@@kerbsidemobilemechanicmate I had one of these 25 years ago !!!! The oak green was what sold it to me! Was a amazing car, took it all over Europe with the family. If only I held onto that one
This is most likely a 5+ year first welding project, if you love the car then remove the engine and subframe etc and wire wheel back the rubber undercoating an inch or 2 from the rot that'll give you a good idea of how bad each area is and then you can start planning the repairs. Get your self a good gas mig welder (Rtech 180) and watch as much rust repair content on Fitzee's Fabrications channel as you can. One of the key things on these cars when welding is that you clean up the factory wax as once that starts running into the weld and gap it's a struggle from there on. Using a blow torch to heat the inside skins and wiping with a rag does wonders. Lots of patience and graft needed with these cars but worth it if you got the passion for a mk2. Hope that helps.
Definitely learn to weld. I’ve taught myself mig and stick in my spare time over the winter. Should have done it years ago, opened up a whole new world of fixes. It’s really not that hard. So many good UA-cam tutorials on how to get started. And the equipment has never been cheaper.
You won’t go far wrong, I work on tractors and boats in the field so stick (shielded metal arc) welding was a requirement. If you are only doing body work in a garage or unit just crack on with mig. I also think mig is easier. I found it quicker to pick up anyway.

Scottish cars often look like the Titanic underneath. Other areas were the roads are more heavily salted like the NE can also spell doom. I live in the SW. Cars that don't venture far don't rust much unless used on muddy lanes.

I had the same with my MK2 Scirocco. Body kit was basically hiding a complete lack of metal behind. It's now bare metal on a rollover. Not sure if I'd recommend it tbh!
@@kerbsidemobilemechanic I bought it back in 2020, tried driving it for a few months and then realised the engine was knackered and the body was rotten, so it's taken 4 years so far! Mainly because of a welder letting me down and ruining the shell, so it all needed re-doing. If I was to do it again, I would have sold it as a spares/repairs and bought another with a better shell. Keep us posted on what you do with yours chap!
Ah Kerby mate, I feel for you with this one. If it were my car, I'd sell as is and find a cleaner example, but that's because rust and bodywork are a never ending pit IMO. It looks bad enough that you'd start cutting bits out and realise it's 10x worse. If this was one you'd had for a longer amount of time - say it was one of your first cars, then sure go ahead and save it, but that deflated feeling is going to stick until you've started repairing it or gotten it sold.
Hi buddy i get vw golf mk2 (1990) manual Transmission. I am trying to buy a new CV Axle Shaft Assembly .do you mine advising me the size i may need? I don't know whether 90mm 0r 100mm will fix perfectly on it , not sure. Thanks
Yes, if you go on Mr Injector UK website and search for a 6mm x 10 injector filter you’ll find it, check out grey goose restorations channel too, fountain of knowledge on mk2 16v’s
Save it! Yeah that rust is in some quite tricky and inconvinient locations but look at the positive - It's also in an area where no one can see it, so it doesn't matter how shit it looks, as long as it's strong!
The mk1 and 2 are not increasing in number. I have four mk1. The price for one in good shape has jumped. My 79 turbo diesel is worth over twice what I paid just a few years ago. My 84 gti is worth over three times what I paid for it. The rally car? Not worth that much. But the fun is priceless. There's cars ar special.
It would be a good project but time is money if you have some downtime that's when it would make sense to do it but how often does that happen plus knowing what it's like working for yourself and trying to juggle a relationship ,besness ect your probably not spending much time at home I've got a similar problem with my classic maybe sell your one look for one with not so much structural bodywork and bad auxiliarys engine gearbox as your more geared up for that ps thanks for the advice on the A3 timing last week it's bang on chains had stretched the timing was way out good luck
No way will all that time be worth what it would end up being worth ! If he worked those hours doing what he does would be a lot more profitable and sensible
YOUD BE SURPRISED HOW EASY BASIC WELDING IS TBH (ITS THE FABRICATION THAT'S HARD), I HAD NOT WELDED FOR 30 YEARS (EVEN THEN IS ONLY RESTORED A COUPLE OF CARS AND TAUGHT MYSELF). JUST FINISHED AN MGB THAT WAS ROTTEN EVERYWHERE. FITZEE TAUGHT ME LOADS (CLEAN PANELS ARE VITAL). HIS CHANNEL IS EPIC!....ITS ALL UNDERBODY STUFF SO BEING PRETTY IS NOT A PRIORITY. GRIND DOWN THE WORST, SLAP ON SOME SEAM SEALER AND STONE CHIP AND ITS A GUD UN! GOOD LUCK PS I JUST USED A GASLESS DIRT CHEAP MIG AND IT WAS REALLY EASY TO USE AND GAVE VERY GOOD WELDS.
Those round things aren't jacking points - they are the locating points from when the car was made at the factory. They're not designed to be load bearing.
@@kerbsidemobilemechanic They're not jacking points. They were used at the factory to position the car on the production line when it was being assembled - they are made of thin metal which is very weak. You must use the sills or the point where the wishbones join the subframe at the front and the rear beam at the rear to raise a mk2 Golf.
@@kerbsidemobilemechanic Unfortunately they do look like jacking points... and people/garages keep using them until inevitably they break and damage the car. :(
Just MIG weld it up-you have a ramp which is half the battle, buy a MIG welder from machine mart and gas bottle from hobbyweld, get some thin sheet steel from Wood auto and away you go, being able to weld and save a rotten car is the best skill ever
@@kerbsidemobilemechanic The worse that can happen is it costs you some time but in the process you will learn how to weld, the outlay for a MIG welder, gas bottle+mask would prob not be much more than £200 or so, I still have my MIG I bought at machine mart over 25 years ago and I still use it!
Full restoration it will be worth money in a few years. I had a mk2 8 v and now wish I had never sold it as it was in first class condition but I used to waxoyl it every summer. Leaving it stood for 4/5 years did not do it any good.
Strip it apart and get your hands dirty, it's a small car practical to work ,try to work couple hours a month, once you start working on it you will finish it
Hold it bro...its been 4 years ..what's another year...if u hit ur sub goals by the end of the year then u might be able 2 dedicate a day 2 it...ill watch and wait till then and I'm sure everyone else will 2. Hello from NZ anyway bro!
I think you’d regret selling it. Sometimes when I get one In that’s bad and there’s a fine line with the MOT, I stick it through as it is and see what they want as a minimum for a pass and then take it from there. Probably could get it legal fairly easily and then have it as a useable work in progress, doing bits as you go 👍
Had some many MK2’s that rust isn’t too bad. If you haven’t the time get someone to weld it for you. Oak green 16v is too good to scrap and would be worth £6-8k on the road. So get it fixed!!!
Pull the boot interior away from the rear corners and check the inside structural parts are ok. I had one that had a hole in the rear arch and it had rotted away part of the inner structure.
It always looks worse than you think mate, small bites, not the best when you think it’s a bit better than it is, but there should be plenty of parts available for what you’re doing 🤞
@kerbsidemobilemechanic not if a project car of your own. Can be done at any peace. Even having a video on it once a month of progress giving you time to work on it and not having to rush on video's of updates with having your day of a mobile machine episodes.
This made me a bit sad i was ready to write that it can't be worse than mine but seems like it. To be fair mine has had some repair before i bought it. and i have almost changed everything behind the wheel as far as metal goes
Your time is money, do you want to spend time on the GTI just to sell it on, perhaps advertise it as it is as a project and move onto some thing without rust issues?
Maybe a collaboration with Grey Goose Restorations? Help you learn the skills you need.. create a bit of mk2 content for both channels and cross pollination of channels too..
I’d like to think so mate, cost of repair against what it’s currently worth in a good condition let alone what it will be worth in say another 5 years 👍🏼

Got to love Duettino “Sull'aria playing in the background!
Absolute perfect timing wasn’t it
I had the same with my MK2 Scirocco. Body kit was basically hiding a complete lack of metal behind.
It's now bare metal on a rollover. Not sure if I'd recommend it tbh!
How long has it been since you started restoring it?
@@kerbsidemobilemechanic I bought it back in 2020, tried driving it for a few months and then realised the engine was knackered and the body was rotten, so it's taken 4 years so far! Mainly because of a welder letting me down and ruining the shell, so it all needed re-doing.
If I was to do it again, I would have sold it as a spares/repairs and bought another with a better shell. Keep us posted on what you do with yours chap!
Fair enough mate, hopefully it’ll all turn out good in the end
Hello its a big job but you can weld it 👍
👍
Ah Kerby mate, I feel for you with this one. If it were my car, I'd sell as is and find a cleaner example, but that's because rust and bodywork are a never ending pit IMO. It looks bad enough that you'd start cutting bits out and realise it's 10x worse. If this was one you'd had for a longer amount of time - say it was one of your first cars, then sure go ahead and save it, but that deflated feeling is going to stick until you've started repairing it or gotten it sold.
Yeah I get that mate, see how things go, would make good content though
Bit of luck getting a workshop right next to the 'High Wycombe opera house' !!
Couldn’t have planned that any better if I tried 😂
So sorry. U can weld them back as they are worth a lot though
That’s the plan 💪🏻
Have you considered doing all the. Subframes.ect then farming out the shell to have it blasted welded up.
Oh yeah 100% let someone who’s skilled in that area do that whilst I do mechanical
Hi buddy i get vw golf mk2 (1990) manual Transmission. I am trying to buy a new CV Axle Shaft Assembly .do you mine advising me the size i may need? I don't know whether 90mm 0r 100mm will fix perfectly on it , not sure. Thanks
Hmmm not entirely sure in all honesty, best best is to check with parts supplier if they can cross reference your Reg and get correct size
Send it to shine automotive at thirsk ,north yorkshire colin will sort all the welding for you
I’ll check them out
Do you have a link or any info where you got the warm up regulator filter from? I have a similar cold start issue, thanks
Yes, if you go on Mr Injector UK website and search for a 6mm x 10 injector filter you’ll find it, check out grey goose restorations channel too, fountain of knowledge on mk2 16v’s
Thanks!
I always wanted in yr2000 a mk3 Golf Gti....a lot had issues..
Yeah I’ve had one of those too
Save it! Yeah that rust is in some quite tricky and inconvinient locations but look at the positive - It's also in an area where no one can see it, so it doesn't matter how shit it looks, as long as it's strong!
Pigeon pooh welds incoming 😂😂
The mk1 and 2 are not increasing in number.
I have four mk1.
The price for one in good shape
has jumped.
My 79 turbo diesel is worth over twice what I paid just a few years ago.
My 84 gti is worth over three times what I paid for it. The rally car?
Not worth that much.
But the fun is priceless.
There's cars ar special.
Wise words indeed 👍🏼
It would be a good project but time is money if you have some downtime that's when it would make sense to do it but how often does that happen plus knowing what it's like working for yourself and trying to juggle a relationship ,besness ect your probably not spending much time at home I've got a similar problem with my classic maybe sell your one look for one with not so much structural bodywork and bad auxiliarys engine gearbox as your more geared up for that ps thanks for the advice on the A3 timing last week it's bang on chains had stretched the timing was way out good luck
Ah yes I remember mate, glad I was able to help with that one 👍
Even if it took 10 years to restore, it’ll be in mint condition and worth even more 👍🏽
Yeah I think it’ll take 10 years too 😂😂
No way will all that time be worth what it would end up being worth ! If he worked those hours doing what he does would be a lot more profitable and sensible
Labour of love
@@kerbsidemobilemechanic love is one thing, but ones value is worth more
@@shsh-he5qg There is not 10 years worth of work there. So hardly 10 years of labour time. 10 years if you do one evening every 6 months lol
This is what I need to hear, thank mate
Ahh, the joys of 'structural patina'. Lovely.
I like your thinking there 😂
Those round things aren't jacking points - they are the locating points from when the car was made at the factory. They're not designed to be load bearing.
How can they be jacking points but not load bearing?
@@kerbsidemobilemechanic They're not jacking points. They were used at the factory to position the car on the production line when it was being assembled - they are made of thin metal which is very weak. You must use the sills or the point where the wishbones join the subframe at the front and the rear beam at the rear to raise a mk2 Golf.
I see, I always assumed they was jacking points, I’m sure that’s what I’ve always seen people refer to them as 🤷🏻♂️
@@kerbsidemobilemechanic Unfortunately they do look like jacking points... and people/garages keep using them until inevitably they break and damage the car. :(
Problem with the GTI’s is the plastic side skirts get in the way
Did you ever do your car the gti I'm doing the same
Not yet, it’s still sat in the corner of the yard
Full strip and re fit jobby. Dedicated 2 weeks of full work days. Id say about £2k max.
I’d love to have to weeks spare 😂
Go on restore it would love to watch you do it And give me some inspiration to do my one
That’s the plan mate 👍🏼
Just MIG weld it up-you have a ramp which is half the battle, buy a MIG welder from machine mart and gas bottle from hobbyweld, get some thin sheet steel from Wood auto and away you go, being able to weld and save a rotten car is the best skill ever
What’s the worst that can happen right?
@@kerbsidemobilemechanic The worse that can happen is it costs you some time but in the process you will learn how to weld, the outlay for a MIG welder, gas bottle+mask would prob not be much more than £200 or so, I still have my MIG I bought at machine mart over 25 years ago and I still use it!
Yeah exactly, even if I mess up someone else can fix it 😂😂
Full restoration it will be worth money in a few years. I had a mk2 8 v and now wish I had never sold it as it was in first class condition but I used to waxoyl it every summer. Leaving it stood for 4/5 years did not do it any good.
I think once/if I get mine done I’ll have to do the same thing
Strip it apart and get your hands dirty, it's a small car practical to work ,try to work couple hours a month, once you start working on it you will finish it
Yeah that’s it, just seems a big task looking at it
Id break it buddy that needs far to much time and money!
Yeah deffo take up too much time
Hold it bro...its been 4 years ..what's another year...if u hit ur sub goals by the end of the year then u might be able 2 dedicate a day 2 it...ill watch and wait till then and I'm sure everyone else will 2.
Hello from NZ anyway bro!
Yeah man, what’s another 4 years 😅
I think you’d regret selling it. Sometimes when I get one In that’s bad and there’s a fine line with the MOT, I stick it through as it is and see what they want as a minimum for a pass and then take it from there. Probably could get it legal fairly easily and then have it as a useable work in progress, doing bits as you go 👍
Yeah good suggestion mate 👍
feel your pain 10:55 . ooft.
💔💔
Or give it away in a raffle 🤔 I'd bring it back to life 💪🏴
Haha proper UA-camr when you start raffling cars off 😂
Had some many MK2’s that rust isn’t too bad. If you haven’t the time get someone to weld it for you. Oak green 16v is too good to scrap and would be worth £6-8k on the road. So get it fixed!!!
I’d like to think in good condition it would be worth over or around 10k?
Pull the boot interior away from the rear corners and check the inside structural parts are ok. I had one that had a hole in the rear arch and it had rotted away part of the inner structure.
Oh dear I’m scared to look now 😂😂
Take your time and get it done
Think that’s the plan 👍
@@kerbsidemobilemechanic I'm currently getting an ABF engine into my MK2 golf but will need to sort out rust after.
Why not a VR6 swap?
@@kerbsidemobilemechanic bcuz I had a 16v sitting around
Fair enough 👍
It always looks worse than you think mate, small bites, not the best when you think it’s a bit better than it is, but there should be plenty of parts available for what you’re doing 🤞
Thats the good thing Heritage parts will do loads for it and The likes of mk2 spares also
Keep the wheels and new shocks and get rid.
Cant drive shocks and wheels 😂😂
I have 1 ❤ 2 .? Its not quiet that bad.
4:04 hi mi is eero kid JC
Who like this car.
No it could be worse 😅
Was about to say maybe do bit by bit over the weekends but than need to have time to spend with the family
Doesn’t have to be done quick I guess
@kerbsidemobilemechanic not if a project car of your own. Can be done at any peace. Even having a video on it once a month of progress giving you time to work on it and not having to rush on video's of updates with having your day of a mobile machine episodes.
Yeah that’s it mate 👍
This made me a bit sad i was ready to write that it can't be worse than mine but seems like it. To be fair mine has had some repair before i bought it. and i have almost changed everything behind the wheel as far as metal goes
Heart breaking seeing it but in all honesty it’s not TOOO bad, everything can be fixed
@@kerbsidemobilemechanic Yeah that's the spirit :)
full resto job needed to do it right will be worth it in the end
Many hours work but yes deffo worth it after I’d say
Your time is money, do you want to spend time on the GTI just to sell it on, perhaps advertise it as it is as a project and move onto some thing without rust issues?
Yes that is true But cant be all work And no play
It’s a shame really as someone’s gone and spent £700 on a set of B12’s but ignored all the rot 😅
Yeah, this idiot over here, was the first thing I ordered years ago as soon as it was home, as the coilovers on it were absolutely knackered
Ring mathewsons bangers and cash and get some money back . Big up from Scotland mate
👍
Sell it cut youre losses if at a later date you take off on youtube buy another and do a full strip down acid dip the chassis and rebuild to original
Yeah could do, I bought it years ago cheap enough and there’s no real rush to get it done so will see how we go 👍
Vehicles from Scotland are always a risk, I know from painful experience.
I did buy a mk5 gti from Scotland and the rust was pretty bad on that too 😂
Maybe a collaboration with Grey Goose Restorations? Help you learn the skills you need.. create a bit of mk2 content for both channels and cross pollination of channels too..
I think that’s a great idea mate
Put it through a mot . It’ll tell you exactly what you need to do to put it back on the road
Good idea 👍
My dream motor
You can have it for £50 😂😂
Mensen vragen de hoofdprijs voor zulke auto’s en als je ze op de brug kijkt , komt de narigheid om de oren
Yes it’s surprising what is hidden underneath sometimes
Full resto or move it on !
Might have to be full resto as won’t be worth much in metal lol
Ive seen worse and repaired worse, i would help out a day here and there 👍 save the mk2
I’ll hold you to that one mate 😅
@kerbsidemobilemechanic I would be happy to help out Kerby, good mk2 golf's are hard to find and my welding is pretty sensible.. no patch ups

Do a full restoration or sell it now. 👍
Leaning towards full resto 👀
Would make cracking content 👍@@kerbsidemobilemechanic
Agreed pal
if the car is worth it take it to Yorkshire Car Restoration they will make it like new again
I’d like to think so mate, cost of repair against what it’s currently worth in a good condition let alone what it will be worth in say another 5 years 👍🏼
@@kerbsidemobilemechanic I meant, if it's worth more to you than the sale then do a full restoration.
If it is only for sale, the choice is quickly made
Oh yeah agreed, but think she’s a keeper for now
Its only for an entusiast that does not count the hours. Sell or scrap and sell the parts..?
Restore it
@@kerbsidemobilemechanic Will be interesting to watch. Please count every hour so that everyone can get a clear picture of what it takes to get a job like that done.
Ooh good idea thanks 👍
Will cost £10k in body work, £2k in parts,
If you break it up you'll learn a lot about it for the next restoration and maybe get £2k in sale of parts, gearbox £400, engine £500, interior £250, wheels and tyres £350, it's about the maths and your time. The decision looks clear.
I’d rather sell it for a grand and not waste the time if I was going down that route, still undecided, we’ll see 👍
If your going to do it do it in stages too many people completely strip and lose interest once welding done rest would fall into place
Yeah probably, stripping it is the easy bit
She ain’t too bad, put her to one side, she’s not going down in value. When you’ve got 50k subscribers you can learn to weld (it ain’t hard) and restore her (on your channel)👍
Good idea 👍
It's a classic. Please fix it.
Haha seeing as you asked so nicely lol
The car is not even that bad esp considering it is 30+ years old, there are much worse rotboxes out there that have been saved
Oh for sure way worse have been saved
Mmmmmmmmmmmm full resto needed... Mmmmm hard decision.. would struggle to say goodbye. Put 20 quid on each customer job ... Then use that to get it done .
Haha that wouldn’t be very decent of me 😂
I know bud just a thought... 😂🤣 Funny though..🫣🫣 I'd keep it and slowly do it when things are slow.. these will go up in value even more as time goes by.. I've got a problem with mk 4 ,s ex vag myself
That’s the saving grace, if it takes another 4 years to restore it’ll have gone up in value even more
Meg tudod javítani, de kicsit időigényes!
Yeah definitely, but will be worth it
Just find a donor and transfer everything over job done.
How would I know the donor isn’t as bad?
@@kerbsidemobilemechanic if you join the Facebook groups mainly 'mk2 golf no scammers group' and 'mk2 golf UK classifieds' you should find something if not you will have plenty of help moving forward.

Don't you know someone to weld it for you as if you do all the work stipping it down prep it all for welding then the person just has to come it and weld it myself ive welded alot worse and the body looks good has it got a good engine but leaving it outside for 4 to 5 years didn't help and like you said its a 90s vw promise you fords are alot worse mate
