Thanks. If I get under car at all, I use a stand (as you can see in the fuel hose footage). Having a car fall on you must be one of the worst ways to go especially for a car fan 🥺
Stunning. Wish I still had my Schwartz Black valver on a 'H' plate. Sold it 15yrs ago for £2k. No car has ever turned heads like it. I couldn't go anywhere without people commenting or asking about it. I even had people posting letters asking if I wanted to sell it. Regrets eh?!
The 16v was always the needy one, not sure if it was because they were always 'frashed' or just because they weren't as tough. Also Digifant looks after itself largely, K Jet had so many little bits and pieces that all had to be in sync for it run right, many of which were unavailable 10 years ago. Has that improved now the cars are worth more? If I was buying a Mk2 for track, it would have to be a 16v as it's so lovely to wind it up something you can't do that much on the road these days.
I notice a lot of your vehicles are stored outside which is fine but at the very least buy a proper outdoor cover for them particularly the R8 or in fact any of them. It really helps with the bodywork.
I've actually got a cover for the R8 ready to go on. Just want to polish and wax the paint before. Covers are a mixed blessing and can do a lot of damage especially in the high winds we've had recently
@@volkswizard I agree about the potential for some damage. I went with the manufactures covers for mine and they worked out well. They don’t last forever I found about 2years before they started to perish and leak. I’m sure you know make sure the car is bone dry before you put it on
The exhaust is effectively brand new and still sooting up its seals, when I tested for fuel leak after redoing the pipe clips, look out for liquid, that's condensation from within the exhaust system leaking out of a joint. (Yes I do need to use it!)
That's a good question. I've checked the part numbers and aside from the manifold and connecting pipe the parts are the same for both. With OEM, 16v had a bigger bore so they didn't cross over. I'd have thought the 16v connecting pipe would be to connect their system to the original manifold but it's also used with the Milltek one. Best drop them a message as I am sure there is a good reason. The good news is that you get the same silencers so it should sound similar to mine (as similar as 8v and 16v can be).
Sold my Mk2 Golf GTi 8v last year, but i really really miss it now. You knew you were driving something special, like some exotic supercar with the looks and comments i'd get. I can't get remotely near that feeling driving my Mk7.5 Golf GTi PP
Give the 7.5 a few more years and it will be regarded in similar esteem, possibly even more so, considering the white goods EVs we will be forced to buy then
Hi Andrew What a beaut, here in South Africa my buddy owned one in the 90s and was an absolute gem...it was a 5 door version 1.8 ltr 16V That motor use to rev up to the red line with such progression and had such long legs through the gears and as for the bodywork it was built like a tank Definitely one of the best GTIs ever if not the best in my opinion Makes todays GTIs seem as if they lost all the character simply because today you dont need much skill to drive one like a pro, the car does it for you
That is correct Craig, it was retrimmed at great expense by last owner, got the receipt somewhere. They often come unstuck and from the foam backing - headliner is probably the crappiest bit of a Mk2!
I know! Luckily tester was happy to record a fail but then fixed it for me FOC, the horn is in the middle of the steering wheel and it's a bit crap, easy to fiddle with it and have it stuck down permanently!
Great update and lovely car. Mine is almost exactly the same - including needing similar body attention. So enjoyable and easy to work on. I would recommend upgrading to 16v or G60 front brakes - so much better for driving with current traffic. I have G60s and they are spot on!
Nice to see the mk2 come out of hibernation for some tinkering and upgrades - front discs look tiny - smoking whilst changing fuel line clips could make life interesting 🤓😝
239mm discs, I don’t think it’s too hard to upgrade to the 256mm from 16v but if you are going to do that might as well go 280 from G60. TBH they seem to work ok now so new parts should see enough of a performance uplift without adding weight 👍
You know what 🤔 I like driving older cars because they don’t beep at u like crash detection when ur nowhere near a collision or you don’t have to turn new tech of like lane assist etc just get in and drive and I forgot u had ur GTI 8v lovely looking Golf 👍👍
I have owned 4 golf cars. My first was a new GL in 1980, followed by a GL cabrio bought used then the GTi campaign(lovely car) and lastly another used GTi cabrio which I had for 15 years
Thanks for the ownership history Peter, all good cars but I'd go for the 1980 GL just because it's quite a rare car. I really wanted a Mk1 Golf 1.5 GX back in the day but insurance was too much and when I could afford it, a Mk2 GTI wasn't much more.
Thanks Aaron, you're not the first person to recommend MCC. They are top of the list, I'd just want to see if anyone who can also do a good job wants to work with me on the videos. If you approach a bodyshop for a quote before discussing the videos, you end up paying full retail whack and giving them a lot of free advertising, done that before, would like to avoid it this time but if I can't I can't.
Hi Andrew. I will be going to the GTI Fanfest 24 so will bear your comments in mind. For me really it's a "dry run" for what I hope will be the 50th Anniversary for the GTI in 2026.
Hi Andrew glad to be back only realised recently I had unsubscribed probably my 5 year old when he’s been grabbing my phone! So pleased to see the mk2 back on the channel and some very good repairs and plans there to get the car back to its best All the best to you and Kate looking forward to future videos and lots to catch up on! Daniel
Greg is brilliant but too good and too expensive for a car like this that I want to use. My Up! GTI was sold in the autumn. Will do a garage update video soon👍
Looks OK on camera but in reality not so good but solid, which is the most important thing I guess - nearly £4k of bodywork gives you a better insight into cosmetic condition than even pics or video :)
Very nice video. Golf II never loses its beauty !! Always be well and enjoy the road. I also had a Syncro GT 05-03-1992, I bought it new with ABS. There are times when I really miss this car. I sold it in very good condition in 2004 with only 140,000 km and everything on it original and first hand.
Unfortunately, MK2’s are nonexistent here in Florida. I would be surprised if I could find a MK5 ! In decent condition….. Love your MK2, hold onto that one. Thanks, RickGTI….. 🌴
Here in the USA we received mostly Mexico production after 1988 of the Golf II.... Neither US made or Mexican made Golf had great assembly or in some cases even identical parts were from substandard suppliers for cars made in both countries. The best were always made in Germany.
I don't a Mk2 has much in common with a Mk7 which is my next oldest Golf. It's very subjective but there are 2 reasons why I kept the MK2 1) There's a lot more I can do to the Mk2, Corrado was done bar a big bill at Stealth for an engine rebuild at some point 2) The Mk2 means more to me than a Corrado as I met my wife when I had one, 100s passed through my hands etc
Thanks David! I honestly didn’t plan it in advance and spent longer than you might imagine trying to find an exploding mk2, that one was running lpg apparently 💣
Really enjoyed this video a lot and does make me hanker for one again . I think you offering to look at any potential buys for anytime is a lovely thing to do .

Nice car. I'd recommend using a jack stand in addition to your floor jack. Safety First!
Thanks. If I get under car at all, I use a stand (as you can see in the fuel hose footage). Having a car fall on you must be one of the worst ways to go especially for a car fan 🥺
Why not just reverse onto ramps?!
Blimey 15 years ago it was attracting all that attention?! That explains all the attention mine gets today, might take some getting used to :)
Love my mk2 16v, but i think the 8v is an easier engine to live with, particular the later digifant version! :)
The 16v was always the needy one, not sure if it was because they were always 'frashed' or just because they weren't as tough. Also Digifant looks after itself largely, K Jet had so many little bits and pieces that all had to be in sync for it run right, many of which were unavailable 10 years ago. Love the Mk III golfs and always happy to see one on the road.i do wonder though, how did it pass the mot with a split CV boot? That's a failure.

the back axle, at 3 minutes odd is it just a rust scab or a cut on the back axle?
Just looked 3:40 and it's a drip of lube from the exhaust fitting, the rear silencer joint is right above it.
I think you have exhaust leak. It sounds like mine mk3 8v on cold start with broken studs on cyl 1 but gets quiet after warm up.
The exhaust is effectively brand new and still sooting up its seals, when I tested for fuel leak after redoing the pipe clips, look out for liquid, that's condensation from within the exhaust system leaking out of a joint. (Yes I do need to use it!)
Fit corrado brakes. Best mod ever and also 16v servo
Hello Andrew, do you know if the Milltek you fitted will fit the 16 valve? They only sell a full system including the manifold for my 16 valve.
LED headlights will make a big improvement at night.
Electric air conditioning...
The car must retain its Mk2 characteristics

@mufasa6511 - Sad we don't see them on the roads here in SA anymore... Even Citi Golfs are disappearing!
Good video Andrew... What headlining is in your mk2? It doesn't look standard? Has it be flocked? Or trimmed in something different from original?
That is correct Craig, it was retrimmed at great expense by last owner, got the receipt somewhere. They often come unstuck and from the foam backing - headliner is probably the crappiest bit of a Mk2!
Failed MOT for the horn is so frustrating! Nice to see the update video. Thank you
I know! Luckily tester was happy to record a fail but then fixed it for me FOC, the horn is in the middle of the steering wheel and it's a bit crap, easy to fiddle with it and have it stuck down permanently!
Kinky

BINGO! None of us enthusiasts want a nanny holding our hand while driving!

The underside is in great condition, its definitely a keeper to use for a drive on a nice day
love the sense of humour in this video! 15:50 😂. Best VDUB ever 🏆
Great to see mk2 back on the channel! Looking forward to seeing more 👍🏻
The cigarette joke got me, aha. It's good to see this beauty back on the channel.
Check out MCC body repair in Banbury. Matty is a top lad and has a mk2 golf his self!
Thanks Aaron, you're not the first person to recommend MCC. They are top of the list, I'd just want to see if anyone who can also do a good job wants to work with me on the videos. Greg Howell at Southam Bodies was always the best in the business. What’s happened to the up!? Looks like a really solid mk2 👍🏻
Greg is brilliant but too good and too expensive for a car like this that I want to use. My Up! GTI was sold in the autumn. Will do a garage update video soon👍
What a beaut Andrew 🙏

@@volkswizard ouch …. 😳
@@volkswizard As James Bond once said, "She's a beauty." 😉

We noticed that when we got the New Beetle made in Puebla and the Mk5 Golf Estate, both of which had a different feel to the German cars.
MK2 8v GTIs are the best!
I think I might have to agree with you Hugo 👊🏻
Brilliant, the GTI lives again. Hopefully a year of golf upgrades
Hi Andrew . Is your mk2 8 valve for sale,
I had one! '89, same colour. Great car.
I would have kept the Corrado over this. You already have a Golf so Corrado more interesting.
I don't a Mk2 has much in common with a Mk7 which is my next oldest Golf. loving MK2 content 👍
Glad you enjoy it Jay!
I almost forgot about this one
Me too😆
The cigarette bit was hilarious 😂
Thanks David! I honestly didn’t plan it in advance and spent longer than you might imagine trying to find an exploding mk2, that one was running lpg apparently 💣
There was a Swan solo in Torquay harbour 2 weeks ago. So maybe they got separated in the awful storms. 😢
Wonderful glad to see her back😊👍
Really enjoyed this video a lot and does make me hanker for one again . I think you offering to look at any potential buys for anytime is a lovely thing to do .
Wish id never sold my Oak green 2 dr.
Finally a video from the mark 2! Your right to never sell it and enjoy it as much as you can👍
Lovely car , but was never impressed with the dull steering wheel
I have a 54000 mile mark4 V5 in Jass Blue for sale might you be interested
It looks like atlas grey
I know you prefer to leave the car as standar, but the car itself asking desperately for a coilovers and reduction or lower suspension.
The car's not standard, it got Koni top adjustable dampers, can't recall what springs as it sits lower than a lot of 8vs though could be stock that have dropped a bit. Not sure about Instagram like but this is THE perfect setup for driving on UK roads, coilovers on cars this light most definitely are not. #lowerisslower 😉
Eibach springs I think. Might say on Stealth receipt
