss's designer Kosuke Takata when he asked to meet me in 2013 - make a Roland cube head, but simplify it and bring it out under the Boss brand. I wanted a fuss free, zero "Option paralysis" design which would work perfectly at home or as a dependable pro touring back up. I am pleased to say that the new Katana range is exactly this and I am proud to have played a very small part at the beginning of its conception. I am not endorsed by Boss or in any way affiliated to the product, just honoured to have been a small part of the story. Rob
Rob Chapman Wow, nice! So many people in the comments in other videos for this amp have said the amp doesn't deliver. I thought it was great each time. I was curious about what you thought but really happy that you played a part in what this line has become. Very curious about the 2x12 option vs the 1x12 option...
Hey Rob here's an idea for a video. Get a bunch of different guitars (fenders, gibsons, chapmans eg.) and put the same pickups on all of them. Will they sound similar?? Kinda thought that u could do something like that. It would be so interesting man, thanks a lot :)))
Hey rob! Just wanted to share this pedal with you, i was wondering if you could maybe review it since it apparently sounds really cool and unique. www.zvex.com/products/instant-lo-fi-junky Also congrats on having the president of Boss on the show thats amazing!
If you put gummy bears in your mouth [dont swallow] whilst practicing! it acts like a sugar drip straight into your blood stream and will make you excel three times as fast as without gummys...
Dude, seriously, just do YOU! No need to be someone else. I’m a shredder. I can play REALLY fast, extremely precise, and yes, I can pretty much emulate most popular guitarist. The magic is NOT emulating! The magic is pouring your soul into each and every note. Let your ears relax, let your fingers relax, just play what you love! Don’t let it get complicated! I can shred with the best of them, but that IS ONLY FINGER GYMNASTICS! Keep it simple. Just play what sounds good to you. If it sounds good to you, it probably sounds good to anyone listening. Hope this helps.
Just had my katana 100w combo delivered - Sounds even better than I hoped for! and it can go fing LOUD! if you want it to! Bedroom levels for me are about 8 o'clock max on the 50w setting - and about 11-ish on the 0.5W. The effects are premium quality! Especially the Mod - FX - Reverbs. It also takes distortion pedals great in the front! Not tinny or thin in the slightest - sounds full and lots of bass if needed (I only have my bass set half way and its perfect for heavy rock tones) Have already updated the amp via USB which was easy enough and downloaded some of the boss tone presets and they are excellent. It sounds far better in real life than in the video - Rob is not exaggerating in the slightest.
Richard Clark ........ I have the 100 watt 1_12. And only use the 0.5 watt setting in the band... Loud enough! We use electronic drums and don't play crazy loud...
Hey man, great to hear you're enjoying it! One quick question though... How much leverage do you really have when it comes to changing the preset effects that come in the amp? I'm really looking forward to getting this thing, but I'm honestly not going to be playing much of the heavy stuff, so I planned on changing the effects to something else that suited my needs in a much better way. Ya think I should get it or no? Thanks!
I never usually fangirl over products on here. But this is AMAZING. The crunch sound was phenomenal imho. I don't need another amp but I'm almost foaming at the outh to get on of these. And knowing it's a Boss, it's probably going to outlive all of us.
One of the reasons I started watching these videos years ago now, was because these two and the editing just crack me up! It's nice to have a good belly laugh where anyone else in the house thinks you're losing it! Thanks guys! Great review and a kick ass little amp!
My first amp was a cube 15. Wish I’d kept it, but I ‘upgraded’ to tube amps. I’d kill to find that old model again and just put it on the metal stack setting and play everything on there haha.
Been doing research for my next amp for few weeks now and I'm down to about five at the moment. And damn if you know, best reviews for all those amps I've found right here, with the Chappers and the Capt! So thank you both. You really make the best reviews by far in UA-cam.
I want to get one for my son. Boss was a name I grew up on. Personally, the 50+ pedal options is somewhat of dream come true. Portable. Lee, the digital delay sounded incredible for 1 second when you brought it up to 35%. Backing down to 20% made it illegible. Some flange added would have been mega. Metal heads like the Mach 2 face melting distortion, with delays.
I’ve gotten so bored with playing guitar for the past few months, and years, but I picked this amp up yesterday.....I played for 5 hours today! Such a Boss of an amp
I'm a tube amp snob... I love my tubes... I was at guitar center with a couple of friends. We played through this was quite impressed... I mean seriously quite impressed... Although the price has gone up on these... I'd still buy one... This is probably the best non tube amp on the market. The sound was amazing...
Watched you guys for a while now. Bought a D-18 in 1970, spent most of its life in the hawk shop. I'm 62 now and picking up the love of guitar again. Guess it's never too late. Keep the videos coming, you seem such good friends. Mark from Albuqueruque.
Watched this vid 6 or 8 times. Went out and bought the 50. In my 40 years of mediocre, on-again off-again guitar playing, I've never enjoyed an amp so much.
Since picking up my Katana 1x12 100w I cant lay my geeetar down. Tremendous tones and fx and particularly the price... holy shit the price is phenominal. Nice one Boss absolutely nailed it.
I think the Boss sounds pretty sweet on this video. I would love to try it out! As for Ibanez they probably should start making pedals if they haven't already (which they probably have).
Ah, thanks for the feedback guys. Just goes to show how outta touch I am. I use a MG 30 DFX Marshall with Boss ME25 affects board. I've used that combo for a couple of years now and it does what I need. Not the best but not the worst haha!
Probably the best little practice amp I have ever heard , the ability to use a acoustic guitar with it too is a really good feature for acoustic and electric players and even the fact that you can get some different settings for types of playing is amazing. Plug a wah and distortion pedal into it and go and do a bunch of gigs! Definitely a buy for me , thanks Chappers and the Capt
Played through one the other day. In a nut shell, its a revamped Roland Cube amp... The acoustic option isn't to make your electric guitar sound like an acoustic guitar, its intention is allow you to plug in your actual acoustic guitar, its not a an acoustic guitar simulator.
Just started to pick up my guitar again for the first time in about 10 years. Still love my instrument but wanted an amp update. This video helped me make my decision to go for the Katana 100. WAY more power than I need but wanted the option of 4 channels. Now I can't stop playing! Absolutly fantastic piece of equipment. Keep up the videos. I'm learning loads.
I bought the Fender GT200 and took it back swapped it for the Boss katana 100. I love it so simple to use on the fly and the sounds are so good. I have had valve amps in the past and never liked solid-state amps but this amp is amazing!
Excellent amp, and excellent review. Funny stuff in this video too, so good job to the video team: 1) "Captain POV Cam" and the "Measurement" ruler on screen had me laughing. The Captain's description of how simple the layout was and how easy it was to get great tones out of this amp sold me. Chapper's playing always great as usual. I've got a Line 6 amp similar to this, and that's the amp I plug into the most. I think Boss has a winner here.
yoboiii Gaming of course, but not directly on the amp. There is a usb out that connects to your computer that allows you to adjust any possible sound on the amp. You can even download patches to add to the available channels on the amp to make is sound like any tone from your fav musicians. I added a Steve Vai, Metallica, and Green Day patch.
Exactly, who fn cares. As long as it works. Do you all realize that Japanese cars are made in the U.S., U.S. cars are made there, we out source to India for tech. jobs. they come here to work, etc etc etc. It's called global economy. Just the way it is anymore .
Just picked one up. It's loud alright. Pretty well balanced tonally & it's tone cuts through the speakers at any volume. Not as forward & metallic on the gain, as the valve combos at $300-$400. It's pretty good though. As someone taking guitar as my second instrument, who was finicky about tone & knew nothing & quit on unbearably shitty & broken gear as a teen, this thing is amazing for what I need right now. Thank you Roland/Boss. I can finally venture beyond scales without puking over my 5chords.
I picked up the Katana 50 last week. I'm super happy with it. Boss tone studio is pretty cool, it even let's you mix up the chain on the pedals. Good one Boss, and another great video boys.
im sorry man.. i just cant watch a whole video of yours... everytime i hear you play i just need to stop the video and play guitar. your playing is so inspiring!
Literally went out and bought this amp today because of this video. No regrets. Been looking for something smaller and more portable compared to the Marshall half stack I have and this amp is great so far! haven't put my guitar down all night. Also the fact that there is a standby setting on a solid state amp is great. Idk why other companies haven't caught onto that yet or in the past.
Hey guys .... I now own one but you did’nt mention that one of the coolest things about these amps is that you can listen to it with ur head phones and even plug in a Backing Track using the aux input. Awesome !!
It looks like 2016 is the year where digital modelling / emulation really arrived. Between the Kemper, the Amplifi etc etc, it's just got ridiculous now! I wish I was a beginner guitarist in 2016 - the choice is mind blowing. good stuff. there will always be a huge market for those little glass bottles, but damn there's so many options!!!
i was in the local music shop here this past weekend and heard one of these. Was very shocked at the tone that it was getting. I thought it was a Blackstar at first. Im more of a fender guy in and out for everyday stuff i do. But these have a nice tone that i really liked.
Value for money meter is off the scale with this amp. Ive had all sorts of amps over the years, even went ampless at one point with a POD x3 and a PA. This amp is on my Xmas list for sure
"it's funny when things are simple and we look for the complex route because we're used to that" true. this is what they mean when they say guitar is life
Not bad but I feel that that the Yamaha THR series is still the best practice amp out there. The distortion on those things just feels right. Why do most digital amps fail at getting good high gain sounds?
+Seamus McFlanery You really think? I once got to try the 'X' version and it was kinda disappointing, especially after all the praise I read about these things.
DerEchteBold Yeah I sold the X version but I still have the normal one and it sounds great. The key is plugging it into a computer and using the software to fine tune the fizz out of the distortion channels. I tried that with the X and where the yellow one had good base channels, the X did not. The Dimebag channel sounded like ass and the two Powerball channels were just meh. The Brown tone channels were great though.
+Seamus McFlanery We had it hooked up to the owners laptop and I tried to fiddle with the settings, without much satisfying result, the effects are quite good but the sounds do not have any amp-like quality, although many reviews claimed they had. Before he bought it I actually advised him to get the standard version, because he's playing bass but he saw some intriguing video with the 'x' and got that one instead. At I least I could help him to figure out how to record with the thing ...took us 3 hours though, guess we shouldn't have smoked that spliff before attempting it ; )
Chappers is a guitarist that lets the tone and melody come to him. He is friggin’ awesome! I’m only saying this so that those guitarist out there wanting to be “as good” as Rob Chapman can get a clue as to his attack on the strings. He has a light touch. If that is what you want, you should take a delicate approach to your picking style. Seriously, Rob is special (and rare). YOU WILL NEVER BE HIM! But! You can (and should) be YOU!
You two guys are big tunas! How lucky you are to be able to play with all the toys available to musicians. You do need to move the pre-volume up to max and then dial in the master volume just enough so that the saturation levels can be heard. Sort of Carlos Santana type of saturation. If the amp being tested has various output levels i.e. .50 watts, 1 watt, 5 watt, 20 watt, 50 watt or what have you, please show us how it sounds please. It would be so informative. I thank you guys, one day I'd like to go to England and to Guilford and visit with you both as well as the rest of the gang!
Yamaha did DG range of amplifiers in late 90, which were like first modelling amps, and still it is just wonderfull, best you can have, and motorised pots were icing of the cake.
I would also like to see how easy or hard it will be to load new pedals into this amp. A fuzz with an overdrive pedal would be great to see if this new amp can sound good with them.
LOVE this channel. It is a pleasure to see the joy you experience reviewing gear. And you have such natural interactions. With digital amp simulation becoming so good, I wonder if you'd consider a comparison between amps like this, pedal boards (e.g. Ax fx vs line 6 etc), and software sims (e.g. TH3, IK Multimedia).
The biggest question of all... how does the Boss Katana compare to the Roland Blues Cube? Or the equivalent Blackstar ID? ...Line 6 Spider V, Marshall CODE, VOX AV or VTX, Peavey Vypyr 3 Let's see a shootout! And also, how well does the Boss Katana deal with external pedals?
Blows the spider V out the water - and from what I have read on the Vguitarforums, it also destroys the code (code 50 received 2/10 compared to 8/10 for katana 100w), it doesn't have the noise level issues of the code or vypyr 3. It does distortion and heavier sounds much better than the Vox models. Can't comment on the Blackstar ID - but from what I read unless you particularly like the stereo effects, the Katana does everything else much better. The katana takes external pedals great! and the 100w version has FX loop too.
Thanks for this... I also heard that whereas the Roland Blues Cube "sounds" like a 6L6 type tube, the Boss Katana will sound more like an EL34? That true? The thing is, I have a Blackstar ID:60... sounds great and all, but not pedal friendly... bottom end just lacks too much when using gain pedals and dynamic response is too compressed...
Yes it's true about the EL34 - that statement was direct from Boss. The amp really takes pedals well - I have a metal distortion pedal in front of mine and the sound is fantastic for both a classic rock sound and modern metal. I find the bass is fine at about 12 O'Clock for rock but these types of things are so personal. I have the 100w so not sure about the 50w - I have read that the 50w may lack the full sound of the 100w but haven't heard the 50w personally. The best thing is to try get a demo in a shop to check you can get the sound you want - I think you can dial in any sound you like on this amp! It is certainly not tinny or fuzzy or thin sounding though, so don't worry about that (that was my worry given the price) - I was over the moon when I first played it - the stock speaker in the 100w combo is impressive and can handle everything you throw at it. Not a compressed sounding response or muddy boxy sound at any of the pre-amp settings - just aggressive immediate full frequency gain sounds - leaving lots of room to add compression or an EQ pedal to adjust to your taste - it's a very dynamic sound - the high gain channels have so much going on in the sound you just want to listen to them all day - responds well to guitar volume changes and can produce many different sounding gain responses - they are really a breath of fresh air! You just want to crank it and play for ages - lots of fun. Obviously this is all just my opinion I hope you get the chance to try one out - I enjoy blues - rock and modern metal sounds and find the amp does all these really well to my ear. As a side note - the headphone output is excellent and the aux-in (through headphones) is nice and clear.
I have a fender machete head, and now I really want one of the heads since you mentioned the "practice speaker". Plus a solid solid state, with an fx loop built in that I trust (i mean, they make the pedals), means I can leave my fx loop on my main, and use this as a practice level amp. With a fender machete and a boss katana I'd totally cut through

Rob I listened to 3 other popular UA-cam guys who demo guitars and amps and you’re the onky one that I finished listen to.
That brown sound is sick. Go Boss for giving us Waza Craft tones at affordable prices.
I bought this recently and it's incredible to play at 0.5 watts if anyone was wondering. great tone at low levels so the missis don't get lemon
Holy shit. It sounds freaking amazing.
lol The binocular view when The Captain is looking at the amp dials. *thumbs up*
250 pounds wtf that's some economic wizardry
only 165 in the US :)
Nah It's $329 US for the one they are using here.
How the hell do you know? You're talking out your ass.
Exactly, who fn cares. As long as it works. Do you all realize that Japanese cars are made in the U.S., U.S. cars are made there, we out source to India for tech. jobs. they come here to work, etc etc etc. It's called global economy. Just the way it is anymore .
you're right, I thought this demo was for the KT-50
Just picked one up. It's loud alright. Pretty well balanced tonally & it's tone cuts through the speakers at any volume. Not as forward & metallic on the gain, as the valve combos at $300-$400. It's pretty good though.
As someone taking guitar as my second instrument, who was finicky about tone & knew nothing & quit on unbearably shitty & broken gear as a teen, this thing is amazing for what I need right now. Thank you Roland/Boss. I can finally venture beyond scales without puking over my 5chords.
could you do a comparison/shootout vid of the lower range amps, that came out lately?
I picked up the Katana 50 last week. I'm super happy with it. Boss tone studio is pretty cool, it even let's you mix up the chain on the pedals. Good one Boss, and another great video boys.
I believe they call it the Katana because its tone cuts through the mix.
You guys are great with amp views and guitar pedals ....you make me want to come to Britain and meet you guys at Anderson’s
im sorry man.. i just cant watch a whole video of yours... everytime i hear you play i just need to stop the video and play guitar. your playing is so inspiring!
Literally went out and bought this amp today because of this video. No regrets. Been looking for something smaller and more portable compared to the Marshall half stack I have and this amp is great so far! haven't put my guitar down all night. Also the fact that there is a standby setting on a solid state amp is great. Idk why other companies haven't caught onto that yet or in the past.
having bought a £1000+ Kemper, Chappers realised what he wanted all along was a Boss Katana
Luke Moll it's funny, a buddy of mine who happens to own a Kenper told me he wants to profile it after hearing it play for like 2 minutes :p
Hey guys .... I now own one but you did’nt mention that one of the coolest things about these amps is that you can listen to it with ur head phones and even plug in a Backing Track using the aux input. Awesome !!
What a great tele, man. You're so lucky Pete!
i "ve got my BOSS KATANA YESTERDAY AND I'M LOVING THIS BLACK SAMURAI !!!!!
Got this as a home practice amp figuring it had the effects as a reference. I now use it as my pedal platform, and it works spectacularly for that.
Since ditching the dreads poor Rob seems to have a terminal case of "bed head".
What's that?
waking up and going to work without brushing your hair
+bclmax Thanx !!!
jjajaj
not to offend but he kinda looks a bit like heinrich Himmler plus a few stone, especially on the profile...
I just got this amp for my electric and I’m in love with it, it offers so much and it’s a fantastic beginner amp
Next video. This amp, assigned Boss MT-1's to all banks. Turn 'em all on, scoop those mids, crank the gain, and metal out.
I have the Katana 50W. I really just can't say enough good things about the amp. It's super solid for the price range.
i was in the local music shop here this past weekend and heard one of these. Was very shocked at the tone that it was getting. I thought it was a Blackstar at first. Im more of a fender guy in and out for everyday stuff i do. But these have a nice tone that i really liked.
How was the bass response?
Value for money meter is off the scale with this amp. Ive had all sorts of amps over the years, even went ampless at one point with a POD x3 and a PA. This amp is on my Xmas list for sure
Amp is perfection all the way down to its price!
"it's funny when things are simple and we look for the complex route because we're used to that"
true. this is what they mean when they say guitar is life
I cant stop laughing at the "Captain POV Cam"!!! Brilliant!!
I like it when Rob says "Maaaan...that sounds GRITE!"
So, Rob... between the Boss Katana and the Blackstar ID Core series, which one do you prefer?
Best digital amp ive heard yet ive never ever been interested in a digital amp now that one I wouldnt mind having
Michael Ward - only the effects are digital. The rest is analog
Not bad but I feel that that the Yamaha THR series is still the best practice amp out there. The distortion on those things just feels right. Why do most digital amps fail at getting good high gain sounds?
My Blackstar ID:60 is pretty authentic when it comes to distortion.
+Seamus McFlanery
You really think?
I once got to try the 'X' version and it was kinda disappointing,
especially after all the praise I read about these things.
They are seriously bloody bang on, hey?
DerEchteBold Yeah I sold the X version but I still have the normal one and it sounds great. The key is plugging it into a computer and using the software to fine tune the fizz out of the distortion channels. I tried that with the X and where the yellow one had good base channels, the X did not. The Dimebag channel sounded like ass and the two Powerball channels were just meh. The Brown tone channels were great though.

We had it hooked up to the owners laptop and I tried to fiddle with the settings, without much satisfying result, the effects are quite good but the sounds do not have any amp-like quality, although many reviews claimed they had.
Captains old school.
"You got your iPad apps, and you can, do all sorts of jiggey pokery with that.."
Captain's face at 8:05, in reaction to Rob's tapping lick
Taken a couple of years but I've finally ordered one !
I tried a boss katana 50 and just returned my line 6 spider V 30 and am ordering a boss katana 50
I have the exact spider V30 and I want to get a boss katana. Seems like a way better bang for my buck.
Yamaha did DG range of amplifiers in late 90, which were like first modelling amps, and still it is just wonderfull, best you can have, and motorised pots were icing of the cake.
I ordered a dg1000 combo from ebay in like 99, it came witha blown pre amp. Ended up using the power amp and speakers anyway
I just got the Katana 100, Love it. I also just love the sound and style of that guitar. Is that a Chappers custom? How can I get one?
this is the perfect amp for a schools music department. reliable and versatile.
Any chance you could make a video about the editing via USB? I can't find a single video of that aspect of these amps!
yes im looking for that also
I would also like to see how easy or hard it will be to load new pedals into this amp. A fuzz with an overdrive pedal would be great to see if this new amp can sound good with them.
TheAbsorbant
it doesnt work.
Shameless message incoming: I made a big old video on it!
***** Thanks!
Best video ever guys ! And it just happens to be about an amp I am 95% certain of owning .
I think it's about time for another practice/home amp shootout. The Katana Code and IdCore
Or the equivalent Blackstar ID?
...Line 6 Spider V, Marshall CODE, VOX AV or VTX, Peavey Vypyr 3
Let's see a shootout!
Thanks for the info Richard, I will definitely try it out...
+Richard Clark What metal distortion pedal do you use with your Boss Katana?
The playing was even better than usual
Chappers has the Roy Buchanan "cocain-jaw" when he shreds.
I have a fender machete head, and now I really want one of the heads since you mentioned the "practice speaker". Plus a solid solid state, with an fx loop built in that I trust (i mean, they make the pedals), means I can leave my fx loop on my main, and use this as a practice level amp. With a fender machete and a boss katana I'd totally cut through
Ok I love this one!!! Great demo guys!!! I've got to get this amp. Simple as that!
I just bought one! Very very happy.
Is it me or does The Captain look like the singer of Muse
Boigames thom yorke?
@@jaker8165 matt bellamy
It's you.
I have pre-ordered a Boss mini katana amp! I can't wait to get it!
