Popovich purposely put him in uncomfortable positions/situations early in the season and Wemby struggled a bit. But those challenges also hastened his development and understanding of every position he can play. Since being moved to center, a position he initially does not see himself at..,Wemby has taken off and his efficiency also rose up. The scariest thing is that a generational talent is being mentored by a GOAT coach.

I think thats partly why Embiid is popping off right now. Being forced into uncomfortable situations is the easiest way to grow. Sink or swim mentality.
I definitely think the Sixers would have won the championship if Rivers wasn’t the coach but because Embiid was trapped in a system that forced him to iso on every play, his game evolve and then when Harden joined the team he was able to pickup more techniques to bait defenders into fouls, which is important because he is 300lbs, he needs more rest than every other NBA player and he gets that rest at the freethrow line. Also you can see a pretty good correlation between Embiid’s freethrow percentage and the number of freethrows he has attempted per game. Along with the fact that for many years Embiid had to shoot freethrows under the pressure of the fans chanting MVP during every freethrow.
This season Embiid has stopped trying to foul bait. He always tried to exaggerate contact/flop last season but under Nurse that has all mostly been eliminated from his game. Now Embiid finishes through contact and is going for the and1 instead if trying to force fouls. However even though he isn’t flopping the number of freethrows he gets per game has gone up. Why? Well NBA refs operate largely on the rule of cool, And1s are hype for viewers so they are more likely to call them versus when a player tries to force a foul with a shot attempt that has not chance of going in. Also, Embiid has become smarter about how he baits people into fouls. He has become more targeted about who he fouls, he tries to get the better players out of the game through foul trouble, and then naturally the bench players don’t have the discipline to not foul Embiid since they aren’t good enough to defend him.

The fact that people's expectations of him seemed almost unattainable, yet he's still managed to exceed those expectations is insane. I'm a very casual NBA fan, I don't watch a single game a year, just highlights and channels like Jimy's, yet Wemby has still managed to steal my attention and is making me want to start watching games. I hope he can fulfill his GOAT potential, and we're all lucky to be able to witness this man 's career from start to finish, live in front of us.

@@dark-lord-itachi-gojoofthe6166 Pop and their Front Office are tanking, losing on purpose.
Experimental line-ups and overly precautious with minute restrictions.
Obviously Pop knows better than pretty much anybody on the planet that playing a PF as a Point Guard is not how you win the next NBA game.
      He's not stupid.
He's just playing chess, when everybody else is playing checkers.
And he's a few moves ahead. It's not his first rodeo.
They took their time and tanked from the beginning so they could experiment, develop skills, lose games, and take the pressure away.
They first said they observed Victor, what he can do with and without instructions, to understand which pieces fit best around him: what does he need and how can they build the right team for him?
All that, while maximizing their draft odds this year.
      Complete win-win.
They weren't going to win a ring this year anyway, so regular-season wins are meaningless this season.
Pop and their FO know they can't win a ring with that roster.
They need more young talent to build their next dynasty around Victor, so losing this year is better for them and Wemby long-term.
Draft, trade, develop, for 2-3 years and they'll be great.
They don't want to be a win-now team to end up giving up all their cap space and draft assets for the wrong player in a rushed trade, to win now... And fail.
That's a risky way to end up being mid, like rookie Lebron Cavs or rookie Luka Mavs.
Plus, relying too much on older super expensive stars to win is not how you build a contending team for 15 years.
The core and talent need to be young. Surround them with vet leadership and experience in the locker room, sure, but try to avoid heavy minutes from vets when your focus is to develop young players, and winning now is not the purpose.
Winning in the NBA takes time. You can't skip steps.
MJ, Lebron, Curry, etc, took 6-7 years and more to get their first rings.
27-28 is the average age of MVPs and Championship winning teams.
Spurs are doing just fine, the big picture is just not about this season, but the next 3 to 15 years.
Victor could not be in a better place:
      - GOAT coach. 28 years of experience. Most NBA wins ever. Active coach with the most rings.
      - Pop has coached 2 of the greatest big men of all time through multiple eras.
      - Highest future cap space in the league, second most draft picks over the next decade.
In 2 years, they will already look significantly better.
Year 3-5, they should start to be a perennial threat for the title.
      Patience is the only way.
Keep "Pounding the Rock", as the Spurs motto says.

If he stays healthy, stays on this trajectory, improving every season in his early career, can start putting up superstar numbers winning multiple DPOYS (which is definitely a thing he can even get this SZN) and can MAYBE win MVPS in the distant future with Rings, MJ's title may be at risk. This.
People don't realize that "Best prospect ever" is actually not far-fetched.
He's probably not as hyped as Lebron was, and he might not reach his level (because Lebron exceeded the already crazy expectations, which is the unbelievable part).
But Victor's ceiling truly is the highest we've ever seen.
Reaching and maintaining that level for 15-20 years is the almost impossible part, but the sheer potential is there.
And it's not just because of size, skills and wingspan.
That combo already makes him a one-in-a-billion prospect, sure.
      But it's the intangibles:
Humble but extremely confident, selfless/team-oriented, but wants to be the greatest.
Loves the pressure, and is unphased by the attention (I mean, he had 20 years of his lifetime being the center of attention everywhere he went, with his size and talent, so I guess it's normal for him at this point).
      Smart, educated, well-spoken.
Has love for the game: does not play Basketball just because he's tall.
Incredible work ethic, takes care of his body and health, highly driven.
A loving and healthy family of professional Basketball players/coaches and pro athletes.
Has already been a professional, surrounded by grown adults from multiple countries and cultures, for a few years, which makes him more adaptable, ready, and mature,.
Does not care about ego, social media, flashy stuff, money, materialistic things.
The whole package makes him a one-of-one.

    • @cheesycarrotsoup
      @cheesycarrotsoup 11 місяців тому

@@guillaumeraux LeBron never tanked to get a team around him. Having the worst record in the NBA doest guarantee you a high draft pick. • @guillaumeraux
      @guillaumeraux 11 місяців тому

@@cheesycarrotsoup Yeah, and that's exactly why rookie Lebron spent his entire rookie contract without a ring and asked out.
Cavs wanted to win now and rushed things instead of taking the time to use their assets properly.
Lebron only came back to the Cavs because he grew up next to Cleveland.
Wemby would not have any reason to come back if he left.
This is exactly why the Spurs aren't doing what the Cavs did: try to put all of their assets into dumb trades to win during Wemby's first year.
Luka Mavs did the same and nothing happened in 6 years.
Lebron had to move to franchises willing to build superteams (which didn't last more than a few years), once he started to get to his peak (fortunately, he had a 15-year peak).
Winning or losing, tanking, is not a player's decision. It's not in the Spurs interest to win this season. Especially if they want to keep Wemby longer than 4 or 7 years.
It does not matters how much he loses this season. But it matters what type of talent he'll have around him for the long-term future.
They need to still have a bright long-term future with the right assets when he hits his peak, so that they remain his best option.
Spurs want to build a team capable of contending for probably 10 years at least.
Year 3 to 15 is the window they probably aim for.
If anything, Lebron's case is the exact reason why the Spurs are tanking for Wemby's first year.
To not be mid for 4 years until Wemby asks out.
By the way, KAT just scored 60 and his team lost.
The last Championship team relied on a selfless superstar.
The NBA might need stars to win, sure. But it certainly needs more than one good player to get there.
Otherwise, the current MVP would win a ring every year.
Harden, Dame, Luka, and Embiid are still ringless, last time I checked.
Still a team's game. Spurs are not building superteams being a small market franchise.
They'll draft and develop. They have some of the best record in the last 3 decades on that front.

It’s his competitiveness and professionalism that has impressed me the most so far. Wemby doesn’t shake with just everyone after the game, and during the game he’s definitely not going to be everyone’s buddy. He does celebrate and pose when he makes an impressive play, but only when there’s a foul called and the play has stopped, otherwise he’s sprinting back to play defense. The kid has such a good mentality, and that’s usually what it takes for an athlete to reach greatness, on top of all the physical attributes ofc. Really excited to see him develop.

    • @SilverSkitterscuttle
      @SilverSkitterscuttle 11 місяців тому

I do not think it is professional or admirable not to shake hands. That does not mean he needs to be buddy buddy, but like seeing him celebrate a good play by walking towards & trying to stare down a player he beat for a block, this is not as admirable as some of his other virtues. Like the work ethic you refer to.
I like him a lot, but I would rather see him humble than the ungracious menacing act I just saw in a highlight (& at his build to a player who could snap him in half lol!)
I am rooting for him; but I do not care who it is, a guy is unkind even if usually decent or better, he should be called on it.

The thing that NOBODY notices is the "quality" of his blocks. You had a highlight in the video of Zion slapping a shot into the fifth row. Lots of shot blockers karate chop shots into the crowd. Watch Wemby's blocks and notice how many of them are recovered by his teammates and lead to transition opportunities. The only guy I've ever seen do that at as high a rate is Tim Duncan, which makes sense since Timmy is helping him. His blocks are much better than most shot blockers because they help his team get more possessions. This is going to be a big deal as the Spurs improve.
