One of the items that is very important to me is that the acquisition codec is the same as the editing codec. There is no transcoding. I shoot a lot of long events. This saves me a lot of work.
Hey Levi, Beautiful footage from your documentary, good work! Loved the slow-motion shots out on the water. The Shogun fixes almost everything I dislike about the FS5.
Does it matter what one you buy? the site suggests the Ninja Flame for my 1Dxmkii which already shoots 4K 60' 4-2-2 at 8 bit with 13.5 stops of dynamic range, the camera has no log profiles either so I don't think I'd be able to exploit an Atomos monitors HDR feature, on the other hand I do want a bigger and brighter screen to look at, the 30 minute bypass and all the exposure features which seem to come with most of the models so the Ninja V seems good enough for what I need!
Is there a way to not have the file be too big? Mine is recording +100GB an hour. I can't really use it for anything. Advise this rookie, pleeeeease...
Good vid. I had the Atomos assassin (sold now) And I use gh5 and a7iii. What’s the deal with slow motion options of newer Atomos (is it the “flame” the best one now?) I know they do 4k60p but do they cover the 180fps out of gh5 and 120p out of a7iii? So my question. Which Atomos would you buy if I were me? And do they do the HFR in 1080?
How do you deal with the massive files coming out of the Atomos. How do you store your files or do you just dump the footage afterwards? Trying to find a solution without buying a new harddrive every shoot. I have the FS5II and Atomos with a Movi Pro. Trying to find assistance on how to put this setup all together, any advice would be great. I am also trying to mount a mic on this setup too
So there's really nothing we can do with data these days. Quality images mean bigger files, aka, less compression. So there's no way around that. Hopefully, you don't eat up to much hard drive space.
Great video, can you say that Atomos makes Lumix Gh5s dynamic range higher for 4k 10 bit 422, Gh5 or gh5s has already internal recording for it. So if sd card don't effect the quality. did I miss something?
Your skin tone / shadow noise 8bit 4:2:2 ProRes example looks pretty f$%& good, bro. It gives C100MK II owners, especially, a little boost in latitude for pushing their footage in post. Thanks for your work.
4:35 That monitor holder is exactly the kind of thing I've been looking for! I've had bad experiences with arms and such. This looks super sturdy and stable. What's it called?
8:54 Do you grade the footage manually? Or with luts? I also have a atomos monitor, and I have a hard time grading my footage in post to make it look as good as what i see when using AtomHDR
I usually grade them manually. Grading log always takes a little more pushing of the image then what people think. Im always surprised by how much sat I have to put in the image. Hopefully, that helps.
James Nguyen hi James, well in my opinion I would get the inferno because it can work with HDMI and SDI cameras. And it can record all the higher frame rate through HDMI and SDI. For the sole purpose of having a longer-term investment I would get the inferno.
Thanks for the great detail regarding the monitor. Question: I’m trying to make sure I understand you correctly. If I’m using the monitor to record my footage, let’s say SLOG3, and I turn on ATOM HDR then adjust the slider to (you said) 400-500, is the footage being recorded to the SSD with the HDR effect? Or Is the monitor just displaying the data being recorded and still recording to the SSD in SLOG3 for grading in post? I’m purchasing a Ninja Flame 7 for my A7 III and I like know as much as possible before the new gear is in my hands.
Really enjoyed this video. I’m a beginner filmmaker but I understand all you spoke of in this video because I take the time to study. No I don’t have the kind of money to buy but that doesn’t stop me from studying. Lol 😂
so, i have a need to record college classes and was hoping to use the combination of the nikon D3300 and the Atmos ninja 2. my recordings do not have to be stellar. I just need to capture viewable video and decent sound. Are there any setting combinations that will get me at least a good video? I'm I headed the right direction with this project? Thank you
Love the video! I just ordered my Atomos flame. After years of debating your video really help my decision. Thanks for the helpful information. I use the A7s markii. Do you plan on doing a video about your A7s rig setup? I would love to see your setup with Atomos.
@@uhnotinterested Yes, that's with the FS5 with updates. As far as the FS5 II, that comes with all the paid updates already installed, no need to buy them. It also has new color sciences which looks so much better.
Hey Levi! I pared my gh5 to the atomos ninja inferno. Also bought a Sandisk ultra II 480 and a HDMI 2.0b. Unfortunately the monitor cannot rec. at the advertised 10bit-4K-60fps nor are there any options for 1080p slow mo (120-240fps). Their customer support offered very little to no help unfortunately, so I thought about asking you based on your experience. Also would it be possible to use a speedy nvme drive (through a SATA enclosure, in the SSD caddy)? thank you for reading this. Cheers!
Michalis, Im not sure why it isnt not working and Im sorry for the issues. I would assume that there has to be some setting that arent right, and thats why they arent working. I would also have to see what your monitro and camera are saying. I do know that if your SSD isnt fast enough then your not able to record certian codecs and speeds. There the one I use and it lets you record 240fps raw, its the fastest on the market for Atomos. I would suggest starting there. I havent had any issues with it and it has a 10 year warrenty. amzn.to/2CUPLJL
Thank you so much for the reply Levi. I eventually contacted the company and RMA it.Thank you also for the tip on the SSD, I might follow up on that when i get my monitor back. My issue was that, with the sandisk SSD I couldnt get the advertized 10bit 4k 60, even if its recommented by the company itself. It just flashes on and off like crazy. But you raised my curiosity with your answer: Do you record 240fps with the ninja inferno? If so, paired with a GH5? The Atomos contact told me that the GH5 outputs 60fps max. no 120, no 240... I am very confused now! I promise that i wont take up more of your time after your reply. Cheers from Greece
Im so sorry to confuse you. No you can not get 240 with the GH5. I was refereing to other cameras that shoot at those higher frame rates. When I pair them with the Atomos and use that Sony SSD i've never had an isssue.
I see that this video is older now but with the GH5s and Atomos, it looks amazing. I agree with the 12-bit option and 6K for anamorphic and yeah the Sony NP batteries burn quick. It needs V mount options. So is it the cost, the heat or the tech that keeps it from recording 4:4:4 as well?
You should probably do a review of the FS5, since you’re a long term user of it. I’ve been thinking about getting the fs5 and pairing it with the 7Q+ raw bundle. I just like the feature set of 7Q+ out of all the recorders available on the market.
Roberto Lobo That’s a great question. Yes and no. The Atomos will recorded the signal in a 10bit 422 color space. But it will actually be a 8bit 422 color. If you think about it though that’s double the color just by going from 420 to 422. And it’s a way easier to use codec, prores
I know this Q is a year old but, no matter what camera you have, often what it records internally is different from what it provides at an output, say HDMI or SDI. The recorder doesn't "convert" your 8bit 4:2:0 signal to 10bit 4:2:2... but if your camera provides 8 or 10bit 4:2:2 signal at the output, the recorder will capture it.
Nice Levi. Thanks for the insight. I am considering getting this or the Blackmagic video assist 4K to work with my Ursa Mini Pro. Any thoughts between those?
Thank you. Hands down the Atomos. Way better monitor, and has way more options for frame rates, codecs, HDR, and can be a system that works with all cameras. I can't tell you how many shots I've seen with people on there REDs, Alexas, F55 and theres even a shot of a Sony Venice out there, and on top of these cameras is...an Atomos Shogun. Like I said in my video too, Im not a paid ambassador or anything, I just use the product and have used it with many camera platforms and am impressed.
As a monitor, it will work with any camera that allows to send the image out via HDMI or SDI. As a recorder monitor, the camera has to send a clean HDMI signal out or a clean SDI signal out. SDI is much more common on bigger cameras. What camera are you looking to use this with?
I know that im the type of guy that sounds like he knows when a person sounds like they know what they are talking, and I know that this guy sounds like he knows what he's talking about, do you know what I'm talking about?
This video makes no freakin sense when you know nothing already about the idea of using a recorder. It would have been nice if you explained that a little.
16 bits!! that´s we want, i personnally don´t need ATOMOS for exposure or focus, it weight too much and diffcult the way you can work , i´ve seen very talented guy who go leightweight doing more than an awesome reportage (true art), and event covers, lot better that you show us here. My last word is you just don´t need it, the gear does not matter at all, or at least it is not that will make of you an artist
Nando & Blonde Moby Dick oh please stop. Yes it’s true no amount of equipment will make you amazing. But as someone who’s been on camera and a 1st ac. I would choose the person with the atomos because you can get closer to your own vision. You can rack focus way better and cleaner. So no it won’t make you some genius film maker but I guarantee you send the same person out with an atomos and they will get better footage than without.
Yes, I'm looking to buy one of these recorders for my little GH4. Looking forward to the extra color space.

Yep Ninja V would be perfect.

Kevin Randolph yes convergent design, and black magic.

Please advise me can i buy atomos shogun inferno, and please let me know which one is good because 3 4 model looks like same
If you can get the shogun inferno I would go with that. It has both hdmi and sdi.
How about using it with a Nikon D500? Thanks for any answers!!
Daniel Diaz-Alejo I don’t no Nikon very well, but if it has clean hdmi out, then yes get one.
Does your Atomos Shogun Inferno have fan noise when in use?
Yes it dose, but it's not bad at all. As long as you're aware of it.
Thanks for your reply. I've sent my Atomos Ninja Inferno back to Atomos Support, as I felt its making too much noise.

I shoot on A7 iii and edit my videos with Premiere Pro on Windows. Can Atomos give me advantage in quality? Or Premiere doesn't support its codecs?
Yes, the Atomos will give you 4K ProRes files. There so much better to work with and edit the XAVC.
@@UpHillCinema thanks

there was a video that says it only runs hott if "mirror mode" is set on yoyr camera
