I love that you two showed such sympathy for Lambert. Lots of viewers bag on her for panicking and freezing up, but her response is entirely believable (and probably what many humans would do in that situation). It's refreshing to see reviewers who identify with her and are willing to say so.

What a terrific reaction to this absolutely iconic landmark film. Having just finished my degree and started my first job, I saw it on first release when I was 21, and it terrified the entire movie theatre. The special effects, audio, scale, tension and realism took everybody by surprise; nothing as in NOTHING had ever been done like this before. Like everyone else stated, Cameron's Aliens is a next must watch for you.

One brilliant thing about this movie, is just how often the Alien is fully on screen and the viewer doesn't even see it until it moves. remember when Brett is searching for Jonesy and we suddenly cut toa top view with a bunch of dangling chains? The Alien is right in full view, hanging onto one of the chains but it's easy to miss even if you know it's there.

I eventually saw it in my teens when it was shown on tele. I couldn't believe how amazing the sets and the photography of it was... is. Also, Jerry Goldsmith's brilliant score adds to the tension and palpable claustrophobia. And the shock reveal of Ash being an Android, I was like, WTAF?!! 😨

In 1979 there were twelve of us, all “tough” guys, all around 17 years old. During the scene in the dining room when the future alien is "born", we "tough" guys stood vertically in the air.
And the rest of the audience was on or under the seats. According to my information, only John Hurt knew what was going to happen. The others' horror was absolutely real.
The film plays in the old, brilliant Hitchcock style, with subtle horror until the last second. The film is still a milestone today and will certainly remain so for a long time.

The Facehugger in the egg was done with Ridley Scott lying on the floor with a pair of marigolds on inside the egg twitching his hands .👍👍👍 also they used I belive Ridleys kids in tiny spacesuits to shoot the scene where they find the Space jockey ( creature in the chair ) to make it seem bigger than it was and I saw a brilliant behind the scenes photo of Sigourney Weaver and Ian Holm both cracking up before they shot the scene where Ash is revealed , also the actor who played the Alien was a man called Balaji Badejo who was an African student who was drinking in a pub thd crew were in , Balaji was very tall and slim and perfect to play the Xenomorph.

Young folks can’t quite understand what it was like in 1979. Access to media was quite limited. No streaming. VCRs weren’t common. Even cable TV had limited reach. Few production studios. But, HBO was a thing. As a 9 year old, this movie was off limits. Until it came on HBO at a friends house one night. Let me tell you - the sounds of the sirens on the ship burned their way into my soul. Absolutely terrifying. Love that it’s still holding up for the current generation.

I first saw this movie in the theater when it was released, and I saw it on the Big Screen. We had not seen anything like it before, and it had us on the edge of our seats for the whole movie. Plus, there was NO CGI. Ridley Scott did it all in camera. Now, in the modern movies, aliens are all CGI, not scary, and there are no new scary aliens. This movie, ALIEN, set the bar for all space alien movie. Stars Wars had already been released, and that was a space action movie. ALIEN was the TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACER IN SPACE Horror Movie, with the crew being taken out one by one, and no place to hide. Even today, it's a thriller to watch.
Not bad, for a movie that had only an $8 Million dollar budget movie.

The reason the crew didn't try to kill the Xenomorph (Alien) by, for eaxmple shooting it, is because the Facehugger bled acid, which the full grown version definitivley have. If they shot the Alien, the blood would have eaten through the hull and the hole would have sucked the air out into space and they die from suffocation.

The chest burster scene was done with John Hurts head and arms poking through a hole in the table ( John Hurt was a very good contortionist and able to bend his body about ) he had a fake torso attached to him which the chest burster would come out from they used a scalpel to cut the torsos t shirt but they did not cut deep enough which is why the chest burster prop take 2 goes to emerge , the cast where given very scant information about how to Alien emerges and were totally shocked to give them really shocked reaction so their looks of horror are really genuine , apparently they arrived on set for that scene all the crew had raincoats on and the cameras had plastic sheeting over them the 2 producers and writers were giggling like schoolboys , the shot of blood squirting over Lambert was not meant to happen but they left it in as it looked really realistic , I love the close up shot of the chest burster with Kanes hands twitching behind the Alien such an iconic scene in an iconic movie .

What a wonderful reaction! Your reactions were very genuine and reminiscent of my own as a 15 year old who saw this opening weekend at the theater in 1979. It was the most frightening and exhilarating cinematic experience of my life. H.R. Giger's biomechanics world was nothing the world had ever seen before up until this film. The twisted melding of humanity and its technology and the faceless, soulless power of the Corporation and its dehumanization of humanity is a powerful message that resonates with me then and now. His art is a warning. This film is a masterpiece.

There's a slew of movies in the series.. the chronological order is PROMETHEUS, ALIEN: COVENANT, ALIEN: ROMULUS (the new one), ALIEN, ALIENS, ALIEN 3 (Assembly Cut), ALIEN RESURRECTION.. The viewing order is probably best as release order.. ALIEN, ALIENS, ALIEN 3, ALIEN RESURRECTION, PROMETHEUS, COVENANT, ROMULUS.

In today's world, supersized oil seafaring tankers have a crew complement of about 20 people. No passengers to babysit.
The spacefaring ship in the movie is a cargo ship of sorts not requiring a large crew. I guess it's implied that ships of the future will be almost fully automated, run by AI.

A Science Fiction Masterpiece. Everything is so well realized, from the ship to the characters, and the Alien and even the Androids were incredibly unique at the time. There are some subtle hints toward Ash's true nature. For instance, right after they wake up and are eating, we see Ash reach for the pitcher of milk. Wonderfully subtle foreshadowing.
These films are timeless, but sadly those new to them can never experience them the way we did in the theater. The big screen and dark theater aside, we had never seen anything like these films before, so everything was new and unexpected. Now they are so ingrained in pop culture that it's impossible to have that same experience.

In the novelization of the film, the reason the alien did not see Jones as a threat or try to kill him is because it saw Jones as a worthy creature like him. A hunter as it were. That's the reason it didn't kill Jonesy. Besides, how could anyone do that to a sweet kitty?

The new movie, Alien: Romulus, happens in between Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986). Personally, I found it was a genuinely good movie despite a few things that were annoying like the heavy numbers of callbacks to other movies in the series, it's now my 3rd favorite after Alien and Aliens. It's not a masterpiece, but I love how they heavily used practical effects, kept the first Alien aesthetic and the movie mostly works. I would recommend it.

  • @kevincaulder96

    Ok, Liam and Steph.
First, great reaction. You were engaged the whole way through, which made your reaction genuine.
Next up is ALIENS. Make sure you watch the director's cut for the full experience and information left out of the theatrical release.
    ALIEN 3,
ALIEN RESURRECTION, all have Sigourney Weaver. The sequels after the second film are a little uneven, but you can judge for yourselves.
Then comes PROMETHEUS and ALIEN COVENANT. These are more modern takes on the ALIEN mythology, but the special effects are terrifying. Which leaves the newest film in the franchise ALIEN ROMULUS. It is designed to fit between the first ALIEN movie and ALIENS to take advantage of the time line in-betweenthe two movies.
James Cameron directed the sequel ALIENS to give you some warning.
Keep going and enjoy the movies.

Seeing this again, I have thought about it and have some questions. How did Weyland Yutani know about the Alien and what it could do and how hostile it was? Had they already experimented with people to see what would happen? As far as the movie suggests, Kane was the first to discover them in their first stage. How would Weylan Yutani know they were extremely dangerous and hostile and that they gestate in a living host? The second movie also suggests the company didn't know about the Aliens as they sent a colony of humans on LV 426 to set up a life there. Of course, it's quite possible the writers of the movie just didn't bother thinking of such questions and nobody is particularly bothered about it, but it does leave some interesting holes in the story.

I’m gonna write a couple of comments throughout the viewing, before I forget my train of thought.
The reveal of the dead alien in the massive chair made everyone say: what is that? (Oh, and when “the only sane one says: let’s get out of here…, we aaaaaall say: yup, fabulous idea 😂
Ridley fought for this as he needed the budget increased, so that he could build that set.
I seem to recall him saying something like: This is the moment when the audience realizes they’re not in a cheap, run of the mill monster movie, this was something else.
He was so right, this just made everything more tense as you now really didn’t know what was coming as everything felt so dang real.
PS: Three children were used for the scenes of them walking around the chair, it made the scene appear even larger because of that. Good old old school trickery Pokery 😊

You are just great. I quite liked it. This is the prefect "real" reaction to this Sci-Fi-/Horror-Classic. The 1st ALIEN is my favrite of the series, especially due to the famous Jerry Goldsmith score which combines a very lyrical/atmospheric approach ("space") with pure horror (Alien), even knowing Jerry had major arguments with R. Scott about replacing/removing some his music cues.

I saw this on the second day of its national opening at the giant-screen Uptown Theater in Washington, DC. Six or eight of us from the Disclave science-fiction convention down the street walked there to catch the day’s first showing. Perhaps because it was Sunday, there was no significant line. When my friends and I came out, the line of hundreds, waiting for the second showing, stretched down the block and around the corner.
People today have no idea of the impact this film had then. In its own way, it was as innovative as “Star Wars.” The gritty, detailed set design, the horrifically stormy planet, the Hitchcockian suspense, and the working-class characters just doing a job---these were things never seen in earlier space movies. Today, people are jaded. The revelation of Ash was, I think, one of the most shocking moments in film history, and yes, the 1979 audience cheered at the end. The practical effects are still great today---some of the best ever done.
To answer your question, the alien was resting or sleeping in the shuttle after having eaten a big meal, just like many animals do.
BTW, the main idea was very similar to “It, the Terror from Beyond Space” (1958). Also, author A.E. Van Vogt sued the producers of “Alien” because of its similarity to his famous 1939 story, “Black Destroyer.” Van Vogt got a settlement, rumored to be half a million dollars.

Very true. Ridley proved that hes a great visual storyteller in Alien.
But its sequel is a masterclass in quick storytelling and immersion. James Cameron does it again. Aliens has the greatest rewatch value of the whole franchise and for good reason.
