Full Painting: SPz Puma "Urban Panzer Ops" (RFM 1/35)

- My friends, painting a modern armor model is very different from historical tanks. Of course, it depends on many factors, especially if it was deployed, but on a peacetime vehicle, your weathering possibilities are often limited to earth effects. Luckily, these vehicles get extremely dirty, and what's better, there's a weird urban camouflage made from old rags and wooden pallets!

I find it really refreshing that you’re painting a tank without so much weathering and damage - it looks amazing
" without so much weathering and damage..." : So ironic...
Now I really want an Abrams from Uncle Night Shift. Great work on this Puma though, it looks phenomenal!
I've had the one from Tamiya in 1/48th scale for a few years now, I should build it already!
@@NightShiftScaleModelsplease! I love that tank
@@NightShiftScaleModels Please do! I have one from Ryefield but the insane number of parts is quite daunting lol

Back when i still served in the Swiss army, we did have to "camo" up our Leopards and were often told that the idea is more to give you that few second edge on the enemy as they try to figure out what they're looking at. The "pallet pile" camo here can be effective at a glance overall so it makes sense. I love the near "clean" look vs your usual damaged vehicles, its also good practise for you i think to do something different and that's how we all learn :D
You know whats funny is when i was on my first deployment which later turned into going to afganistan, we did something similar in training.
I was a Marine Grunt. When wed find a spot for a firebase, well dig like grunts do, temporarily... the engineers would come help moving dirt and have stuff on pallets. The backhoe would
Dig a trench 1 bucket wide. We stuck the pallets in the trench then put branches and poles with camo netting in them. Its to semi conceal what we're doing or at the very least make it impossible to make out. We gotta put food, water, fuel and supplies in multiple spots. We need a generator, comms, mortars and sleeping quarters to be unknown, in the base.
i just imagine that this would be a good way to conceal your tank in a woodwork... sägewerk? tha place where theres a lot of wood.
The model turned out great!!! I'm a Panzergrenadier Feldwebel 😀 and I noticed two things! When we're in practice, we'll attach the tow rope to the stern! If the vehicle needs to be towed! 2 We cover the license plates and reflector with duct tape! And we cover the indicators and headlights with cloths or jute. We unscrew the yellow beacon on the tower! But otherwise, as always, it's fantastic work and a great video!!!! Greetings from Frankfurt/M

Thanks a lot for your detailed insights! I knew that I was making mistakes while adding/painting some of the details, just didn't know what they would be :D I basically just applied various ideas from reference images into one model without knowing the specifics.
No problem 😀The errors in the paintwork are not noticeable, we Germans have adopted a lot from WW2. Until 10 years ago we would still be trained in the same way as we were back then! It wasn't until body armor came along that training was modernized! But we kept everything for camouflage and practical activities such as getting the tow rope ready for use! Dur Have a nice weekend and have fun and patience with model building 😀🤗
Greetings Dominique
May i ask in what way u trained like WW2, tactics? @@bravo3leader722
I literally had to Google this to see if you were having us on. As a British Challenger 2 crewman I have never seen or heard of this being done before.
Also I love how the Germans project the camouflage pattern onto the tank to paint it. If us Brits are lucky REME will have a spray booth and do it, otherwise we're handed a tine of black paint and a brush and told to go paint some squiggly line patterns 😂 It probably doesn't help that we can't have them with painted camouflage in the UK as apparently its too aggressive, I'm pretty sure it's the 76 tonnes of metal rather than the paint which is the more aggressive part, but what do I know 🤷♂️
Great build and paint job as usual.
😂 Seems to be the same story everywhere: What do we - who have to handle alle this garbage - know!?
My depression was just cured by the infrequent but well anticipated night shift release. Awesome video! Keep up good work!

Amazing work, and a very pleasant video to watch.
I couldn't believe you weren't making up this "urban camo" stuff, so I went and looked for some references. And I mean: wow. You actually went very easy on the crap hanging from the tank. Those Pumas in the photos look like they first went full-speed through a dumpster behind an Aldi warehouse AND THEN the whole unit decided to hang their wet underwear on the gun to dry.
Looks absolutely amazing. The pallets have made it look so much more interesting than without
When there goes my sleeping for another 30 minutes, but it is worth it to watch night shift, even at 2 am where I live.
Me too 😴🇦🇺

I always liked adding holigraphic paper to my modern optics in place of paintng them. It gives a pretty realistic effect for how reflective modern optics look and also provide a super interesting dynamic detail that changes depending on what direction you look at it. It can be a little tricky to aply but super worth it. Amazing job dude been looking forward to this video for a while
I love this project so much! I didn't know what to expect, but the trash panda camo is so intricate and has so many different types of surfaces, how could anyone not love the look of this thing?
The pristine Puma with its rubber mats, anti-slip and flat areas, wood, rope and tarps, visually, there is so much variety going on. Looking forward to the finished diorama and how well the tank will blend into it.
cool! this pallete armor/camo is a game changer for this model!:)
I would live to see some coffee rings in places around the hatches - where crew would rest a mug whist on a break. Those a foot prints and oily or polished hand marks on places where they would climb and rub the surface. Just ideas. Apart from that everything you do is just amazing. Cheers for posting!
I personally think, this is the best tank that you have done so far uncle Night Shift! The camouflage and the details are amazing!
Great work. I'm liking the minimalistic chipping on a modern tank. Inspires me to work on my abrams and leopard 2 sitting in the stash. Thanks!
Looks amazing! I think you painted yourself in a corner and now the scenic base has to have some tarp/trash covered soldiers :) would LOVE to see that
It's definitely unusual camo/stowage, I didn't see it coming but it's nice to see one of your works not so damaged. I love it. Do more like this.
This is definitely worth the wait! Great work man, keep it up. (And take you’re time:)
Love it with the pallets and it looks properly used.
Those standardized downscaled handcrafted europallets are amazing...works of madness, I mean art
this video and commentay is top top quality - as is the model of course. I am glad you are taking more time instead of rushing for one video a week. It shows!
The convoy light hanging off immediately took me back to following one. Looks spot on. Just a little.thimg in an all over great project.
Honestly I love the pallet camo, it's a solid deviation from alternative options. Super gorgeous model, always impressed with your work
Love the trick of coloring the green stuff with pigment
I love this modification you've made to the Puma, it looks amazing and once again you've shown how talented you are!
...trash and pallets and rugs and barrels -- especially in recent drone footage a lot of armored vehicles wearing trash ghillie suits! Far from the Bundeswehr norm of attaching a tree's worth of foliage... This is amazing modeling!
Another amazing model 💪 I'm happy that You discovered Modellers World products, for me they are "game changer". Total Cleaner have remove all types of the paints 🤛
where you buy those products?
I don't really like modern tanks, but this model... With its " plank armor" is a masterpiece! It is the most unique puma tank I have ever seen.
That looks amazing! Like the different approach and modern subject.
Pffffff! This is (even) one of your best jobs ever! Congratulations!
Amazing job! It looks awesome! And as usual a really enjoyable video!
YAY! Always a good day when Uncle Night-shift posts
That is the best model paint job I've seen on yt.
that trash panda looks awesome! keep up the good work 👍
Can't wait to see the scene too
Love the modern, high-tech IFV mixed with such an old-school form of camo with the pallets.
I thought you were thinking of a puma campuflaged with a crap ton of pin branches. These look very cool. But those pallets are something special.
I love your trash panda! It's one of my favorite builds out of everything! Thank you for going all out creative on this one.
I would love to see how you build a tank in bigger scale 1/16.
Me to. Like à sherman. The olive drab would be a real challenge imo.
oh hell yeah! been waiting can't wait to watch thank you Uncle 🙏
I like the pallet camouflage. Makes a bland vehicle more interesting. Well done.
Amazing build and amazing painting... one of the most realistic models I've seen.
I really love your idea of tanks that look specials and unusual, like this puma with pallets on it.
Of course it's better ! there are enough clean-looking tanks on mirror bases at the model convention as it is.
Lovin' the palettes, looks awesome and will be a standout piece in your collection, I am sure of it!
Very nice as usual. I believe the Puma tracks have like most modern tanks rubber pads on the inside as well though and are not shiny metal…..as far as the pattern painting goes, I remember when I visited a Leopard 2 refurbishing plant in Germany, how they used a wireframe contraption mounted around the tank where the paintgun would hook into, to guide the painter with the camo pattern. That really blew my mind and explained why all of the vehicle specific patterns were so uniform. That was like 20 years ago though…😊
the "junk" camo made this far and away my favorite of your builds
Always enjoy watching uncle Nightshift do his stuff!
One thing to be aware of is, even in peacetime, the paint ends up being abused. It doesn't have to be bullets or enemy fire. Branches, strands of left over barbed wire from previous training evolutions, pieces of equipment that aren't tied down tightly (that could make for an interesting feature... say a cable with a loose end that was swinging in an arc as it went over bumps or something like those pallets jostling about and scuffing the paint), and lets not forget... rocks of varying sizes being flung about when going full fast-forward. The vehicle itself won't pick up much damage in an exercise, but the paint sure does.
Tanks covered in random scraps the crew found will never not look great, be it Soviet tankers welding bed-frames on their T-34s in the Eastern Front, US tankers covering their Pattons with crates and bushes in the jungles of Vietnam, or even today with Asian countries covering their APCs and IFVs with wood and cardboard boxes. There's just something about the contrast between the professional, purpose-made look of tanks and the DIY, hacked-together look of wood scraps that just goes so well together, and I believe your Puma model just represents that so well.
Damn, thats awesome. Im going to steal the pallet camo idea, its great!
Yaaay more night shift! I love modern stuff. You should do an M163 VAADS (if they even make kits for that) or a T35 heavy tank. I think that would be awesome
That's really inspired me to build something modern!
Very nice results. Palettes are a nice touch.
I bet the diorama is going to be awesome!
Great work!
The pallet works kind of reminded me to Philippine Army V150 'FREE WIFI' in Marawi.
The pallets reminded me of a similarly decorated V-150 used by the Philippine Army named "Free Wifi" and I wish you'd do a model on that too
Despite what others might think, I like it. It kind of follows a "perpetual war" theme i use with all of my AFV models. I do two different perpetual war themes. The first is a what if it is the late 50's, WW2 never ended, and all arms design stopped in 1948 so you have all manner of theoretical variations of tanks with up armor packages and early IR systems. The second theme is what if there is a WW3 and everything that has existed old and modern has gotten SEP packages and in the field modifications. (think of an M4 with an Italian 76mm OTO and Cage armor)
Your videos are never boring or uninteresting., A most unusual build and camouflage technique,
“You didnt see me at the camouflage training” LoL
Thats a kick ass Puma!!!!
My friend, this is an amazing job.Congratulations.
When keeping green stuff put it in a glass container with s lid (I use old mixed herb tubs) but before you store it in the glass container make sure the yellow is sticky if it isnt then you have to take off a layer because its cured with the plastic

What a neat build, So I'm now out to buy some Balsa wood/verneers. Gonna build me some pallets. I hope there's a figure to go along with it.
I haven't watched the video yet but holy crap the thumbnail looks amazing. This will be one hell of a ride.
beautifully done!
The details are insane great work!!
Trash Panda is right there! It is a lesson in Urban Camo!
looks amazing reminds me of a post apoc tank
As a ww2 modeler I wasn't too excited when this project started, but man you delivered and now I am even thinking about doing a modern vehicle. Thanks for that 🤨😅
I think this model is over the top man, nice work as usual. if I may say, you spent time concealing and breaking up the lines of the hull; however, there is no breakup of the 30mm barrel/shroud or turret lines.
quick side note, it's rather disappointing that urban camo in present days consists of loading a soldier or vehicle with trash and debris. rather than the previous greys, whites, and blacks pattern.
Fantastic bud.. very original!!! I hope you make a model of the new Polish/Korean tank. Seen them in action.. and very muddy.
Really cool idea!
Covid lockdown in the UK brought me back to modelling in my 50’s after I’d not done any since my mid teens… ( I desperately needed something as I found myself mentally on the verge of beginning to unravel..) Finding your channel helped me to see, understand and develop new skills myself. It’s been a hugely positive benefit personally, and I always enjoy watching what you produce… many thanks for sharing… great work!! 🤗👍🏼👍🏼😁😁
The wooden boards look so gooood
Very groovy! I just wish you'd painted some crew figures in a matching 'pallets and rags' camo scheme ^.^
It looks epic!
Awesome work! I buy puma, and use your work like an example
Its probably a little different for each country, but in the US Army all the camo patterns are standardized. Even a jeep. There are two places where they are painted. #1 in the factory, and #2 during maintenance we repaint (about once a year IIRC). The painting is done by either the crews, or the mechanics in the HQ platoon. The mechanics are almost always busy and understaffed, so often they only spray on the base coat, and the crews brush on the camo pattern. The crews are also the ones who caulk the vehicles (draw the patterns on the vehicles), and because of this you get some variation. In West Germany, everything was sprayed. Never had to paint anything when I was over there. Never asked, either.
Professional as always.
Your improvised urban camouflage looks amazing!
Looks awesome (as always)! Watching your videos got me back into modelling, so thank you! Also I had no idea that pallets were used as an improvised camouflage, very interesting.
Common Night Shift banger.
As always an absolute stunner. One thing I would note is that the pads on the inside of the tracks are also made of rubber rather than steel.
Always impressive, my god you are good. I'm maybe just not convince by the choice of color for the ropes for a modern vehicle. It's quite rare to come across classic "weed" rope in today Germany.
until now this is my favorite of your models, it looks so cool
Cool that you showed something from Modellers World. They are little known and they are doing probably the best stuff at the moment. Try the oil wash they are awesome
Another masterpiece!!! Well done as always!
I love your attitude! Fantastic work! What camera do you use to film? your closeups are crisp and clear.
What a pity that I cant share my Marder with pallet urban camo. Love it!
and now here for part 2
Fantastic work! Almost looks post apocalyptic, the weathering and added extras come together really well.
Love it!!!!
Once again an excellent video. I was a bit puzzled on how this would turn into the one on thumbnail for most of the video. Almost even mad because it looked so pristine. But pristine is boring. End result speaks for itself.
One thing i found to be a good fit for ropes in this scale was this wire they use in jewelry making. For beads and whatnot. already braided, fairly rigid so you can force some shapes to it too if needed, to create an illusion of weight hanging from it. I don't have any specific make in mind, but you can prolly find that from basically any crafts store.
That EUR Pallet idea was brilliant by the way. I wonder if in real life soldiers would also put some of those flimsier disposable ones in use too, as they are like third of the weight of a "genuine" EUR pallet... That way you could give yourself some freedoms on designs, use some off cuts and trash pieces too to make those. Used to work in terminals and those awful things were everywhere. We used to give them out to people for firewood as they were no good for storing anything on shelves.
This is awesome! I totally agree, the pallets add a ton of character to the kit. The personal touches are what makes the model special, great work!
I see bubbles in your paint cup, to my knowledge that's a sign that one of the O-rings are failing.
love to see you do a flak 88 diorama
You ought to kitbash a model tank to look like something from Valkyria Chronicles
Now we need the Leopard 2 as well.
Amazing
Looks amazing but the turrets missing some kind of camo IMO. Maybe some tarps on the turret cheeks?
Stunning………….
