  • Thanks for watching.
CSX GP30 4224 leading Chessie 6012 & 6105, with train R396, is clawing its way up the steepest part of Sand Patch grades western slope in number 8 notch. We are at Keystone, Pa. On the rear is Chessie 8623 pushing hard to keep things rolling. We also see R138 east duck under the Western Maryland at Keystone. The last clip, we again catch up with CSX 4224 as it drops down the eastern side of Sand Patch, at Fairhope, PA.
Video was taken January 28, 1990 with a Panasonic VHS camera.

I'm too young to remember trains like this but I'm glad people like you are out there preserving history. Greetings from Pittsburgh!

You know, I understand times change but man do I miss this time and this section of the line just like I miss Saluda grade and other places. Thank you so much for bringing back this time for a little bit.

As always Jack , thanks for posting. It still blows my mind at how much video you shot over the years, as I and countless others are so glad you did! You are the unofficial historian for railroading in America, and Canada. Hope all is well , happy New Year, and have a GOOD day driver!

Good ol’ 396 , loved running the chicagoan , west coaster , or detroiter in the afternoon then lining up for the 396 back the next morning… Amazing what the new gevo’s can do today, thanks Jack…👍

Those were the good old days. Most trains were 4 axle units. Doesn't compare to todays high tech power. Thanks for watching.

That was nice back in the day, before they put all the wind turbines all over the mountain. B&O/Chessie got their money's worth out of the GP30's and 40's.
