HOW TO DRIVE A STICK SHIFT: Easy Step by Step Tutorial!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 2 лип 2016
- This video shows you how to drive a manual car or stick shift car using my 2010 Lotus Evora. This is a step by step tutorial in the 2010 Lotus Evora! Hope you all enjoy it and learn how to drive some fun cars! Driving a manual is a cool skill to have because if you haven't seen sales on manual cars, they are slowly dying off so they are becoming more rare to see and have produced by car manufactures. It's a great skill that allows you to be able to drive a wide variety of cars, without having to worry about being able to drive it or now. This takes some time to master since you are using both feet and your right hand to shift.

I recently learned how to drive manual and oh my GAWD this video would have been so helpful! thank you for explaining so much so easily! definitely one of the best how-to-drive-stick videos on here
Thanks! Glad it was helpful!
Best Tutorial on UA-cam! Thanks so much!
Thanks, your welcome!
+Bros FOURR Speed Bros big qeustion is changing gear all the time necessary, like for example is 5th gear and 6th gear necessary I'm still confused please help me out?
It depends on the circumstance. Highway speed, stick to your highest gear for best MPG. You can still accelerate in the high gears, so you dont always have to down shift. Just feel what gear has the best power for what ever speed you are going.
+Bros FOURR Speed Thank's for this tip I'm going to practice it on my toyota 86. ;)
+Bros FOURR Speed I will comment you if you like to tell you how much this step has worked for me, soo ya Hopefully I might make my video on myself driving and getting better at manual? soo ya I tell you how it goes bros.
This is a genuinely well-explained video. I've had to watch about four videos to understand what your video demonstrated in one. The foot camera was extremely useful as was your clear explanation of everything, so thanks!
Glad you like it! Here is a newer one I made with better cameras. ua-cam.com/video/yB0o4Cmf_u0/v-deo.html

You are welcome!
damn dude this was really helpfull
I agree I think it's the best
this is cool
definitely the best one I found so far. Wish you included the rev matching.
Thanks! This video is more for the beginner. If I do an Intermediate video, that would include rev matching.
Cool Thanks
the best tutorial
Thanks!
Wow this video should get wayyyyy more likes
Like that lotus man
Thanks!
This video has been very informative and simple to understand. I'm actually looking to buy my first used car very soon and it's a manual. I've never driven a manual before and it looks frightening at first, but your video builds up my confidence. My family is from Nicaragua and the majority of them drive with manuals, automatics are rare over there. The only people with automatics are people who have more money to spend.
Going off topic, as I was browsing for a used car, a lot of them I found as autos, while I don't mind driving them, although I'd like to be more skillful in the event I happen to be visiting another country and if manuals are the only ones available, then it'll be no problem, since I'll know how to use them.
Thanks! The Scion tC was my first car. It was a manual. Very inexpensive to buy right now, super reliable, and the manual is easy to learn on in that car.
Mine is a '95 Honda Accord. I took it for a spin and handles great. After watching your tutorial a few times, driving a manual isn't as bad as people say. At first, I had trouble driving it back home after buying from the owner, after my first practice run, it was a lot less difficult after knowing when to clutch and letting go slowly while the vehicle is moving.
thnx for sharing .....cuz I'm going to learn one now since my hasband brought me one .....thnx again
awesome!
Thank you so much now I can drive my 97 eclipse
really well put together video. thank you
Glad you like it!
cool vid..what car did u learn how to drive a manual on. my first one was a 2004 Pontiac GTO...and that 1-4 skip shift was fun
+Pj Washington Well, I've been racing motocross since second grade. So the clutch action was allready very easy for me. My first car, Scion tC, the day I bought it, I hopped in first time and drove pretty decent.
i wonder what the other car will be. Also u should do Lotus maintenance vids. I wonder if Lotus cars are $$$ like people say
Yup, we'll be doing all those kinds of videos with it. A lot of the reason behind buying the Lotus was to see what it would be like with an 'exotic'
Big up great
My first car is automatic. Now that I got the feel for driving I need a manual. The car I have now does paddle shifters so it helps with knowing what gears to use at what times. It's basically like a starter manual which is cool. I would still like a full manual. It just seems more exciting. I like being able to control the RPMs.
i learn fast thanks.
Your welcome.
👍 like it mate
Thanks!
You don't have to push E-brake release button when you activate E-brake.
That can't make your car stand still on higher hills.
But I give you a thumbs up!
You made a high quality pedal view!
I found this to be the best tutorial out of all them.
Sketchylemons Thanks, glad you liked it!
No, thank you! Can you maybe do a guide on downshifting?
Sketchylemons I was planning to do a more advanced video at some point.
Yes Pls do some downshifting guide thanks :)
Good man, surprisingly theirs a lot of people who need this info! What camera do you use for the dash mount clips? (By the a pillar)
Thanks! GoPro Hero 4 for all the interior clips. And Galaxy S5 for the outside of the car clip
What about using the blip while you downshift? How does the rev matching work when going down and skipping gears?
good video , it's missing just the rev-matching downshifting thing, and it would have been perfect !
Cool
Thank yoy
Is it correct if I release the clutch to the bite point and hold it there for about 0.5-1 sec until I feel the car won't stall then completely release the clutch? This is what I have been doing and I never stall anymore and rarely have a jerking motion when moving from a standstill.
Damn why does every tutorial make downshifting seem hard. You made it simple lol nice vid
when i brake i do like you :D off the clutch and just brake pedal my first car was an manual and in driving school they teach me to drive whit a car that was manual transmission BMW 116 d (d=diesel)
I thought when going from 2 to 3 to 4 to 5 to 6 you dont slowly let out the clutch you dump it?? Or is that only if youre going faster
good video
Thanks!
damn i thought that pick up was gonna hit you at 7:25
Good tutorial, what camera did you use for the dash video/audio?
All the audio was from the camera on the windshield.
How do you know when to change gears?
Man, great video. Taught me a lot, getting my licence very soon, so this'll help loads. How much was your Lotus and how'd you pay for it, if you don't mind me asking? An Evora is my dream car, and I was just curious what you paid for it. Thanks!
I actually made two videos for those questions! "What I really spent for my Lotus Evora" and "What I did to afford a dream car". Check them out on the channel!
Im relatively new to this channel. Would you say driving a manual is gaining popularity among the newer folks? I taught my 18 yr old nephew and he is thrilled.
Honestly I think it's loosing popularity. Just looking at video games, they rarely have it to where you can shift in the game. When I was a kid playing Need For Speed you always had to shift. I'm sure they will still keep making them for normal sportscast.
This is also if you have a brand new car with a good clutch. I drove a 2013 Golf GTI and it was completely different from the 2002 Ford Ranger that I drove
This was helpful, informative, and well done. Kudos! It'd be great if you do an "intermediate" version and even an expert version (heel & toe maybe?)... Anyways great job :)
Yeh I'm thinking of doing an Intermediate vid
can i also put the handbrake up and press the clutch in and out to feel out the bite point? will this also work with the car off?
Absolutely! thats a great way to start. Have the engine off and press the clutch a few times to feel it out
makes me way more confident in driving a m/t!
Awesome! Glad to help!
wah will happen if yu stay nd one gear
and what about blipping the throttle when you were downshifting
I have been following your videos lately. In a Z, I would give more gas first then ease out the clutch since it is kind of tricky to modulate. Your thoughts..?
definitely true. The Z is one of the most difficult manuals I've driven. Most cars are pretty easy tho.
is that Lake Norman NC ?
I took my 2nd lesson today and wtf I did worse. I stalled the car like 6 times today. I fuking hate first gear I know I'm doing the right movements but it stalls ugh.
the other gears are easy but first was just a pain for me today. my tutor said it's because it was my first time on the road and was worried about cars behind and in front of me. I feel more comfortable driving with no cars because I can focus on multitasking but I feel that I was doing the right movements even though I was nervous.
damn that first gear. is here an easier too to master it?
will u stall if you break while in gear? Do you have to be in neutral?
You won't stall until you get down to super slow speeds. You can leave it in whatever gear you are in, but I would say get to 3rd gear when you get under 20 mph. And then go to neutral
I thought you didn't have to let go the clutch slow... for example switching from 2nd to 3rd
btw everything thats outside look much closer in the car for example parking in a parking lot you gonna turn the car to the left in parking spot its allmost looks like your front of the car is gonna scratsh that car thats on the right or front when you turning to the spot to your left but its not but be careful when you park it can hit if you not know where you have your car :)
Damn this car looks nice
Thanks!
Pretty good summary of how to drive a manual - it's quite funny listening to it as a British person because you refer to an auto as a 'normal car', whilst in Britain the majority drive manuals. I've recently bought a semi-auto and have had to 'unlearn' a few things - a common problem of going from manual to auto is that you sometimes stamp on the brake when you try to put the (non-existent) clutch in.
A few points - at around 7 minutes and towards the end of the video, you recommend putting the car into neutral as you approach the turn. That's very bad advice; by 'coasting' into a turn you have no control over your engine. The correct procedure should be to leave it in gear, down shifting as you slow down, then put your clutch in once you come near to a halt. That way you can react to any situation, and additionally the engine provides some extra braking power.
Another thing that you touched on is pressing the clutch when starting the car - this is a really good habit to get into because it means even if the car is in gear it won't be 'engaged' so you can still start it. If you try to start a car with a gear engaged it jumps forwards and stalls. Unlike many autos, you don't need to have your foot on the brake to start the car, especially if the handbrake (e-brake) is on, but there's no problem with doing so.
Also, when finding the biting point, you mentioned each time that you watch the revs drop, it's worth noting that you can feel the car start to move - or if you have the handbrake on the back squats down (held by the brake). Once you're used to driving a manual you will rarely look at the tachometer, and once you know your car you'll know where the biting point for the clutch is by feel.
Finally, when changing gear while moving it's often a good idea to use the accelerator to 'rev match'. When you let off the accelerator and press the clutch in the revs will start to drop down to idle (usually just under 1k rpm). As you lift the clutch back up and engage the new gear the revs will pick up again to match the engine speed. If you change gear slowly there can be a big difference in these speeds which results in a jerky change. By using the accelerator you can hold the revs at the correct level for the next gear, resulting in a much smoother change. Obviously this is a 'beginners' video so you might cover this in your next video.
On the whole though, a decent introduction.
Thanks for the comment. This video is designed for the absolute beginner. While up shifting you don't really need to rev match because the quicker you are able to shift, the revs will fall to the correct spot as you go up in gears. I did say to push the clutch in when you start the car. Also, as I approached the stop, I was at the 10mph spot when I said to put it into neutral. But I hear you in what you are saying. This is just the basics to get someone up a driving successfully, and the more they drive, the smoother everything will get.
Yeh for Americans, a manual is a foreign transmission lol My friend from Germany was shocked that everyone here had an automatic.
Yup, I got that it was a for beginners, was just adding my 2 cents :)
As for rev matching, of course if you shift fairly quickly it's not necessary, however because you were doing slow, obvious movements (to help the viewer) the revs were dropping, in which case it's fairly important. You won't always be driving quickly so sometimes a slow, gentle change is required (e.g. if you're taking your grandmother to the shops).
As for clutch when starting, I was reiterating your point and saying it was a good thing to do :)
Your speed wasn't clear from the video when you were going into neutral, so many beginners may not realise that's the case. I'd still argue that you should only go into neutral once you've actually come to a halt though.
I wasn't meaning to be critical, I think it was a good guide and covered pretty much all of the basics to get people started with a manual.
Are you required to take a separate test in the US to drive a manual? In the UK you can take an 'automatic' driving test, however if you do so you aren't legally allowed to drive manuals. If you take the 'normal' test, ie with a manual car then you can drive both.
I hear what you are saying on everything. I might make an 'intermediate' video that will go more into that depth.
As far as tests go... we only have one and it really only overs the different signs and traffic laws. You bring your own car for the driving test. I did mine in my dads 4Runner. The standard license lets us drive basically any non commercial vehicle. I think the license test should include race track driving so people can actually learn how to really drive! Lot of bad drivers over here lol
Wow, so there's no 'practical' test at all?! In the UK you have to take a theory test first, where you answer 40 questions about laws and signs etc, and then you have to do a 40 minute exam where you drive around town with an examiner next to you. You are graded very harshly on the drive - if you forget to check a mirror before turning etc you get a 'minor fault', if you get more than 15 minors you fail. If you do something more dangerous, like pull in quite close to someone or pull out in front etc, then you get a 'major fault'. If you get one major, you fail, but continue the test (you only find out the results at the end). Lastly, if you do something very dangerous, e.g. not stopping at a pedestrian crossing when you should, you get an immediate fail and the test ends. I've just had a quick Google and apparently only 21% of people pass first time, so you can see how strict it is. Of course you still get some pretty awful drivers but in general people tend to be better than most countries.
As for track driving, there are lots of different racing licences you can take and they definitely help your control of the car - I've not taken a test yet but I did a day's tuition with a racing driver and it was great fun and very informative. I think for most people it's a bit overkill though!
I started watching your channel because of the Lotus Evora - it's potentially my next car so love seeing videos on it. I currently have an Audi TTS which is awesome for day to day driving but lacks a bit of excitement when you start to push it. Congratulations on getting such a nice car.
WOW! That test sounds crazy! We take a written 20 question test for our learners permit and 15 years old. Then at 16 we can take a quick sign test with a 10 minute drive with an examiner. If we pass that, we get our license. I passed everything first try because it is super easy.
Glad you like the Evora! It's tons of fun and we have some cool plans with it. I've always liked the TTs, especially the newer ones.
i learned how to drive stick in 2 days and each day i drove it like 3 blocks and by my selfs thats how easy it is i learn in a 99 dodge stratus the only thing im still learning is when im on a hill i still kinda go back a littke
Just saying could be better if he mentioned using the clutch when stopping p, but still good
Can you do one on heal/toe? Also, does yo bruvaa know yo ass is drivin his car? LOL I like the picture in picture framing.
Thanks, it was a pain getting the two videos to line up for every clip! LOL I'm thinking of making a video for 'intermediate' manual skills. I'll have to brush up on Heal/toe. I can do other rev matching techniques. Shhhh, don't tell him...
You keep your foot on the clutch while shifting?
yup. keep the clutch pressed down until the new gear has been selected
Bros FOURR Speed I watched a Japanese car show in which there was a comparison of two models: New specs and Old specs [Subaru Wrx Sti]. The footage shows them stomping on the clutch while shifting, so I thought this was ACTUALLY how you changed gears. I need a brief explanation on why that happened, oh and does this apply to ALL manual transmission vehicles?
Don't put in neutral while slowing down.
You are coasting which implies you have less control over your car and can't react as well to spontaneous hasard that may happen.
It's to the point where many countries see it as an illegal manoeuvre.
Instead, go as such:
slow down until you are almost stopped (rpm/mph needed to downshift in first),
Clutch in,
Downshift in first,
If you see that you won't be moving in the next few seconds, then put your car in neutral and let off the clutch.
to the uk people yeah sadly us US people need to watch things like this since in driving school we aren't taught anything about manual/stickshifts and allot of the vehicles in the US are automatic.
how do people afford these cars. great video man! nice car!
Thanks!... I made a video on how I afforded this car and pricing, it's in the Evora playlist if you want to check them out.
