    As a stay at home mom I mostly make money by teaching piano lessons. But the other day I actually traded heirloom tomato plants I’d grown for a couple of bags of apples!

    I really liked this video. I watched it yesterday but forgot to comment. Most channels make videos about "saving money" (us included) but you talk about "making money" which I like even better. If you put your mind to it there are tons of ways you can find to make money.
    A few years back I made a "Danish for beginners" course on a platform. I had never done anything like that before and didn't have any of the right equipment. I really had no idea what I was doing (our videos have gotten WAY better now... haha). But I did it and launched it. And now, 5 years later I am still making a few hundred dollars a year on it doing absolutely nothing for it.
    Making more money is smarter than saving money! I like this video and I like you! :)

    • @theMennoniteMom
      @theMennoniteMom  5 років тому +1

      hey that's great! I've often thrown that around in my mind, but it looks pretty big to get a course started and launched! Way to go!

      Real Organized , can you explain what equipment you got to make you videos better?

    • @RealOrganized
      @RealOrganized 5 років тому +1

      TexPR1 We’ve invested in external microphones and simple studio lighting (along with a few other knickknacks). Gimbals and fancy cameras are great if you have the money, but it’s amazing how far you can get just by spending a little money (and attention) on sound and lighting.

      @@theMennoniteMom I don't think it has to be complicated as long as you can make and edit videos like you are now you should be fine you can go through sites like Udemy and Skillshare. You have to go through an approval process first, which you will be approved based on your videos here they just want to see that you have the skillset to create content, the approved me and I haven't done videos in years, I believe I used Udemy.com. You can share your knowledge on your photography, any farming or diy skills and gardening. Pretty neat stuff.Hope that helps.

    I’ve done most all these things! Some friends thought I was weird too! Glad I’ve found a likeminded person! I used to live in a Condo with a weekly garbage pickup in a giant pile at the road... soooo many ppl in our condo threw away perfectly good items. Furniture, video game consoles, perfectly adequate electronics, and my best “dumpster dive” was an antique wedding gift of fine silver cutlery. The cutlery box was wooden and everything was there and not even tarnished! Made a good penny on that one!

    Great ideas! I found your channel from Meagan Fox. I love making crafts and for about 10 years I sold my items in front of my house. I lived in the city and across the street from a dry cleaner so the ladies would come over after they picked up their clothes. I averaged 700 to 800 dollars a month and I only set up on Saturdays during spring, summer and early fall. I got a lot of custom orders, esp during Christmas holidays. It was loads of fun and I loved meeting new people.

    Thanks for sharing! Trading is awesome! There are lots of things one can do to make money, (especially when you look into it!). Find a need and fill it. Find a problem and fix it. Be creative, be passionate, know your stuff, and always err on the side of generosity. God never fails to bless the generous person. Like David said, "I have been young, and now am old, yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread." Sewing, adjusting and mending clothes is something that could be a good thing for someone to take up. Teaching others things that you know or are really good at is also worth lots. Even simple things like baking fresh bread every week and selling it. You might be surprised how many people would bite that! You don't need lots of customers, just ones that love your stuff and keep coming back because they know your quality and honesty.

Well ironically after I discovered your channel we went out to eat and there was 2 Mennonite families eating at the same time we were and it was so difficult for me not to go speak with them!

It was easy and fun, with various price points for everyone's comfort. You are SUCH a go-getter! I'm just inspired by your will to learn and solve problems/big projects many would delegate/avoid. It's almost like second-nature to you to diy, from solving electrical wiring to constructing wooden structures to acting + dramatizing your videos, to taking really professional photos, to running an Amazon business AND raising a happy child! Wow! Ofc, you, like anyone is still human and has weaknesses, but you really prove that you can overcome a lot with cheer and God's firm help!

    Trading items/services still falls under the IRS barter rules and from a business income and tax reporting standpoint you would use the fair market value of the item/service exchanged. The barter rules are designed to prevent people from claiming they made no/less money and avoid paying taxes. Of course for lower income individuals, especially those with children, using the barter rules and properly accounting for income could provide a tax benefit particularly when it comes to the Earned Income Tax Credit.
    Of course in your particular examples of "trading up" (offering a low-dollar value item for a high-dollar item) can put you into having a taxable gain if you aren't also tracking the basis of the items you are trading. Plus, if you are filing a Schedule-F for farming income you would want to determine and record the basis of the equipment/vehicles entered into service that were acquired through trade. You mention that the 3-wheeler was used on the farm to tow items, which means it was a farm asset you could have depreciated as part of your Schedule-F on your taxes. The other items traded would generate a Schedule-C profit/loss depending on their basis and (FMV) Fair Market Value as if you were buying and selling for cash.
    That point-&-shoot camera at 14:45 may have been worth $30, but what did you pay for it? Let's say you originally bought it for $80 when you first got it. Though this is technically a "loss" since the value of the camera is lower than the basis of what you paid, the "loss" is not deductible unless it was part of your inventory for a reselling business you are also running.
    Your basis in the Netbook is $30 (the FMV of the camera). Let's say the Netbook was worth $200 at the time of the trade for the camera, but only worth $100 when you trade it for the rifle. That's $100 FMV - $30 basis = a $70 gain, and your basis in the rifle is $100 because that was the FMV of the Netbook.
    Let's say the rifle was worth $250 at the time you got it, but only $150 at the time you trade it for the dirt bike. That's $150 FMV - $100 basis = a $50 gain, and your basis in the dirt bike is $150 because that was the FMV of the rifle.
    Let's say the dirt bike was worth $900 at the time you got it, but it blew the top end, you didn't you didn't replace the engine so it was only worth $750 at the time you traded it for the 3-wheeler. That's $750 FMV - $150 basis = $600 gain, and your basis in the 3-wheeler is $600, because that was the FMV of the dirt bike, but you spend $200 to have a reinforced towing hitch welded to it and that make your total basis in the 3-wheeler to $800. Since, the 3-wheeler was entered into service as part of the farming operations you would depreciate the $800 over the next 5-years. Let's say you used the 3-wheeler for exactly 1 year before you traded it for the boat. Under straight-line depreciation one year's worth of depreciation expense is $160 and so the FMV of the 3-wheeler, which becomes the basis for the boat, is $800 - $160 = $640
    Let's say the boat's FMV is $1000 at the time you trade it for the Vespa. That's $1000 FMV - $640 basis = a $360 gain, and your basis in the Vespa is $1000 because that was the FMV of the boat.
    When you sold the Vespa for $2000 (in this example) that would be a gain of $2000 sales price - basis = a $1000 gain. Lets say of that $2000 in cash, $200 was left over and you paid $1800 for the 4-wheeler and for simplicity you did this in the first week of January.
    Come tax time you would report $70 (gain from Netbook) + $50 (gain from rifle) + $600 (gain from dirt bike) + $360 (gain from boat) + $1000 (gain from the Vespa) for a total of $2,080 of Schedule-C income (minus associated expenses) and you would be able to deduct $360 each year for the next 5 years on your Schedule-F farming income as long as you don't trade/sell/dispose of the 4-wheeler before the 5th year. If you're conducting a reselling business, then the $2,080 in gains from the trades would be added to the cash sales on the Schedule-C.
    I know there's a lot of people out there that don't bother (and actually avoid) properly tracking barter income because of potential taxes. The advantage of tracking and reporting that income with the rest of sales income is that when it comes to bank loans and creditors your ability to repay looks much better and they are potentially more likely to approve loan/credit applications. So, if someone has an selling business that reports an average of $20,000 in net cash sales (but also an average of $10,000 in unreported barter every year on a regular basis), the $20,000 doesn't look as good as when the barter is reported on taxes and the bank is looking at $30,000 in average yearly income when weighing your ability to repay.
