Ash Crawford leads us through a 4 minute HIIT workout. This is a TRUE TABATA, meaning you can use 100% effort for the entirety of the workout (or for as long as you can!). Workouts like this will help rev your metabolism, increase your VO2 Max and muscular endurance while also training your aerobic and anaerobic capacity.

The Workout:
Perform each of the following exercises for 20 seconds at a time, followed by 10 seconds rest. Repeat for as many rounds as you can!

What is the Tabata Protocol? 20 Seconds of sprint/work, 10 second rest, for 4 straight minutes. Tabata music lets you focus on your workout, rather than think about having to look at your watch or a timer.
Tabata Training began in the mid 1990's. Japanese fitness researcher Dr Izumi Tabata created a HIIT (high intensity interval training) workout, using this very method. Dr Tabata proved the tabata method to draw heavily from both the aerobic and anaerobic systems, unlike most conventional workouts, which tend heavily favor one or the other.
The Tabata Interval has gained a lot of recognition throughout the Crossfit community, running community, and health clubs across the globe, for its versatility, adaptability, and positive results.
The Tabata Interval Method has proven to maximize VO2 max, while also building endurance, burning fat, and retaining muscle. Though the Tabata was not designed as a fat loss or weight loss program, the protocol has gained a lot of attention due to its ability to help do so.
One of the few true HIIT workouts. Most other videos barely even qualify as moderate intensity. That being said people ALSO need a lot of moderate Zone 2 to make the heart and cardiovascular system most conditioned. HIIT is icing on the cake but will only quickly plateau if done without Zone 2.

98% of people cannot do true Tabata. Those who are able to, only do it twice a week, as it will leave you completely exhausted the next day.

Finally, an actual 'high intensity' workout. People just call anuthing as hiit. The best way to see was that you were totally gasping for air. That is the super indication of your workout being high intensity.

Yeah the rest was manageable but im gonna have to get used to these 😂
you don't need to do lunge jumps. any exercise that lets you work at max effort is good. ie, not dumbbell squats or pushups. I do highjump burpees w/pushup at bottom, kick throughs, mountain climbers, crab kicks. i aim for max reps with each. breathe and hydrate during 10 sec rest periods.

I think its best to do some weight lifting, maybe whole body compound exercise 3x a week (i do calisthenics), some walking outside everyday, and then some kind of hiit anywhere from 3x a week to everyday. If you do all 3 then you don't need to do hiit more than once a day, and doing more than once a day might make your strength workouts less effective

Tabata was invented by isuku Tabata in japan for professional athletes. It involves putting out maximum effort for the 20 sec segments and resting during the 10 sec segments. This is repeated 8 times.
98% of people cannot do proper Tabata. The professional athletes only do it twice a week. After doing Tabata, you will be completely exhausted the next day.
Studies have shown that cardio exercises have no effect on muscles gain from weightlifting

As you found out already, doing Tabata leaves you exhausted. If you lack endurance, it won't give you endurance. You have to develop it from other forms of cardio.
Tabata was invented in the 90s in japan by isuku Tabata for professional athletes. Part of his study was to examine if exerting maximum effort would increase an athlete's VO2max intake. Yes it does.
98% percent of people cannot do Tabata as it was designed. The athletes only do it twice a week.
You need to work your way up to a certain level before you can do true Tabata. From there you can easily increase your endurance by doing Tabata.
so is one set of this 4-min exercise enough? is it just a guide or should it be repeated a number of times?
Repeating it for 5 times makes a great 20 min workout

If you go all out on each exercise, there’s no way you do this for 20 mins. Emphasis on “all out”. After 5 mins, your power output will be lower and you will turn this exercise to a cardio (fat burning) if you keep doing it, which defeats the purpose of HIIT training.
Fun fact. This is mainly cardio anyways. Even if you just do it for 5 minutes.
