Saving My Jade Plant (Cuttings Update)

- Its been over two months since I discovered my Jade plant had started to rot. In this video I make cuttings from the two largest surviving branches which should root in the next few weeks to produce two new plants. The original stump rotted away in the middle, but has now started to recover and is growing new stems. In this video I pot up the Jade plants original stump which will hopefully grow into a new Jade tree.

If I was you, I would have put those two uneven cuttings and planted them back to back, that way they will give the impression of a clump of trees that create a better shape, and hopefully in time, they will knit together when matured. Good to see the stump kept growing, jades are amazing at regenerating. That stump will make a great looking mature tree in x amount of years.
That's a good idea, I still have the two cuttings so that's always an option in the future, although they have grown since this video and so don't look as uneven anymore.
How are the Jades doing? I’m interested in seeing another update.

Thanks, I'll try to keep making regular videos, it's a little difficult in summer when I'm busy with work, but I'll upload more frequently come winter.
In regards to the middle rotten piece. You said that you have to be carful when watering so that you don’t rot it. Maybe you can cap that middle piece with wax or something (like what they do the ends of the lucky bamboo) that way you don’t have to worry about getting water in the middle piece for years to come! I’m so happy that it’s regrowing from the truck! Good luck with it! Love the videos and your channel by the way!

Thanks, yes succulents are amazing for being able to re-root, these are the largest cuttings I've ever tried.
Wow, those jade plants are huge! I can't wait for mine to get that big. They are starting to get really thick stems and grow quite a bit. It's probably time to transplant them into a bigger and sturdier pot. Thank you for sharing such great information!
When Jades are happy and in a good sized pot they can grow surprisingly quickly, Jade plants are probably the fastest growing succulents I have.
Very good news!! Hopefully everything keeps recovering. That base may actually turn out even better than it was before.
I hope so, I'm excited to see how it looks when it recovers, it's going to look really unusual with such a thick trunk with several new stems growing out of it.

Yeah I really liked this Jade, it was my first houseplant after I moved to a new city. I think I may make a video about its life so far as I have lots of photos and its been in 5 different houses.

I'll hopefully have an update in Autumn, I do like portulacaria afra, they make good bonsai because they have such small leaves.

@@Gardeningat58N you can actually root jade plant cuttings in water. we have one thats over 20 years old and I root fallen branches in water all the time. it transfers to soil quite well!

Must be a worry trying to keep the center of you original jade plant trunk dry. Just wondered if you sprinkled in some silica gel (like from a product that was packaged with one to keep it dry) would dry out the rot permanently. I save those little packets of silica for various uses and they come in handy. Just a thought. I'm just starting to learn about succulents and your videos are helpful. Thanks!

Thanks for posting so many videos of Jade care! I think they are one of my favorite house plants that I have. My jade is approximately 40 years old, I've had it for 12 years now. It is a triple stem and each are leaning out. I'm not sure if they come from one base like your favorite jade did. This plant has spent the last year in darker conditions and is now looking scraggly. I'll follow your directions and wait until it has been in its new location for another two weeks. Should I try to straighten it? The stalks look good as is, kinda like an upside down tripod. What fertilizer would you recommend? I have miracle gro plant food spikes. I'm also curious about your watering routine, especially over winter. Thanks very much!! Cory
I would cut off the scraggly branches, as you've moved it to a brighter location the new growth should come through with stronger compact branches. Have you watched my video about pruning and straightening a Jade plant? that video should be helpful for your situation. I would carefully straighten the branches like I do in that video using bamboo canes, just be careful to do it slowly over several months as the branches will snap easily if you use too much pressure. I usually used a balanced fertiliser or one high in nitrogen over spring and summer as I like large glossy leaves. But if your plant remains leggy use a feed a bit lower in nitrogen. Then in autumn I switch to a tomato feed, I don't feed at all over winter. In winter I water very little, only when the leaves start to become a little thin and slightly flexible.
Do you know why the plant rotted. I had a jade plant 20 years old , 5 foot tall and died ,rotting on the trunk. Unfortunately I did not know how to save it and it just died a natural death.
Maybe you could try putting some Titebond wood glue in that hole.
In the hole could you put wax in it to seal it?
I did that with a Yubba plant years ago. did not have any official gardeners wax, so I put a bit of tissue paper in the hole and them dripped candle wax over it, worked well.

How often and how much watering did you gove your jade plant that was pruned to its trunk? I did the same to mine a week ago and the soil still seems moist at the top so I've held back watering...
I waited until the soil was fully dry before watering, when the plant has been pruned hard and has no, or very few leaves it takes a long time for the soil to dry out, potentially over a month.
Do you think propagating cuttings and leaves will work through autumn and winter?
Yes, however it will take longer and the success rate will be slightly less.
I do not see you water the plants after you put them in the pot?
I gave them an initial watering and then didn't water again for a few weeks until the soil had dried out as they don't absorb much water from the soil until the roots have filled the pot.
Where did you keep your cuttings while waiting for them to dry out? I have a 4ft 20 year old jade that started to rot in the trunk. I’ve cut out the rot, put rooting hormone with a fungicide on the cut end, and have it hanging in a dark closet, but it keeps rotting in the trunk and I keep having to cut it more. Maybe I’m not storing it properly. Hopefully you can give some advice. Thanks!
I just leave mine out on the counter. Not in the sun but also not in a dark enclosed space. Air circulation is important to keep cuttings from rotting before they can scab up. I also only leave mine for four or five days before planting, though they are usually smaller than those shown here and haven't needed root hormone at all.

Yes, any new growth after cutting will grow upwards, but if it doesn't get enough light it will start to lean over and hang again after a few months.

You can use wax to cover the hole in the main trunk
Possibly, but wax creates such a good seal that it can cause issues with moisture, the stems of plants breath and so very slowly release water into the air, if its sealed with wax water could start to build up inside which could then allow rot to return. A semipermeable material would be better, or over time as the Jade grows it may seal up by itself.
@@Gardeningat58N well it has plenty of space to transpire all over the stem, which won't be covered in wax if you do fill it. So the benefit far outweighs the risk, because that pesky hole would dissapear. Fun fact, just a few days after watching your video I found out the trunk of my echeveria also had rotted lol. But it's a far smaller and younger plant so I wouldn't compare it to your case. Good luck anyways!
I had a jade plant about 3 in tall didn't grow an inch for 8 years until I absentmindedly put a piece of amethyst in the pot, it is 5 times the size it was a year ago... I'm starting to get concerned.
The minerals on the amethyst could have easily provided extra neutrients for the plant.
