      Both Mennonites and Quakers are still very much involved in emergency rescue, Red Cross type activities. I am Lutheran and we have the Lutheran Disaster Response organization and we are encouraged to give money to it either personally or as congregations.

    Years ago I became disabled and when I got to the point that i could no longer do the basic housework and finding that most cleaners refuse to do dishes, I was able to hire a Mennonite girl whose mother came with her for an interview. I think I was being interviewed more than the other way around! Once Mom was satisfied that I was a Christian and there would be no drinking, smoking, foul language etc. Her daughter came to work for me, I am now on my third cleaner as when they can no longer do it, THEY find someone to help me from their community. My current lady has been with me for 5-6 years now. We have become good friends. I appreciate her and her family so much. I make quilts and she knows it so when I told her how much I admired the fabric in a new dress, she brought me some of the scraps to use. God blessed me so much with this woman. I don't know what I would do without her or her community that come and Christmas carol at our home as I can no longer get out to church. While I have no problem wearing shorts or whatever at home, if I know one of the men from her family has to come over for whatever reason, I change into something more modest, which is how I generally dress. I have never figured out how a woman wearing a mini skirt/dress can stand sitting on a chair with no fabric in between her bottom and the chair, and I sure don't want to sit where she has been. Very nice blog.

      @@theMennoniteMom You don't look like a nun. I was told by one Mennonite group that the reason why the men looked more "current" was because the women's clothes had to be made in a certain style. However I have seen other groups have women wearing more "current" styles as long as it is modest. Is that true where you live?

I choose to keep the sabbath, I choose to dress modestly, etc. When you were talking about carefully following the Bible scriptures, I was reminded of a quote that I keep on my refrigerator: “There is a careful way and a casual way to live the gospel. Exactly. Like Yeshua/Jesus said “if you love me, keep the commandments.” I find the sabbath a blessing, I plan my week for it. I keep the holy days because I see them as a wedding rehearsal for the bride of Christ. I keep the dietary laws because I am a temple of Holy Spirit, and to remind me how important it is to be care what is allowed in my temple. Modesty should remind us of Christ (hence Adam and Eve’s clothes being the first burnt offering). I love my tunic instead of pants, needed something to go with my tallit. I see headcovering as a crown for a daughter of the King of the Universe, a physical symbol of a spiritual protection, hence why the wife suspected of adultery had to remove Her covering during the adultery test in Numbers 5:18.

    • @theMennoniteMom
      @theMennoniteMom  3 роки тому +18

      yes, I agree with you. In our specific church, men don't wear shorts unless it's swimming or such an activity. And we women would also were long shorts or skorts for such things. (I don't on youtube). However, in other churches where women wear skirts and blouse (often knee length skirts) then you'll see the men wearing shorts. So, it kind of goes hand in hand. Women that wear longer skirts, the men will usually wear long pants.

      I also agree. I wondered why that was too. We are holiness and we believe in modesty in both men and women. Our women wear dresses and skirts and our the men wear pants. I always wondered why I would see some mennonite men wearing shorts and even sleeveless shirts. Anyways I enjoy the channel. Thanks for sharing! And keep being a witness for the Lord! By the way, i totally agree with that you can spot other modest families while in stores or in other places. Thanks for your explanations.

I am not a "run around the house naked" kind of woman...i am very modest, even around my husband. I love maxi dresses with a little shirt over it.....I never wear tight clothes, no cleavage showing, my husband always wears a shirt and pants. He doesn't like shorts and he will not go without a shirt, except in the house with only me. I wish we would see a lot more women and men, dressing modestly.

      A healthy life does mean controlling your weight - but a better guide to health then simply measuring BMI is that a woman's waist should be less than 30 inches and a man's less than 40 inches. Any more than that denotes fat gain around the middle of the trunk which is the most dangerous for us.

    I agree with you. Clothes shopping for women can be a nightmare.
    We have very little choice, because necklines are low on almost all the garments. Then we struggle with a fabric being so thin that they are almost see through. Women have to end up wearing another undergarments underneath a top to be able to stay modest.
    Dresses and skirts in the stores are made very short.
    It can be totally frustrating to find clothing that is even reasonably modest.

    Another blessings I have found in wearing dresses only? I make my own, all from the same pattern. I have 6 “cool weather” dresses and 6 “ warm weather” dresses. That’s it! Talk about a simple wardrobe. I love the freedom now in not having a myriad of decisions to make about what to wear each day. When one of my newer dresses starts wearing out, it goes into the everyday selection that I wear at home and I make another to replace it for going out of the house. The old dress becomes rags or quilt pieces. I appreciate your candor in explaining this subject. Blessings, Betsy

    This is so interesting! My sister-in-law chose to join the local traditional Mennonite community (in BC, Canada) after attending a traditional Mennonite elementary school, and her community is much more conservative than your community seems to be, but much less than other communities. She can have coloured and patterned dresses, unlike many other communities, but her husband would never wear “trendy” or fitted jeans or tshirts. In their community the men wear store bought jeans and pants, but home sewn, long sleeve, button up shirts. It is interesting to see the many many levels of modesty!

We have always been taught modesty and I dress in a distinctive feminine and modest manner. When explaining my convictions I have been viewed as prideful which I am not. I hope everyone understands that someone can have these convictions while still loving and respecting others who may disagree. In the end we will answer to God for our own actions. So I will be kind and respectful to others who will believe differently than me. And I hope that everyone will show you the same respect to you for explaining and answering that question. I & my husband joined a mennonite church in our late 20s. (neither of us were raised that way) At first I HATED the dresses. I was already dressing modestly and wearing a covering.. I didn't feel I needed to change that. But the longer we've been in the church, the more I've realized there is a bit of "unity in spirit", for lack of a better term, for the women in it. It's also so freeing to know I can pick fabrics I love & sew a dress that will fit perfect in only 2 hours or so. You are right about being able to spot a mennonite man, or even a mennonite youth young man. There are little differences that stand out loudly to us, but not really much in society. Also, I'm thankful I don't have to sew pants for my guys!! I think you did a beautiful job explaining the differences! You're heartfelt sincerity was very touching.

    I love being able to dress modestly. I know that we who choose to dress more modestly often draw attention, but in a positive way. I have been approached and actually ”thanked” for dressing this way. I wouldn't change this for the world.

      yes! so true! I have also had similar experiences. Once, I very tough looking Harley man approached me. I forget what he said, but he was very respectful. I've noticed it various times, that men tend to treat us (modestly dressed women) more respectfully than maybe they do those that aren't. It's been a blessing.

    This is the first video that I have seen of you and I just wanted to say you explained everything so well! I absolutely loved how you explained that the way you choose to dress etc is simply letting the heart change that came from loving the Lord pour outward, (you said it so much better). I'm a Christian and I completely agree that women now days are not generally taught about modesty in society as a whole. My grandmother taught me about modesty and I was grateful for all those valuable lessons.

    I appreciate the history lesson! Thank you! I had often thought of men's suits as basically the same throughout the years but I was mostly jealous their shoes were more comfortable than mine as there is no such thing as a pair of comfortable heels in my opinion. LOL
    I'm glad you are feeling well and I wish you continued success in your journey to lose weight. I think you look great but I understand what it's like to be really sick, lose a bunch, be happy with that even though you're miserable, then finally feel great again only to eat what you want and gain it all back. I'm still trying to come out of my flare but I'm feeling much better which has led to some poor food decisions for which I always pay for but I'm learning. =) God bless!

    I had two auto-immune problems after the birth of my daughter, hyper-thyroidism and irritable bowel syndrome. The irritable bowel syndrome was so painful and I wasn’t absorbing nutrients very well. Now that I am in menopause, it only tears it’s ugly head occasionally. The hyper-thyroid caused infertility issues. I got pregnant about 2 1/2 years after her birth, but miscarried at the beginning of my 3rd month. I got pregnant a while later and had a baby boy. My daughter is 4 1/2 years older than my son. After his birth, my hyper-thyroid got even more hyper!! My hair fell out and I lost a lot of weight. I never was able to get pregnant again. I know that your son is a tender mercy and a blessing from God. I came from a big family and I am a member of a church that traditionally has large families. It is hard sometimes to answer questions from family and friends, as to why you don’t have more children. But the Lord blesses us in other ways. I now have 9 grandchildren! “The joy we feel has little to do with the circumstances of our lives and everything to do with the focus of our lives. - Russell M. Nelson

    Thanks so much for the video. I prefer when people aren't scripted on Q&A videos. I completely understand and agree with you on modesty. I am not Mennonite, but am a follower of Jesus Christ. I too, am concerned with personal modesty. I believe that each Christian must live out their faith in their own way. I know that God loves people more than anything and that as I live my faith I am led to love people, regardless of the choices they make, which includes how they dress. I think your way of dress and head covering is lovely. Thanks so much for taking the time to answer the questions. I hope you have a wonderful, blessed day!

    • @theMennoniteMom
      @theMennoniteMom  3 роки тому +6

      I completely agree with you. We are to love people and show Jesus love to them. Who did Jesus befriend? It was the poor, the prostitutes, sinners etc. Not really the religious people. But we are personally responsible for our own body's as we are the temple of the living God.

    You did wonderful at explaining everything. We as a family have chosen that the boys and men wear shirts with a collar and buttons, my husband personally has chosen to wear a long sleeved shirt every day, where as our son wears both short and long. Now our church has no rules on this things t-shirts are very much a thing and I'm not saying that that's wrong but we as a family have chosen to be this way

    In my view women stand out and dress more modest because they have never been able to adress their sexuality as man have. Historically and to an extend today their value is created by their virginity or if married the amount of children.
    In absolute contrast the womans worth in the mainstreem society is also often created by her beauty and how much she shows.
    What a double standrad!! We should just simly look much more at peoples hearts, compassion and actions! Regardless of dressing.
