Single stage paint thats gotten super old and baked will just rub off. The majority of the black color on the top before washing was debris and mold from years of sitting. Sort of like our silver 244, looked black on top.
Mold isn’t just an unsightly problem; it poses a genuine health and safety concern. When you think of mold, you might picture it clinging to the corners of an old basement or on stale bread, but cars can, quite alarmingly, provide the perfect breeding ground for this stubborn fungus. Especially in environments laden with moisture and organic materials, the threat is ever-present. Mold can release harmful spores into the confines of your car, leading to an array of health problems ranging from respiratory issues to severe allergic reactions.

Really cool car. I hadn't seen a 242 before, I was aware of the Bertone ones but this is really cool. Love the big turbo badges. My parents had a 240 estate in England back in the 90s. I think restore to best would be cool. Have a subscribe, looks like u love your volvos! I finished an 8yr classic mini resto last yr
Welcome to the channel! We are a little sick in the head with Volvos. I could have worse habits!
Yes, full paint. Maybe we can do both our 242s black at the same time.
I’m going to powder coat my Virgos bronze-ish gold, then gold pinstripe. A la John Player Special racing livery from the 1980’s. A period-correct mod.
That might be the perfect combo! I'm concerned about 15in tire sizes though :(
@@DeanofMachines That's why I went Hydra on my cars. Selection of performance tires was much better even as far back as 2004. Supposedly there's a better selection in the 205/55R15 size, though.
@@john242ti Even 15's the selection is minimal. Not everything needs 20 inch wheels!
Замечательная машина. Жаль таких сейчас не делают. Успехов вам в востановлении. Буду следить за ней.
"Wonderful car. It's a shame they don't make things like this anymore. Good luck to you in your recovery. I'll keep an eye on her."
I appreciate the love! 240's were made a very special way. They are perfect!
Wow. That is 14k $ upwards here in norway.
It's amazing how valuable these cars have become!
Make it two tone. Silver on black..... Nice save.
That's an interesting thought... I'll put it on the board!
Great find Dean! My favorite 240. Interested to see which way you go either keeping the old kjet system or going for efi. Manual swap in the works, too?
Have all parts for manual swap. Have not decided on if the kjet stays. I just want drivability.
I was hoping the same. Nothing like 3 pedals for driver involvement. Greetings from Australia. The 242GT is a very rare beast down here.
@@benspencer9523 Helloo from the US! Welcome to my little corner of the internet. I'm assuming the 242 is more rare there than it is here. Did you get the 242 turbo and 242gt as separate models?
@@DeanofMachines we didn't get the turbo at all Dean. Although I have seen one for sale with the correct turbo set-up that the owner had imported from Europe.
Dean, find yourself a little time and Google Robbie Francevic and or John Bowe Volvo Group A touring car. These two changed a lot of perceptions about Volvo with a " typical " Ford or General Motors fan Down Under with their extraordinary feats in the flying brick. I know, as I was a Holden fan as a kid, probably only because my father had a succession of Holden taxis. To this day, some 40 years later I'd still happily own one but due to their scarcity down here they are not cheap. Currently on our biggest National car selling site there are only two for sale.
It's Carsales if you're interested in the market here in Oz Dean.
Take care and have a great day.
@@benspencer9523 I'm assuming you didn't even get the GT then! I'm actually familiar with the group A cars of that era. Such cool little cars!
Interesting car! Here in Sweden there were only 244 and 245 with Turbo-engines. 242s with Turbos must have been all exported.
I learned about that in a comment yesterday! I'm very surprised you did not get the 242 turbo.
@@DeanofMachines they are very rare cars, even in America. I just got offered 35000$ for mine . ❤️
@@janfredriklarsen9698 Don't sell!! Keep it for life!
Cool car. Love the front. Rare too.
Previously, I have claimed to dislike this front end. I will admit it's growing on me.
242! 😊Very nice!
Only the finest of sports cars around here!
This seem to be a very good one to me... No major rust... complete original car... I wish i could find one like that around here with that CIS B21FT engine.
Its taken a loooong time for me to find one I liked enough to buy. Just keep an eye out and be ready. This one came to me after another deal fell through and I was telling a friend about it. You never know!
I have never seen paint just fall off like that
Single stage paint thats gotten super old and baked will just rub off.
You arent wrong!!
I’m so confused 😮. Why is paint on the hood and trunk and roof looks like that?
Its because of sunlight. Lots and lots of hot bright sun.
242 TURBO WoW
I said the same thing!!!!
Omg rare and beautiful car, I wish I could find one near my home in the same conditions
They are hard to find!! It took a long time searching before I found this one.
@@DeanofMachines Yeah i guess so, never put it to trash i swear. And good luck for the repairs as a supportive volvo fan !
@@sugiuwara4266 thank you!!! Fortunately I have many parts!!
@@DeanofMachines hell yeah, I just got bought a Volvo 340 diesel today and drove it across france, man it's so good
@ that sounds like a great trip!!
Put a coat of lacquer over it as is and get it mechanically sorted. Be a great daily. I’d love this
I like the way you think!!
1988 my high school friend bought him a 240 then this Turbo in 1989 to go to university in boulder Colorado ..
Starting a car not best idea
Oil , fuel .. how long was in last started
These old turbo cars struggling when they were new. They are good little cars though
That's a beauty. Would love one like that but they are all but impossible to find in the UK. I've seen two. One for about £22,000 ($28,000) in mint condition, and a totally rotten one for about £1,000 ($1,300) and nothing in between.
Its been tough finding one that I was comfortable with. This one just kind of fell into my lap.
Do you really play the Gramophone?
@@DeanofMachines I inherited a collection from my late father that was his grand fathers. It goes back to 1904. I don't really listen to them but did upload many of the unusual ones to my UA-cam channel. Some are quite rare and are the only copies known to exist.
My oldest is from 1903 - which really blows my mind, though it sounds awful. I have some from 1908 that sound much better. ua-cam.com/video/vemgXlEyjdQ/v-deo.html
@@TheGramophoneGirl That's really cool!!! The namesake of this youtube channel is based on my interest of all mechanized things which include antique instruments! The Volvos just seem to get the most love and match what I'm doing most recently. You've got a new subscriber!
@@DeanofMachines thank you, appreciate it.
Wow fantastic find wish I was that lucky !
They are out there! Just have to look constantly for years!
Imagine finding that here in sweden, worth a lot of money😊
I could only imagine!!! I would love to road trip through Sweden!
Yea I got lucky last year and found an 83 244 turbo the greatest thing is I can get all the parts I need on ipd
We are very fortunate to have as many parts companies as we do!
To convert to flat hood, do you just need a new center grille?
Hood and grill. Easy as pie!
Honestly, that's in GREAT shape, structurally... just needs a good clean, some trim... some minor rust touch ups... some mechanical service and she's good to go ! I've seen a LOT worse, especially up north where they salt the roads. Volvo's hate salt !
This car is on deck for a good clean up! Check out our other videos on this car!!
@@DeanofMachines I'm envious... I've had a 1976 244 DL ... and then a 1982 244 GLT in metallic black (black leather interior) with Euro headlights LOVED that car! ... and this one reminded me a LOT of that car. GOLDEN find... treat it well ! It's a survivor and worthy of keeping around. That floor and body looks amazing. Those rims are perfect for that car and probably the best that Volvo has ever made. Both my Volvos had rust from our Northern climate, but I kept them going as long as I could back in the day, wish I still had them now. ENJOY!
@ yea I agree!! I can’t wait for this car to be something cool!!
The 242 looks great in grey and black 🤣
Thank you! We think so too :)
Take care of it, switch oils 2 times a year and these will last you a lifetime. If you crash it, you might crack earth in half thou :D
The 240 is one of my favorite cars ever!
Do you ever sell your volvos? Im curious about the 2 series volvo wagon
Well, everything has a price I suppose. Feel free to shot me an email, info@deanofmachines.com
Lol hey what color did you say that was?! Surprise two tone! I second the restoration suggestion.
I have been itching for a full paint project.
i love it , thanks mates a sought after car in my book
Thank you! These are not very common for sure!
Dream car if it was manual and black interior
Exactly how I want it to be!
You have a good taste in Cars! Greetings from Sweden were it came from! 😊
Hello again! I appreciate all of your comments! Honestly, I really enjoy seeing you comment on all the videos. It means you love these cars as much as I do!!
About time you got a real 240.
Right? This is actually the first 242 I have ever sat in.
@DeanofMachines my first volvo was a 1986 244, then I found a clean 744na that I still have. When I went to buy it the guy turned out to have a buch of old volvos. My 1982 242 glt turbo was half under a car cover in a car port. I asked him if he wanted to sell it. I had to have a turbo two door. He was like I might someday. Then 3 years later he calls Mr up and tells me it's running and for sale. Patience is always the answer.
@@volvosruinedmylife That's awesome! What a cool story. I like to think that every has that kind of luck at some point. Patience is key!
I had 82 ipd with the intercooler.. I miss it ... Looks the same..
Nice car!
The body is MINT by salt belt standards. Sounds like some pretty uneven compression while cranking, though. PS: 2024 - year of the 240 @ MM!
I feel like the video didnt even do it justice!
Paint is only original once.
This is very true.
