- It's been a long time since Triumph have made a bike this small (1950-60s - under different ownership). Let's take a look at what they have built from a big bike guys perspective.

Thanks for acknowledging that it is made in India. Most reviewers have a hard time accepting that the baby KTMs, Huskies and BMWs are built here. My dad works as a metallurgical consultant for one of the Bajaj's vendors. The quality levels on this Triumph is way more demanding to what KTMs have is what he said even though all come out from the same assembly line. He absolutely loved this video. Especially seeing this bike being ridden on the Autobahn.
Booked this bike and I'd be getting it soon. At first I was skeptical because it was made in India. But I realized that how big companies do business and extend their reach by having the cost lower as possible. Hence, some companies well known brands have their factories in India, Thailand etc. And as you've said as long as the triumph controls the quality there is nothing wrong with it. It's like my PC parts from a reliable brand that are made in China. They had factory in China because having a factory in there was cheap but they control the quality. The only time I wouldnt buy a Chinese product is if the brand is Chinese, we all know for a fact how their products works.
😊 I am all ok with India, Thailand and Phillipines. However China is something I don't really vouch for. Reason being the cost advantage has gradually diminished over years. The political environment is dicy. However for the other three countries democracy and constitutions actually create a more stable environment for manufacturing in the long term. I remember in the early 2000's Bajaj had just started exporting their 100 cc bikes to African countries and wanted to have a good cost advantage and were exploring Chinese vendors but the team came back home rejecting every option and ended up developing the parts here in and around Pune City (the Detroit and Oxford of India) on a near Just-in-time basis. If it hadn't been for this incident, I doubt Bajaj would have been in a position like they are today. Manufactured and exported more than a million KTMs. Triumph expects them to repeat the same feat.
@@ttrguy9952 Lol. You are so very wrong my friend. All 390s are made here in India. The assembly plant is just a stone's throw away from where I am typing this comment. BMW 310s are made in Hosur by a brand called TVS that also owns Norton now. And yeah if you still don't want to believe that Bajaj owns majority stakes in KTM, Husqvarna and GasGas through PTW Holding AG, the direct majority stakeholders in KTM, there is nothing much that can be said. You need to do your homework. The China story is long forgotten.
@@ttrguy9952Pls check the facts !
Also, check how much of stake Bajaj has on KTM !
All KTM 390s are built by Bajaj in India!
I did 1420 kms of touring on my speed 400 in three days. It’s an absolute fun motorcycle ❤
I have one. (400 Speed)
A FANTASTIC little bike.
SUPER SMOOTH. Both motor AND gearbox.
NO, thump thump thump. NOTHING. SUPER SMOOTH. SMOOTH.
Sounds GREAT. A Great note from the exhaust.
So LIGHT and NIMBLE.
ONLY 170kg. ( WOW )
First gear is a nanny gear, I NEVER use it.
It has a close ratio gearbox.
Once you get out of 5th gear, she Flies, she Moves!
GREAT QUALITY.
DEFINITELY a WINNER. DEFINITELY.
Ride one.
I cannot fault it. (I don't like the 24hr clock, I don't like the 180klm speedo, Too optimistic, I am not a fan of the bar end mirrors.)
I personally would give it 9.9/10 ( NOT joking)
Triumph and Bajaj (?) did a STELLAR job. WELL done guys.
Regards,.
( 'OZ'. - Australia )
You get deep in the weeds on the details, down to the sprocket size. Your reviews are super detailed and well structured! Thanks for the great content!
You sir are a LEGEND!!
Autobahn on a 400 and pushing its limits, too cool. Great review and video.
A great video (loads of reviews on the new 400s on UA-cam at the moment, yours is the best I've seen, thank you).
Excellent video, I love it 👏
Good fun and precise description.
I had a good moment watching it.
I am going to try this surprising and handsome motorbyke 👍😁
this would be my first bike, would be getting it by mid march and I'm so excited. nice review
Did you get it?
congratulations
I took this thing for a 2h ride yesterday and the seat is surprisingly comfortable compared to all other bikes I rode. The on/off throttle can be significant in 1st and 2nd gear but not 3rd as tested here. Over all fit & finish is superb for the price and the handling is amazing. Considering that this bike costs similar or less than a mid tier e-bicycle, it’s well put together. You need to manage your power expectations though which is no fault of the bike.
I love the sound of a single cylinder. Thump, thump, thump 🎶🎼🎵
It does sound GREAT. A FANTASTIC sound.
It has NO thump. It IS SUPER SMOOTH. FACT.
I have one. An AWESOME bike.
Regards.
@@tpv59 It thumps, it's a thumper and a brapper .
@@leeinwis
Respectfully it does NOT thump. It is NOT a Thumper.
The engine/motor is SMOOTH. FACT.
Regards.
@@tpv59 Yes it does, noob.
I love your review,
Simple and covers all the essentials specs speed torque . Awesome two👍👍 for yourself sir.
Excellent review. Always count on your reviews to be objective and fun at the same time. I don’t think you talked about fit and finish but I believe it’s world class especially at the price. Quality control must be excellent. My speed 400 is being delivered now!
Scott
Great review! The Speed 400 is the most beautiful of all the small bikes. Triumph nailed it with these 400's and is going to sell boatloads of them. I'm sure they are already working on a "Bobber" version. The things they can do with that platform are endless. It's the perfect entry level bike or a fun around town type bike. Thanks for your review!
Ride SAFE and BE safe! 👍👍
So many reviews from India so far and some from here and there but your sooothing presentation.... Boom boom! Thank you!
Ordered mine last weekend, the test-drive convinced me right away that this is a wonderful machine. So light and smooth. I like the retro style, I was eyeballing the Royal Enfield (Interceptor 650) for over a year, but this is a way more smooth and fun ride and I pulled the trigger in one hour. It will accompany my F900R very wel for the laid back summer rides.
Thanks for the review, I had the same giggle as you when I first rode this; like what? Is this just 40 ponies for real? Feels real punchy, comfortable, looks cool and it is affordable. Gonna have so much FUN on this. Cruising around town.
This video earned my subscription to this channel amazing work.
Excellent review, thanks.
This was an amazing review, and just for info, the price is really good for what it offers and know that for the traffic, bad roads and conditions in india, this will do great and 400X is even better here!
Very impressive, I remember my RD400E having 40hp and weighed in at 165kg so comparable figures, that bike will be a lot of fun with a 60kg youngster on it.
Best sounding single? Pffft Sorry, pal.
I did a test ride yesterday at speeds up to 80 km/h. Very impressed with the suspension and overall ride comfort. So impressed that I'll have to make a test on the highway to verify the vibrations you mentioned, because up to 80, they are not nasty.
The ergonomics of the speed are fine for my size, 175cm.
That was such a fun video!! All I can say is that you are way braver than I am --- 165 on that thing!
Thanks for posting/sharing this video on the Speed 400 (I like the former Street name plate over Speed, but that's just me). Anyway, cheers! :)
Fantastic. Best review of the Triumph Speed 400 I have seen. I think Triumph is going to be very successful with these 400cc bikes.
I hope you test the Scrambler 400x. I would be interested to know if the 14 tooth front sprocket has any difference in vibration and highway RPM. It is also a taller and longer bike, how would the different dimensions would feel. I am going to search your vids for a Triumph 900 Scrambler or Speed review.
Again great review.
Great review Scott! Anytime I see you giggling, I know you love the bike you test ride⭐️
Perhaps when your son is old enough?
LOL, yea, he's about 8 years away from being "legal" on the streets, so that's going to be a while yet. But this would be a consideration for a beginner bike 👍👍
Have been perusing the reviews for the Speed 400 & thoroughly enjoyed this from start to finish👍
I'll definitely be purchasing this bike, but it's flying out the doors here in Australia🇦🇺
Can't even test ride one for months😣
best saddle in its class for 2 people... here in uk speed limits are coming down...at my age 58 i dont want or need to do 100mph..70mph is enough for me nowdays ive done all the bikes and speeds etc... i have found a love for the backlane..its soo much more fun..no traffic..more scenic.. cafe stops away from the crowd.. this is quite likely going to be my bike of 2024 ....
that comparison matrix is just what I have been looking for :) I was doing mine too
Glad I could help out 👍
Thanks for posting this! Getting ready to install this on my tt250. What jets did you go with?
I'd love to get your take on the refreshed duke 390. Do you have any Cfmoto dealers locally? Something like the 450NK might be a nice addition to throw into that chart.
Cheers
Come to the UK for terrible roads. Potholes are common together with surfaces dropped edges and longitudinal lines trying to throw you off. Great review with the comparisons at the beginning.
Looks like a great buy. 👍
After my 1400 B-King, I bought a 700 XSR, and now since yesterday I got this 400 speed. And it's just GREAT! 😃
People not happy about the 1st gear and RPM's at the top end could install a back sprocket with 1 or 2 less teeth. Those speeds are indicated, likely there's at least a 4-5% error or an 8 kph too much indicated at 165 KPH. Although there has been some vibes reported at around 100 KPh, it's usually not reported anywhere near what you're experiencing. Some have reported that a premium oil like Motul lessens that vibration.
Thanks for your honesty about the highway experience. Around town it's a great bike at a great price, but singles are almost never a good idea for highways, no matter who makes them.
love it!
Looks great
Scrambler rear tire is much taller. I think that plays into the front sprocket difference. I can't decide between the Scrambler/Speed yet but if I had the Scrambler I'd mount a 130/80 tire in place of the 140/80. And then install the 15 sprocket from the Speed. Good review.
Thank you for mentioning vibrations.
Same here man. Beautiful weather the last couple of days.
What about daily commuting in the city? No highways, just city riding daily (& the weekend ride out of the city). Stop-start conditions. What do you think, for a guy (5'11", 250ish lbs) is it comfortable/strong enough (suspension, seat, brakes) as it is set out of the factory?
Hmm...that's a lot of weight for a little bike. Maybe the Scrambler X might work for you, it's a little bigger, than this, I personally would take the X over this and I'm height wise an inch shorter than you and I'm about 175lbs.
But of all the bikes, on the competition chart, the X is probably the best bet for a big guy.
Great content as usual, thanks. Small correction, Speed 400 is Not the first small single that Triumph. (Old Triumph) made. The Terrier T15 (1952/3) 150cc and then Tiger Cub T20 (1953) 200 cc were the first. I enjoyed my Tiger Cub but it had many faults.
Blimey that’s going back in time (1954). Old Triumph! I think the engine was used in the BSA bantam also!
BSA Bantam was a 150/175 2 stroke (DKW clone) and the cub was a 4 stroke.
Well, in my defense, comparing a 150/200cc to a 400cc 4 stroke, hmm...
Scooters vs. motorcycles? LOL! Just where are we "drawing the line"?
Soo...my statement is correct 🤣😊👍
@@brucegordon2603 Hmm looking at some info I have pulled off the net. “ The Club engines continued to be built at Meridian, but they were transported to Small Health where they were fitted into Bantam frames. So, using the latest 199cc Club engine in a Bantam D7 chassis, the Triumph T20B ‘ Bantam Club’ was born. But I guess the two stroke engine were probably more reliable! Riding season just around the corner! I confess to being a fair weather rider.
I had a Cub, it was a small 4 stroke motorcycle with about 14 HP (on a good day). Ride it hard for about an hour and the engine would just stop working. It would start again once it cooled down. The electrics were from Lucas (the master of darkness). Triumph T20 Cub Engine 199 cc (12.1 cu in) single cylinder OHV, four-stroke, alloy head.
My age is showing. 🙂
I’d have preferred a digital speedo and an analog tachometer, Triumph seems to have it back to front although I’m sure they will sell boatloads worldwide.
2:40 sprocket is small since rear tyre is larger on X. So gearing is equalized by that.
I remember riding a Triumph Cub 200 back in the '60s. Pretty gutless so I didn't buy it. I waited a year and bought a Bonneville T120. Now that I'm an old man, this new 400 has me greatly interested! Maybe the scrambler version?
$3.5 K here in India, 6 months on it, enjoying every ride even though it’s my second bike !
Damn vibration!
very nice bike and price but i was hoping it could cruise at 110/120 without too many footpegs and handlebar vibrations.. i reckon i just have to test one
Hi! Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the Yamaha MT-03 a parallel twin engine?
There was also a 660 single version.
Yes it's a twin...321cc pushing 42hp. I've been hoping they would put that engine into a retro configuration but it hasn't happened to my knowlege.
Yep, that is a typo. In 2020 Yamaha changed the MT03 single to a twin. All the years before (over a decade) it was a single. Thank you!
How is the heat management in this bike? Does it heat up too much in the city and is the fan noise annoying? Thanks
No clue, I rode it when it was cold.
From all the Indian videos, Speedo error can be 10kphr indicated too fast at top speed (160 indicated = 150 gps). Unfortunately i cant do the ton
Looking to buy a motorcycle after 20y break
Considering this one or used SV650 for the same price
What do you think?
This looks better but he SV is more fun 👍😁
There's also Honda CB300R in this class which weighs only 145kg wet. Would be interesting seeing your take on it.
Can't get that here in Europe any more. It's not on the 2024 Honda line up in Germany. So I didn't include it in the chart. I know it's in the North American line up but the question is...how much longer?
@@NothingToProveInteresting. They still have it in countries like Spain, Greece, UK or Ireland, but apparently not in some European countries. Meanwhile India is having a refreshed version of CB300R for this year.
@@WalkinOSFJapanese are weird. Indians too are annoyed by their weird distribution choices.
I just realized that with the chain behind the exhaust, cleaning and lubing won’t be as easy as if it was on the left.
Ready to sell my 1978 Honda CB400T Hawk. The Triumph 400 would be the first "new" bike I have purchased.
I ride a Triumph but i just cant get excited about either of these two models,i havent seen them or ridden them but the thought of a short first gear just puts me off.
It IS an AWESOME bike. I have one.
Yes, first gear is a nanny gear. I NEVER use it.
Ride it and you WILL BE IMPRESED.
If triumph make a classic Bonneville 400 they will put a lot of competition on R.E.
Small correction… this isn’t the first time Triumph made motorcycles of this displacement class. It’s just a return to it after generations of hiatus.
Well under todays Triumph, that is a true statement. But also that is why I said what I said in the description.
We haven't seen the 2024 scram yet. It's rumoured to have the the new 450 engine that bumps it's power up to the Triumph 400s.
I put the RE Scram on the chart in the video, did you watch it? The Scram is a 411cc and only 24hp, nothing close to this at 40hp.
Take care,
Scott
Hello from Houston. We need royal enfield reviews, maybe classic 350?
This will be a garage mate to my BMW R1250 GSA. I’m just waiting for the US dealers to get them.
Ah Triumph used to make a 250 Tiger Cub so this is not the smallest cc Triumph they’ve ever built
Description...read it...please...
Ps tiger cub was a 200 - last bike in this arena by triumph was way back when with the 350 3TA - just shows how old I am - 1st bike I had after test 🤣🤣🤣
In the competition chart you forgot the Husqvarna Vitpilen and Svartpilen 401. I think they’re the strongest competition to these Triumph motorcycles.
It's there, it's just called the 390 🤣
@@NothingToProve I guess you’re right. Specs-wise they’re the same having the same engine and chassis. Interestingly though, all the people who have ridden the new 2024 version of the huskies swear they feel and ride differently to the KTM Duke 390 it’s based on. They all say it is a calmer riding experience against the Duke which just urges you to go on. What’s different then? Can only different handlebars and tires change a bike that much? Or maybe it’s some clever fuel mapping? I’m curious to hear your comparisons about this. Maybe you could get hold of both bikes for such a test?
Triumph did made smaller bikes Tiger cub 199cc which is the same as sport cub, Trophy 250(BSA starfire engine),sport cub 199cc.the new Triumph didn't make smaller till now.
Scooter...
@@NothingToProve no motorbikes . Triumph did make scooters 200cc contessa, Tigress,Tina etc.
I was just having some fun with you :)
Seriously, though, when I said it in the video, I meant under todays Triumph ownership, not the 1950's.
Take care,
Scott
👍🏼👍🏼
Sadly, very limited availability in the states.
Friend bought the Scrambler and he said his hands fall asleep from the vibration. I was considering one but with the tendonitis I get in my wrists I think I'll pass
That scrambler's coming cheaper than a DRZ400.
Don't forget that old RE Himalayan is not nearing last few weeks of production. The new one has equal tech and power to this.
The vibration is definitely a deal breaker.
It IS SUPER SMOOTH. I have one.
There is NO, thump thump thump. FACT.
Ride one.
It is a 400cc Single. It is what it is.
It is a AWESOME little bike.
ONLY 170 kg wet weight. ( WOW ) SO LIGHT !!!
All the best things are made in India 🇮🇳 !!! 👍👍👍
Dream on
Can you please drive RE bikes and share some insights
I've tested the Hunter and Interceptor. I didn't like either one because they felt bulky and slow to me. The hunter (20hp) had difficulty getting up over 100kph and seemed to top out at 110 kph or so. The interceptor was a nice ride, but once again it's heavy and underpowered (47hp) for a 650 twin. The RE bikes aren't the same as this Triumph, it depends upon what someone is looking for. Many RE owners are happy with their purchase.
My 1971 Honda CL450 Scrambler with 43 hp could run 105 mph.
The Honda CB300R is a closer competitor to it rather than the 500
Can't get that here in Europe (Euro5), it was phased out for the 500, I know it's still in the N.A. & U.K. markets but for how much longer?
& cc: 286 is closer to 398 than 398 is to 471
& hp: 32 is closer to 40 than 40 is to 47
If that's true I need to go back to school and re-learn basic math 🤣🤣🤣
Triumph have made smaller bikes in the past, one being the Tiger Cub. These were actually built in Britain unlike this one which is not really built by Triumph.
Looks ok, sounds like a lawn mower
Is your wife still riding her Trident 660??
Yep, she is just camera shy.
"promosm" 👍
Triumph Tina scooter was smaller 😂
Way smaller 🤣🤣
8000 euro when it has its essentials in my country. The netherlands.
Wow, that is bad!
That's why the Dutch buy them in Belgium ;)
We have to pay import taxes?@@henrietn
Shame its not a 500
