    Thanks for watching! This video just covers the basics of driving on the freeway with a stick shift. It is the first of a multi-video series I will be making about driving a manual. Future videos will cover more complicated concepts like driving in heavy traffic, rev matching, reversing, hill starts, and much more. Be sure to stay tuned for these videos coming soon. See you in the next one!

    Hey, word of encouragement, I just so happened to see your channel and I am impressed and proud that an Indian also shares my passion for cars ( I myself am Indian). Thanks for making these videos I hope your channel blows up and becomes successful like Vehicle Virgins, Donut media, CrisFix, and Doug DeMuro and everyone else in the car community.
    Keep up the videos, You will get there.

    I read somewhere that coasting in neutral puts extra strain on your brakes. Is that true?

    • @CarVisionLA
      @CarVisionLA  3 роки тому +3

      It does if you do it regularly. You should never coast in neutral for an extended period of time when driving manual.

    My question is what about entering the freeway when the on ramp is a sharp curve? Or bad weather?

      Yeh I can say my 1994 Honda Accord brake pedal went soft because I didn’t close my bleeder valve good thing I saw it or it would have been a bad day for me.

    Is it mandatory to downshift then upshift when you are passing someone in the Highway? I drove a stick in the highway about 3 or 4 times I don't remember ever doing that.

    Is rev matching bad on my clutch?

    • @CarVisionLA
      @CarVisionLA  Рік тому

      Not if you do it the right way. It should feel smooth. Takes a bit of practice to get it.

    The dad of a childhood friend bought a 2011 Mercedes 350E sedan tonight so I found your 2016 video. Then I wanted to see how you've progressed so I choose this one having once lived in Mission Viejo where I started learning to drive. You and your channel have matured nicely.)
    I really learned to drive in Petaluma and on the streets of San Francisco after we moved up north. I had lots of time on 101, neighborhood streets, and the hills in The City. My dad insisted that I know how to stop at the intersections on the uphill side and then start again without slipping the clutch or rolling backward or killing the engine before he would let me get my driver's license,
    When I moved to North Carolina in 1978 I was shocked at how badly they drove and remember the first time I tried to enter the highway when someone wouldn't make room so I could merge onto the road. I muttered under my breath, "They don't know where I'm from or where I learned to drive." And I've thought that frequently since then. People here, often men in pickups or muscle cars assume all women can be pushed around and run over. And they sure don't think we know how to drive a manual transmission.
    I only gave up my stick shift after being diagnosed with a bladder disease that makes me feel like I have a UTI all the time. It became too painful to drive it as this rural area became more urban. I do love my 2005 PT Cruiser though.

    I have no experience with manual and it is quite expensive to learn where I am living so I am confused about something from this video- that if you are in top gear on highway you can't just speed up to pass someone? If I understood you right, you have to go down and then up again to pass? I was thinking that top gear gives you the power and speed to pass.

    • @CarVisionLA
      @CarVisionLA  3 роки тому +2

      That is correct. You technically can pass someone in top gear but it puts excess strain on the engine and you won’t get much power. The recommended way is to downshift because lower gears are lighter which means the engine can turn them quicker. That translates to more effortless passing power. Once you’ve passed the car you want and would like to remain at a consistent speed, then you should upshift back to top gear to reduce fuel consumption and strain on the engine. Remember, top gear (either 5,6,or even 7 depending on how many gears your particular car has) is the heaviest gear to be used when you’re cruising at a consistent speed over 60. Automatic cars do this exact same thing except you don’t notice since the car does it by itself.

      @@CarVisionLA Thanks a lot. I had another question if you don't mind please- When you are having to make a left on the lights and need to move fast so as to not bother the traffic behind you and move safely then how do you move fast in manual? Here we have to wait in the middle of the intersection for the parallel traffic to clear, and then make the turn when it is safe, so we need to move at a fairly reasonable speed, so in manual how would you move fast in that situation, because the method of easing off the clutch and finding the biting point then moving slowly would not allow for that kind of speed and pace. Please let me know. Thanks again bro.

    • @CarVisionLA

      I had this same problem and this was one of my biggest fears when learning. As you keep practicing, this motion will become muscle memory and you’ll be able to get the car moving as quickly as an automatic car would in this situation. It seems intimidating at first but you’ll wonder why you were even concerned about this when you master driving stick shift.

      @@CarVisionLA Thank you, I see, I thought there may be a trick or some other method to get it moving faster from stand still when needed. Thanks you so much for the encouragement, it means a lot.

    I can rev match on my automatic if I go from neutral to drive 4 I hit the gas and it will not jerk. I shift my automatic with 1-4 shift Honda. It’s a lot of fun.
