    This is probably the best review of a Victorinox pocketknife here on UA-cam!

    This was a great video, very well made, and exactly what I was looking for. Not just a theoretical discussion of what a Swiss army knife can do, but someone actually showing how they use the knife on a daily basis. Thanks!

      A pair of leather gloves would be nice.
      You could use the back of the saw blade held Tightly about mid-way for Good Grip.
      If the blade closes No Injury...

    I use the can opener and bottle opener on my Victorinox Tinker all the time. I love it. I've used the saw on my One handed Trekker to cut through a three inch mesquite branch. It took some work to get through the heart wood but it got the job done.

    At 07:24 you said you don't know what steel Victorinox uses, I'm happy to help you with that.
    Here is the official answer from Robert Elsner himself !
    Thank you for your e-mail and participation on Baselworld 2013. I am sorry not to have replied earlier, which I greatly regret. However, I am pleased to answer your question.
    The Victorinox laboratories incorporate the latest standards of engineering. They guarantee that only steel and plastic, which comply with our rigorous quality standards, are used in the manufacturing of our products. The steel consists of special alloys, which possess those material characteristics that are most important for the respective field of application. We use a stainless steel alloyed with chromium and molybdenum to make blades for pocket tools (SAK, SwissTool etc.) and household knives.
    Material DIN Used for…
    1.4110 x55CrMo14 Blades
    1.4031 x39Cr13 parts
    1.4021 x20Cr13 springs
    for other Victorinox knives
    1.4034 x46Cr13 blades
    Material short name C [%] Cr [%] Mo [%] V [%]
    1.4110 x55CrMo14 0.48-0.60 13.0-15.0 0.50-0.80 ≤ 0.15
    x high-alloyed
    55 0.55 % carbon
    Cr 14 % chromium
    Mo molybdenum
    V vanadium
    Hardening makes knives hard, elastic and provides them with the edge-holding ability. The more carbon the steel contains, the harder and sharper it can be made during the hardening process, but the less resistant it will be to rusting. Conversely less carbon makes the rust resistance better but the edge-holding ability worse. Steel becomes stainless when it is alloyed with at least 12 % chrome, which must be dissolved in the basic matrix. The hardness of the steel is tested using a Rockwell testing device. After hardening and annealing, the blades have a hardness of 56 HRC. In principle, the greater the hardness the better the edge-holding ability of the steel. But this also depends on the particular geometry of the blade. As the Rockwell hardness increases the steel also becomes more brittle and prone to fracturing.

      @@JunkyardFox Good thing that, I sure will check out! Noticed that you have a few Mora on review and since I'm from Sweden 🇸🇪 myself obviously I will have to see what you think about them! I've grown up with Mora knives, everything from being a boy scout to the military service to now having a Mora Bushcraft for around campfires and such. Funny thing how you easily miss what you've got just around the corner cause to me it's always just been a standard knife and the Swedish Fällkniven the stuff of dreams. I've recently started to reevaluate my view of Mora and gained a lot more respect!

    07:00 It’s cool that you can use the back of the wood saw to scale fish. Normally when outdoors I carry the Swisschamp, which has a dedicated fish scaler. I just haven’t gone fishing since I’ve bought the knife yet 😂

    Ive had the bigger brother of that knife for ten years now - the workchamp - and even though it is huge, it somehow turned into my edc knife. I find myself using it all the time for various different tasks, at home, in the office or outdoors. Love the blade - haven't sharpened it since I got it and it is still razor sharp. Just swipe it on leather after use and it is fine. Such a great and versatile tool! You have shown that very well in that video!

    Great review, that model is almost the same as the Rucksack with 3 differences. A different locking mechanism, philips screwdriver instead of a corkscrew and a locking bottle opener. I love my Rucksack and it is my EDC knife. The Trekker would be just as handy.

    Once you get the hang of it, the can opener on the Vic is the best. The fastest to open a can and leaves no sharp edges. I use it all the time, even at home I prefer it over larger 'dedicated' tools.

  • @BrokenCurtain
    @BrokenCurtain 2 роки тому

    I've had that knife for over ten years, but I found out early on that it's a bit too large and heavy for me to carry it around as an EDC knife. It's also a bit intimidating if you pull that thing out in an urban setting to peel an apple or something like that.
    So I got a Victorinox Cadet, which I always carry in a pocket in my pants. It's very unobtrusive and the smaller size is perfect for smaller tasks. I still have the Trekker, but it sits in my backpack most of the time. I'm still glad to have it, though, because those two knives complement each other nicely, TBH.

    Check out the Victorinox Spirit Multi Tool. It is the absolute best Multi Tool out there and besides that it has a great pair of pliers plus a chisel that is perfert for a ferro rod striker. I have two Trekkers but no longer carry one after discovering their Multi Tool. I wish you lived closer, I have a very special EDC knife, a Cold Steel Holdout 1, that I modified to open as you pull it from your pocket. The blade is about 6 inches and yet it looks like any other knife that you see many people carrying clipped in their front pocket. The locking system on this knife was tested by Cold Steel and held a 325 lb. weight. I bought both of these products off of E-Bay.

    I’ve been close to buying this knife a couple of times now, I really like that it doesn’t have the wine corkscrew. I think those are completely useless items to carry. The things that have stopped me from purchasing it is I like the easy open blade like your original, but I hate the serrations and secondly they do not offer any kind of pocket clip. I have a bad habit of losing anything without one and have just become used to them on any kind of folding multitool. Maybe one day they will offer a variation with those changes. Other than those two items and I would happily carry one. For now it’s a Leatherman for my edc. Great vid and I like the idea for the review ring.

      keep in mind that they sell a one hand opening, non serrated version too. as for the pocket clip, im more of a pouch guy. you can get a magazine pouch at any army surplus store, fits there really good. www.amazon.com/dp/B001DZT0M0/?tag=aiponsite-20&linkCode=ic5&ascsubtag=amzn1.idea.22GDEO1GLL9AJ&creativeASIN=B001DZT0M0&ref=exp_junkyardfox_lv_dp_vv_d

    Excellent real world review of the Victorinox Trekker, which is vying for my attention with the Forester model, and, I plan on buying one of those folders in the coming weeks.
    However, I will always have a very warm spot in my heart for my well used Camper, and as soon as I make up my mind about the Forester, or Trekker, the Camper will be rotated with an Emerson Horseman for EDC.

      @@steveharaldson7518 So I actually picked up a One hand Trekker and its a totally different beast. I personally like the s.s. they use on SAKs because it is super corrosion resistant. I used one throughout a ceramics class for cutting and shaping wet clay. It never developed a spot of rust. Leatherman uses 420 I think which works well for what it is. The one hand trekker is a whole lot lighter and I've enjoyed it. It won't replace a leatherman but its a good option when you don't need pliers.

No need to saw up and down! Trust me you'll love it and probably forget the p38 once you get the technique down

I want one hand opening not serrated ( pain to sharpen in the field ) a saw .don't want a corkscrew, Also want scales in a colour that is easily visible if I drop out on my land . Although victorinox knives have these features there does not seem to be one that combines these in one knife . The new Autumn 55 is a good colour bit does not have a one hand blade . Also can any one explain the logic of some models not having g a sewing hole in their awl.?

    • @JunkyardFox
      @JunkyardFox  7 років тому +3

      it is a softer steel so if you use the knife hard or very often it will lose its edge rather quickly but it also gains its razor sharp edge very quickly as well. when i tighten the edge back up, it tkaes me about two minutes and its back to shaving hair sharp.

    Say Heah, I went with the slightly larger Delemont Collection Rangergrip. What's neat is the logo is a push botton to close the knife. It's a liner lock so the ogo botton pushrs the limer lock. Actually the blade is around 4" plus the same with the saw. Thanks for the video, Its nice to see someone actually putting the Victorinox through its paces, good job. I think I prefer the Trekker you featured over the OHO version. I like the blade and profile more and I hate serrations. I usually carry the 91mm Ranger It has all the tools of the trekker plus a couple more and pocket friendly, although the blade is a little smaller than on the Trekker but hey theres always a tradeoff. Victorinox steel may be soft but its tough and folds rather than breaks and is very corrosion resisitant. Especially around salt water, dont take a leatherman down to the beach my Rebar rusted like crazy. Anyway thanks I subbed from Australia.

    Say Heah, Job well done. I have a very similar Victorinox, Mine is the Delemont Collection Ranger 58, the 59 is the same except instead of the Philips, it has a Corkscrew which you can use to untangle paranoid. I got the Phillips. But the lock is a push button on the handle, the Cross Logo is the pushbutton and the screwdriver locks when you depress it when you screwdrive a screw. Very similar though, I have it in a pouch and I always use it as a back-up when I use my Lite Trio for my Afternoon Delight a hot cup of coffee on the open fire and a baked potato or other eats, My Trio consists of my Mora 2000, my Mora Hatchet and a Baccho Laplander all match in color even the pouch which I carry all, and plus the other C's in a makeshift haversak I made from a flap over Five North camo purse which looks masculine and heah, it works, The knife I carry on person, and besides it's better than going to Micky Dee's for coffee and fries.

    Great job on the video James. Very well done and informative. I carry the Outrider, which is very similar to the Trekker, but has been retired. I also carry the Huntsman and the Climber. Vic SAK's are my EDC. When in the woods I add my LM Wave. That's all I need. That trout made me hungry. Nothing better than fresh trout over a fire. Next time, try a can of whole potatoes. That's what my grampa have with his trout, GOOD EATS!

    I am interested in the non serrated version of the one haqnd trekker but the tip looks more blunt than the classic. is it pointed enough to pierce for gutting and skinning ? cant think of anyone better to get an opinion from. got the rangergrip 78 its not bad a little big for edc this knife seems perfect the point just has me a little concerned

    • @JunkyardFox
      @JunkyardFox  5 років тому

      I’ve never used the non serrated one handed trekke to process game but this classic version works great. Not my go to skinner, since I hate cleaning up blood from the gears but it works great. Though the one handed non serrated is a bit round, it really just needs to be sharp enough and I’m sure it can handle skinning tasks.

    There is a specific way, involving the main blade and the wire stripper being used together to use the wire stripper. Can you or someone on your group research that and show people how to use that thing properly?

    Great review, one of the best I've seen! So much better than a table top review where someone just imagines everything works well. I have the Soldier but am considering the "two hand" Trekker because I think it will be more comfortable in the hand when using the other tools. Also you seem skilled and comfortable in the outdoors for someone who lives in the city! Tip: next time you find yourself with out a spoon or fork, cut some chopsticks with that awesome knife! Thanks for sharing.

    • @JunkyardFox

      Hey, while you're there-with your experience with the Trekker, which do you like better the one hand or regular blade? Thanks!

    • @JunkyardFox
      @JunkyardFox  8 років тому

      im gonna have to go with the one handed version for carrying everyday, from opening mail and packages, to using at work, the one handed mechanism is faster, more convenient. however, if youre gonna spend a lot of time outdoors, the classic trekker is better designed for carving and game processing. all the other tools are the same so that makes no difference.

    Great review! I guess I am one of those old timers, because my SAK Tinker has done a bit of everything and done it well. I am in the market for a slightly larger SAK and I think the Trekker, with the classic spear point will fit that bill. Thanks again for sharing!

    • @JunkyardFox

    I would hate to use any multitool to do something as nasty as gut a fish. All manner of goo can get up into the works and its hard to clean. I'd do it if I had to of course, but as an every day thing, I'd try to take a fixed blade or a folder with a flow-through design.

    • @JunkyardFox
      @JunkyardFox  7 років тому +8

      i agree, my belt knife is what handles the game processing, but since this is a review, i wanna see how it can handle such a task, and it did great. plus i know plenty of old timers who only carry a pocketknife or swiss army knife and they use it for everything, including game processing.

    • @Mandalore06
      @Mandalore06 7 років тому +6

      LOL! It's funny you mention that. My dad has carried a Victorinox Tinker as long as I can remember, and he does everything with it. From food prep to minor surgery (No kidding) that blade has done it all. I guess I'm just fussy.

    • @What_If_We_Tried
      @What_If_We_Tried 7 років тому

      My first hunting knife was an inexpensive ($10) carbon steel Friedr. Herder folder, with rounded wooden scales, and a 3.5 inch blade. It took an excellent edge, and was very easy to keep sharp with a steel while field dressing game, e.g., deer, and feral sheep.
      Later on, I bought more expensive knives, fixed and folding, that were beautiful to look at, but I kept coming back to that old German folder, and quit using the expensive stuff.

      it really depends o what you plan to use it for. i have the serrated one for everyday carry, works great for cutting boxes and plastic, everyday stuff. but if i lived in the boonies and i only really used it for filleting fish or skinning, then the nonserrated would be better.
