  • My friends, painting a Sherman doesn't have to be always about the same old Olive Drab! On this model, we'll tackle a hand-applied ochre camouflage on the tank's turret, we'll try some post shading on top of that, and we'll play around with all those traditional weathering techniques. But most importantly, we'll paint a realistic aged wood finish on top of planks made from styrene!

    Jedi-Mind-Trick: To get a „new spin“ you want to watch „Masters of the Sky“ and build a B17. You want to build an AIRCRAFT (yes i said it!). Martin, a B17 is the closest thing to the WW2 tank you do! come on!

    So excited to hear the talk at the top about breaking down hobby silos, have noticed since getting back in to scale model hobbies that while there's some overlap in a lot of cases armor modelers talk to armor modelers, ship modelers talk to ship modelers, mecha modelers talk to mecha modelers, rail modelers talk to rail modelers, wargames mini painters talk to wargames mini painters, etc etc etc, and there are techniques, media, and tools that are common basics in one that are considered rare/advanced or totally unheard-of in others. While some of this is understandable since certain tools and techniques are better fits for the particular needs of certain kinds of model subjects, there's also a lot of stuff that could be useful across those lines that doesn't get come through just because folks only learn from others in their own silo. I'm not an armor modeler myself but there are so many cross-applicable things I've learned watching this channel that I never would have learned if I'd only stuck to my own modeling/painting disciplines...

      @Ludicrous_Speedway 6 місяців тому

      Couldn’t agree more. There are so many techniques that really should be cross discipline. And for some reason they are not, I don’t really understand that especially these days with the wealth of information we all have access to. I’m a jack of all trades, I make/paint anything I think is cool. My favorite trick I have stolen from armor modelers and my tank models to use on anime figures is the good old clear coat after masking to stop paint bleed. Really helpful when you're working with transparent skin tone paint, yet I've never seen anyone else do it. Not to overstep my boundaries, But I think a lot of people are really good at making specific model types look good, and not the specific science behind achieving that. The overall artist approach v.s. The finish this army approach I guess. IDK.

      @@HunterJE Absolutely, I’ve used it to my advantage more times than I can count. Nothing like a little inter hobby espionage to aid in the modeling arms race. The funniest part about it all is when you get clickbaited by some “New Advanced Technique!” video and it turns out to be old tech. Thankfully Uncle Nightshift is one of the OGs who is aware of “Glaze” technology or whatever the current hype train is, lol.

      Totally agree, I got back into the hobby few years ago after building my last kit when I was 7, I'm 56 now. And from that first plane I 2020 I'm now doing miniature painting, warhammer stuff, but I've also built tanks ships and anti tank guns, and the skills I've learnt doing all these different kits and miniatures has helped doing them all. Plus the paints especially Tamiya works on all.

    Dry Brushing Tip: if you want your dry brushing to be smooth instead of grainy, use a very soft and lightly wet brush (the dry in dry brushing isn't about water, it's about paint, and you'll still be wiping off all the paint before touching the model)

    another thing to consider is how much rust would be tolerated as a crew and as a unit. often times, you'll touch up areas inside and out with whatever sorta-kinda close color and/or whatever paint you can get your hands on. spray paint, brush on....

      Also true... and then there's also that one thing which I'm not entirely sure of... but I think I've read somewhere that the USMC dumped their tanks into the ocean after the conquest on each island... and landed on the next one with new tanks. So there's a possibility that each island saw a batch of brand new vehicles.

    For the ink wash step, you can dillute it with matte (or even better glaze) medium, which will make it bead up less than if you just use ink and water. Or you can just get a pre-mixed acrylic wash paint from vallejo or games workshop among others

    You can get inkwashes to go into crevices more by adding acrylic medium and a little surfactant, like liquid soap, to the ink. There are also dedicated acrylic mediums that do the same thing (Army Painter's "Quickshade medium" is my choice). You can also use a moist brush to pull wet ink away from areas you don't want darkened.
    Some inkwashes, like the modern ones from Citadel's "shade" range, also have crevice seeking properties built in.

    I think the black inks surface tension was the culprit. I like mixing a tiny drop of dish soap with acrylic inks when I need them to behave. Maybe try that.
    Also, I recently painted a pacific themed vehicle and on a tip from my friend Jim Rice I mixed yellow and white ink and applied it lightly with an airbrush to give a wonderful sunny highlight to the green. I further shaded the piece with brown and red shades of ink on the shadows to push and pull the green.

    Surface tension of the ink messed up your plans. You need something to break up the surface tension so the liquid coats the surface more evenly. Maybe a few drops of weak isopropanol or weak liquid detergent added to the ink mixture. There used to be a product called Photo-Flo back when photographers processed film emulsions to avoid spots on the negatives, but I'm not sure if that is still available in the last 20 years.

    • @NightShiftScaleModels

      Good point! AK has Glaze Medium which might break the surface tension, but yeah, a drop of dish soap would do the trick. I haven't considered that. It's interesting that the tension doesn't cause any issues on those styrofoam facades or on the wooden planks.

    I love how this tank crew is like "this steel isn't thick enough to stop shells! Let's add wood!" It's like... what's that gonna do. Its going to split at the grain and barely slow down the shell at all. If there's a gap it may work for shaped charges. But that's about it?

      Since there is a gap, it would be reasonably effective against smallish HEAT rounds (like a panzerfaust), but useless against any actual tank rounds. It was officially discouraged by the US army (particularly concrete, since it overloaded the tank's suspension), but most crews still did it since it made them feel safer, even if they actually weren't.
