McFro95 Definitely do. Will bring your confidence up and make it possible to feel less inhibited playing new, difficult guitars. I recommend doing solos on an acoustic guitar to like Jimi Hendrix and stuff and switching to an electric for about 40 minutes and 10 minutes respectively, and you can take on anything when you get there.

i honestly really hate going to guitar shops, guitar center isnt as bad because its large enough to run away from the sales people and theres plenty of other people who also dont know what theyre doing but I cant handle small times shops. Theres a few local shops ive gone to to buy picks or maybe just shop around and salivate at the stuff I cant afford and they always seem like they give off this kind of "youre not worthy" vibe since Im pretty clearly new to the whole venture. one guy at a shop basically tried to force me to play some strat he had and after repeatedly telling him no and him not listening i finally just told him im new to the whole thing and i dont really know what im doing and he looked at me like I told him i have cancer or something. So basically until i get better im sticking to big name stores and online unfortunately.

awh man I understand this so much. I had a similar experience. I was so put off buying my first guitar. I was lucky enough to find a vintage fender copy from a family friend that was perfect for me. And it fit the bill for a starting point. I picked it out from a few dozen shown. And still have it now I m 24. That was probably 10 years ago. And the Guitar was made in the early 80's haha. I wish you and anyone else luck in buying your first guitar. It doesn't have to be the newest or most expensive. Just a starting point to learn on.

While it is important to check all of these things, I believe that the only make or break attribute for buying a guitar is how it plays. Don't sacrifice playability for knobs, tuners, or even sound. These things can be changed later. I bought a gibson les paul classic a few years ago and hated the sound. Bit it felt absolutely perfect. New pickups and pots and now it's my favorite sounding guitar. Haven't touched the setup since buying it and it is the best playing guitar I've ever played.

8:08 - totally agree with this. My parents got me my first guitar a few years ago. It was about $50-$75, and it just didn't feel right (ripoff of a Stratocaster). A friend of mine sold me his Epiphone Les Paul Special (Black), and I feel a lot more excited when playing the guitar now. I actually look forward to playing it whenever I know some free time is coming up. Never had that feeling with the cheapo.

    Hey Rob!
Really appreciated the tips you gave in how to buy a guitar, so why not make a video on your process for selling one? You could cover selling online, in a guitar store, how to know if you're getting a good deal, etc.
Personally I'm always a nervous wreck when selling my axes because I never know if I should be asking more questions or going some place else.

  • @cmkilcullen8176

Thank you for validating some things for me here.
1- I too found, as a beginner, that getting an instrument that is a quality instrument helps a great deal with respect to the feel, sound and looks. My journey has taken a lot of twists and turns here. On one hand - sales people can be quite helpful, but often times there is a lot of double talk. In a phrase they engage you with an aire of "we are invested in you being happy". On the other - telling them you are beginner is the kiss of death because they discredit you when you are NOT happy because you here buzzing or something of that sort. They gas light you and tell you the buzzing in so many ways is not that serious or something or other. Bottom line - it does not make me happy, so let's move on because I am not interested in either the inferior set up that you are now going to make me pay for (which I should not have to do if I am buying a new guitar from you) or because the guitar is just not a good one. Even though I am a beginner I have dealt with other guitars that do not buzz - so it is not "my approach to the guitar". (Yes I have been given that b.s.).
2- Getting a quality instrument allows you the resale thing so that you can recoup some of your funds.
3- The intimidation issue was helpful. I am a beginner but I am not 15 - so one must keep in mind that you are still a consumer. Make the store stay true to being invested in you happiness. Just because you are a beginner, it does not mean you are an idiot. I have been doing what I am doing longer, in some cases, longer than some of these folks have been playing or selling. If you don't like it , you don't like it. If your reasons are purely subjective - that's cool too because getting a guitar is extremely personal even if you are a beginner. You may change your mind as you go along with what you like as you get more experience, and that it merely a part of the process. If the store you are dealing with only understands that in word and not in behavior - pay attention to the behavior and deal with someone with patience (rather them making you feel like a jack ass).
    Thanks-
    CMK

"how to buy an amp" is pretty much the same thing, take your guitar to a music store, choose your kind of amp (effects/oldschool/modeling/etc.) and play it. if you like it, try ALL the other ones of your category before you buy one, there`s always a better amp, sitting in the corner and collecting dust.

Great advice about getting the right amp. I started playing when at 16 got an amp bought for me by my folks a Fender Squire 15W. I knew nothing about guitars and amps I was a complete beginner. The tone of the amp was all wrong for me. I tried numerous pedals thinking that would work. 24 years a couple of amps, guitar and a lot of common sense later I know better. Got a great amp for £55 off ebay a Marshall 5010. I took a chance and it worked a treat for me. Tone is personal remember that!

Rob Chapman When checking the neck relief around 10:30 you can use the elbow of your right hand as well to press the strings past the neck. That comes in handy when checking the relief on a extended scale guitars or basses.

Why the fuck do people recommend some cheap piece of shit guitar. Just because I'm a beginner doesn't mean I'm broke. And If I don't like it I will sell it or hey if I'm feeling extra generous I will donate. If you're going to help give advice on what guitar someone should get at least ask what their budget is first and go from there... OR give them an option from expensive to cheap good guitars, and let them decide.

One thing that people really don't take in consideration when buying a guitar is the type of neck it has and the other bands that are out their besides gibson and fender. Comfort and playability is one of the most important things to look for in a guitar besides tone. Even if a guitar is lower end and say 100 dollars less than another guitar you want, don't pick the one thats more expensive and less comfortable go with one that you find to play easier on.
Lots of people also don't understand that some guitar necks are drastically different than one another, ex an ibanez/music man/ jackson is going to have a thinner flatter faster neck then when compared to the more rounded a tele or a less paul or early model schecter.

Best thing to do is to think about the music, and particularly the guitarists, that you really dig. Check out what guitars they use. And then go to a music shop and try those axes out to hear which one really "speaks" to you! All of the guitars you mentioned are great choices...

I agree that you should not buy too cheap, started with a cheap novice kitt who never sounded good or fun, which meant that I efter a while I forced myself to play, even though the glow whas gone, but would love to learn how to play. Now 8 years later I decided to try again, a god second hand amp and a better guitar, and now i practice practically every day because it's fun, and I finally starting to get the hang of it.

The people at guitar center lowered the action on my Les Paul studio deluxe so much that the strings vibrated off of the pickups. The buzzing was so bad it was unplayable until I raised the action back up a quarter inch. Plays great now, though. They lower the action because it makes it easier to play. My recommendation: get used a high action and beware of people offering to lower it. If you want easy bends and you play with a light touch, get lighter gauge strings, don't lower the action.

  • @robertobrien2903
    @robertobrien2903 6 років тому

I always play on the same amp I own or what's closest when I try stuff out. Oddly enough, I do actually ask the shred guy at the store to play one I think I'm going to get after I play it, tell him what I've noticed and start whittling away at the price. This helps me listen for weird things in the sound that occur even if a good player plays it. It's good when someone with good technique plays it and if they work there you know they want a sale. This can turn the sales guy into your advocate when they take your stance on a setup issue and then you say "At that special price you mentioned with the case, if that setup was right and it had these strings on it I'd buy it" and then he's talking to the main manager, grabbing strings and telling the tech to straighten out an issue free for you that they may try to charge for otherwise. Try it, it works for me, even at Guitar Center. P.S. Chappers, I'm glad you're not a sales guy at Anderton's and please Don't tell the Captain my tactics because I'm going to buy a bass or guitar at Anderton's some day and use this technique to make out like a bandit in a gentlemanly manner!!!!!!!!!

One thing you have to know as a beginner buying your first guitar is that music store employees are salesmen first, guitar players second. My point being is they'll move you towards something that they have to "move" such as overstock inventory. Chances are if there is a lot of something... There is a reason it's not selling.

If you encounter a bit of difficulty playing “Howling Wolf’s” (Killing Floor) fear not, the same thing happened to Eric (God) Clapton when Jimi Hendrix came calling in 1966 during a London jam session.
Clapton & Cream were rehearsing. Hendrix had been in the UK about a week, during his first trip to London in 1966, he went to a gig where Clapton was playing, and asked if he might jam with Clapton…
Although Clapton liked the song (Killing Floor) he considered it too hard to play… when Hendrix launched into playing the guitar behind his head, between his legs, with is teeth and doing “dive bombs” Clapton was visibly shaken, to the point where he retired to the basement washroom, and struggling to light a cigarette…most people in music, or at least those surrounding Clapton at the time were in a state of disbelief and shock at the time…Descriptions of Hendrix’s playing went far beyond that of just another great guitar player, or an extraordinary guitarist, Hendrix was tagged as a force of nature!

My first guitar was a Vintage SG, and for £180 I can say that the quality is amazing. Now, i've only played for around 8 months or so, but playing on this guitar is fun. Tryin to learn on my crappy £50 guitar several years ago was hell. I know exactly where you're coming from around 8:10.
