I have a Yaesu FT-991a and I dearly love it! I purchased it for the ability to do 2 meter sideband as we have a 2 meter sideband net on Wed. nights. I also got some really nice rails to protect the front end. Every time you put your hand in front of the radio the camera goes out of focus. Cheers & 73 from K9POW in eastern TN

I could still kick myself for selling my FT-897d , also I found out that I can't go without my FT-817/818 ( owned one since they were released. ) I'd sell one and would instantly regret it. My wife gifted me my FT-818 a few years ago because she missed sitting at our picnic table listening to the bands on a warm summer evening. I sold my 897d for my icom ic-7000 all because I was mostly a digital operator, and I got frustrated by AGC "pumping" whilst running PSK and CW and the ic-7000 has IF DSP rather than ADSP , but the ic-7k doesn't like any voltage drop maybe +/-5% where the ft-897d can handle much more variations. The ic-7k is fine mobile but a pack radio-it isn't, unless it's running a voltage conditioner, but it's still a power-hungry rig. The 817/8 will happily run 8 volts up to 15 volts .

Thanks for the video Chuck. Yaesu knows about the lack of 2m and 70cm in their newer radios. Because we bring it up to them frequently. The 710 is a great rig. I have the FTDX-10 as my shack radio. It is the best I have ever owned. The price of the 710 is best value as an entry HF right in my opinion. I paid $899 for my FT-857d a few years ago. This radio is far superior to that one.

    Hi,
When I was looking for a new tranciever I looked at the 991A. Because I didn't need UHF/VHF I went for the Yaesu FTDX10 when it had only been on the market about three months. After the radio development a fault and was repaired at Yaesu UK and over a year to get it set up how I wanted it, I'm very happy with it. Your FT710 seems comparable in performance to the FTDX10.
    Great video.
Enjoy your new set. David M0DUU

I've used a friend's 991A in both field and home locations and it's a good radio. When the FT-710 went on sale a few years ago, I made a decision to get one based on it's high rank in the Sherwood ratings. I've used the rig in all modes and it really shines in CW due to it's sensitivity and selectivity. I've since added an Icom 7610 to the shack and it's amazing but the FT-710 still gets a lot of work! 73 DE WA5RR

I have the FT DX 10. I am thinking of getting a 991A down the road, but you make a good point, they might come out with a newer version. Not to replace my radio but for the 2m/70cm, and the HF back up capabilities. I was worried about clicking on this, most videos about Yaesu products seem to be by Icom fan boys, who buy a Yaesu to bash them. Thanks for not being that guy. Personally I'd have saved the 100bucks for some good headphones the AESS isn't worth lugging the speaker round for POTA work, I don't even plug it in on my desk half the time. Maybe if it had the power supply build in it like a certain more expensive rig from the same company it would earn its desk space more frequently. This was a very interesting video. Thank you for the upload.
A bit of background: I currently have the FT-857D and the FT-897D (inspired acquisition influenced by @TheTechPrepper). I want to permanently mount the 857D in my truck, and use the 897D in my bedroom. For the shack, I want to get the FT-DX10 for the base radio, and the FT-991A for POTA and all digital operations.
The FT-710 looks like a great rig for portable ops, and the price is right. That said, I am more inclined to secure the previously mentioned 991A and DX10 for their specific functionalities. Buuuuuuut, if you create more videos featuring the capabilities of the 710, I might rethink the allocation of my precious few ham radio bucks. 😉

The FTDX10 gets you a superhet front-end with three different roofing filters (and an optional 300Hz CW filter for four) which then feeds an SDR, and a bigger 5 inch screen. It also gets you kind of sucky ergonomics with buttons and knobs all clustered too close to the VFO and its outer multi-function ring (which you would have to get used to. This definitely isn't a radio for people with ADHD.)
The 710 gets you a pure SDR radio with a 4.3 inch screen, same size as the IC-7300, a somewhat smaller form factor, better ergonomics, and the Aess speaker thing where I guess both the internal and external speakers work at the same time with level adjustments for both which people say improves RX audio.
I have the DX10 and apart from the ergonomics which still slightly annoy me I really like it. It can pull signals out of a pretty high noise floor and its internal tuner can tune up to around 3.5:1 or higher SWR: not as good as a G90's 5:1 tuner but still better than most radios. Even with its minor annoyances I don't regret my purchase at all. Yet per Rob Sherwood the 710s are ranked right below the DX10s in his lab test results and I'm sure you couldn't even hear the differences between the two radios apart from the Aess thing, assuming the DSP noise reduction algorithms in the 710 are as good as the ones in the DX10s.

Nice overview Chuck. I'll be watching for more updates on how its working out for you. Seriously considering buying one. I am so frustrated at the RX on my 7300. Its a good radio. I like it and get a lot of compliments on the audio. But its seriously lacking in the RX department which is common on this radio. RX on my ft-891 blows it out of the water.

I have also gone through a series of QRP and HTs as well, going through various models. I have finally, after several years, simply settled on everything icom. For me, just makes sense. I have read the specs of those two radios, looked at the Sherwood assessment, and plenty of side to side videos of the 991A vs. 710 and I can’t get it how the 710 is much better overall receiver. Triple conversion superhet with roofing filters vs. SDR tech mainly refined for the HAM bands. IMHO, I think the 991a is keeper that will become more expensive overtime, particularly after its discontinuation. The FT710 will become a cheaper option as SDR technology advances. Just my two cents.

Sadly, your cam focused on the closer microphone or hand, and not the rig...but it loox quite good. On the fence between this and a 7300. My major ?? is what voltage will this rig work DOWN to - matters for battery ops. Neither my 7000 or 706 MkIIG do well below 12.0V, so I still use my trusty 817ND for field work... Also your opinion between this and the 7300. Tnx, Jerry wa2omu

I’ve used FTdx10 and 7300/705. Imho Icom user interface is easier but Yaesu is better receiver for isolating weak signals. Some prefer ease of use over performance in difficult signal environments. Often the harder the decision the less it matters.
