This is obviously an amp for a guy who wants to treat themselves.
I mean, there's a market for this, in Australia this thing is still about half the price of a Boogie Mark amp, they're like, $4500 new here.
If you have an issue with this amp, kind of means you have to have an issue with pretty much all boutique amps, that's what this amp is, it's Fender's entry into the boutique market. It's not just a Hot Rod Deluxe with a different cover, it's designed to be the last amp you have to buy.
Find a used Peavey Ultra Plus. Can be found between 200-600 bucks used. Insane gain, can also do good bluesy crunch, clean is a touch flat but takes pedals well.
I own every amp there is - Mesa, Marshall, EVH - this is my favorite amp
got a fryette?
Dude... This amp has so much more then your average run of the mill Fender amp!!! Speaker damping, notch filters, and midi control alone are very high end!!! Show me any of that on any Fender tube amps (ESPECIALLY the midi) !!!
BTW, I have not seen these anywhere. Fender is going for a limited number of these amps for a specific market? Those that are willing to buy can afford them. From only these clips, I do like the clean sound it produces. It seems more progressive. I love how versatile it seems to be. If you do not like the digital reverb on this, a simple solution is getting a reverb pedal? So annoying to see people that judge before trying. -It is called prejudging/prejudice?
I own the head and 1X12 cabinet and it sounds a hundred times better. Don't screw yourself by passing one up based on this surreal review...
What would you recommend over this amp in all tube ,a little cheaper thanks and good review. You guys do the best reviews ,thank u
"...better speakers and better components." They do do that, it usually cost a pretty penny to upgrade the speakers on certain models. As for colors, why do you need anything but Black or Tweed? They tried and failed with the Red Frontman's, they really didn't sell that well.
I'm kind of interested in what mods you've made to your Frontman. I've got an FM212R I bought used for $150, upgraded the speakers, for now I'm good with the reverb, but just wondering what else could be done to it.
Now selling for $1149 Aug 2013.
That's a darn good price for a new very high end high quality amp.
You can get a lower priced amp that is not as versatile and then you'll need another $250-$300 for a really good tube distortion/gain pedal. So an amp for say $650 then add $250 that's $900, and you have to plug this and that in along with a power adapter for the pedal. For $250 more you can have all that plus much more tonal capability along with 5yr warranty. Not bad if you like it's tone.
Just bought one for $499.00, blowout sale, and Yes the original price of $1899.00 turned me off, but $500, not so much. Very loud, and believe it or not the eq's are VERY sensitive. Clean and heavy and all points in between. Awesome value. good job fender!!!
Vaughan Carter Long and McQuade..I thought it said $1499.00 and had to do a double take when I saw that it WAS $499.00. Now, it was purchased and returned, the guy owned it for 2 weeks. Since I know the guys their so well i inquired because it didn't sound right. the L&M guy told me that the amp had been sitting there for a year with absolutely no interest, this guy purchased and didn't really know how to handle it (much like Mark V's). I think you'll be hard pressed to find the amp even close to this price(unless you find a desperate on ebay, kijiji etc). I lucked out.
Yep its a lot of caxh just for valves. I've been playing semi-professionally for 30 years and ALWAYS used valve amps. Bought a $500 Mustang III and havent looked back. Had it a month and sold my Rivera!! I have patches setup for my Strat, Tele and Les Paul. No hasty amp adjustments when changing guitars! Would I by an expensive valve amp again? Maybe but it would have to be pretty special. Maybe an Ulbrick, handmade and about the same price as the Machete????
the strat sounded awesome, but i wonder what a vintage single coil would sound like through there with less gain on the PU end. also, im not a big fan LP fan, but that particular one sounds amazing BTW
@0Heavy0Metal0 I'm glad you're able to write so much :-) Glad you've learned your lessons! Mam can be proud!
This is Fender finally getting the message and getting involved in the new century. This amp is a welcome addition to the rock/metal scene. The recent (III) series upgrades are much overdo as well. The Blackstar HT series is crap! That is gimmicky. High gain and a sterile clean channel. The tweekabiltiy for the "American" & "British" is not that impressive. I have played and owned them. This Machete amp is the real deal. I would buy this in a heartbeat.
This amp does everything you could ever ask from any amp. The settings are extremely sensitive and the sound is very warm yet tight you obviously haven't tried it out personally.
The 50 watt head is on ebay for $1099, the 50 watt evh is $999.
Six tubes in this preamp section alone. The same price range as the Blackstar series one 50. all terrific amps, but suited for different needs. It suks, but unless you can stand digital, they gouge you. At least the Machete has a great eq section..
Well I was wondering does Fender still use the eminence speaker in the Machete amps or is it a totally different custom speaker ? I also thank Fender for sticking to their guns, I guess trying to compete with foreign markets is a big challenge for a long time US comp. But you guy's nailed it on this one and maybe down the road you can figure out how to make a cheeper package for the shallow pockets without sacrificing components ! Cheer's!
The Fender Machete is discontinued :(
Guitar Whores Yes they are but if your lucky enough you might find a used one some where I've got a feeling they might bring them back just never Know Will see what Fender Nam brings in 2015 this year which may have been the end of this month in cal.
Guitarman3348 I got me one. My main gigging amp. So much fun.
sAW THthing demoed at NAMM this year. The notch control is awesome & i love the digital reverb for more control. ONLy thig is.. i like combo amps FOR their open back.
I'd LOVE it if Fender made a cheaper, head version of this. A metalhead's dream.
Did I hear a little old school Faith No More? Sweet!!
What kind of pickups do you have in your main guitar? Why do you need 4 channels?
Where Fender is concerned Leo has been gone since the 60's.
I would also like to add that Fender has lots of 'working guy' stuff...shooting at the high ticket market is absolutely fine.
It looks like Fender made this amp to focus a lot more on the overdrive. I think the overdrive sounds better on this amp, I own the Hot Rod Deluxe and I prefer the overdrive I get from my Plimsoul. The Machete seems okay, but get rid of the digital reverb.
The problem is, I don't really like the tonal quality of this amp. It's go a lot of tone shaping features, but it's base tone is kinda flat. It's clean is not as good as classic Fender tube designs. The clean is clean but almost sterile, like a solid state amp that adds no character. Seems to be missing those sweet tube overtones and coloration that so many of us players love.
It's not supposed to play back MP3's cleaning, it's supposed to create a cool tube colored tone.
Please, could anybody tell me the name of the song @8:29? It sounds familiar but I just can't remember which one. Nirvana? Thanks!
One of my favourite riffs here the second..) Alice In Chains forever.
So we see clean set to "gain = 10:00" & "volume = 3:00". Does it stay clean at 12:00? 1:00? 2:00? Where does it start sounding pushed & get into overdriving in the clean channel?
whisperthis around 11:00, it gets a pushed sound, but you have alot of clean volume with the gain set under 11:00.
Fine review, but Premier Guitar needs to get its Metal on. I've seen people talk about Too much gain, and granted, Metal players get a sound that isn't necessarily full gain, but would go past eleven on the gain of this amp. The demo stays in hard rock territory. So what's with, "11 being "more gain than anyone will ever need." I wonder why people who are reviewing amps seem to think that Fender, their engineers, designers, and marketers had no idea what they were going for. I think not.
Now I'm curious what it sounds like with the gain full blast...
Fender supersonic is just as good, for a much lower price, but i'm liking the extra versatility here, especially since fenders are normally "simple" amps.
Not even comparable - got both.
Looks BAD ASS!! Im liking the grey stripe. But $2600 for a 2 channel amp.. I can get a ROAD KING by Mesa for that money and get 4 channels.
I have a mesa and i think this sounds better and is much more versatile. These things will go way down in price in the used market. I got one that was barely used for $1300. The equivalent Dr. Z amp is good but a one trick pony. Check out some of the other review - especially from Anderton's music in the UK to see how good this thing can sound.
I just want an amp that can sound like the one used for the intro music of each PG video.
Overall, I really like this amp. I was fully jumped onto the Egnater wagon til I saw the videos on this. But the price? Really? 2k for a 1x12 combo? Thats just out of line. Yeah, I know it has a lot of bells and whistles that Fender doesn't normally include, but jeezus cracker thats a lot of cash for a 1 x 12 combo.
Sounds great though... so this is the amp to watch for used.
@onetwomeansnothing because no one else makes dual channel clean/high-gain 6L6 112 combos lol
@onetwomeansnothing I think they are made in the California factory, but I'd rather buy a bogner or something for gain in that price range. Crazy
Good sounding 70s bowling bag
Wheres andy?! -_-
price ?
Why not get a Mesa Single Rectifier for way, way less? Hell, for that kind of cash you get get a Road King or an RA-100. $2600 is damn-near Fuchs or Bogner money!
@ThePyroslicer fair point :D
dear lord will everyone stop bitching about the price. It's $1200 for the combo.
Without having played it, how would you know?
The video's I've seen/heard are not that impressive.
But I'm hoping to play one in person so that I can get a true sense of what this amp can do.
I agree this whole "American vs British" BS is a lot of BS.
It comes to using EL type tubes or 6L6/6V6 tubes.
Egnater amps with both show that it's not a tremendous difference, yet there is one, just not real big. The greater difference is the guitar and the EQ.
You can eq a 6L6 amp to sound "British".
This argument doesn't make sense, Fender still has all of the products they've always made, now they just have one higher gain amplifier that costs $1800 with features you may not want. Let the people who are interested buy this, and you can stick to your hotrod. We all win.
what song @ 6:30?
You can get it for $250 less without the racing stripe. Just kidding, but why not? Knobs are hard to read - a feature that is always high on the stupid meter. Good point made at 5:03. A lot of amp designers are not musicians, or they are marketing people who are more concerned with getting the amp out the door than with what it sounds like.
I wouldn't oppose to a great high gain fender amp (and there have been in the past) but 50 watt, made in mexico probably and mediocre sound is a bit ...off. I mean fender allready has the similar supersonic 100 watt. It doesn't say made in USA anywhere.
Why didn't you dime out the overdrive to show if i really can do everything?
Just get a Deville with a good od or distortion pedal and you set for half the price.
Why is this guy playing only classic rock riffs on what is clearly a metal amp? No wonder he is not taking the gain above 11:00. SHow us what hte beast can do if you play metal on it.
Well guys, look at freaking Boutique amplfiers. one channel 1x12 amp like 20 watts for probably 3000 dollars? people still buy that stuff...
This along with the new Clampton amps are ridiculously priced. The guys at Fender must be smoking some potent shit. I'd rather buy a Dr Z for that kind of money.
The Mustang uses solid state power because it's playing back digitally sampled tones. So, you're playing software that then alters, changes, colors, etc...your guitars output. Solid state modeling amps aren't creating a tone, they are mimicking tones of sampled TUBE amplifiers, to try and recreate a tone.
Just go and get a tube amp that your modeling map is trying to pretend to be and then you'll hear what modeling amps are trying to reproduce.
Real cheese or processed "cheese food", eat real
@onetwomeansnothing
Because it is good
Fender is owned by Weston Presidio and is currently saddled with $246 million dollars in debt. They are doing anything they can to capitalize on their fame and jack up prices. My suggestion is to buy independently built amplifiers, or vintage used. Anything released by Fender in the next few years will be low quality and priced at the top of the market.
It's not $1900, it's $1200
feels like it's not a Fender amp... Looks crappy, sounds crappy. Jordan Wagner's job is done excellent IMHO
$2,500 is way too much for and amp. It sounds good but they aren't going to sell many of thiese at that price. And who would want it with just one speaker built in?
@okamasphere
It's pronounced "NOE WON FU KING CAY ERS"
Nice video \m/
Not really impressed with this amp. All Fender Tubes that have Reverb should be spring. If I want a dual channel amp with modeled reverb I'll play a significantly less expensive fender solid state amp. The Gain sounds too Marshall like for my taste and the playing reminds me of watching kids play in High School
Jerkwilkesbooth I played today was really nice to my ears
$1900 street price for a very average hi gain amp?? buy an engl or a real marshall and be happier for that money. this might be cool at $700.
@MyLifeChanger Awesome, you're great. That's super duper man, pat yourself on the back.
@6:40 ...Diary of a Madman?
WHY the F wouldn't you show us what it is like with the gain past 10 O'CLOCK?????????
Way overpriced .I picked up a 50 WATT Peavey classic 50 ,all tube combo ,in yellow tweed for $300.00 For a couple hundred more you can buy a vintage Fender Bassman
but they are paying for tone and reliability. frankly, this is a meh sounding 2 channel high gain amp. if i had this kinda money laying around, id buy a mesa, which delivers far superior tone and flexibility for the price.
@onetwomeansnothing Brand name
$1900**
@onetwomeansnothing Because Fender is about to go public, needs to pay off debts from shitty management, and therefore needs to fleece its customers as much as possible. Fuck this. Axe FX revolution all the way!
@dixiedevil1369 Dr Z, nuff said
Combo.....32 Kilos?
Got really bored by the riffs he played when on channel 2. You say this amp has huge amounts of gain? Please demonstrate. At about 8:28 I thought the tone from the LP was pretty damn crap. Not worth the money.
STOP PLAYING THAT RIFF
for $2600 might as well buy a marshall
It sure sounds fugly with the Strat.....
@onetwomeansnothing All you're paying for is the name.
Its pronounced MA CHETT EH. Not Maushite
This box is going to be Fender's new "Metalhead," which essentially means nobody is going to buy it because it's woefully overpriced, just like the Princeton Recording and a half dozen other Fender amps released over the past several years. Whoever is running the company's amp department should be fired for telling the shareholders "oh yeah, next up, we're going to debut a $2,000 high gain FENDER! No really, we are. We'll put fear in all those Bogner and Marshall owners." bwhahahahahaha
It ain't like that by Alice in chains.
Sounds good; but not even close to 2000 dollars' worth of good.
$1900 for a 1X12 combo?! .......................did fender bump there head on something? you could get a 2X12 boutiqe amp for that and voiced any way you wanted.
i dont know whats up with all these so called "name brand" companys but someone needs to inform them where not idiots.......................none the less its a great amp just not $1900 great......., oh and you can never have to much gain....................ever...............
My Mustang IV sounds just as good lots cheaper and does so much more, don't give me the valve versus solid state,if your playing is crap you are gonna sound crap thru anything.SAVE MONEY Mustang IV
fender ....... what the fuck happened !?!
Far too expensive...
FUCK! Now the clean sounds like shit, what the fuck!
for that price?? really??? nobody will buy it....
haha people are being critical of something they hear through thier shitty little computer speakers? ha wtf? Has anyone here talking about the good ole fucking days even played through this thing? I talked to someone selling these out of a warehouse outlet that sounded sincere when he said he sold a few without any returns. He also said he could sell me one for $1750. Do people like to criticize to sound high and mighty? ha. come back when you actually played through this. Ty
Sounds great. Terrible looking amp
sounds horrible...
far too much talking... christ, 5 minutes?!
One ugly amp.
