I love the hobby but I'm not crying for them. Topps doesn't care about value. They never have. And if they could get away with it, they would turn your kids into gambling addicts. Unlike investing in a company who if they issue more stock your shares dilution is offset by the fact that the company now has more money card companies can issue more cards endlessly and your investment gets diluted and you own none of the revenue. It really is crazy 🤪
Wemby might be the first player to have 1000 1/1 cards across all products. What a milestone! Also I think that Fanatics is going to demolish the hobby in terms of new product - their bread and butter. The good part of that is that it may drive up the prices for pre-Fanatics cards as they will be scarcer and people fed up paying for overproduced overpriced junk wax may pivot to it. They need to get as many people addicted to breaking before the penny drops.

When Fanatics put all the biggest hits into breakers hands you’re not growing the hobby. Basically everyone that breaks is selling on eBay immediately to “make “ their money back. It’s not a hobby of collectors but more a hobby of profiting
I started collecting again about 3 years ago and I NEVER, not once bought a box or packs of baseball cards. Never got into breaks. Its gambling. I only buy singles of players I want and I would say 60-70% of the cards I have bought have actually gone up in value. Dont buy boxes people. Buy the card.
Congrats on some of your stuff going up. But you said you've jumped in basically at the height of the boom. The people who got in during covid really cant fathom how low card values can go. Yall dont have a baseline for what the bottom can be in this hobby. I just dont want you to get the impression that the last 4 years is typical in this hobby....its not. I've collected 30 years nonstop. I've seen 2 booms in that period, the late 90s/early 00s boom and the current covid boom.......with 20 stagnant years in between them, and cards selling for pennies on the dollar to what they sell for now.

Fanatics stole their business tactics from big tobacco. Start em' young, get em' hooked. Breaking needs to be regulated as gaming/gambling with licenses and regualted minimum payouts.
I have partaken in breaks and found it was a losing proposition and quit. I have watched four breaks over the last three days because I want to see the new product. All but one person (out of 120) lost money. Companies charge more, breakers charge more and buyers take the blunt of it, but nobody is forcing them to gamble.
What's even worse is the products are unlicensed so in a value sense they will end up being worth nothing. But tell that to those just "in it for the money".
Making cards is like making movies or writing books There few if any new ideas under the sun. Change players on cards, change authors of books or stars in movies.
Topps knew what they were doing with the ripps night, people also forget what topps is realeasing in 2024 is just showcasing what they will releasing next yesr when they have the license
Yeah, my first thought with Topps Mercury was 'oh, all the chrome Wembys are worthless now.' Not to mention Topps Chrome Sapphire dumping a bunch more better Wembys out there!
Between color variations and card variations autos Victor has over 1800 autos in unlicensed Topps Chrome.Not counting Bowman products. But last count over 6500 Victor Wembanyama autos produced. After the other products hit the number will skyrocket over 12,000 signed cards.
I have shared many times with my view on how Topps is going to market their cards and how they will make the current tier 1 cards into tier 1.5 or worse tier 2. I guess I see an even worse trend from Topps, they are not only harming Panini cards, they are basically hurting people whom go after their product. Like when you are holding the 1/1 (which we have 6 or 7) Wemby auto from 2023 Topps, you feel like you got something nice. But hold your beer, topps immediately make a 1/1 RPA from the debut or 1000 points jersey. (The logoman I suppose will left for later cards) If they can instantly killing off the market, imagine when they got the license. What will they do? Maybe redefining what a rookie patch auto to be. For instance, a RPA only means something when it is from the rookie year or a particular rookie match. Just if you think they cannot change that, look at the layman (comapring with Fanatics) reshaping which is the REAL MJ rookie card. What they need is just auction results, which let's be honest, let say they made 5 luka 1/1 TRUE topps RPA into the 10m range card at auction. It is just 50m advertisement for topps. (Just like 90s cards, people manipulate that, but it is 30k 50k and we seriously think Rubin and the friends cant do this?) But as I have said, I see no problem here, just it is like if you play apps game, you understand the rules, the current lottery character will be replaced by the next lottery character and so on and so forth. What is left is the question: How long can topps doing that without people feeling the product does not justify the price?

So basically those are lottery tickets to celebrate the moment. But let's be honest, not every moment are remembered equally in 20 years. (Like the Othani 40/40 will be forget with the 50/50 or 60/60 this year if it ever happens) But people will buy the lottery ticket because they feel like this is the best moment. (Like if you play an apps game or cards, the current good cannot compare with the good tomorrow) And the cost of joining the lottery is too low. (You buy lottery you either win lose, but here, even the raw cards you still have a second hand market) Then at the higher ends, because Rubin is not JUST a sports card company, he is big and well connected; he has the ability to make paradigm changing cards. For instance MLB there is a debut patch. Why can't he make every players at the last NBA Championship game wears a championship patch, (the last game determining who wins the championship) and put it on card, isnt it way more worthy than the patch we ever have? (I mean he is someone not just only can think big but practically can DO big.) So what is left is really, will people realise this? (Like tbh I feel like the Wemby RPA Murcury product is just ugly. They dont even give a period for the people whom get the 1/1 Topps Auto to have a moment) But even they feel so, in reality, the hype, the desire will always drive people to do stupid shit. Like people are dismayed by the game developers' ugly strategy, but when the developers' just give them a pack of candy, they forget everything.
I agree that it seems Mercury popped up out of the blue. Seems like a quick pivot from Topps Now branded sets dropped for Caitlin Clark and CJ Stroud. Kinda lame for collectors of those sets they will have Topps Now branding...then again could be another opportunity to print more autos from them and hit collectors wallets again. 😮
The new Mercury release raises another point for me, and that is card companies signing athletes to exclusive contracts not to sign for anyone else. I don't believe that's good for collectors. Let product design and quality determine market desirability rather than whether a particular player signs for that company exclusively
I love breaks! I DO breaks on whatnot, you ARE negative..BUT...you are right and needed, and opening packs or boxes IS gambling, in breaks or at home....but baiting kids and not being honest about facts of life (such as gambling) is wrong
I see what you're saying where this will lead to, Dan. It might split the hobby into the haves and have-nots, even more. When regular me cannot afford these inflated prices of short print white board (actually I can't believe I'm about to say this but Topps Chrome is actually more appealing--with color & quality.) and that's a stretch! But that is how blah this overpriced set is. This all lowers the players ceiling by putting a glamorous lure attached to a cheap fishing pole.
I pay zero attention to new cards, I just get videos on my feed because I love collecting. Gi Joe's, hot wheels, and vintage cards. Nothing I've seen currently has my attention. I love collecting, but none of this new 1of1 junk people spend too much on. I'm an 80s kid. Nowadays it's gambling with new cards. And if you collect action figures and such its all scalpers. It sucks.
It's a fine line of maintaining some level of scarcity while giving fans and collectors the access to cards they want to add to their collection. In my option if Wemby is willing to sign a ton, and Topps is willing to print a ton, I don't see anything wrong with getting a lot of his rookie autos out there so more people can enjoy and add it to their collection. Sure if there's a ton of supply, the value of each won't be as high if there were limited supply, wah wah. If it means early adopters got burned, so be it, that's the risk they take to be among the first to own. This is a hobby of collecting, not investing.
I agree, which is why I think it’s frustrating when they fill out the high end stuff the same way. We need to maintain scarcity with the cards that matter or else no one will care about them in the future (collectors will but I’m referring the all this new money adding all the liquidity into this industry)

They are the end consumer. Without collectors, flippers don't make money, "investors" don't get a store of value. It's all about the collector. Why can't there be several different sets, thereby more low numbered Wemby RPA's? Because the market value of each will be less in the future? So what? Topps and Panini should be in the business of giving fans and collectors more access to more interesting cards, period. Not thinking about how the market value of these cards will shape up 5, 10, or 20 years in the future. Cards maintaining a store of value should be a byproduct of creating interesting products that have demand, not the goal from the outset.

There’s plenty of hobby for more than one company producing cards. It’s not all about who has the license the big 3 should all have it and let the customer make the choice what they want to buy
I'm a Liverpool fan but the Chelsea jersey for this season that you're wearing is absolutely badass! I saw one at a card show in the summer and "almost" bought one. Even though there's no sponsorship on the front, the design & colors really look fantastic. Might be the best looking kit in the EPL this season 🤩⚽
I saw that video myself. He did indeed state he thought $8l was undervalued. And thought they would eventually resell for triple that or more on the secondary market. He pointed out the $8-12k some of the Flawless boxes sell for, and felt this product would be superior.

I know a lot of people will buy and hold these things at $8K. Feels like a huge risk…. Super tall ball players and longevity (I.e. lack of injury) don’t collide in the same sentence. Wish no ill will, but to me it’s a ticking time bomb so I will stay far far away…

Legitimate question: How would Wemby Mercury cards devalue other higher end SP's from other sets? I agreed with most of what you said on the other topics but this one felt like a reach. The market treats sets independently of one another. Luka Doncic's flawless RPA didn't devalue his NT RPA or any rare 1/1's or super high end cards. Something like Ohtanis Superfractor is still going to hold value even though Topps releases a $10,000 dollar Transcendent set with High end Patch Autos with Ohtani in it. Different sets have different pull rates of big hits and I'd like to think the market takes that into account. 2023 Griffey Autos were only a few hundred bucks but his Topps Chrome SP Auto that only comes out of breakers delight is thousands. Just the way it is.
My main thinking is that these now likely set a ceiling for the ones previously released. You had people run out and pay top dollar for them because they were all there was, or they were from a flagship brand. These cap their growth imo and will likely sell for a lot more purely based on the price of the box alone

This doesnt bother me at all. Happy to have very wealthy people lose 90% of the break value so I can buy great cards on the cheap. You have to remember someone has to pay for all the M&A from Fanatics. So we should expect higher peint runs pay for manufacturered rarities, etc....

It's just UD Master Collection and Kobe Eminence and nothing else. Fanatics just opened their live sports book in Atlantic City. People were looking to buy the credits on Facebook marketplace. Last year they did a pop up at a local cardshop with Brady, Kevin Hart and I think Meek Mill. I assume they gave the cards out at that shop and people are looking for them.

Then at the higher ends, because Rubin is not JUST a sports card company, he is big and well connected; he has the ability to make paradigm changing cards. For instance MLB there is a debut patch. Why can't he make every players at the last NBA Championship game wears a championship patch, (the last game determining who wins the championship) and put it on card, isnt it way more worthy than the patch we ever have? (I mean he is someone not just only can think big but practically can DO big.)
So what is left is really, will people realise this? (Like tbh I feel like the Wemby RPA Murcury product is just ugly. They dont even give a period for the people whom get the 1/1 Topps Auto to have a moment) But even they feel so, in reality, the hype, the desire will always drive people to do stupid shit. Like people are dismayed by the game developers' ugly strategy, but when the developers' just give them a pack of candy, they forget everything.

I agree that it seems Mercury popped up out of the blue. Seems like a quick pivot from Topps Now branded sets dropped for Caitlin Clark and CJ Stroud. Kinda lame for collectors of those sets they will have Topps Now branding...then again could be another opportunity to print more autos from them and hit collectors wallets again. 😮

The new Mercury release raises another point for me, and that is card companies signing athletes to exclusive contracts not to sign for anyone else.
I don't believe that's good for collectors. Let product design and quality determine market desirability rather than whether a particular player signs for that company exclusively

I pay zero attention to new cards, I just get videos on my feed because I love collecting. Gi Joe's, hot wheels, and vintage cards. Nothing I've seen currently has my attention. I love collecting, but none of this new 1of1 junk people spend too much on. I'm an 80s kid. Nowadays it's gambling with new cards. And if you collect action figures and such its all scalpers. It sucks.

It's a fine line of maintaining some level of scarcity while giving fans and collectors the access to cards they want to add to their collection. In my option if Wemby is willing to sign a ton, and Topps is willing to print a ton, I don't see anything wrong with getting a lot of his rookie autos out there so more people can enjoy and add it to their collection. Sure if there's a ton of supply, the value of each won't be as high if there were limited supply, wah wah. If it means early adopters got burned, so be it, that's the risk they take to be among the first to own. This is a hobby of collecting, not investing.
I agree, which is why I think it’s frustrating when they fill out the high end stuff the same way. We need to maintain scarcity with the cards that matter or else no one will care about them in the future (collectors will but I’m referring the all this new money adding all the liquidity into this industry)

They are the end consumer. Without collectors, flippers don't make money, "investors" don't get a store of value. It's all about the collector. This mindset is one that is turning this hobby into a cash grab casino trying to chase cards and no longer about collecting. Why can't there be several different sets, thereby more low numbered Wemby RPA's? Because the market value of each will be less in the future? So what? Topps and Panini should be in the business of giving fans and collectors more access to more interesting cards, period. Not thinking about how the market value of these cards will shape up 5, 10, or 20 years in the future. Cards maintaining a store of value should be a byproduct of creating interesting products that have demand, not the goal from the outset.
Fanatics and their constant money grab off of customer backs is disgusting. They will be the ones laughing when they ruin the hobby and run away with a bunch of money. There’s plenty of hobby for more than one company producing cards. It’s not all about who has the license the big 3 should all have it and let the customer make the choice what they want to buy
I'm a Liverpool fan but the Chelsea jersey for this season that you're wearing is absolutely badass! I saw one at a card show in the summer and "almost" bought one. Even though there's no sponsorship on the front, the design & colors really look fantastic. Might be the best looking kit in the EPL this season 🤩⚽

I saw that video myself. He did indeed state he thought $8l was undervalued. And thought they would eventually resell for triple that or more on the secondary market. He pointed out the $8-12k some of the Flawless boxes sell for, and felt this product would be superior.

Those you mentioned could be considered investing. Going into breaks or opening wax is not investing. It's gambling in the way of horse racing and slot machines - just with a way worse chance of winning anything. It's actually insane.
I know a lot of people will buy and hold these things at $8K. Feels like a huge risk…. Super tall ball players and longevity (I.e. lack of injury) don’t collide in the same sentence. Wish no ill will, but to me it’s a ticking time bomb so I will stay far far away…

Legitimate question: How would Wemby Mercury cards devalue other higher end SP's from other sets? I agreed with most of what you said on the other topics but this one felt like a reach. The market treats sets independently of one another. Luka Doncic's flawless RPA didn't devalue his NT RPA or any rare 1/1's or super high end cards. Something like Ohtanis Superfractor is still going to hold value even though Topps releases a $10,000 dollar Transcendent set with High end Patch Autos with Ohtani in it. Different sets have different pull rates of big hits and I'd like to think the market takes that into account. 2023 Griffey Autos were only a few hundred bucks but his Topps Chrome SP Auto that only comes out of breakers delight is thousands. Just the way it is.
My main thinking is that these now likely set a ceiling for the ones previously released. You had people run out and pay top dollar for them because they were all there was, or they were from a flagship brand. These cap their growth imo and will likely sell for a lot more purely based on the price of the box alone

Topps is destroying the hobby also with way over priced product.. Topps is making it really hard for people who can't afford to spend top dollar on product they are coming out with . I have been a collector since I was 8 years old I'm 45 now and it's just not as fun as it used to be and there weren't all kinds of different products back then like there is now.....

This doesnt bother me at all. Happy to have very wealthy people lose 90% of the break value so I can buy great cards on the cheap. You have to remember someone has to pay for all the M&A from Fanatics. So we should expect higher peint runs pay for manufacturered rarities, etc....

Fanatics just opened their live sports book in Atlantic City. People were looking to buy the credits on Facebook marketplace. Last year they did a pop up at a local cardshop with Brady, Kevin Hart and I think Meek Mill. I assume they gave the cards out at that shop and people are looking for them.
