The Squats (Homo sapiens rotundus) were short, stocky and physically hardy Abhumans who were on average 1.4 metres tall and were adapted to the heavy gravity conditions that predominated on the worlds they had settled near the core of the Milky Way Galaxy.
Of all the Abhuman types encountered by the Imperium, the Squats most closely resembled baseline Humans. Squats were the descendants of Human settlers who had colonised the worlds around the galactic core in the far distant past. These worlds are some of the oldest in the galaxy, formed when the galaxy's structure had not yet been fully stabilised.
The Squat species was ultimately destroyed by the invasion of an unnamed Tyranid splinter hive fleet that consumed their homeworlds in the late 41st Millennium, though some survivors still serve in the Astra Militarum, hoping for revenge and to find a new beginning for the remnants of their race. - Розваги

I think maybe their origin are just not grimdark compared to humans and the eldar heck even with orks. Maybe in the near future we'll have squats with more grimdarky backstory.
And thus Deep Rock Galactic was born with the mission to get rich and destroy the Tyranid scum
I was thinking doing this in my rogue trader round where my players fight side on side with the deep rock guys. Maybe fun.

Remember, kids, the Squats were canonically the primary driving factor for the development of Mk III power armor for the Space Marines because even Big E's vaunted superhumans kept getting thrashed trying to invade Squat strongholds.
And back then (in real world history) space marines were toughness 3, and squats were toughness 4.

If the squats come back I'd like them and the admech to be besties. Like the squats get a laugh out of feigning devotion to the omnissiah. and the admech can't tell that they're faking it so they just think that the squats are blessed by and loyal to the omnissiah.
So when shit goes down the admech are fiercely protective of the squats and the squats appreciate having someone willing to cover their 6 for once.

Despite what this video contends, that bit about the Tyranids eating the Squats was never actually canon. There's no official book put out by GW stating this to be the case. GW just stopped writing about Squats. They could bring them out of retirement at any time.

I think it's more like the fact that the squats where a one to one parody. Orks? Mix of fantasy orcs and Mad Max. Necrons? Mix of Egyptian Mummies and Robots. Squats? They're literally just dwarfs, but IN SPACE! So I can see where they were coming from. It's not so much that they were silly, but they wanted it to be it's own thing instead of just putting the word "space" in front of a bunch of fantasy tropes.

The Mechanicum is funkier as well in Rogue Trader. They are more like monks who study and learn old tech than owning entire worlds and running a strange alternate religion. A mechanicum monk is literally a dude in sandals with tonsur.
There is a general air of mystery about very advanced stuff. Things like a plasma gun and the air scrubbers powerful enough to maintain a hive. The religious mystery gets more intense as it moves from everyday technology and into weird pre-imperial super-science.
The Mechanicum didn't exit when the squat existed. The Admech wasn't even martian back then.

Most people think machines above the ordinary (a lasgun, a power drill, a landcar) are a little freaky. When you reach the superscience level, things actually start to become freaky.

The alleged "behind the scenes" story about the "why" they ended the Squats was that Andy Chambers' Orks could never win against them. Many of the battle reports from that time have been buried. His hatred of the Squats resulted with them being dropped in fourth/fifth edition, which he had a major hand in writing.
Man all the reasons I’ve heard for why they removed them suck, regardless of which one is true.
The level of simple, petty maliciousness involved makes me think it's true.

I like to think the real reason the orks traded with them was that they couldn't help but see them as the human version of gretchins and so not worth a proper fight.
Then after all the years of trading for all that good grog and dakka they felt guilty, so summoned the biggest waaagh they could to make it up to their squat friends.

I still hold on to my own personal pet theory that the imperium wiped them out for being a successful human faction outside of direct imperial control and then claimed it was the tyranids.

It would not be much of a stretch the Eldar wanting to get back at the Imperium over something. Though to attract the Tyranids. As they would know they were out there along the edges of the galaxy. Just send off a pychic blast through the warp. Get the attention of a splinter group of Tyranids, they head that way. They have a snack and leave the world. Being that the Squat Homeworlds were pretty much barren anyway. There still be all those resources. As Tyranids do not really stick around after they absorbed every bit of biomass.
Though I swear I heard the Tyranids also even suck up all the minerals on a planet too. Just leaving the world a literal husk. Nothing left. Yet maybe I am wrong or that is another Tyranids swarm that does that.

My biggest question is HOW did the Tyranids managed to invade their homeworld to such an extent that they almost wiped them out (a task that the Orks and Space marines tried and failed at). Wasnt their planet relatively close to Terra? How did a hive fleet managed to get this close? The only way this makes sense is if the highter ups in the Imperium let that happen because they didnt trust them anymore or some bullshit like that

They didn't. The squats were made up of an Empire of them (League of Votunn) and only one of the minor kingdoms communicated regularly with Imperium got nommed, not the squats as a whole.

Space Dwarves need to be a thing again, I absolutely fucking love dwarves in games and fantasy and I was so disappointed when I first found out there weren't any, then I was very excited to hear that they did exist and then I was immediately crushed that they don't exist anymore really.
As a faction they don’t exist but there are some left in the imperium. Also the tau have a species just for mining I think they were called something like the demigerg but not entirely sure. The only description we have of them is how they’re short, live entirely on ships and go around mining.
I believe at some point in the psychic awakening campaign there was a sighting of a ship with the squats heraldry on it.
Boy do I have a game for you. Check out Deep Rock Galactic. The game is all about space dwarves, and the enemy you fight may as well be tyrannids.

really important piece of lore about why the squats are so different is that the time rate near the galactic core is wildly dilated due to weird gravity fuckery so while the average human age of strife lasted about 5-6 thousand years the squat one lasted about 30-40 thousand years relatively.
Well they could just have Trazyn have like an army of Squats that were almost overrun in his museum cause he knew they would have been nearly extinct and do the revival that way and I don't remember the book where it was but an Mechanicus exploration fleet got destroyed by an Squat fleet in one of the newer books

@@MrShark-gi7ii ain't much to tell, just that in one of the books there is a very short line of an adeptus explorer sending a message how some unknown space ships are destroying the exploration fleet and at the end he exclaims "hold on they are squa-" and thats about it
PRIMARIS SQUATS
The popularity of the Squats is pretty much the reason Mantic Games made the Forge Fathers one of the very first factions in Warzone.
There's also a SF Dwarf line from Scibor Miniatures and a Dvergr Commando line from Kromlech. I think the Forgefathers is still the best looking, definitely the most complete line out there, but there are multiple options for wanna-be Squat players.
Great stuff, BUT you missed the most recent development... in Pariah, the final book in the Psychic Awakening series, there is a transcript of a fragmented transmission from a Mechanicus explorator fleet coming under attack from a fleet 'previously believed to be extinct- the Squa-' and then the transmission cuts out.
So don't be so sure that there won't be a full revival at some point.... don't be so sure at all.>:)

@@devinmctrusty9178 you can google "squat tech-priest" for the old metal model, the recent one is "Tech-Priest Grombrindal."
Technically, Grombrindal is a fantasy dwarf and the mascot of Games Workshop's magazine White Dwarf, but they occasionally bring out various themed models of him and the one for Christmas 2019 was a tech-priest, so I'd say that version counts as a squat.
I just looked them up and they are adorable.
They just need to introduce the new race called the "Squatriani" and make their "Sniper Howitzer" a very expensive AbHuman guard unit.

Yes that is a shame, in Pariah they have a small teaser. As the explorator fleet recognizes their hull markings I am assuming these are the old stronghold squats. They were also mentioned in Liber Xenologis (which got released very recently). Besides the Necromunda Range i remember from back in the day some Squats allied with chaos. I imagine some of them still live in the warp or a dark corner of space. Some other squats joined the Mechanicus, some likely still operate on admech forgeworlds. Both the chaos and mechanicus squats had official models.
Working on a squat project myself (so far hoarded over 50 official models including chaos, mechanicus and anniversary grombrindals). For as far as I know they were never fully killed off.
I remember reading that the fan reaction to them being removed was so extreme that GW had to ban people from their forums.
Cue jokes about the Inquisition silencing anyone who mentions the Squats existing. And while I'm having trouble finding confirmation, it seems this might be canon with the "Letter(s) of Reversal", wherein the Inquisition admits they enforced silence for the sake of morale, before blaming the error on the Administratum and Mechanicus (who immediately reply "no, you")

Relistening a year later and the squats are returned, DK and Bricky's conversation about how they would never be fully back is amusing.
GW has forgotten the 40k dictum: "It's stupid, but it's fun!" Make it fun, and people won't mind that you haven't "done justice" to space dwarves.
I'm convinced that canon-wise, the Squats were still a part of the Imperium for a very long time, but the Mechanicus have been diligent in deleting/altering records of them b/c the Squats were the only other group within the Imperium that could reliably build, fix, and occasionally innovate on technology to the point of outdoing the Mechanicus who worked to exterminatus them.
The biggest counter 2 Jervis Johnson was at the same time the squats got killed off. There were special morale rules for certain orc units that would make them if they failed a morale roll could end up either convinced that they were invisible and walk across the board or start breakdancing in place.
DK did an amazing job. Hope we get to see him hosting again!

Well the space dwarfs are basically early draft version of Mechanicus, but with a skin of Warhammer Fantasy dwarf. Mechanicus is a rather more interesting idea, which they then used them to replace squats.

Squats are back guys! Called 'Kin' by those they consider friends, but known professionally as 'League of Votann'. Finally! Something that I could really get into that could potentially be as close as a faction in 40k could be towards the 'Good' side! Wohoo!!!
Fantasy dwarves have really boomed in popularity, so hopefully the squats will come back in their full glory because I can easily see them being the first minis I buy
