My 17 year old daughter loves metal (I may or may not have had a hand in that). She mentioned the other day that it sucks for her, because all the guys in these bands are either old or dead. She told me at least I got to see them, and she can't.
The fact that the music is old, and I'm getting old with it, was a hard pill to swallow.
That's very sad. Ik my boys in Metallica are old but they put on a great show. These old bands people need to see before they can't play anymore.
@@TransNFLGirl not motley crue they should have retired like a decade ago
@@lockandloadlikehell True.
HAHAHAHAHAH THIS GOOB AND HIS CHILD DON'T KNOW HOW TO NAVIGATE THE UNDERGROUND TO FIND GOOD BEDROOM PROJECTS SO THEY THINK THE ONLY METAL THAT EXISTED WAS BEFORE 1990
luckly i mainly listen to a lot of melodeath and symphonic metal and the big names of those genres are still going today, but damn it must be rough for thrash or classic metal fans.
As a 50s metal elder , my hardest pill to swallow is that metal isn't 'scary' anymore...I remember back in 83 walking around in my then brand new Number of The Beast tshirt and having people whispering and stepping aside...some even held their children more tightly! And I'd laugh my ass off when out of ear shot...lol...good times..
Dangerous** But i agree.. 45 years old here.
Ice Nine Kills is still scary Metal because their songs are based off of horror movies.
its still scary, only just a t-shirt is not enough anymore. I used to walk all black and metal t-shirt wearing nice black boots and people would switch catwalk just not to cross my path on the streets
Iron maiden isn't metal .. just because of the artwork don't mean it's metal ..it's definitely rock ..not much different to queen..
Maiden and Queen? Have you listened to either band?
The hard to shallow pill I had ever experience is it’s hard to find people who is into metal in school. Sure there are people who are into nu, industrial, and core. But you won’t find anyone who is into Thrash, Death, Black, and more.
I think it’s because of me being a smaller school where there is 300 people in it.
I study in an Italian high school of something like 1000 students, it's the same if not even worse: no metal at all. And also a poser with a Metallica shirt close to my class :DD
Where are you from? The USA?
i was in a school of 1000 kids, no one else was into metal
I went to a school like that, which us how I met someone that showed me behemoth and nile and black metal stuff before it was on the internet
Could be they haven't heard any of it
I guess I was lucky. I went to a high school of 2000 students and I knew a good handful of people into black, death and thrash metal. It was by no means super popular, but I always had people to discuss the music with. Same with progressive rock (we Canadians love our Rush)
@@hazardousjazzgasm129 Canadians seem to be more well educated on music to me... In Italy it's sadly the opposite.
My hardest pill to swallow is letting people who don’t know metal, wear metal shirts. Even knowing I had grown up listening to that band, I’m still glad to see people at least acknowledge the band’s title name even if they thought it was a clothing brand name.
This is why I call touring musicians traveling T shirt salesmen. You're basically going to a live advertisement for a fashion line. Buy a shirt.
The hardest pill to swallow to me is the sudden surge of trendifying black metal/death metal within girls today. It's only for style and attention. They confuse Metallica for black metal. Gets pretty old
Me seeing someone wearing a “Vetements” hoodie and being like is that a band? That logos dope. And then finding out it’s a luxury fashion brand selling like $600 hoodies.
When my son was in high school he saw a black girl wearing a Misfits shirt and asked her if she listened to the band and she said she thought it was a fashion brand!😂😂😂
@@Eirik_Bloodaxeisnt vetements "clothes" in french? Lol
For me, it was the metal heads would be my cool brethren who would form a powerful camaraderie. Truth is, I have met or encountered too many insufferable metal heads that I had no interest in being friends with. Just because we like the same music or video game, doesn’t mean we will be friends. That for me was a giant epiphany.
Experienced some like that, too. And with some metalheads...we just dont connect on a personal level. We can have everything in common but sometimes we just won't connect.
You mean the guys at the concerts who will stand in the corner with a beer in their hand, a scowl on their face, complaining about how the band isn't "true metal" or how the kids in the mosh pits are slam dancing. Then after the show they'll go home and complain about it on Stormfront. I know exactly the types you mean.
@@erikstorm8935 still I wish I had some metal head or punk friends. My best friends from high school will listen to Green Day or linkin park but that’s as heavy as it gets for them. Disturbed and lamb of god are seen as to brutal for their tastes and call it “ columbine shit”. I would like to have some comrades who be willing to join me in the halls of Valhalen as we await to destroy our foes in the depths of ragnarock ‘n’ roll.
@@deathmetal11111 I’m all for people having standards and taste, but cultural elitism in heavy metal is beyond annoying. Like yeah I’m not afraid to admit that I like hair metal, but that doesn’t make me less than you or anyone else. I can also appreciate the melodic structure of sanitarium and master of puppets and how it speaks to the darkest realms of our psyches, but I’m not going to scoff and put people down for liking Nickelback. Some people take heavy metal way too seriously imo.
Metal isn't for the weak, herd-minded sheep who refuse to avail themselves of such frivolities as friendship and romantic entanglements. Only true aristocrats of the soul are capable of appreciating the posthuman individualism of metal music, the rest are mere playactors donning the semiotics of overmen while remaining firmly pressed into conformity's bosom.
Last time I was this early morbid's og lineup still existed
I don't think UA-cam was a thing back then lol
Woosh dude.
Metal hasn't existed in the mainstream, period, for quite some time. The good news is, metalheads were early adapters of the internet, and that's what saved the music in the 90s. Flash forward to today, when metal is still one of the most vital rock genres that still attracts a youth following, and can sustain itself without any mainstream support at all!
Mainstream metal nowadays is crap is Ice Nine Kills and Motionless in white
It seems that metal still does well in the Billboard charts. Maybe on Spotify, too. But, of course, that doesn't mean they're necessarily popular. Simply due to how few people actually pay for music nowadays. It just means they have a dedicated fan base who IS willing to pay for it.
@@andysixxlett2632 Im so out of the loop I dont even know who they are, besides vaguely remembering their names.
@@erikstorm8935 Well that's some welcome news!
@@erikstorm8935Metalheads are more willing to pay for albums than the fans of most other genres! We tend to think in terms of albums rather than singles when assessing artists after all! 🤣🤣🤣
It doesn't bother me, but it could be classed as a "hard to swallow pill"
Most people in your workplace won't differentiate death metal, black metal, folk metal, or any other of the numerous subgenres from what they call "screamo". I've been privy to this fact in virtually every workplace I've been in lol 😂
Man, can I relate to that hahah!! 100% accurate
@@erasenegatedelete right! Hahah 🤣
Goddammit dude
you're so right lol
That serves as proof that people as a whole aren’t worth a shit.
My own hard to swallow pill is that my favorite band, Acid Bath, probably will never get back together. I love this band to death, they are literally the one metal band I NEVER get tired of hearing, yet their bassist died in 1997, Their vocalist doesn't want anything to do with it anymore, and all of the remaining members are getting up there in age and Dax Riggs hasn't been musically active in like 7 years.
It's so sad but just a thing ya gotta deal with I guess.
Ughhhh I felt that
I felt that after Nuclear Assault announced their retirement. Just a bit sad that I was only maybe a few years off from seeing them live. I have collected some cool Nuclear Assault memorabilia since then though.
Yeah, feeling the same, my favorite band is iced earth....
@@sk1pper722 Oh i know all of that. That is all incredibly awesome. Still though, the actual band itself probably will never get back together (With dax at least yk) and it makes me sad lol.
@@DaisyHead666 Yea it is cool that sammy still likes doing the Acid Bath stuff and it means that it's being kept alive in some way, but everyone said themselves that there is no Acid Bath without Audie. Dax also has an incredibly unique voice, hauntingly beautiful, and theres no replacing that in any way. Just sucks that it'll never happen since they were a stellar band.
A hard to swallow pill is even if metal did get big again, it would die again just as fast as it came. With social media people can go from nobodies, to famous, to has beens, in the span of a month. As a recent example, Master of Puppets blew up, and not even a year later most non-metal fans don't care about Metallica anymore.
Yeah because it's all about trendiying the music for style. Can't stand it
We're in the Tik Tok Era where something blows up, then is forgotten about like a week later lol. So this doesn't surprise me.
Lol MOP wasnt recent

As a black metalhead these are either irrelevant or not hard to swallow at all.
okay???

Wait...what?
Lol, get over yourself.
I once had a dream where Powerwolf performed "Dancing with the Dead" on Strictly Come Dancing (very popular show in the UK) and blew the roof off only to wake up and be really disappointed.
😐
Wow, that would be a MOOD. (I love Powerwolf!)
I once had a dream where gorgoroth opened for alter Bridge cause the promoter had not a lot of options and the promoter was a massive alter Bridge fan. I was doing lights for the gig n was watching the show from above over the crowd on the rafters n when gorgoroth went on the whole crowd went mental and I saw that the standing crowd were moshing and sweating so much that it turned into a swimming pool. There were also there 10ft tall extremely obese half naked women in corpse paint standing and turning round in circles. It was pandemonium. The gig had to be cancelled early cause of all the degeneracy n I mind backstage miles Kennedy approaching the promoter who was already a bit distraught and saying to him something along the lines of "That was an absolute disgrace! You're a shit promoter n we're not coming back!" Then walking away. The promoter guy having had his heat broken by one of his idols just muttered "Okay" back. I felt sorry for the guy.
I had a similar but simultaneously very different dream, where I was seeing Adele playing Rolling In The Deep at a local venue that was famous for metal/punk shows. When the chorus kicked in, a buncha dudes in black hoodies came out and started moshing hardcore style.
Hard to swallow pills:.
1. Name dropping bands and talking lyrics isn't such a great idea in a public setting where lots of strangers can hear you.
2. Dress nice for those family and group pictures. You aren't "sticking it to the man" or "disrupting the system" by being a jerk when your family wants a picture.
Brooo there is nothing more fun than randomly going 'WHEN IT'S COLD. AND WHEN IT'S DARK. THE FREEZING MOON CAN OBSESS YOU!' with the boys in public. Also since when is wearing merch about sticking it to the man? It's about expression man. Anyway I'm glad my family doesn't give a tit cuz I don't have money for nice clothes.
@@baalzagoroth4693 cringe
"So, uh, that new Cannibal Corpse album. Which are your 3 favorite songs? And speak louder because I just got back from a show and I'm hard of hearing".
2) "I can't wear my bullet belt? MOM!"
@@baalzagoroth4693 In all seriousness, I like the middle ground approach. For family photos, I wouldn't go all out on the metal gear. Hell, I don't even have all the metal gear! But, I see nothing wrong with metal shirts and a leather jacket. Whatever, if some relatives can dress like pop divas and rappers I can dress like a metalhead.
Regarding the Vikings (Norse really) way of life, actually, food back then was actually good, most of it was vegetables, fish and cereals, not much meat, and the health regarding their teeth was quite good as well. Regarding the runes, we have actually hundreds, if not thousands of examples of rune sticks used basically as an equivalent to modern phonetexts, one example is a woman asking a man to come back home, we don't have much more context, of course, but there are lots of examples similar, or people signing their stuff, like "this bag belongs to X", or stuff like that.
Regarding the weather, people weren't stupid also. Nowdays, when it rains, we try to keep indoors as much as possible, and the same applies for them. Sure, farm stuff had to be done, but if the weather did not allow it, they would use their time to repair their clothes, make new ones perhaps, or, as archeology shows, played board games, for instance. They also could have been painting their walls, their shields, taking care of their tools, etc. The houses of the time were actually quite well isolated, and lamps and the fireplace kept it all quite warm and bright. There were many things you could do indoors, as we do today, where we would listen to music, watch TV, play video games, and such, when the weather was too bad to go out. Also, you would be surprised to see how real wool keeps you warm and dry even under the rain. It's fascinating the properties that wool actually has.
Now of course all was't great, they did indeed have quite a lot of stomach worms, as it was for many people in general up until quite recently, infant mortality was definitely a thing. But though their were no schools (as far as we know) people still knew stuff. Mostly were farmers or fishermen. Now this is a very wide topic to sum up in this comment, but this is something I have been studying for some years now, being a viking age reenactor myself, I tend to read as much as possible on the period, look at archeology evidence, texts from the time period, and from it draw my perception of what life was, or could have been, back then. Now, of course we cannot be 100% accurate, because there is so much we do not know, but with what we know we try to get as close as possible to what we believe life could have been, and it evolves constantly, as there are always new studies, archeological finds, and experimentations to make.
Even still, its almost nothing like how is in cinema which is how people these days base their fantasies off of. Vikings are this generation's cowboys. Only difference is my dad grew out of fantasizing and dressing like an old west cowboy when he was 9 and today you have 32 year olds that cosplay what they think Vikings looked like based on TV shows and film but actually looked nothing like that. Which is fine, but these cosplayers should know that they are depicting a romanticized, modern, Hollywood view of Vikings and not take it so seriously.
@@CoffeeStain-Music as a historical reenactor, I can only agree
As a metalhead born in 1993, I spend my teen years watching the second generation of MTV Headbanger’s Ball and VH1’s That Metal Show and yes, I miss those shows a lot but have moved on and found other platforms to keep me on track and now I have a small UA-cam channel of my own where I talk about metal music and so on. The guys from That Metal Show, Don, Jim and Eddie are now starting a show on UA-cam catered to fans of the show so I just subscribe. Also, in Canada 🇨🇦, you guys have MuchMusic and in the United States 🇺🇸 we have VH1 and MTV owned by the company named Vacom.
Cool, i saw Impaled Nazarene live in 91 when there was no scene yet.. And they were a small Demo band..
Don, Jim and Eddie's new channel looks to be called "THAT Rocks!", thanks for the heads-up matey 🤘
@@Wagoo Your welcome!
Another one is that you aren't any less of a metalhead for listening to other genres as well
I feel bad for all of the young Metalheads today because we are so few and far between no matter the age. Try being 53 and your main sources of entertainment include OSDM, Black Metal, Slam, Grindcore etc. Finding someone my age that can take my extremes taste's is near impossible. I even struggle to find people who listen to mainstream Thrash anywhere near my age, which I do really enjoy btw. The hard pill to swallow is that at least for me, getting older made it more difficult to find my tribe as I refuse to have close friends that hate my musical tastes. Metal is too important to me to squelch so... Treat your friends with great appreciation, finding new friends with your hair down to your ass in a Cannibal Corpse T-Shirt in your 50's is a bitch! But, on the other hand, I wouldn't change a thing.
Wow, even thrash? You would have only been a teenager when thrash took off. What happened...did a lot of those fans just become 'normies'? That really sucks if true. I get developing new lifestyles and whatever. I personally dont look and dress like I did way back in the day. But I certainly still like the music I was really into back then. Maybe I dont listen to it all the time still, but I'm still into it. If someone is passionate about a certain type of music, I dont know how they can just stop liking it. Makes no sense. No matter what they look like today.
@@erikstorm8935 I agree, in my case though I have moved hundreds of miles away from where I grew up and I finally look the way I feel inside as far as my hair and general appearance. I started growing my hair when I became disabled. Now no boss is telling me to look normal. I have made friends with regular people but have not been as open to exposing them to certain bands. Stuff like Nirvana, Disturbed, Alice In chains are about as heavy as the friends I've made since high school ever really listened to. Which is fine but man I have heard all of those songs a million times. I too love the shit I loved back in the day and I think that a good song from my youth is still good as new but no one I know has really kept up with Metal the way I have. They all seem stuck in the 80's/90's. I tried to expand their horizons but I was always met with the dreaded "I like the music, but those vocals are horrible". And yeah man, it's been rough to find even Thrash fans. I can get along with the dudes that like more mainstream Rock or Heavy Metal but the fact that they only really like the tame stuff leaves me feel disappointment somehow. It's a "first world problem" and I certainly don't feel a depressed about it though! lol . I did move from Detroit to the South so I guess I asked for it. The scene sucks down South compared to the "D"
Most people who are diehard hard rockers/metalheads tend to be north of 30 years old in this day and age! 😂😂😂
recently I’ve noticed a surge of long haired individuals with the band shirts that they sell in hot topic or the ones that were trendy like a year ago. I think a lot more teenagers are beginning to get into metal after being “alternative” became a big thing on TikTok. Though most of them mostly listen to numetal or grunge because they think it fits their “aesthetic”, I still think it’s nice that more and more people my age are beginning to give metal a try. Just recently I walked into a Walmart and was met by a very enthusiastic stocker headbanging to some loud Pantera. I don’t like TikTok but hey, it’s bringing in a new generation of metal heads!
Metal generally has more effort put into it than 95% of modern rap and pop that dominates the charts now.
Honestly, 'mainstream metal content' sounds like CRAP compared to the metal youtube channels. Most of those older metal shows just talked about the same 10 heavy metal bands over and over. Sorry, but I do NOT need another goddamn interview with David Ellefson or Scott Ian.
Exactly dude. Even when those types of shows were around, I wasn’t interested because they only talked about the trendy bands. 🛶
I love metal. I love the sound I love basically everything about it, but I have been a punk since I was a kid and identify with it much more, I remember that one day I cried because I felt like I was missing out on having punk friends, going to underground shows and seeing bands. All because punk isn’t popular anymore, and it sucked because I always loved it so much and I never wanted to accept that. I still don’t have any friends that know anything about punk rock or even metal. And I still to this day feel like I’m missing out, none of my other friends get it, no matter how nice and genuine they are. Nobody knows what it’s like. I’m still in highschool man. And bands like operation ivy were playing shows when their members were in highschool, I just wanna go to a place like that.
Edit:thanks for being nice lol.
As a metalhead, I agree that it is very tough growing up in the alternative scene, where hardly any of your peers know and understand your music. When I was growing up, back in 1990’s and 2000’s, I was one of those few kids who listened to metal. Only metalheads and many punks understood that. Who cares what fans of other genres think. They are following their music because they only want to fit in. Not because they because they like the music. Metal, punk and other parts of the alternative scene (e.g. goth, grunge, and emo) are truly about the music. Don’t worry! Stay dedicated to what you like!
@@social191 thanks man! I appreciate it especially hearing from someone who alr graduated. I’m always gonna love most alternative styles and music but I just wish there was still a thriving community. Especially because I live in the suburbs and it kinda feels dystopian. But yeah, fuck everyone else.
I only met 2 people in my life ( I'm 31) that like black metal until I went to a Dark Funeral concert, surprisingly there were a lot of girls there that were actual fans and not just the girlfriend. Go to a show you'll make friends.
It's an amazing feeling walking into a bar with everyone loosing their sh over the same music you like.
I highly highly recommend Belphagor. Their live music sounds even better and darker then the record.
I’m also heavily into punk and metal, just graduated high school last year and never had any friends or knew anyone else who was into the same music. I honestly still don’t. Just wondering what city you live in (or relatively close to)? I used to think my city didn’t have an underground scene or any underground shows to go to. But when I finally figured out where to find underground shows I realized how many there were, maybe not in my town but close enough to access.
I still don’t have any friends who are into the same music, but going to shows by yourself can be a great experience too. That’s how to meet people who are like minded.
Awesome vid, new sub, and you're spot on! This was a great watch, appreciate you taking the time to do it. New Dethklok is going to be fire!
I don't think that Metal being gone from mainstream media is that big of an issue really. First of all, there are more than enough dedicated (underground) metal magazines, websites and radio stations that you don't need mainstream media anyway. Second of all, at best the mainstream media's selection of metal bands is usually better suited to introducing casuals to metal in the first place than it is for people who are already fans trying to discover new bands.
Exactly
" Five feet tall?" Not at all. The average height of a Norse male during the Viking period was about 5 ft 8 to 5ft 9! I've seen Viking skeletons at the museum I worked at that were 5 ft 10 and another 6ft 1. Harald Hardrada was about 6ft 6!
Gonna do some corrections on the Vikings, I recently did a research project on them and you’d be shocked at how well-off they were. They were really strategic in battle, they made sure that all of their people were cared for (for the most part), women were essentially equal to men, they self-governed themselves, and yes, they were very literate in runic language, though it wasn’t used for language, it was used for magic and sacred objects and whatnot. I was super surprised by how successful their society was, it explains why they lasted for so long. They definitely weren’t unintelligent!
Most runic stones left says stuff like "I raise this stone for my brother Harald who fell in *insert place*". I was about to add about the vikings too in the comments that most vikings were just farmers and trading was more common than raiding. The "classic" viking age just lasted for around 300 years though, am I wrong?
@@isakgamling3355 Correct, runes were used for magic and also funeral shit (also because of the magic properties, it was meant to ensure passing on and what not). Yeah, most Vikings were farmers and blacksmiths and what not before they started raiding, they only did it for extra wealth. And yeah around 300 years, which is pretty impressive for a group of people that everyone assumes died out insanely fast.
The Elder Futhark(runes) was used as a written language. Women were not seen as equal and vikings were not a single society, many tribes made up the viking world. Why do people just spread lies for no reason?
@@mutavhello6654 Elder Futhark was only one of many runic languages. While they did use runes for true writing, yes, most of the usage was for religious, magical, and spiritual purposes-the Vikings were devout Norse Pagans, a little bit of research tells you that.
Not perfectly equal, no, but women in their society had a lot more rights than a lot of women did back then. They could divorce, own property, sell and buy things from the market place, hell even some women were Vikings themselves. Just because their society did place a lot of value on gender roles doesn’t mean they valued women any less, they brutalized them just the same as they did any men, and like I said, were very ahead of their time.
And yes it’s not a secret that Vikings lived in tribes all over the place, everyone knows that. They still lived in societies. A group of people IS a society. Societies don’t need to be huge.
I’m pulling all of this from actual research done by legit historians.
That's actually only half true runes weren't used in magical practice and their actually isn't real concrete evidence that they were despite what myths and tales say. What we see now with runes is recreation especially amongst the Wiccans and tarot users. Lol hard pill to swallow alot of what we know about Nordic culture isn't all true because their culture changed so much during the Vikings age and even before the Viking age it was hard to know what was practiced and how because....it just wasn't recorded
Hard to swallow pill, for Metal to be mainstream, they have to be part of pop culture and be rock stars.
I don't care for metal being mainstream thankfully
I saw another YT video to that effect (it was one of those videos that talked about nu-metal's history iirc)!
I mean, we had that in the 80's with the glam metal shit and it was pretty lame. A band like Napalm Death has aged but they are still cool and true to themselves. On the other hand, Axl Rose and the guys in Motley Crue embarrass themselves on a daily basis just by existing. Who wants metal to be mainstream again?
Metal does not need to be mainstream.
The fact that metal will never get mainstream attention in the scope it had years ago again is fucking amazing. Just Stranger things having some metalhead character did irreparable damage to the metal scene by generating lot's of cringy posers that just saw the show and want to look like that character now. Imagine an entire mainstream show like that. The metal scene would be fucked. In my opinion, mainstream metal is just not needed anymore. It's well known enough that people that are really interested will find metal sooner or later and those who aren't thankfully won't. I'd be more than happy with a small, but strong scene
I meeeaaaan... there is a difference between having some fellow professionals make suggestions or essentially proof read your work and having a corporation hire a song writer to write a pop song and have your latest dancing monkey project perform it. I think it's very unreasonable to expect every artist to do everything from writing lyrics to producing and thus lump the whole spectrum together.
Big fan of Cradle of Filth and I love the new album. Always happy to see other metalheads acknowledge them
I love Cradle of Filth and I am a fan of lots of metal. I never really got the hate for them. Their discography is very solid overall

Always wanted to meet Dani - to thank him for (indirectly) getting me thrown into an Australian jail 20 years ago. I got off a plane wearing the bands 'Jesus is a cunt' shirt, and a bunch of people, including airport security, got offended. It didn't help that the front of the shirt had a picture of a nun fingering herself. The worst part about it is that i didn't get my shirt back when I got released.
@@waldemarkrieg7031 that's fair!
a pill that some people find hard to swallow for no reason is that no metal genre is inherently better or superior than anything else. you aren't "more metal" than anyone else for liking (or not liking) black/doom/sdbm/heavy/hair/nu/thrash or any other genre. let people like things
The only reason I disagree with the Metal in TV and Media thing is because I feel that's more of an American/Canadian thing, in Sweden I know there's been a decent amount of either documentaries and such airing on major channels for us. So that's the only thing I'm not quite agreed on, and in radio especially.
We have Metal songs playing on the radio station where I live all the time, and also on bigger radio sometimes as well be it cut up versions of Metallica on the biggest ones but it still does happen.
Though I feel it's also what I basically said, it's kind of a Swedish thing, we never really stopped liking Metal over here, and it's not entirely related because this is more touching on the "underground" stuff but the local scene feels the strongest it's ever been in terms of Metalhead brotherhood. At least that's what I've felt going to shows, and also seeing shows here and there on videos that I didn't go to that were either sold out or packed.
Shadow of Intent is an exemple of a not underground band that still isn't in any music label and they fully right their own songs and they do it better than most of the labeled band
I think that last one was an awesome one to end on. The hard-to-swallow I think people need to deal with is the high likelihood that you may be the only one that is openly into metal for a fair way. Lots of people hide it until it's a concert or until you do it first.
Why do people hide it?
@@mariazeredo6657 because most people listen to other genres.
@@Dark_Lord_Mr_B I know but it doesn't make sense to me that someone would intencionaly hide their music taste just because most people listen to something else
@@mariazeredo6657 imagine a non metal head seeing a guy in a leather jacket with patches all over, dressed all aggressively. Most people want to fit in. It's basic psychology.
@@Dark_Lord_Mr_B you could be a metalhead and not dress the part only talk about the music you like. But even if someone that dresses the way you described and people assumed negative stuff about them because of that, than those people are not worth befriending or getting to know in the first place. In an enviroment with dress code like work or a wedding, etc, I understand, but in a typical social setting you shouldn't have to conform. I know some people are insecure but still.
It was around this time a decade ago I started listening to metal. I was really into electronicore (I've seen the light and acknowledge it as watered-down industrial metal, but we all gotta start somewhere, right?) I didn't even I consider myself a metalhead until this year and my definition of metal is still broader than a lot of metalheads'.
I do speak from experience: if normies aren't into metal, don't try to bend em to your will; they're best left the fuck alone. I'm realizing that I did it because I wanted others to feel what I was feeling.
I really could've used a lot of your advise when I was first getting into metal
Oh the Blackmetalwerewolf is still alive. I agree with all this topics. I personally have respect for Bob Daisley, Desmond Child or Vini Poncia for having written most of the hits for Ozzy Osbourne and KISS in the 70's and 80's, yes they didn't write most of their songs at that time.
** The plagiarism is a big "Hard to Swallow Pill" in Metal: here on UA-cam there are a lot of videos on the subject. The Iron Maiden thing is that they "borrow" (maybe "steal" depends on how you wanna see it) some riffs from Beckett, Wishbone Ash, Riot, and some others. (Ruthless Metal on his channel have been made a few interesting videos about that.)
Midian is also a badass CoF album. Doug Bradley narrates portions of the album and it's based upon Clive Barker's Nightbreed. I've played it for people who hate the band and I've changed some people's minds.
Metal has a better shot at breaking into the mainstream through artistic mediums. I'm writing a dark fantasy novel where the main character and her adoptive sister are die-hard metal fans. To my knowledge, it hasn't happened yet because not many people are trying. I would absolutely support it if more people came up with ideas like that.
agreed. First video I have seen and you made some very good points. subscribed.
A hard pill to swallow imo is that metal shows tend to smell awful. Only at a metal show can I find myself surrounded by sweaty men in sleeveless shirts and vests who have forgotten that deodorant exists. It's not all the time but I'll tell you I haven't experienced this issue at the many pop/rap, pop-punk, ska, and other underground indie shows i've been to. Ik, the pit gets hot and sweaty but a shower and a little deodorant/cologne before/after hitting the pit doesn't hurt and goes a long way.
Ewww sounds horrible, the best black metal bands/artists (imo) don’t play live shows anyway. Even less need to go out and interact with people = perfect 🖤
@@elisabethbetts2669 that is a pathetic and boring existence. Get a life.
Bro I subscribed as soon as I heard your intro man that's it is badass signing for real and I'm going to listen to you a video bro
"bro"? Normie poser....
Haven't seen you in while, dude, love the new theme riff 🤘
Great video i am glad i stumbled upon it this morning 🤘
I can hear Fade to Black in the background as you speak. But hey, that’s life, it’s all good. We have heavy metal still
And agreement on the Cradle of Filth album, that one is pretty epic
As I’ve gotten older and have slowly started to fall out of love for Metal in favor of Hardcore and Punk I’ve slowly started to have a weird love/hate relationship with Metal and Metalheads.
Metalheads as a community have been a double edged sword. I’ve met some that were absolutely insufferable and made me incredibly embarrassed to ever have called myself a Metalhead, always trying to argue that terrible bands were so much better then bands who actually know how to play their music, among other incredibly childish shit.
On the other hand, I’ve jammed with Metal musicians who have some of the most open minds and some of the tightest control of their instruments that I’ve ever seen. These guys were able to play circles over any of those shitty bands the insufferable part of the community that I mentioned previously constantly try to shove down people’s throats, and it was always really fun to play some really heavy stuff with those guys. We wound up playing a lot of super aggro music that would make any Groove Metal band proud lol
Majority of metal fans have mental issues
Metal may be somewhat dead commercially its still insanely popular.
I agree about Metal music in Tv shows and movies, I wish there were more movies about local metal scenes or a whole cast being metalheads but the two closest things to that are the movies Verlierer and Green Room
I used to watch LOUD on much music back in the late 90s right up until ended and the Much Loud channel became available. Any time I watched Much Loud they were usually playing mainstream rock and very little metal so I didn't bother watching, until a couple of years ago I discovered Metal At Midnight and haven't missed an episode since! Admittedly it's not as good as old school LOUD but I'm just glad that it's on!
I had missed that thing about Iron Maiden and looked it up and while you were correct they couldnt play it the reason was not because of Martin Birch but because of a guy named Brian Ingham from the band Beckett. The reason was Steve used parts of the lyrics from one of Becketts songs for Hallowed be thy name as well as The nomad.
Martin Birch was the producer for Number of the Beast and I can assure you he never sued the band for Hallowed Be Thy Name 😂😂😂
Existence is Futile is a really great album. Did not listen a lot to CoF in the past years but this album is a must listen
I always considered Deathklok to be kind of a joke band. Popular among people who don’t really listen to metal, at least that was my experience around the time the show was popular
Still like them though
Steel Panther is another great joke band! 🤣🤣🤣
True although they do have at least a few sick songs like Crush the Industry and Starved
@@rogerwalker2224 bloodlines is super badass too
@@pilkpepsimilkk hell yeah
excellent work, sir. you are wise. my hard to swallow metal pill has been that metal is so widely accepted in the 2000s... (back in the 80s and 90s metal appalled normal people and was viewed as pure evil). that being said, your point that metal is still quite underground did comfort me. and all this said, i actually am glad the world at large now honors metal. let's admit: it is the best music (after bach and beethoven). thank you for your charming and intelligent work.
Great points man. Sick recommendation too
For me would be never experiencing tape trading as it happened in the 80s and 90s. Having grown up with the i ternet has advantages for discovering metal dont get me wrong. But tape trading just sounds like a world wide all hands on deck effort that really took the genre to the next level. Just gotta appreciate the ingenuity and persistance of fans during that period.
I thought it said How to swallow pills, but I'll watch anyway.
Hardest pill for me to swallow is that Wintersun is probably never gonna drop Time II and I will likely never hear The Way of the Fire outside of those few live recordings
Another banger video
I love your videos 🤘🏻
There were news about a new Metalocalypse movie called "Army of the doomstar" like three weeks ago, also it's coming out this year, it seems. Plus a new Dethklok album+tour were also announced at the same time.
Pill I think quite a few metalheads (at in my country) really should swallow, is the fact that the festivals will book bands as headliners, not based on how long they have been around already or how good YOU think they are, but solely on the crowds they managed to attract. And you might find them "Too soft and not-metal enough" (or also a beautiful one: "Too commercial", because yes, your bands don't want to make money, every band is commercial... One is more mainstream than others, sure, but than again, that attracts more people and doesn't mean they are lesser musicians per ce), a lot of other people might love them and will pay good money to see them, people who might even listen to a few of the same bands as you but are also very open to other subgenres and bands. A prime example was the reaction on social media when Alcatraz Open Air (Belgian Metal Festival) announced Electric Callboy as their third and final headliner this year. And I understand, their happy techno-infused metalcore isn't for anyone and you don't have to like them but in itself, it is a stupid question if you look at the crowds they attracted the previous year. I was there (I am a fan of the band) and when I looked around, there were people as far as the eye could see and from the pictures that surfaced later, it is safe to say that it was amongst the largest crowds any band attracted that day. They sold out two shows in Belgium, two days in a row and their Arena show this year was also pretty packed.
Same with Sabaton (another band I enjoy, though I have taken a break from them to explore other bands). They get constant shit, with people complaining why are they headliners? Because they sell out venues! Because amongst metalbands they are popular and there are plenty of popular bands that attract large crowds, that I don't like either (or more accurate, don't feel much for) but I get why they are programmed on such prominent stages, while bands I believe deserve to be bigger, aren't given such honors (yet, Electric Callboy was also an obscure band until a few years ago. A lot of people think they are young, just a few years in business, yet they have been formed in 2010, so over a decade old.) In regards to Sabaton, one of my friends is one of the owners of a small venue who organizes concerts and small indoor festivals and he has blatantly stated: "I'm not really a fan of their music but I could put them on my stage, I wouldn't hestitate. That's a sold out show no doubt". And that, even in metal is still important. There are bills that have to be paid and it are the popular names that attract people to discover the smaller names. Yesterday, I went and saw Ne Obliviscaris, fantastic band from Australia but they are a niche band and won't attract large crowds. Would I love them as a festival headliner? Definitely! But they played in a small venue for a reason, they aren't big.
Headbangers ball is what started me music journey I miss the old days
Great points brother
I remember back in the day when Much Loud was actually a show segment and not just some dumping ground channel for rock affiliated music videos. Times definitely have changed when it comes metal.
I have grown to love Carpathian Forest. " found them for covering All my friends are dead.
Hardcore songwriting elements, when used well, add a lot of fun to metal music
My hardest to swallow pill as a metal head was this really big vitamin pill I took while I had covid, I coughed it up twice before I was able to get it down
Except Darkthrone. Darkthrone writes their own stuff. But, Peaceville has just always been cool about that.
that Carpathian Forest flag on the top left looks killer dude, where'd you get it?
Back in the day being a Rockstar was just about everyone's dream. Being as that's far from the case now....goes to show how right u are. Metal and mainstream just isn't a thing. Most recent cases being hair metal , grunge, and the last time it was being nu Metal. And damn that was a while ago
If you wanna be become a rock star better learn how to rap or make pop music lol. Even if it's combined with your rock-based music. Its sad but pretty much reality.
@@erikstorm8935Perhaps artists like Poppy can show the way forward!
Cradle Of Filth is an amazing band! i love the album! got on vinyl too!
Aye I love temple of void! Sick shirt!
Self-realization I've recently come to terms with:
I have become the old man at local death metal shows and none of the 20 somethings that I corner between bands playing give a shit that I saw (insert band name) on the (insert tour) after the (insert album) came out.
💊💨💨💨💨💨💨💨
Portal's entire catlogue was written by Cher. I couldn't believe it either.
Hardest for me is definitely how Death will probably never get the recognition they deserve
what are u talking about lol they're one of the most beloved and well known death metal bands ever
I am so happy but also feel like sorta like a elder metal head because I am 34 and got to experience the last good years of MTV when metal was still being played surprisingly and also got to read a magazine such as Metal Edge which helped me discover even more bands aside the ones I discovered through burnt cds friends pass onto me in the 00's👌🏻🥳💓
On the topic of bands not writing 100% of their music, while definitely true, I’d be shocked if there wasn’t another hand in the kitchen, we can at least take solace in the idea that for the most part the bands are the ones that are coming up with the large majority of their music in quite a few instances. That being said, yes, there are definitely producers that are helping in the actual writing process of songs along with the editing.
bro thanks for spitting facts
A hard to swallow pill for me is the entire concept of an "album" might be becoming obsolete. Since physical media is all but obsolete already, there's not as much reason for bands to release an entire album when they can just release a new single every couple months onto the music streaming services. Shawn Crahan of Slipknot has said as much, but I've heard the same from members of much smaller bands. I personally like the concept of having a full-length album, however. That's practically the only way I listen to music, by listening to the entire album all the way through, so the idea of having a bunch of odds-and-ends singles is not so appealing.
I do think that it's obsolete in many cases, but honestly I think a lot of metalheads hold a bit more value in things like albums so I don't see it going away in the metal scene. Especially as a lot of metal bands sell a lot of vinyl
Albums as a whole won't go away,i've seen the "Vinyl will die soon" fad at the end of the 90s and yet People still release LPs so don't worry
And vinyl has made a comeback in the last ten years as well! 😂😂😂
You got the Iron Maiden thing wrong.
It wasn't the producer.
Steve had lifted some of the lyrics of the song from a band called Becket.
👍
My hardest pill to swallow is that we won’t ever get another Death album. Chuck really is gone. RIP Evil Chuck.
We never saw that 2nd Control Denied album 😢
Hard to swallow for some younger metalheads is that you are not "cool" or "special" just for liking metal or heavier sounding music in general than what the mainstream audience listens to. And almost nobody will care when you tell them that.
hardest pill to swallow seems to be that consuming media is not a replacement for a personality
In Belgium we do have some metal radio shows.
Hey man, I don’t know if we are the same age ( I’m 35), but you are 100% correct. Metal reached its “extremity” in the early 90’s, and every thing has been done already. It is what it is.
The whole Viking thing is overly romanticized, and still to this day most “Viking metal” people know about are just posers. 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
Hey man just wanted to let you know Eddie Trunk and Don and Jim , the guys from the metal show are starting up something similar here on UA-cam, I forgot the name , it’s not TMS but they did release the test episode with more to come
The intro theme is sick where can I find the whole thing???
Another hard pill for metalheads to swallow is that Pantera sucks.
Great video. Im still trying to figure out what your tats are. 🤔
You are awesome I love all metal
People look at me don't know and trip out when they find out I'm a metalhead. Some people may have it on them but don't have it in them.
Another Hard-to-swallow-pill for all of us : Beautiful and single Metal-Girls are as many as unicorns. You will never have one dude. Good Night :)
There are plenty man, not hard to find too.
I've been with a few already and am now. They may not always have the exact same taste in music you do though. That matters little to me personally anyway.
My wife listens to pop and I like brutal death metal. Music taste has nothing to do with a good relationship.
@@PrimitiveBeast it's not necessary, but a shared passion for music does help.
Yeah, I'm single but ugly as hell ~
I mean tiktok is starting to ruin the underground but I just don't think it's the best as most people just hear 60 second clips and then claim they're a huge Cannibal Corpse fan and it's like Hammer Smashed face.
Yupp. Tiktok is ruining everything. Got a bunch of young people claiming to like death/black metal for shock entertainment and style. Those people will flock onto something else, give it a year.
That’s actually not what I think about then I think about Vikings but we are probably more educated in the north😊and yes Vikings were really cool, their why of trade, travel and making weapons are some of the reason we still learn about them. And they did have healthy food for that time, there are many books about it. Unfortunately many Americans especially wants to make the Viking out to be like the things you described.
Vikings would also probably not be a fans of heavy metal had they survived
@@devilinthedarkness4830 What music do you think they would be fan of , Taylor Swift?

Dethklok coming back with a movie is awesome news! At least, where I live, you can find two XM metal radio stations: Liquid Metal & Ozzy's Boneyard.
You got the Hallowed Be Thy Name thing wrong. Basically, Steve straight up stole some lyrics from the song Life's Shadow by this 70s prog band called Beckett so the songwriter sued Maiden.
👍
Didn't he ask for permission?
@@thatonemetalhead_666 I really doubt it lol. Bands ripped off other bands all the time back in the day. Hell, they continue to do so. It's not inherently a bad thing.
The mainstream metal that gets written by producers is the more dull type of metall, all the good stuff are not producer written
a local radio station sometimes plays helloween and avantasia and thats the hardest metal i have ever heard from a radio station
I just stumbled across this video and all I want to know is, what’s the name of the band on your shirt?
Great video!!!
It will surprise you how many people could read during medieval ages. I recommend watching Literacy and medieval misconceptions videos made by Shadiversity, great channel
He seriously called off nearly every wrong stereotype about the times. A lot of stuff like that has been turned around over time due to new archaeological discoveries. It's more nuanced than that. It really depended on the culture and where one lived. "Vikings" actually ate well and were very big on hygiene. Some of the so-called "rapes" were the women actually throwing themselves at "viking" men because they took better care of themselves and looked better overall. Also, our ancestors weren't stupid. Modern people like to think themselves more intelligent but try navigating the land and seas like they did back then and be able to make it to your destination and back home with no problems; or just even the stuff to take care of day to day survival. Many would today would not be able to do that. Instead of taking the luxuries we have today to make time and do things do better ourselves, many humans squander the potential to improve further. Some seem to be evolving in reverse.
@@kalinora3901 such an awesome comment. A true person of culture!!!
Dethklok changed my life in highschool...I always wondered if Adult Swim would come back to the concept, being it was so successful back then.
Is there a discrepancy between "corpse paint" and "skull paint" ? I posted a tiktok that did big numbers of me putting on my face paint for a band dress rehearsal. I got a lot of hate comments on it from people saying that "it wasn't corpse paint."
The inspiration for my stage outfit comes from performers like King Diamond, Alice Cooper, the Misfits, as well as Dead from Mayhem - the whole outfit design is basically a metalhead skeleton, which is why I went for a more literal Skull design with the face paint.
I can only assume the hate was coming from the prejudice against the band Ghost in the elitist/gatekeepy circles and the general association skull face paint with the Papa Emeritus character. Or that the skull design is more commonly used in horror punk and so there is a pedantic line crossed with that, making it 'skull paint' not 'corpse paint'.
Would love to hear your thoughts on this!
