Let's Build: Old Land Rover Tow Truck! (AK-Interactive 1/35)

- My friends, who would imagine that you can put so much work into such a little kit? This 1/35 Land Rover is probably the smallest model I've ever done in this scale, yet it's full of interesting textures and weathering effects! Creating a crusted grime effect on the weathered paint job was so much fun!

Disclaimer: I have a good relationship with a handful of modelling brands and stores, namely VMS, Michigan Toy Soldier Company, and AK-Interactive. As such, I'm happy to use their products/services, and show them in my work. In return, they support my efforts in this hobby, although my hands are not bound nor am I obligated to push one brand or the other. This was one of the founding ideas of the channel and I will always stand by this.

"ugly gap" - Land Rover owners: "Don't worry Rovie, he didn't mean that."
I was about to say - historically accurately. 😂
Agreed, it looked pretty close compared to what the real thing looks like.
That's not an ugly gap, it's a design feature, part of what makes every landy unique.
As a classic landrover owner and scale modeller this has made me so happy! Thank you brother!
Wait, what is the story with Syrian T-72? What happened?
It got hit by an RPG
0:21 What happened to gravity?
Hill
@@hrexthedoish3419 that's also what I thought. The vegetation convincingly makes it look flat.
Spine tingling, truck painting, model chilling gem 💎
Martin kinda looks like a soyjack ngl

Love the vid. Nice work. In future you can heat up the copper wire till it changes color then quickly quench it in water. It will become very soft and pliable. Much easier to work with and get to lay naturally.
I could be mistaken, as i am not an expert on this matter. But i do think that this here is not a tank.
Excellent work. I've built this kit and didn't enjoy the construction one bit. Yours looks outstanding. Really well done sir
Wow, truly amazing inspirational work.. bravo sir, bravo
i love how your videos appear on my feed in at least a hour
What happened to the t72 you mentionned in the video ?!? 😢 still waiting for the diorama of this tank!!!😢😢
Just ordered one of these kits. My 1:1 scake 109 is parked outside. You should see the shut lines and panel gaps on that!!
Your videos are inspiring - I'm gonna have to pull one of my armor kits out and try again!
Thank you for putting in the hours to get this video out sooner Martin, the model looks awesome! I've got 2 variants of this AK kit in the stash, so was a pleasant surprise to see this video pop up. I'm going to pick up both of the VW T2's tomorrow, so looking forward to seeing what you make of them when you do them :)
Lovely work, Martin, as always. I have some vehicles to make with a similar work-worn appearance so this is going to come in very handy. You probably already know but apparently the business that owned this vehicle is at 52°00'06.0"N 2°11'09.0"W - just in case that's helpful for the diorama. Looking forward to it 👍
Absolutely fantastic.
I have the AK Unimog S404 in my stash, having rummaged through the box its certainly very detailed and will be perfect for building up into a bush war variant
Just amazing work. Bravo "And NOW we start the weathering..." (START?!?! It looks great already!) 😱 ❤
Is it just me?? But when I get up in the morning and I hear "Ma Friends......" It's a good day. 😬
Another amazing model! Keep them coming, thank you!!!! One day perhaps an small train layout :-)
Very nice build. But i missed hearing dirt from my garden trademark.
Hate to be a pedant, but a Mk1 Landrover made 1949 - 1958 on a registration plate from 1966. Incredible kit making as usual though.
Yeah the 88" Was introduced in 56.
The model is of a series 2
Liked before watching! That's the way to do with your videos! :D Oh yeah, what's the best thing for stripping paint? (home made) brake fluid?
we missed you a lot...:)
Fantastic work. This vehicle is another work of art. Greetings Tino
Learn so much from your videos, and it’s a bonus that this one is sending a ton of traffic to my latest Land Rover-based build! Thanks Martin!
Top notch work Martin! Always a pleasure to have your inspiring videos playing while I work on hobby stuff in my basement.
That's quite an accurate model . It's got Salisbury axles that on the real series land rovers and the defenders was a heavy duty axle . And the tyres where a military tire fitted to series 2a and 3 108 inch and 88 inch airportible lightweight land rovers . They went out of production but another company has started making them for british military land rover owners. Loving the channel thank you. 👍
A cracking video and workmanship👍✌️💜😊 I dont live too far away from Ledbury and that Land Rover reminds me of Land Rovers that my dad and others owned, hard working, beat up vehicles, from the 1970s and 1980s.
Yellow is always a challenge as its a "warning colour" for humans and animals, as is red, orange etc, so the eye is drawn to it, thus it has to be treated with respect. You've done a marvelous job of it👍✌️💜😊
Im working on two yellow railway vans, they require similar treatment, and Ive employed filters (to replicate cement dust), weathering and water colour pencils, Ive also used fibre brushing to age the branding (lettering), false shading, Gouache and trompe l'œil. Im always wary of modelling these "warning colours", but when shaded, weathered etc, they turn out okay, albeit they take more work than other colours, hues and tones.
I thought about purchasing one of those cutters, but like you I suspect Id use it very infrequently - but when used theyre worth their weight in gold? Im still undecided 🤔🤔
I also use acrylic markers, Im tempted by the new AK versions - so Ill give them a look👍👍
Great work, great video ✌️👍😊
Making a Landrover into a tow truck is like making the Titanic a rescue ship! Great model though my landrover model has aluminium shining through worn and chipped paint like my real landrover.
My dad had a land rover with a Harvey Frost winch in the back like that for his car breakers yard. Except it was army surplus so the fuel tank was under the seats
I'm applying some of the techniques I learnt watching your videos on a thundermodel Case VAI loader. Mine is going to be a rusty old wreck.
Hi Martin, thst was an absolute work of art, it's nice to see older vehicles modelled, I once saw a very well weathered Landrover in Mexico City, that would have made a great weathering subject, best regards from Australia, Les
WOW! Amazing! Honey, you are the Chip Master!!! More patience than all your viewers combined!
Looks fantastic Martin. Just an idea if you're doing more vehicles with windows but have you seen the templates for making window masks to create dusty glass. Send me a PM if not and I'll link you the page
It was a really nice video, but i think it raised more questions for me. I am mostly focused on smaller scale stuff like Battletech, which works in 1/265 scale. Miniatures are like 1-2 inches tall, and now they released a few combat vehicles as well.
Maybe thats something you could tackle? Techniques which still work despite a tank only being like an inch long?
IMO you could have applied lettering after the final painting was completed. I feel you had to retrace steps. ---- Painted lettering I agree is best for weathered lettering. ---- As usual the finished model was a beauty!
At this point the actual model you are building doesn’t matter anymore. Its all about your workflow, your technques, your artistic approach and - last but nit least - taking and TALKING us through it. Great work Martin!
Great job, really?Like how you painted that little toad truck might have to pick up that kit. Can't wait to see the diarrhea. You build, it's always great seeing your videos. Can't wait for your nexcellent keep up to good work
Inspiring, as always...now torn between your rust techniques and one i saw when researching a hasegawa bus kit for ideas. Saw a technique we sometimes use with watercolor painting, salt chipping. Saw an amazing use on a Workshop Recorder vid, for a VW delivery van project (5 year old vid). The difference i saw was large area vs fine detailing/small area. Now i want to try both and see how they come out. Appreciate your time, patience, and videos
I'm a complete amateur and only do gundams. That 6:12 part about smoothing things out with thin cement is a godsend advice.
Things I learn from here rarely get used to the models I prefer to work on, but are surprisingly good to know every now and then. Thank you man.
I'm building the AFV Club m60a2 starship right now. It's a awesome model you should look into
"Oi - who are you? **** off!" My word Night Shift, this real life reference stuff you do for your models will get you in trouble one of these days - I'm going to watch the bloopers at the end to see you chased off by dogs....! 😊
Anyway - brilliant work, as usual. To remove the seam line on those rubber tyres you could put the tyre on drill and sand it as it revolves....
Looking forward to see the diorama. You should add an engine from another kit (or 3D print). There's always an engine around whenever these vehicles are involved. :))
I can‘t wait for the VW Transporter. My fire department had two of them, but with windows as command cars. And in bright red like on life vests.
Hi, i know its completly out of context but i just did my first diorama and i kinda followed your mini 1/100 stug video diorama. Great video btw:)
UNIMOG!??!??!
I mean, this one was good too...
but UNIMOG!
Very nice work. I did cars/trucks back when I was a kid in the 60's. Not so much, since. It's a whole different skill set. Cool.
The yellow colour is specific to AA (Automobile Association) roadside assistance vehicles in the UK rather than a Land Rover colour.
Landrover you say?? the best u can do with a landrover is makinging it jurassic park feemted and you shodu do that!
12:49 Aluminium turns white when it oxidises anyway, so "rusty aluminium" is white.
Awesome as always! But the pinwashes are getting a little too dark and overwhelming lately... At least for my humble taste :)
As a Series Land Rover owner for over three decades and a model maker from even before that, this is superb! Thanks for a great video.
Whooohoo. A Friday afternoon vid from uncle nightshift. Just in time for the weekend😊
you really need to build a panzer iv late variant...really would like to see your take on the classic panzer iv
Regarding his preference for some grime and rust, the next project will probably be one of these super diggers that they use in coal surface mining. 🤔
How about an old beater 1970 Dodge Dart with tires that are so bald they show the cords 😅😅😅
Looks, good but I mis the green in the Land Rover logo on the front radiator and the one on the back. Makes the logo stand out a but more and probably makes the front less monotone.
I'm always at awe with your thoroughness. I love your work! Great job!
Uncle nightshift you should try the rye field matv has a lot of detail in the engine bay and you can pose the hood open or doors open it's one of my favorite models
Superb result. I'd love seeing the Unimog or Transporter done up!
Hey im just asking but do you have the british special air service jeep cuz it would be cool to build it and a nice diorama
Can you review the Trumpeter object 490b please?
Love the when you do the one video where you build and paint, looks amazing as usual. Keep it up!!
What will you be doing with the leftover sprues/bits?
Love the change of pace from military subjects!
🔥🔥Wow, your model looks so much better than my attempt. 😅In the video, you also skip over the most frustrating part of the build; the engine. I was so happy when that part was done! Your patience and attention to detail is inspiring. I hope there’s another good model of this car out there because I think it’s one of the coolest cars! Looking forward to your diorama... 🤩
Next please a Jagdpanzer IV L/70 or a Panther G ❤❤😂
Absolutely love your vids man! I was super duper happy to see an upload today!
Your work is always top notch material. Great job.
Just a comment for your algorithm. Best wishes.
You should do a Gundam Ez 8 custom paint as a M4A3E8 👀
Plether, plastic leather, nice and easy to clean unil it starts falling apart
Your VW Beetle video was how I found your channel!
Microscales micro Krystal clear for those windows
Ha, just noticed the "I'm sexy and I tow it" comment 😊
Hello please build opel omnibus and kubelwagen i love your video's
Was he trying to say “Tow Truck”?? 🤣🤣
the garage down the road as a kid had a landrover in a similar state. awesome job Martin
I learnt to drive in one of these, crane included, I feel old now... 🤣
Lovely work uncle night shift love the work
New video in less than 3 weeks! Where is my glass of vine?)
incredible result my friend
Hang on, eight hours to paint the dash and seats? Wtf
not too much rust as a lot of Land Rover is made from aluminium!
Any chance of 1/16 scale tank? Would love to see your detailing on it
Came out amazing, my friend 👍☕️
Nice, I like these civilian subjects once in a while.
woohoo! new nightshift! pouring my cup of coffee now 😎
Actually better made than a real Land Rover.
Captain Overkill strikes again!
As a land rover owner i can tell you for absolute certain that the elephant hide seat covers would be ripped to fck on the passenger and drivers side. With often a later black seat or even the base wrapped in a fertilizer bag, for that farm fresh look. The central ones usually survive quite well as they get little use. Moss on the side window runners is also a must
Or held together with sticky tape.
I've got the same one, maybe I'll do it soon now.
"more of a jeep guy" what's your dream jeep
Amazing job, you are a master sir.
I have to laugh when he says the pickup bed doesn't fit to the chasis, clasic landy, i have a ex army series 3 and almost none of it fits properly. Got to love a landy
Amen brother! I’m so happy that he realized the body is aluminum. I cringe every time I see a Landy model with rusty body panels. No clue how to represent any galvanic corrosion tho.
The wonky camera at the start was trippy!
Excellent modelling and painting skills as usual but the final result is disappointing: the weathering is overdone and this turned into an unrealistic model.
Seen lots of land rovers in this sort of condition about. Many of them lasted for decades in everyday use. Some still are!
i really want to see him paint a small space marine
Looking forward to the diorama!
