Mannnnnnnnnnn....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a complete pain in the arse. In this day and age nobody can come up with a simple plug and play update
Excellent video. I found it interesting which wasnt mentioned in the video in that the manual said it would reset all the memory channels. Almost had a heart attack because I didnt see it until after I updated it. Well surprise my memory channels are not erased but I've only updated the main so far. I will backup my memory channels before doing the rest. I wonder which firmware update of the 3 wipes your memory channels. I also noticed Yaesu seems to not have made available the release notes to the firmware update so I have no idea what was fixed or changed. Not cool.
You're the man Cap'n.... Love your well-presented video clips. I wonder if you partially generate the thotts during flight layovers? We worked on FT8 last week on 15 I think - maybe it was 40.. I live approx 3 hours south of you - wife has dementia otherwise I WOULD DRIVE UP THERE TO VISIT YOU FOR 10 MIN. I am close to buying a 43' zerofive. I hope you got some satisfaction from the police looksee.... I wonder if you got your mount pipe at lowes or Home Depot? what diam and length 5' ?? cheers and we love your you tube clips and keeping hams tuned in... I wonder how you have the time --- envy your energy... long may you run... cheers from Mims FL. K4BEW
Hello Cal, nice to make contact with your on 15m. You'll like the Zero Five Antenna. I love both the 43' and 27'. The pipe that I used was from Lowes. It's a 10' section galvanized steel water pipe. I believe the diameter is 1.5" I also bought a cap to cover the top of the pipe. You will need to cut the pipe in half with a hacksaw. 73's for now!
If you loose power while upgrading, it will render your transceiver unsuseable. Now, depending on where you live: Do you consider a fresh, trusty battery more reliable over the mains power or vice versa ? Can you get your hands on an uninterruptable power supply which would buffer your pc running the upgrade software as well as the radio ? than that would be the perfect solution. Use the power method you have available *and* you trust most.
Great Video. I appreciate your efforts and time. I do have a Couple of questions, if you have the time. I just picked up a 991A I'm pretty excited about it, just waiting on a few things to come in. My questions are, 1. Will this driver work on a PC with USB 3.0 interfaces? I see in the requirements or Environment, it list USB 1.0 and 2.0, no 3.0? My PC has Windows 10, but its just new enough that it only has USB 3.0, the ports may support 2.0, but not sure how this driver will react... 2. On Page it, it shows 2 virtual COM ports (Numbers not important), but they are called Standard COM Port: and Enhanced COM Port, each has it uses... I just want to make sure I'm looking at them right. Standard, Would be for using/running one of the remote control software apps? Enhanced, Would typically be for be for Upgrading the (4) Firm wares and using a Config Software like RT Systems??? Is my understanding of those correct? I over analyze sometimes, but I want to make sure I'm correct and not confused or backwards. Thanks again for your time and assistance with this...
Still waiting for yaesus update on this radio to fix a big bug if you are a user of VOX operation like myself. That is while operating voice via VOX many settings do not function. Example setup your TX audio EQ have it enabled and while monitoring your tx audio with VOX in use and then MOX or PTT you will clearly hear flat non EQ’d tx audio under VOX and then your wonderful EQ’d tx audio while keying radio without VOX. I reported this to Yaesu and they wrote me after testing and confirming this is a bug. Still waiting.
Excellent. My radio is just over a year old and already has these firmware updates. Is there a document that shows you WHY you need to update the firmware? Just the 60M / 5MHz band? Thank you Captain for the high-quality video. 73 de NØGFT
I'd say, if your happy with the current 991A don't bother with the firmware update. This is what I found with the latest firmware update from 6/2020. www.yaesu.com/indexVS.cfm?cmd=DisplayProducts&ProdCatID=102&encProdID=490C4A71118AD0F4E825E89D821B73BB&DivisionID=65&isArchived=0 Click the firmware information.
@@DarrenN4VFR You should always update your firmware. If not, you may not be able to communicate with newer ones that come from the factory already instilled.
Darren were you using windows 10 ? I am having problems with Win 11. The USB driver is installed and says its working however it fails to write to the radio.
I would avoid an emulator in any case. You want the most stable scenario you can get your hands on - not some stacked api solution with latencies etc., or an scenario that uncommon that you would not expect YAESU to have it tested. Simply borrow a windows notebook with an intact battery that is plugged in the power supply additionally, it does not need to be the very newest one.
No, I have the 991A as a spare and will use it for portable operations and POTA if I ever have time. I'm busy balancing family, work, and UA-cam video. 73's and Merry Christmas!

Please, I have a question, why use battery instead of power supply for the update ?

Are you running a PC emulator there? Guessing it's not possible on a mac without an emulator?
You may see my iMac in the video however, I'm using a PC to download the firmware and install it on a SF card.

Hello po... If i will buy it today you think it's already updated? Thank you....
Perhaps the firmware is already up to date if you buy a new 991A.
Thank you ... End of march or early april 2022 got a reservation already of YAESU FT991A....

I'm sorry, I didn't have any memories saved from the start of the firmware update.
