Saving My Jade Plant 2020 Update With Time Lapse

  • It's been six months since my last update on my Jade plant where I planted up the two largest surviving branches as cuttings. The Cuttings have now rooted well and the original stump of the Jade plant has lots of healthy new shoots. The timelapse took over five months to film and is probably the longest continuous time lapse I've ever filmed. Also there appears to be no signs of rot as both the cuttings and the stump are healthy and putting on growth.

    Hi, thank you so much for this "Saving my jades" series. I am experiencing the same thing with my late mother's jade.. This plant means a lot to us and even more so now that my mum's gone. Somewhere between hospital visits and messed up daily schedules, I had failed to realise that the trunk of her jade had rot.. Today I finally decided to uproot it and have a look and to my horror, practically the whole trunk had rot (squishy white stuff inside). So I cut back to healthy stems and was about to cut it into even smaller cuttings as I read online that larger stems are harder to root.. And then I found this video series. Thanks to you I didn't cut them up really small.. And now I have 3 semi-tree like sections which I can try to root. Once again thank you!! I have some hope for my tree(s) now!

      Sorry to hear about your loss, I hope your able to save your mums Jade plant. They root very easily, so your three branches should become three new plants, just make sure to keep the soil fairly dry until the roots have started to form. Even if the branches shrivel up a lot they can still come back to life. I will have another update on my Jade plants in a few months time.

      I know your comment is years old but it's never easy to lose a parent. I hope you and your family (and the jade lol) are doing well! I recently purchased my first jade, a tricolor, which is what has brought me to these videos. My middle daughter who is 12 listens to me talk plants and when I showed her different jades she laughed that her and her two sisters would be inheriting the tree one day. Lol. Hopefully I can get it growing beautifully!

In 2014, he gave me a cutting of it, and since he's no longer here, Ive been looking after mine royally. Gave it a buzzcut and hoping to start thicken mine out a little bit, as its all just really long and tall

    I've had the same problem with mine. I picked up a plant second hand from a couple who said it was too big and branches started falling off a couple of months ago. I'm a novice and ignored it but it's kept happening so decided to investigate. I've had to butcher it right back, although some branches seem ok, although I'm worried they might also have rot. I've not had a chance to look at the roots yet as waiting on some compost and perlite to arrive so I can repot straight after but I had a quick look and seems similar, dry, not rotten, although can't investigate properly.
    I'm going to stop watering it and let it dry out, your video has shown me how well these plants can handle no water. Also going to apply iso alchohol on the exposed bits. Hopefully that well sort out any little bits of rot still in it and kill the infection. And investigate the roots soon. I really hope I can save it it's an amazing plant and the big trunks are perhaps even bigger than yours. I also have 2 chunky branches that I saved for cuttings.

    That time lapse is amazing! Thank you for this series. Just had our 10 year Jade have the same bacterial rot. Embarking on the new cutting method as you did. Did you water those cuttings after putting into the soil?

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks, Yes, I watered the soil just a tiny bit so that it was slightly damp. But before I planted the cuttings I left them out for a few weeks to make sure the cuts were completely healed before transferring them to soil. After the first watering I only watered a very small amount and only once the soil had become very dry, without roots to absorb the water the soil stays damp for a long time and so you have to be really careful not to over water. Hope your able to save most of your Jade and stop the rot from spreading.

Now I just cut it up into two "trees", into the healthy part, and re-potted them the exact same way as you did. Now I am just wondering, how often do you water them? And how long does it take for it to make roots? Thank you so much, I really hope this works out! :)

    • @KernowGarage
      @KernowGarage 4 роки тому +2

      with jades the best thing to do is make sure they are planted in well draining succulent and cactus soil and then water them really well and soak the soil and then allow the soil to dry out completely before you next water again, this is the best way to water jades because if the soil stays too wet they will rot, that's why you need a well draining soil that wont hold on to water :) i hope this reply isn't too late

    I have watched all 3 of your videos to learn about overwatering and root rot. I think my largest (at least 15 year old) jade may have this going on. Long story short, a friend took care for 6 months, watered several times and then told me that it was dropping shriveled dried leaves constantly. Made mention of when and how to water. Since I have had it, a couple of limbs and lots of leaves have just dropped. Sprayed with Neem due to seeing some signs of webs, but could have been from being on a porch. Plant actually perked up tho when I moved it to the screened in porch to spray but still lost leaves. The largest truck is not as smooth as the other 2, it almost looks like alligator skin. Is this a sign of root rot? Thanks for any input.

      Whenever the soil dried out I watered them, I can't say how many days was in between waterings as it varied depending on the temperature and light levels which varied a lot. But before they rooted I was very careful with watering because without roots the compost took a long time to dry out in between waterings.

I have pruned branches off in the past but have never gotten new growth, just dried nubs. So, I am afraid to cut off this bigger branch in case I get no new growth! Any suggestions would be appreciated! I have it in a West window and I water about once a month. It is a healthy plant from what I can tell just no new growth on pruned areas. Thank You!!

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  3 роки тому +2

      Lack of regrowth is usually due to the branch being low down on the plant, incorrect pruning, the wrong time of year or weak plant health. Make sure you prune the plant in late spring or summer, if pruned in winter or autumn it is less likely to sprout. When you cut the branch leave two to three nodes on the branch (ring on bark where leaves used to be) if you cut too close to the trunk and remove the whole branch there will be nowhere to regrow from. If you cut a low down stem it is less likely to sprout because the growing stem tips produce a hormone that travels down the stem and stops lower buds from growing. To overcome this remove all growing tips on the plant, by cutting off the top two pairs of leaves, this will stop the hormone production and allow the lower stems to regrow, however it can also cause new stems to grow from many other places and make the plant busier so you may need to prune a few weeks afterwards if some of the new stems are not growing from areas that you want branches to form. If the plant is not getting enough light or is weak it often won't resprout, feeding with a high nitrogen feed or moving to a sunnier position/grow light, will help resprouting.

    Hi there, thank you for sharing this has helped me as I have been struggling with my Jade plant. How often would you water your jade once you replanted it and had it sitting over the time lapse period? Was watering done very sparsely?

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  3 роки тому +1

      I made sure the soil was slightly damp when I planted them and then watering was extremely minimal until I knew the roots had established. I only watered when the compost became bone dry. They are at high risk of overwatering and rotting until they establish their roots. You will know they have grown roots when the leaves start to swell up and new leaves and stems start to grow. Checking the compost for roots is dangerous as the roots are so small and delicate when young they are easily broken.

    • @Gardeningat58N

      Jade plants grow roots from the stem when their roots are damaged incase their original roots rot and the plant falls over the new roots can take over. When taking cuttings the best stems are the ones with roots as these will establish much quicker.

    Hi, i wanted to ask how to grow a LOT of Mint, i have some mint but its pitiful small and it grows extremely slow... takes about 1 month for it to be able to get just a few leafs for a tea... no idea what im doing wrong. What type of light are you using to grow the plant? does it works if i use my desk light?

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  4 роки тому +2

      Usually if Mint is grown outside it will grow huge and is often a problem because it grows too much. However if your growing mint indoors then things are different. Mint is usually dormant over winter and won't want to grow, its usually best in winter to keep it somewhere cold like, outside and let it die back to its roots. Mint won't grow well unless it has its rest period over winter. Come spring grow it on a cool sunny windowsill, Mint doesn't like hot temperatures so avoid midday sun. Also mint likes a lot of water so never allow the compost to dry out. Also feed the plant with a feed high in nitrogen as this will encourage lots of large leaves. The best lights are special grow lights, but any bright led or cfl light will also work.
