MTDN -Ep12 | Road America Track Day 6-7-2021 with Sportbike Track Time (Novice, obviously)

  • I rode the 2001 SV650S with Sportbike Track Time at Road America, and I had an absolute blast. I can't wait to make it out there again. I learned a lot about where my deficiencies are, and I was also able to overcome a few mental barriers. I clearly need to be carrying far more speed through corners, and I need to be getting my body off of the bike a lot further--especially in right-handed turns. I wish I could get right back out there and try to improve, but that's just not how it works. Looking forward to getting back.

    Harley rider here, picked up a 2020 z900 for a 2nd bike and looking at taking it here (only an hour from my house) looks like a blast but at the same time extremely terrifying!!!

      It's definitely a blast, and the z900 would definitely be in its element out there! I recommend giving it a shot sometime--I wish I would have done it sooner. If you're apprehensive about the speed and everything, Blackhawk Farms in South Beloit, IL is a little less daunting for a first track day. But I think most people would be fine riding at either. Motovid brings the yellow novice group up to speed pretty gradually and spend more time getting new people acquainted to track riding than the other orgs I've ridden with, so they may be the best option if you want to jump in.

      I'm not so sure it was positive so much as bewilderment that somebody would string together that mess, hahaha. I will tell you though, every single component has a hard tether to the bike. So if it did go down in a crash or something, every piece would go with the frame and I wouldn't have the guilt of someone going through, hitting a piece of it at speed, and crashing their own bike.

      I cracked up when I realized I'd caught the "NoPro" and "NoGo" comments from you. I told you--watching back your riding footage is a double-edged sword. I go through a few different stages.
      1. Excitement-Look, that's me on a motorcycle on a track! This is sweet!
      2. Holy cow. Look at how terrible my positioning, speed, braking, and everything else is. This is embarrassing. I should delete this, so the world can't see how bad I am.
      3. Alright, all those deficiencies are things I can work on and get better at. I held my own even with all those issues. Might as well accept them, study them, learn from them, and do better next time.

      I was actually thinking about that body position device you've got. If you ever get that thing working really well and sturdy... that would be a huge benefit to newbie jamokes like me that are struggling with foot position and seat position (both how far back AND off to the side one should be).

      @@matttriestodothings i got it beefed up to 2" steel and put adjustable legs on the bottom so it doesnt rock at all anymore.
      still looks like ass and i still need to do something with the cables to make it smoother.
      as far as seat/foot/hips/etc. i could do a video of how I do it, BUT that wont help since YOUR body mechanics and ergos will be slightly different. you can practice with your bike on stands though to get a decent feel for it. (or in a parking lot).
      main goals: inside foot toes on the peg (think like trying to pick up a pen using your toes), pivoted heel up (which opens up your hips).
      outside foot driving your outside knee into the tank.
      butt slid back but just to the point where you have room to pivot your hips
      hips, shoulders, head, pointed in the same direction.
      at most the crack of your ass on the lip of the seat. one buttcheek off is enough. more than one is too much.
      torso "out" or "roll around the tank" depending on ergos/etc. shoulders should be at least as over as the butt if not more. (more is better)

      aside from blatant errors (like dragging toes) really great bp is just... style points. it's possible to ride bolt upright all the way into the slower side of advanced group. yes it helps the bike, yes it looks better, but vision, lines, braking/trailbraking, throttle control will take you much further than being brilliant at bp and shit at the rest of them

    If you have a wheel choke, or rear stand, bring it to the track. Reason you want to tie up the kickstand, if for any odd reason it happens to fail. It's going to end up being a bad time if it comes down while in a turn. Same reason why most orgs make you tie up your rear pegs so if you go down they don't go through your leg. And they check the suit just to make sure it's up to par and has no holes/rips. Just a safety thing to keep you safe while out there. If you decide to race, CCS pretty much have those same requirements. And no matter what org you ride with, never be afraid to approach a staff member for help, or questions. That's what they are there for, to help you get better. And help you with any issues you have.
    Make sure you are up on the ball of your feet on the pegs.

      I do have a wheel chock I bought specifically because of the tying up the kickstand--I was afraid I'd drop the bike trying to get off and use the rear stands. I totally get why motovid has you tie up the kickstand and tech through with all gear on. I was surprised to find it wasn't a necessity at STT.
      I certainly need to stop being afraid of asking dumb questions when I'm there. First couple times were just a straight up whirlwind of brain motions at the track. Now that some things are starting to make sense, I'll knockoff the shyness (lol).

      @@matttriestodothings the rear stand can be intimidating at times, especially when you're tired on a hot day haha. If you have one, just practice using it at home. Will make it easier.
      And yeah! It's normal. That's the mistake people make thinking that you can't approach the coaches. A majority of them will be more than happy to answer every single question you have.

    I was wondering how much time for session you where getting. Up there it’s never enough. We used to get about 6 to 8 laps in of practice then right to racing. And that would be in the morning so the track was never that hot. Sometimes in the spring it would still be snowing

      Were the races around 6-8 laps as well? I think the Twins Cup race was either 8-10 laps this weekend, and the Supersport race was 12 laps with MotoAmerica. I have no familiarity at all with different racing orgs--I just see some of the CCS races tend to last around ~10 minutes or so at Blackhawk, so I'm guessing.
      This was a hot one for sure. Hottest I've ever been out. We were in the lower 90s for a while, but that cloud cover for the afternoon made it not that big of a deal. I definitely did not hydrate well enough despite the fact I was drinking between 1-1.5 bottles of water/coconut water/gatorade between sessions.
      Blackhawk earlier this year only a few weeks ago it was 31°F and frost on the ground when I showed up. I was probably over-hydrating then as I was having to pee twice between sessions! Everything is a learning experience at the track for me, apparently. Even how to properly feed myself and use the bathroom, hah.

      @@matttriestodothings the sprint races were 4 laps and 8 at Blackhawk farms. The gt races were 30 minutes as many laps as you could get in.

      Hah, thanks! It was one of those things where I wasn't expecting it. I just felt a little kiss on turn 6 and then the next lap as well in turn 8. Both left-handers.
      I realize it doesn't mean a whole lot, but it at least assured me that I was leaning over as far as I *thought* I was leaning. And now I don't have to have that little stupid thought taunting my ego anymore. And just work on the things that matter.

      @@matttriestodothings racing minis the saying is "find the ground before the ground finds you". So same with big bikes. First order of business in the first session when there's grip (some morning sessions are a little slidey) is to force my knee to the ground (either with bad lines or with cornerspeed) to remind myself where the hell the ground is

    why even bother w the rear brake on track? not particularly necessary (edit: nm, you explained later)

      It's just a comfort an muscle memory thing I think. It's tough to practice hard deceleration on the street, with downshifting, counting gears, and trying to line up the speed for a corner. I can do each of those things individually just fine, but on the track it's just been a bit overwhelming so when I focus completely on not touching the rear brake at all getting ready for a right turn, my brain is thinking something is different and I have to devote brainpower to telling my left foot to downshift instead of it just happening naturally. This results in me shaving off a lot more speed for right-handed corners than I should be.
      I'm certain I can break the mindset. I've got a full weekend later July at Blackhawk which is just right turn after right turn. That whole first day I'm just going to work on body positioning the right handed turns and not touching that rear brake. I'll worry about pace the second day.

      @@matttriestodothings go find a parking lot and throw a backpack down. 2nd into 1st is fine. or just leave in 2nd. crank your head over and turn the bike. just do it until you have erased the "weird" feeling.

      They're both very good. STT splits you off into small groups and pairs you with a control rider for the day--I think that might be a little more beneficial since it encourages more conversation with a single expert. Both organizations have extremely helpful CR's though.
      Realistically, I really need to sign up for an actual riding class next year though.
