The HT's are great for sitting in the garage and hit a repeater about 15 mile away and talk all over the county. The AnyTone will be installed in the car, the rest are in my room. Great video. One item that is about the same importance to me is the availability of a AA battery holder. This is a great option to have during a long term power outage.
I have a President Lincoln II + and it is actually a very good radio. I do have mine expanded but you get to change modes so it can still be HAM bands only when you want it that way. I've made several contacts with this radio and always got great audio reports. It is in fact FCC certified however once you open it up that changes things obviously . I got mine when they were 249$ but they have since become more popular and went up in price. I highly recommend it. Lots of great features and a solid radio from President. 73.

But they don't have filtering, so.... by your definition, this radio isn't legit. The truth is that these were made to be modified into 11M radios and never designed to use on 10M
@@HamRadio2 We can agree to disagree to a certain extent. But validating a transceiver’s legitimacy based on it's ability to be modified sounds like a combination of opinion, bias, and possibly elitism...especially if your opinion is derrived from a place of hate for CB'ers (like most hams do for some odd reason). Here's a fun fact... EVERY ham radio I own has been modified. My old boat anchor Yeasu FT-101, my Yeasu FTM-7250D, my Galaxy DX98VHP, my Anytone 878 DMR handheld, and my ICOM 7300. And the mods for all of them were no harder or easier than modding my 10m Galaxy that you call a CB 😅. HAMS have been doing similar CAPS & MARS mods for years on "so-called" legit top brand ham radios. So we can debate filtering. But using "modifications" as a talking point is dead in the water sir. BTW, I appreciate the reply, your channel, and continue to put out great content. 👍
@@buccweet4904I use CB and have for a while, I have made several videos on it. Modifying a true HF radio is one thing, but these cheapy 10M radios that are actually made for 11M aren't nearly as well made
I noticed all you included was cheap, crappy, communist Chinese junk. Nothing from Icom, Kenwood, Yaesu. ALL of my actual radio equipment, capable of transmitting, was made by one of those three brands. None of them are capable of transmitting out of band. I have a bunch of MFJ (Mighty Fine Junk) stuff, some of it works fairly well, some of it is worthless. My favorite radio, and the pride of my collection, is an early '70s Yaesu FT-DX 560, which I bought in like new cosmetic condition, but it didn't work. I spent months rebuilding it, and now it works far better than any of the computerized radios. Amateur radio is dying, and these cheap communist radios are killing it. It may even be a communist Chinese attack on amateur radio. These radios may even have some kind of spy devices in them, and the whole country is flooded with them. I only paid $499 for my high quality Icom IC-718 100 watt HF radio a few years ago. Why would you pay close to that for Chinese junk? There are plenty of used ones for sale at very decent prices.
Not a fan of Android programming and/or accompanying GPS locating apps on the higher end China radios. The apps lock you into sketchy servers located in China. I can't imagine a China based APRS GPS locating server working out for me in any SHTF scenarios.
The tidradio h3 is definitely one to mention, it has a lot of features for such budget friendly radio. Bluetooth, usb-c charging, usb-c programming, compact, am band, and more.
Garbage compared to $20 quansheng uv k5. Way way way more features than that and is being added to daily by the fact you can load and flash custom firmware. Don't buy any radio that cannot be flashed in 2024.
@@rfcdgaf those will remain few and far between, unfortunately. As will the number of hams even capable of coding those special firmware loads. I never said anything bad about that rig.
My personal opinion is ALL mobile radios need to have a removable face plate so they can be easily installed into a vehicle that doesn't allow for the body of the radio to fit together for an install.
My first time seeing them today when I was looking up these radios, but apparently there’s quite a few repeaters available on Amazon. It’d be interesting to see a video on.
Great info, my question is Im stuck between either th anyone 878uv ii pro or the yeas 5DR or 3D Im looking for a ham that has analog, digital and FM. I live in South San Francisco and see that there seems to be a good amount of DMR will fusion work on the Yeas Fusion? Thanks, GRY
one thing about the baofeng HT`s i got 2 way back in the beginning and 2 within last year and now all but 2 battery is dead/shorted and will not charge HT`s are fine still. Battery's suck bad.. now i also have a wouxun KG-UV2D and the battery's are great but the HT is bricked and no supports for it any more not even chirp covers programing for it now. have to manually inter a freq to receive only so keep this in mind for long term.
Don't buy any baofengs in 2024. Quansheng uv k5 is where its at, firmware is flashable which is leading to a lot of custom firmwares with additional features. Not possible on any baofengs. For $20. This is the baofeng killer.
The 220 band is making a comeback in my area. You probably did not include the TYT TH-9000D Plus 1.25M Amateur Radio on your list because 220 is not the most popular band but it is a good radio, and one of the few full power monobanders for this band. Try it. You'll like it !
Quangsheng k6 for the win Ezgumer ride or die 😂 Look for more companies offering usb c batteries The socotran 8629 aka radtel .. batteries can be purchased and have usb c charging Exc am band receiver Gs5b is a great radio Its a great ht to use when camping as a campsite monitor radio Leave at campsite turned on plugged into a bigger battery w usb c Its like a portable base radio when camping
appreciate your time, As I am just studying to get my tech, Thus i have just started looking for a radio at the same time i want want one I an grow into and not end up having to buy another on in a few months. Also thank you for doing the you tube class I have been watching it as part of my studying.
The baofeng dm-1701 is a good one. I would reccomend doing the open gd77 mod on it right away though. It gets you into dmr in the under $100 price range, and with the open gd77 mod it's fairly easy to program with lots of contacts and channels. You probably won't find a cheaper handheld that can do digital mode and analog on both 2m and 440.
For my house I would buy a new or used 50w Japanese radio, but to carry in the car without a doubt a small anytone or btech from Amazon. Could you make a video of used movile radios? I have an ADI AR146 and it is really excellent for being a copy of Kenwood
Due to what's going on in the US lately, I'm interested in getting into ham. I'm unlicensed and needing something cheap to start with. Would the Tidradio TD-H8 be a decent choice? I'd like something that could pick up police and emergency channels. Any input would be great. Thanks for the video. Very informative.
Lots of police and emergency services have switched to encrypted or trunked radio systems, which are really designed not to be monitored. Some still have ham bands. This depends on your local area. You can likely find this information online if it is compatible with ham bands. That radio looks pretty great. Might be difficult to get started with something other than the normal radio people buy.. But it's probably not that different. Features are great. Bluetooth programming built in, extra channels, more features, 8 or 10 watts? Good bet.
I have the Anytone AT 5888UV2. It is a great radio. Also has removable head so you and have the control head on a mount and put the radio under the seat or in the back of your vehicle. I always get excellent audio reports and the receive is great. I run mine mobile. It also does out of the box work on GMRS. I know I know not "legal" but it is a nice alternative to the much more expensive Wouxon GMRS mobile radios.
I've been a ham since 1976, and I still use these cheap Chinese radios.. Being I'm retired and on a very fixed income, they're my ONLY choice for vhf/uhf radios. I use a Xiegu G90 for hf..
If you've been a Ham for that long, you should have some vintage radios that you bought a long time ago, that work better than any of these Chinese HTs.
@@HamRadio2I don't, and the reason I don't is the fact that I was inactive for close to 15 years and before becoming inactive, I sold all of the rigs I had. Now I'm retired on a very fixed budget and cheap chinese is pretty much IT now.
@@HamRadio2 I guess one of the kenwood/icom/yaesu models.. When I got back into the hobby I started with a Baofeng UV5R, was not impressed with it, but since I wanted to try out DMR, I'd heard good things about the Baofeng DR-1801, and bought one of those. Immediately replaced the f/w with OpenGD77. Great radio for both analog and DMR. Based on your review, I just ordered one of the Radtel RT-470X units, and should have it on Monday..
@@HamRadio2 sorry I must have been distracted momentarily. Edit: Rewatching. Yup I saw the uv-5r and tuned out a little too long :P Nothing against those in general just not interesting to me.
Expanding my horizons is why I'm here. Someone needs to make a video on "Here's a list of good handhelds that are not Baofeng." Cause just searching "most popular" "most sold" you still end up getting Baofeng mixed into the list. Price aside, what are people actually using that's well designed, little to no issues reported, connects to repeaters and transmits perfectly fine. What is the flagship (non-Baofeng) radio?
Top brand Ham Radios don't have the crappy front end rejection or cruddy receivers that the Lincoln radios have. It's not about hacking, it's about quality of build
kids live around the country. What hand held and/or mobile that in an emergency that we can still communicate with- licensing if needed is not a problem
For the BTECH 6X2, there's a good reason why there's a box on the product page that says it's a frequently returned item. Mine just quit working after about a week. Just refused to boot up. Sent it back.
I got my Anytone 878uvii plus for about $50 less than that Btech, NIB. Granted off ebay from a supplier there, so wouldn't have as good of a return policy as Amazon
Question looking for a radio to keep in case of a cell blackout. Would need to have communication about 200 miles. Not wanting to get a ham license. Is there anything that fits that bill? Thanks!!!
I've got the UV-K5 and UV-K6 and like them for what they are. Looks a lot less CCPish and is still cheap. Not stellar harmonics on VHF, but fine otherwise.
I’m partial to the Baofeng BF-F8HP. It was my first radio still works great and is a sturdy little radio. Needed an antenna upgrade. I can recommend the Nagoya 771. I live in the Pocono Mountains and have easily hit repeaters from outside the house that are 10 - 15 miles from my house. Great starter radio.
The Explorer QRZ-1 is my go-to. Not just because I got it no-charge through the New Ham program but also because it's factory-tuned by Gigaparts for excellent harmonics and solid legal operation. Durable and easy to use. I use it as my mobile. Amazon lists it around $144 although you can order it direct from Gigaparts for $60 and even donate one through their site.
I’ve worked a station in Bulgaria before on 10m using my G90. I’ve reached Ireland, Germany, Brazil, Mexico, and countless contacts all using my G90. It’s an excellent radio.
Would really be cool if you (or another popular youtuber) would really dig into these radios and provide an overview of who really makes them. For example, you featured today the Radioddity GA-510 ... I have one. But I also have a Baofeng BF-H6 which is the same radio and if you look at the Tidradio TD-H6 it is also the same radio. So .. who really makes them? Radioddity? Baofeng? Tidradio? or? The same can be said for many other radios. The packaging (e.g. style, color, etc.) or vendor might change, but what is under the covers is really the same making the marketplace confusing. My guess is that Baofeng is the primary manufacturer and all these other radios (Tidradio, Radioddity, Retevis, etc.) are just white label options from Baofeng. Yes, they are different companies, but Baofeng (or?) is their manufacturer. But that's just a guess. I've poked around the interweb a few times to see if I could find a family tree of manufacturers (especially of the Chinese radios) but haven't been able to find anything. Would love to know because there are just too many videos (not you) about "new" radios that are really just re-packaged (new styling, etc,) versions of something that's already out there. Been burned a few times buying something that I thought was new and novel only to find out its really not different ...
I saw you hit on the BTECH UV-50X2 but didn't mention the UV-25X2 dual band or more significantly the UV-25X4 triband . I have both. I get as much as 30 watts output. They're not top notch but dang good radios for the price.
Pretty sure that anytone 10m radio that you're talking about is just a striker in different clothing. I have seen the lids off of both of them and they look identical. Look up a Stryker 955 and then the anytone and I think you will see that they have the same boards. I'm quite sure that they are running different software though. Even their power meters are nearly identical in look.
Nice video from HT up to the G90. I have a couple of them. Gotta love the G90. I own a G90, it’s a fun radio to own. Simple to use, works great with the XPA-125B amplifier.
I saw where you were talking about the 11 m Lincoln Radio I see videos of how operators where they've got a 11 m Radio in the vehicle beside they're amateur radio with a 11 m linear amplifier beside it advertising how far they can talk with a CB radio with a high power output is that not taking chances of losing your amateur radio license and being find a big whopping ticket. 73

Nope, lol. You're thinking about someone else. I wouldn't say I'd never heard of Lubbock, like I said, I've been there many times
Great content, lots of information about ham radio 73s.
Any radio that has a 'president's' name is suspect. A long tradition for 11 m bootleggers.
what is a "legit" 10 meter radio?? lol... if it has all the filterning, its a 10 meter radio, period
Yup. It’s getting ignored by most but solid little rig. Also field programmable via phone app.
AnyTone AT-778UV is the same radio as a Retevis RT95. Keep checking as it can often be as low as $100-$105 AND may include the programming cable.
Great info, my question is Im stuck between either th anyone 878uv ii pro or the yeas 5DR or 3D Im looking for a ham that has analog, digital and FM. I live in South San Francisco and see that there seems to be a good amount of DMR will fusion work on the Yeas Fusion?
Thanks,
GRY
one thing about the baofeng HT`s i got 2 way back in the beginning and 2 within last year and now all but 2 battery is dead/shorted and will not charge HT`s are fine still.
The Ranger RCI 2950 family of radios work well on 10 & 12 meters and is a good choice or a tech that wants for work 10 meters.
The 220 band is making a comeback in my area. You probably did not include the TYT TH-9000D Plus 1.25M Amateur Radio on your list because 220 is not the most popular band but it is a good radio, and one of the few full power monobanders for this band. Try it. You'll like it !
I've been using 220 for 10-15 years. We have some good repeaters in this area.
I want to know where you got the battery for the Antone 878 that is USB-C chargeable…

You can still get over night delivery even after COVID? I can maybe get about a weeks delivery IF I'm lucky. Good for you!!!
COVID delays are history
appreciate your time, As I am just studying to get my tech, Thus i have just started looking for a radio at the same time i want want one I an grow into and not end up having to buy another on in a few months. Also thank you for doing the you tube class I have been watching it as part of my studying.
Glad I could help
The baofeng dm-1701 is a good one. I would reccomend doing the open gd77 mod on it right away though. It gets you into dmr in the under $100 price range, and with the open gd77 mod it's fairly easy to program with lots of contacts and channels. You probably won't find a cheaper handheld that can do digital mode and analog on both 2m and 440.
How about a QRP HF only list from Amazon.
Thanks, I will look into that
For my house I would buy a new or used 50w Japanese radio, but to carry in the car without a doubt a small anytone or btech from Amazon. Could you make a video of used movile radios? I have an ADI AR146 and it is really excellent for being a copy of Kenwood
I'll look into it
What is the fcc web site to renew my extra class license? Thanks enjoy your show.
Can i get in contact with americans using the first one you showed in the video? Im from italy
I have the baofeng UV-21-R and I absolutley love it over my UV-5R. Dont hesitate to buy it folks.
I have a lightly used President Lincoln II+ I will sell cheap if interested.
Good bet.
@phil2082 Thanks for the info and help. Much appreciate it.
If it isn't running on three-phase 4160 VAC, it's only QRP. 73...
Love my ANYTONE. First I have heard of a new battery that is USB-c chargeable. Where can I get that battery?
ebay.us/8mw1qM
@@lvsluggo007 That's too bad, there were some great rigs from back then. What would be your preferred HT right now, if price wasn't an issue?
@@HamRadio2 I guess one of the kenwood/icom/yaesu models.. When I got back into the hobby I started with a Baofeng UV5R, was not impressed with it, but since I wanted to try out DMR, I'd heard good things about the Baofeng DR-1801, and bought one of those. Immediately replaced the f/w with OpenGD77. Great radio for both analog and DMR. Based on your review, I just ordered one of the Radtel RT-470X units, and should have it on Monday..
I would have included the quancheng uv-k5. With the third party firmware it's a crazy flexible radio.
I did - literally the 2nd radio I spoke about
@@HamRadio2 sorry I must have been distracted momentarily.
Edit: Rewatching. Yup I saw the uv-5r and tuned out a little too long :P Nothing against those in general just not interesting to me.
What about the Wouxun KG-UV920/980 or the Alinco's?
You can find both of those for better prices than Amazon has
what mic and antena do you recomend for tyt th9800? i installed my radio in my jk...
I put a piece of blue tape over the mic pickup holes and pierce the tape once over one hole you covered. That calms it down enough to work well.
I can confirm only serial programming, so no usb c pgm
I moved my subscription to "ALL"
Expanding my horizons is why I'm here. Someone needs to make a video on "Here's a list of good handhelds that are not Baofeng."
Cause just searching "most popular" "most sold" you still end up getting Baofeng mixed into the list.
Price aside, what are people actually using that's well designed, little to no issues reported, connects to repeaters and transmits perfectly fine.
What is the flagship (non-Baofeng) radio?
Pretty much answered that here
ua-cam.com/video/LLIxRV_a_R0/v-deo.html
Top brand " Ham radios are hacked all the time So would say you're talking poop about the presedent Lincoln mate. 😂
Top brand Ham Radios don't have the crappy front end rejection or cruddy receivers that the Lincoln radios have. It's not about hacking, it's about quality of build
Thanks for all your content! I'm still studying for my license, but getting close to feeling confident to take the test.
Best of luck
Just trying to be prepared….. looking for a home base unit and a mobile unit. Ease of use and distance is most important. Learning as I go.
I have some videos about that
kids live around the country. What hand held and/or mobile that in an emergency that we can still communicate with- licensing if needed is not a problem
Ham Radio has a few options for this
For the BTECH 6X2, there's a good reason why there's a box on the product page that says it's a frequently returned item. Mine just quit working after about a week. Just refused to boot up. Sent it back.
I got my Anytone 878uvii plus for about $50 less than that Btech, NIB. Granted off ebay from a supplier there, so wouldn't have as good of a return policy as Amazon
Sounds like a good price
Question looking for a radio to keep in case of a cell blackout. Would need to have communication about 200 miles. Not wanting to get a ham license. Is there anything that fits that bill? Thanks!!!
CB Radio
@@HamRadio2 thank you!
I've got the UV-K5 and UV-K6 and like them for what they are. Looks a lot less CCPish and is still cheap. Not stellar harmonics on VHF, but fine otherwise.
Yeah I found the same thing about harmonics. They work pretty well. I like how hackable they are.
TYT TH-UV88 Ham Radio Handheld 2 Pack Two Way Radio Analog Amateur Dual Band VHF UHF Walkie Talkies

could you do a video of "not recommended" amazon products? like companies with bad support or prone to failure.
Probably be too many
I have a tidradio H-8 that I use and like
Jason: What are the most useful VHF/UHF repeaters in the DFW area?
I’m getting started, so I appreciate these types of reviews.
Great
I’m partial to the Baofeng BF-F8HP. It was my first radio still works great and is a sturdy little radio. Needed an antenna upgrade. I can recommend the Nagoya 771. I live in the Pocono Mountains and have easily hit repeaters from outside the house that are 10 - 15 miles from my house. Great starter radio.
Thanks for sharing
I have been looking at the TYT TH9800D. What is the difference between the 9800 and 9800D?
The non-D isn't made anymore. I don't think there's many differences
I need a 2m/440
That the face comes off
I like the Anytone AT-5555NII over the President. 10-12m
Yea I'd agree with that
Great Review as always. Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
I have the little brother to the B-Tech 50x2, I have the B-Tech 25x2 and love it. KO4HPC 73 all.
Good choice
Hello, new in this, I looking for a radio that could cover 5 miles or more.....? thx
All of these can do that if you have clear line of sight
@@HamRadio2 Thx bro, I thinking on getting 2 Radioddity GA-510, to be in the legal side, should I get a license, if so which one, online?
The Explorer QRZ-1 is my go-to. Not just because I got it no-charge through the New Ham program but also because it's factory-tuned by Gigaparts for excellent harmonics and solid legal operation. Durable and easy to use. I use it as my mobile. Amazon lists it around $144 although you can order it direct from Gigaparts for $60 and even donate one through their site.
I’ve worked a station in Bulgaria before on 10m using my G90. I’ve reached Ireland, Germany, Brazil, Mexico, and countless contacts all using my G90. It’s an excellent radio.
I have two of the Radioddity GA-510 and love the power output it has I can hit a Repeater 55 miles away with a mobile Dual Band Antenna. 73 K4BWN
I have 4 as my family radio kit
@@KB5UTY-Dave They are a heck of lot better then the first HT I ordered the UV5R because it sucks
I was gonna be pissed if you skipped the g90. Love mine.
Haha
I have a few basic ham radios but I’m ready to buy a higher end one. Between the ft5dr or Kenwood TH-D75, which would you recommend?
I saw you hit on the BTECH UV-50X2 but didn't mention the UV-25X2 dual band or more significantly the UV-25X4 triband . I have both. I get as much as 30 watts output. They're not top notch but dang good radios for the price.
If it doesn't have a VFO, I don't want it.
Most all of them do
Pretty sure that anytone 10m radio that you're talking about is just a striker in different clothing. I have seen the lids off of both of them and they look identical. Look up a Stryker 955 and then the anytone and I think you will see that they have the same boards. I'm quite sure that they are running different software though. Even their power meters are nearly identical in look.
HT - Retevis RA89 - Love mine!
I bought a qyt kt-8900r. Tri bander. They're less than $80 and a pretty cool little radio
