Chicken lady here - free range is awesome, but yes they still need pellets and in particular a good calcium source or you will end up with egg issues. One of your hens is not laying because she is broody…meaning her hormones are telling her to sit on her eggs to hatch, regardless of whether there is a rooster around. They go into a trance like state and your friendly hen will become extremely aggressive and peck you, especially if you try and move her. You must either let her hatch a clutch or break the broody cycle because not only will she not lay, but she will eat less, lose weight and not dust bathe as often, resulting in parasites attacking her and any other hen in the hutch. A broody hen can sit for weeks to months so you must break the broodiness for her own health. Some hens will break the cycle easier than others, some will continue to go broody often, depends on the individual and the breed. A broody hen is a hen that refuses to leave the nest and every time you go to the hutch, she is always in there and you rarely see her out and about. Google how to break the broody hen, it’s too much for me to write in a comment, there are a few methods that work. Certain breeds become more broody than others, so if you ever get more hens, research what breeds you have access to that are less broody. The other reason hens don’t lay are because of seasonal changes (cold weather), poor health, old age or moulting. Most don’t lay when they are moulting as they are using all their energy to grow new feathers. You know when they are moulting because they lose feathers, some get bald patches and you see feathers around where they hang out. Its usual for them to have a non laying period, unless they are ones that have been bred for egg production, like the ones used in awful caged egg factories. Isa browns pretty much lay all year round and rarely go broody, however they typically don’t have as long a lifespan as other breeds, 2-5 years compared to 5-10 years. I always rescue Isa browns from the egg factories and get at least a good year of daily egg production from them, and let them retire on my free range farm. I also have a few other breeds too though, just because I love them and want hens that live longer because I get attached to them. Also check they haven’t decided to lay elsewhere, some will find a cosy spot out of the nest. I once found a mountain of at least 60 eggs under a pile of wood, had no clue one had chosen a different place to lay! Research your breeds and research breaking broody hens. Good luck! Oh and check your broody hen for parasites regularly and kick her out of that nest, so she eats, until you get time to research how to break her broody brain.
I hope you put up a clothesline for a back up for your clothes to get dried. You need a big pot over a fire pit to heat up water for laundry, or to cook on too. There is always a way to cook or do dishes, laundry or take a bath, other than turning on the knob.

You are so lucky to have Enrique and Iberto. You would not have completed half of what you have done without them. It is wonderful that you can provide them with a paid job. They have been there every step of the way doing the tedious, hard labor right beside you. Digging multiple holes with a post digger, lumbering wood from trees with a chainsaw, welding at all heights, changing your shed roof multiple times, mixing and hauling thousands of pounds of concrete, building a deck, patio, and walkway steps, building the animal enclosures...welding, welding, welding, and hand hauling multiple thousands of pounds of materials up and down hills with the simplest of tools, and assisting with all the animal husbandry. I hope they received a big end-of-the-year bonus. It is wonderful that they could introduce you to the indigenous tribal coffee growers for your coffee business. Kudos to those two guys.
We free-ranged our chickens and also kept their feeder filled. They chose what they needed. We brought them apple snacks from time to time, maybe a couple times per week, but mostly, they found grubs and ate grass and weeds. We had two acres and 8 chickens. Plenty for everyone. Including 5 llamas and 3 ducks. Happy hillside.

Jordan, you are a tenacious beast in getting it done the right way. I am quite certain I would have turned that room into a closet rather than rip all those boards down and basically start over. That was a lot of hard work, and I am really impressed that you (and everyone who helped) pushed through it.
Love to see Sadie being so involved in making meals. This quality time with Mum will surely imprint in her memory for the rest of her life and set her up for success with good health.
Last, but not least, in case you were wondering what was in the toilet, that was a female dobsonfly. They are an indicator of good water quality (well-oxygenated) in nearby rivers and streams. The female only lives in the flying form for about 10 days, with the male living only about three days. In this state, they don't feed; their only goal is to mate. The female deposits large white blobs of egg masses (looks like bird turds) on the underside of leaves near the rivers/streams. They are attracted to light, which might be why you found one in your bathroom at night.
I used to work on a dairy farm. They also ran between 100-200 chickens. When they should slow down or stop laying eggs, they would go to a place like Atwood's or tractor supply and get a bag of crushed sea shells and they would also get some cayenne pepper. They would put them in the chicken pen. They would spread the pepper on the chickens feed. They were free range chickens, but we would give them the same feed that the cattle got, and they would go crazy over it. Lol. They would start laying eggs again after a few weeks. 😀🐓🐓🍳🍳
Hi I bulit a Sauna myself in the same way you did in NH. You never ever put anything on the boards. You just need the right wood. Second you need a barrier of a special foil behind the boards, so no moister gets behind the boards. You also tape with aluminum tape all the seems of the foil. Otherwise you get mold and condensation in between. If you did not put a foil in between I sugest, you take the boards down again.
That's a ton of work, but major respect for fixing mistakes. It will be a great story faster than you know, and a great lesson for us :D
Guys you need to provide and install an underground propane and gasoline large storage tanks to last you at least 6 months. The storage gas tank is to provide your very own gasoline pump station. If the government will permit these installations. Then whenever you have major strikes and shutdowns in Panama you all can remain independent. I’m not surprised. A sauna is never made with sealed wood, has to breathe. It has to adjust the temperatures. It has to expand and contract. I’m surprised you didn’t go on UA-cam to see some videos on how best to do this! Anyway, good luck deserve to have it the way it will work so you can enjoy it!
Crazy chicken lady here...if you free-range your chooks you will still need to feed grain or something else as well for protein etc e.g you can create live food with larvae etc or sprout their feed if you want to improve quality. Mine love sprouted oats and sunflower seeds. Happy Birthday, Jordan!
Jordon, softwoods have a low thermal conductivity, which helps keep heat inside the sauna. Some softwoods that can be used in a sauna include:
Cedar, Hemlock, Aspen, Spruce, Pine, Basswood.
Cedar is a popular choice for barrel saunas because it's durable, resistant to decay, and has a pleasant aroma. Softwoods are good for kindling because they light easily and burn very hot briefly. They also smell good as they burn, almost like incense.
Pine is the most affordable wood for building saunas.
Hardwoods may get too hot for skin contact. Mahogany. Another very uncommon wood that is now being used for saunas due to the cost of cedar. Mahogany is a hardwood and like with most hardwoods used in saunas they get extremely HOT. So hot that sitting on this wood becomes very uncomfortable.
Research it and use a thermometer gun to check the heat before using so you don’t (bottoms and backs) get burnt.
You can treat sauna wood with paraffin oil to protect it. Paraffin oil is non-toxic and absorbs into the wood without forming a film that would feel hot against the skin.
As you learned you should not use treated wood while constructing a sauna at home because certain types of wood are pressure treated with chemicals to help them withstand the elements.

What a beautiful re-do! A lot of hard work, but so worth it. The wood looks beautiful. One concern is the lights. I remember reading comments in the last video that you need special sauna lights. Ones that can withstand heat, water/steam, be closed and waterproof for safety. Are those beautiful lights you hung going to be safe?
They made no mention of the lights being safe in a sauna so I assume they didn't check.
From a few comments I have read here and on the last vlog, mahogany can get very hot. I’m feeling little worried for them because of that.
Anyone who has been in a cedar sauna where you sit on a knot knows that hard woods are SO HOT! Cedar is soft so you don’t have that retained heat. I’m really concerned that the mahogany is going to burn you! Be careful.
Oyster shells ground down or ground your used eggshell to a powder and put in with their food mainly when they are molten these things may help

I ran a multi award winning program, I ran the program for 40 years. Hers what I have observed. I think it’s best to help your child have a healthy relationship with dissappointent. Its a part of life, no matter what. What I have found is that the children who have parents that run with pillows (‘for when a child is challenged’) those children seem to struggle, some just a bit some a lot, with personal challenges that come there way, and they will The key is to help nurture resilience. For Sadie to understand it’s Dads birthday has a itty bitty sting but the heartfelt experience of loving and celebrating and generously giving to dad is far greater than that itty bitty sting. Then, when Sadie is invited to her playmates birthday party she will have a healthier relationship with that experience…its hard, because you want to protect her from pain, but its part of being n the physical plane, there are natural boundaries everywhere. That is part of the growing we’re here to do. ❤Ok, thats the advice from this ol’ child care provider and mother, grandmother. Just let it simmer, I know you will continue to do the amazing parenting you do. We love you❤❤❤

Unfortunately my younger brother and I are a perfect example of what you have caringly explained. Although he is only one year younger, there is a HUGE difference in work ethics, attitude and handling what life throws at you and the only difference in our raising was he wasn't taught to deal with disappointment. He got what he wanted or pouted. He got what he wanted😢 As an adult man, it's a sad sight😢 Confused to why when he is wrong, why everyone just don't go along with it, even when he KNOWS he's wrong!😢 So you have explained this very well and very true and thank you for sharing your wisdom.
I agree wholeheartedly! Kids need to be naturally disappointed every once in a while to handle life. Don't fix things for your kids! Let them suffer consequences, and then next time, they will avoid the situation. It may have more decisive implications down the road.
I raised two boys and a girl. On the occasion of their mis-steps sometimes they'd incur consequences. Naturally, they'd look to me to bail them out of their difficulties -- but no -- I told them "Mama don't pay consequences." They, of course, shot back with [such and such's] parents paid their consequences. I told them "and what did they learn? Only that their parents would get them out of trouble -- not to never do that again!" They couldn't help but agree with my logic and knew Mama would always be there emotionally but won't pay their consequences. This they would have to rectify themselves. Painful lesson -- but entirely necessary for their growth.
for me the perfect temp for a sauna is 140.00 F my husband likes it at 180. 5 minutes in then a cool shower rinse then back in and repeat. If we did not live in a tall apartment building we would roll in the snow. You will need very sturdy benches and water proof lights.
I love how you showed your kid very early on that helping with tasks is fun. When she grows up, she is going to be able to do everything on her own. Congrats for being such a good parent❤🎉

Happy Birthday, Jordan!! I know that the whole tear-off was massively frustrating and a crap ton of extra work. I'm very proud of you for doing that so that the sauna will be built correctly! But don't forget, once those walls were down, you found the insulation that you wanted not to mention the aluminum to cover that insulation which all made the sauna that much better. Well done! And of course, Sadie is just brilliant!
You'll enjoy your sauna so much more now that you know that it's built right. Making mistakes is not the problem, not learning from them and quitting is. Kudos to you guys for taking a step back and coming back to that project stronger.

You've always got the pizza oven you can cook in. If you have a fire pit, use the oven grill over the fire pit to cook outside. Do you have extra bricks to set up a camp stove for emergencies? Can you find a galvanized aluminum wash pan or feed pan you can heat water to wash your clothes and string up some paracord for a clothes line? Even if you have to just drape the clothes for lack of clothes pins, it's fine Two five gallon buckets can also be used to wash clothes. Poke holes in one of the buckets like the bowl in the washing machine. Put it in the second bucket. Get a clean toilet plunger to use as the agitator. Put a hole in the lid of the bucket and put the plunger in the holey bucket then place the lid over it so you can access the end of the plunger's handle. Pump the plunger up and down for about ten minutes or longer if it's really dirty clothes. Use this same technique to rinse. Then attach a rope or paracord to the handle of the holey bucket and tie it to a tree or post, and wind up the bucket--let it spin a few times to get rid of all the water and soap. Repeat to rinse. You may need to rinse a couple of times to get rid of all the soap. Then hang to dry. Of course the buckets will only hold a small amount of clothing so don't try to put it all in the bucket.
Check your farm supply store for a washboard and clothes pins and line, and a free standing wringer. Or Amazon.
Oh my dear Jordan. I admire your determination, I also had great concern for your alergic response to the mask, dust, insulation and all that "stff". I worked in the filthy bowels of a coal mine. Looking back it was awful. The only thing worse could be that rockwool insulation in such a tiny space. I hate to admit it but I had a chuckle or too over your determination to get it done. I am stubborn and determined but not sure I could have stck such a job out to the finish.

BTW cows (rodeo stock bulls, bucking horses and steers) walked through the fence dividing our 1/4 section from the neibours 1/4 as though there was no fence.
Priority..... beef up the fence and put some heat on it. Teach your dogs to respect electric fence. Cows aren't smart they are all about eating. Eating machines with tough hide. Get yourself a cattle prod or two. I know it sounds mean. Think of the expression "like a bull in a china shop" picture the destruction!

Yes, but it's no small surprise that the firstborn, if worked with daily by loving, patient parents, are most often like this. Our son was just like Sadie, a real joy and he NEVER went through those 'Terrible Two's,' and on second thought, neither did son #2, who arrived 3 years later! I really DO believe being a stay-at-home mom is what does it! So, HUGE KUDOES goes to both parents who are totally devoted to her!
Agree. It was heart-breaking to me when my son was 4 yrs old that sociaization amongst chrological peers was imperative for his continued growth..
and initially, a heartache for me. Intellectually I knew Erickson's Developmental Tasks. To believe indifference would be selfish of me. Realizing the importance of animals requiring socialization in a litter or herd, I did not want to challenge what see in the animal world. Intellectually, I birthed a child to grow and be in a world with people and be a part of this world including the differences of thoughts and behaviors. Saddie is adorable and the relationship between a Mom and child is sacred. Eventually, the milestone of development and the pursuit to provide them with experiences is initially heartbreaking but a Mom hopefully puts the child's needs first and as Mom, we will observe and monitor the pups behavior and growth in the litter.
I hope you read this in time... I've built hundreds of saunas & found that porous wood (not hardwood) is best. Hardwood can often burn the skin - no matter what kind of treatment you do. I often do not treat the wood depending on the type of wood used - because many sealants (even organic/natural) can be harmful and toxic over time & depending on the level of heat the sauna may receive - which can be much higher than when in use. I recommend researching this thoroughly before rebuilding.
If you want your chickens to produce more eggs they need protien. Meat is best raw or cooked. I live in canada and we have chickens all year round with weather change we have to feed them more to have eggs in the winter(-20 c). Your windy season has made them turn their energy to keep warm and not in laying eggs. We feed seeds corn feed and all of our scraps they are great clean up crew. Cayene pepper and spicy foods are great for them aswell and will keep them free of worms/bugs.
Once a cow figures out how to get through or over a fence they won’t forget

after sanding the boards you need to spray them with water to raise the grain in the wood so you can sand that off before installing them again...then they will stay smooth......if you dont as soon as the moisture hits the boards in the sauna the grain will raise up ad not be smooth.

What a fantastic job y’all did and I like the lighter wood better! So cute to watch little Sadie, cooking along side her mama! She is so bright and adorable. She certainly has a mind of her own, especially taking over the birthday of her daddy. I love her imagination as she transformed her daddy into some type of baby character! Having full time parents around her has really given her an opportunity to observe and learn new things. She is learning to proceed with a plan and if mistakes are made, have a plan to repair the mistake and just do it! What a wonderful life Sadie, has to learn where things originate from and how to live off grid while utilizing skills and possibly repurposing items. Kudos to the parents! So glad you guys took the painful advice and reworked the error. Nice work-arounds, Jordan. I can relate to major mistakes in the midst of a big project… I’ve been there. Way to stick with it and work through the problem. I think the end product will be better (and definitely safer) as a result.

I hope you can bear to sit on those mahogany boards. It is hardwood and retains a lot of heat. Maybe you should consider to buy some cedar for the top of the bench. I don't think the benches are treated with oil, wax or something else. They won't rot because everytime the sauna is used everything dries out. All the benches I sat on in sauna's appear untreated. Oil heats up and causes burns.
Sauna is looking good, but shouldn’t the light fixtures have a water tight cover ? I would think the ones you chose would just keep tripping the GFI.

I'd check on how aluminum interacts with high temperatures. I know it's common in cookware but research indicates it may not be healthy to breath or ingest.

Here in Canada in the winter months (or maybe in all winter/colder climates) chickens go through a molting stage during this time they don’t lay eggs!
Here in the PNW, it's not super cold in winter - usually 40s w rain. About half our chickens molt, and the other half continue as if nothing changed.

That woodworker is back! This time to tell you you are doing great. The reason cedar is used a lot in saunas is because in most places it is cheaper than mahogany, but if that is different where you are, than using mahogany is a no-brainer. Also, with time, the mahogany will get that rich and beautiful dark reddish brown color naturally, so don't worry about it. And, I think i mentioned this before, you can change the setting on your planer to number 2 for faster feed through. A well-known UA-cam woodworker did some tests and found no significant difference in quality between the two settings... keep doing the great work you are doing and I'll be here enjoying watching it ;-)
The reason why (amongst other types of wood) cedar is used is that it is the best wood for the job. I have been in many sauna's in the past 45 years and I have never seen one made of mahogany. I suppose it is okay for the walls but not for the benches.
@@janpcs As I said in a comment on another video, i'm a woodworker, not a sauna expert, so i yield to your expertise on the matter. A quick search on google shows that mahogany is gaining popularity for saunas, but you are right in that it might not be the best for the benches as the wood tends to get very hot.
