Chris Harris does an awesome job driving cars to their limit. If you love the exterior styling of the Porsche Cayman, listen to the man who designed it in this video - ua-cam.com/video/Yyc1UsnDqYU/v-deo.html
Whilst I respect Chris Harris, I find him dull as a person. When Clarkson is on point and focusing on delivering solid content, there’s no one better.... There’s no way Chris could deliver that Rally history piece as well as Clarkson did on the Grand Tour. No way.
Abram Koucheki - they're not expensive used. Bought mine 6 years ago for $32k but now you can get them for $25. Maybe even $20k. Very inexpensive. Get yourself one!
Almost exact car (2014) arriving in a week, my 6th Porsche. I believe this will be my all time favorite. Same color, PDK, and higher spec, 13K miles. What a superb video and drive. CH is a monster, thanks for confirming my choice.
I really wanted to buy a Corvette and walked into not one, but three dealerships. In one of them I was quite literally shown a Camaro and then shown the door. On another I was allowed to look at a brochure, at the salesmans desk. I walked into a Porsche dealership with two weeks of beard, old jeans and a t-shirt and drove half a dozen cars. Bought one. It was so easy and the service has been great. GM just does not have the infrastructure to sell or service their awesome Corvette. Sad but true.
Recently I was browsing around a Porsche dealership in a dreamstate where I saw 5 Caymans in 5 different colours. The 3 that stood out the most to me were the Sapphire Blue, Agate Grey and Rhodium Silver, with light Pebble Grey interiors. Out of those 3 it would be between the Sapphire Blue and Rhodium Silver which both show the Cayman's lines really well without being too in yer face, but they're way too expensive. A new, (almost fully loaded), Cayman is £65-£70K ($109-$117K.) Lovely looking car though, and if I was in the market for a small 2 seater sportscar it would be a very tough choice between the Cayman S and the Jaguar F Type Coupe, which is as equally gorgeous in the metal.
@@cayman9815 For various reasons I've sold the car so I can't talk about long-term reliability. What I can say with certainty though, is that it's an absolute joy to drive and the 6 cylinder engine sits real close to you while driving and sounds glorious.
Honestly, I was never a big Porsche fan, but I rented a standard Boxster with manual transmission (mainly because it was the only sporty car to rent nearby) for a weekend and I my only complain was indeed the steering feel. It was precise and everything but somehow the steering in my good old 323i feels more alive. Yes, I would love to buy something more hardcore one day, but then I probably wouldn't want to take a car like an Elise on a long trip to the alps, where I had to use motorways and drive in bad weather conditions. So, as I favour coupés over convertibles, I really can't think of anything that would compare to a Cayman on the current market. Especially since the looks are just right.
Have to agree. Been looking at the options aswell. The f type V6 S sounds lovely but it's just too heavy. GTR.. Mehh... Will hopefully switch to this in 2018 :)
Justin Walters wow it's been a year since I posted on here! As my picture suggests I have gone with an Audi R8 v8 and may I add it is a fantastic car with a tubi exhaust (epic) and manual gear box. Yup,the way the car looks. I went to a porsche dealer intending to swap my Elise for a gen 2 cayman. The money didn't add up so I decided to sell the Elise to put down on a mortgage. I went from a SLK350 to new elise to 2008 TTS and now the mini. The mini in most respects is the better car. cheap to run, practical, and relatively fast. If money were no object yeah sure the car is a beaut. If you dont mind burning cash that is.....if I end up in a decent paid job then ill be looking at 350Z NISMO
ashley styles glad things still worked and u still have a pretty nice performance car and to be honest I would prefer a mini cooper JCW GP edition to this Porsche, even though it is a really cool car.
I really like how Chris explaines and tells everything he sees, feels and experiences! 99,9% of the carjournalists just ready the brochure out loud... About the Porsche: great car, and i am glad that the cayman isn't just for hairdressers anymore
Chris which one is best, the 2013 Cayman S or the 2013 Exige S? I could see the Cayman might be more comfortable but we are talking driving here. You may want to do a head to head on these two rides. I really would like to know which one feels best turning and changing direction, which one is best when driving at "ten tenths". Thanks!
Let's be honest, most people won't ever see the ring. For everyday grins and enjoyment, I don't think anything could match the 6 banger. And let's be honest, that's more than anybody could wish for.
@@milchomarkov8158 Very true. But one can restore the lost horses Porsche stole from the 981 s engine. For A$1900 I remapped the ecu to 364hp, 420Nm 0-100km /h in 3.89sec.... hair trigger throttle response which pulls like the clappers from 3500rpm to redline. I now drive a beast of a Cayman s with the glorious NA engine wail. Best mod Porsche never offered! All with stock air filter and exhaust manifolds.
I feel as though the M2's interior is lacking considering it's a 2016 car. The M3 and Cayman's interiors are far nicer. I would say though that everybody I've spoken to that has an M2, says it's unbelievable and more fun than the M3!
I've never been a huge Porsche fan but this car looks great and it's the first Porsche I've heard that actually sounds good as well. Great review on the car, one day I hope you and Matt take over Top Gear. Keep up the fantastic work.
Nick Rugh My dog loves laying down on the engine deck...he gets to stick his head out of the window without having to maintain his balance while standing up!
Chris as always a pleasure to watch. this Cayman s along with the GT4 will be the last NA 6 cylinder of their breed. from now on it's all 4 turbo charged.
How about the Cayman versus the new Corvette C7 ? About the same price point..........I would love to see which makes it around a track faster. I hope one is available soon for testing.........I will be interested to hear Chris's impressions of the new Stingray's dynamics versus the competition.
My dad bought one two years used with 10k miles for $50k. With a PDK it's as accelerative and quick through corners as you could possibly want. It's a bargain for the performance and the enjoyment
How close is the (1st gen) 986 Boxster's driving experience/feel/handling to this new Cayman? Because there is this slight chance that I can afford one soon... just what percentage of the sharpness, responsiveness and balance of this cayman might I get in the original boxster?
That's not the balance I was referring to. I'm referring to how the entire package works together. It's an immeasurable feature. a 450hp FR car will struggle to be balanced, and the corvette isn't designed to be anyways. It's designed to be raw and overpowering. And while I agree the interior is miles above the previous bet, I can't see it comparing to a Porsche interior. Again, I'm sure it will be an amazing machine, I personally love it, but the cars are meant for different purposes/buyers
Please do a comparison between the Cayman S and the Lotus Exige S!! similar power, similar price, and according to you both of these cars are great! but which one would you put your money on if you had to buy one??
I don't agree with MrC7 regarding Porsche, but he is right that the Vette has a lot of trickle-down features from the C6R program. Most of the tweaks made to the C6 over its run come from this program, and if you read the white paper on the C7 this holds true as well (even little things like radiator placement). Also, 72hp/L is pretty mega for a pushrod engine; just like NA vs. turbos, one has to adjust their expectations based on configuration. Power to weight is where pushrods impress.
nice video. I'm surprised they let you go without a helmet. love the interior. I have a 16v scirocco, 88 e30 M3, 71 Alfa gtv, v70r, and my 07 cayman S is the best car I ever owned
What is it about the new Cayman that makes it look kinda tall from behind? I can't put my finger on it, but the boxster somehow looks right and this... Dunno, does it have bigger rear window? Or is it raked differently...? What do you guys think? The first cayman looked better in this respect (not talking about the front, or the rear part from the lights down, just the roof->rear lights segment)
Should I get the 981 Cayman S (or GTS) in a PDK or Manual? I have a manual 2017 GT86 Orange Edition at the moment. And my last car was a 2014 S-Tronic S3! If I get 718 Cayman S I will go PDK, but not sure about the 981!!
It would probably be better to get the 718 in manual because it has so much torque. The pdk would help the flat 6 stay in it's powerband. I own a 991.1 with almost exactly the same 3.4 flat 6 engine as a Cayman GTS. I love it with the pdk. The manual has very long gears.
The 981 platform is so good that a solid argument could be made for it being all 99% of us will ever need on the street. The only change I would make is to lower gearing a bit so that you can rev it out in more gears without threatening your license every time you go near redline.
Loved the review, but I don't know if I agree that in that price point, which is HIGH for a 2-seater, that it is the most desirable... I will hold judgment until you test drive the new 6 cyl Jag F-type, which I think sounds absolutely amazing (like the old E-types) and looks even better (IMO). I mean, this car, especially with ceramic brakes, is more expensive than an M3... is it that good?
Short of a test drive, I really can't see how the boxster and cayman differ other than the soft top convertible option and the slight claustrophobia it brings - albeit for less money. Are there any other key differences between them? They look mostly identical. I can't believe they perform THAT differently either. IT just boils down to roof eh?
fast forward 6 years, and I'd love to see you, Chris, with the BRZ on this track. I know you did a track day with the car 6 years ago, but times have changed and the car is different. same could be said for the Cayman/Boxster. Sadly, the 370Z is unchanged after 10 years in production. cheers.
Hey am i seeing this right: Is the eingine/exhaust IN the cabin of the car, no separation glass between driver and engine bay???? If so that could be potentially really reallyyyy dangerous I know it german engineering but still

Yeah. Its not much more car for a LOT more money..... thanks btw

Bought myself a Yellow 981 S like this fully loaded …. it’s FANTASTIC!
love when Chris does anything on anything :)
I love the slow motion in all his videos. Keep it up Chris!
Thanks!
a 981 Cayman GTS is my all time dream car 😍
Ahhh yes. The best videos to watch after a long day at work..
quite the contrast with your recent review of the 718
4 cylinder is no match for 6 cyl boxer
@@MultiWiciu the 718 a lot of faster over 1 lap nordschleife...
That's an honor to have you here in Portugal, Chris! Hope you've enjoyed it.
Nice review!
I am a BMW guy but sorry the cayman is just awesome and the price 36k is on the money
Hey chris, which one would you prefer between 981 cayman s and M2 competition?
guys, cayman s or m3 F80?
I'm there aswell! Will be replacing M3 e46(hopefully not!!)
Haha facing this same dilemma myself! Leaning towards the Cayman S atm but my opinion changes daily!
Haha yea, still struggling. ATM it leans towards a BMW M2 tho.
I feel as though the M2's interior is lacking considering it's a 2016 car. The M3 and Cayman's interiors are far nicer. I would say though that everybody I've spoken to that has an M2, says it's unbelievable and more fun than the M3!
BROOKS A bmw are you're joking right? Choose between the Cayman S and the TT RS. Both the best.
I've never been a huge Porsche fan but this car looks great and it's the first Porsche I've heard that actually sounds good as well. Great review on the car, one day I hope you and Matt take over Top Gear. Keep up the fantastic work.
I watched this video on Saturday and I've been obsessed with getting a Cayman S ever since. Anybody want one of my kidneys for £50k?
So agreed. I found a 4k mile 2013 S and picked it up...it impresses me more every time I drive it.
Cayman S in yellow doesn't do this car justice.
+Joshua Belo blue, red, silver, white are the best colors.
when i am missing the good old car reviews when I watch top gear, I come on youtube and watch chris harris
good stuff chris!
50k to spend.. just wish i had somewhere to put my dog - the space above the engine is almost big enough to stick him there lol
I take my dog everywhere in my Cayman though he's only about 15 lbs. Couldn't fit much bigger dog.
Nick Rugh My dog loves laying down on the engine deck...he gets to stick his head out of the window without having to maintain his balance while standing up!
Bought mine 2 weeks ago and loving it, LSD option is great.
[1:02] "It's not perfect..."
Haven't really understood the imperfections though :)
Chris as always a pleasure to watch. this Cayman s along with the GT4 will be the last NA 6 cylinder of their breed. from now on it's all 4 turbo charged.
I love this car but the yellow has to go
How about the Cayman versus the new Corvette C7 ? About the same price point..........I would love to see which makes it around a track faster. I hope one is available soon for testing.........I will be interested to hear Chris's impressions of the new Stingray's dynamics versus the competition.
Here in Ontario, Canada, a Cayman STARTS at $100,000.
My dad bought one two years used with 10k miles for $50k. With a PDK it's as accelerative and quick through corners as you could possibly want. It's a bargain for the performance and the enjoyment
Just bought a 987.1! Still cooler than the current options for new cars
Porsche has not missed in a long time... every single new model they release gets glowing reviews
What sort of credentials do you need to get a circuit like this to yourself, if only for a few laps? Does it also cost money? Are both necessary?
Please do a comparison between the Cayman S and the Lotus Exige S!! similar power, similar price, and according to you both of these cars are great! but which one would you put your money on if you had to buy one??
How would you compare it to the new f-type jag coupe?
I don't agree with MrC7 regarding Porsche, but he is right that the Vette has a lot of trickle-down features from the C6R program. Most of the tweaks made to the C6 over its run come from this program, and if you read the white paper on the C7 this holds true as well (even little things like radiator placement).
Also, 72hp/L is pretty mega for a pushrod engine; just like NA vs. turbos, one has to adjust their expectations based on configuration. Power to weight is where pushrods impress.
Wow what an amazing car, I wish to own a 2013 Boxster one day, that is one of my life goals.
Thank you MrC7vette for your clearly unbiased view on an unreleased car with which you clearly have much experience! How could anyone disagree!?
How comfortable is it for every day though?
Did you feel thrashed after thrashing the car?
As a porsche cayman owner (08 model) i was REALLY looking forward seeing this review!
I have Boxster S 987.2. This will be my next ride. Absolutely amazing looking and driving car.
nice video. I'm surprised they let you go without a helmet. love the interior. I have a 16v scirocco, 88 e30 M3, 71 Alfa gtv, v70r, and my 07 cayman S is the best car I ever owned
LT1 still uses pushrods. The suspension still uses leaf springs. Hasn't changed much, has it now?
Thank you for your response.
But even the road segment was filmed in portimão?The last time i was there I don't remember that curvy road :|
Your my favorite car reviewer but what do you think about the Manuel in this car and for porsche
Thanks for you answer.
Even the road segment was shooted in Portimão?
The 981 platform is so good that a solid argument could be made for it being all 99% of us will ever need on the street. The only change I would make is to lower gearing a bit so that you can rev it out in more gears without threatening your license every time you go near redline.
One of my favorite cars being reviewed by my favorite car journalist. This made my day!
Oh man, great review once again, my only criticism is that the vid showed up one day late ;) great stuff and great car
How is it compared to the Boxster S and are the carbon ceramic brakes worth the money?
Loved the review, but I don't know if I agree that in that price point, which is HIGH for a 2-seater, that it is the most desirable... I will hold judgment until you test drive the new 6 cyl Jag F-type, which I think sounds absolutely amazing (like the old E-types) and looks even better (IMO). I mean, this car, especially with ceramic brakes, is more expensive than an M3... is it that good?
brilliant.I just imported on to Australia, its getting a RHD conversion done but i havent tracked it yet-thats awesome news!!
Classic Chris Harris. Don't care every 2nd clip is about Porsches. Just enjoy. Lovely work, Chris and Neil!
Does this car have the stock open differential? PASM? Torque vectoring?
fast forward 6 years, and I'd love to see you, Chris, with the BRZ on this track. I know you did a track day with the car 6 years ago, but times have changed and the car is different. same could be said for the Cayman/Boxster. Sadly, the 370Z is unchanged after 10 years in production. cheers.
despite owning an 07 i thought the previous models styling was gorgeous and a the true mid engine sports car, such a legend
Does the car in the video have Porsche Torque Vectoring, Power Steering Plus, or the sports chrono package?
One of his best reviews in a while and thats saying something.
Where did you get it? I'm heading to driving school there in March and want to grab something nice for the day to head out to Baker CA in.
Hey am i seeing this right:
Is the eingine/exhaust IN the cabin of the car, no separation glass between driver and engine bay????
If so that could be potentially really reallyyyy dangerous
I know it german engineering but still
New Chris Harris and Mighty Car Mods epizodes. That's a good morning right there!
