"You gotta carry 4 sandbags? Man, that's heavy" My dudes. My militarily innocent providers of content. You carry the bags folded and empty in your rucksack, and you fill them with the dirt you pick up while digging the trench.

    • @silver1340
      @silver1340 2 роки тому +90

That... does make sense... but then they're not so much "sandbags", but just "bags". They don't have any sand in them.
But you also said they can be filled with dirt, so they should be called dirtbags! Or maybe we should still just call them bags? Dirt sandbags if you want a compromise in naming, but that still doesn't make sense, as there is no sand in them.
That could, of course, be fixed if you throw in a mixture of sand and dirt, but how would you have access to both? Would you have to carry sand with you wherever you go? In the desert or a beach, you can get all the sand you need, but hardly any dirt. So, would you have to carry dirt with you instead?
Oh! I get it! You carry dirt in your dirtbags if you're gonna fight in a desert or near a beach, in which case you can put the sand into them, to make them dirt sandbags. Then you carry sand if you're gonna fight anywhere, where sand isn't easily accessible!
OP, you're wrong! You do have to carry filled dirt- or sandbags with you. And you said you are knowledgeable about this topic.
It's so easy to see through your internet lies, how does it feel to be so utterly destroyed by my intellect, huh?
      I rest my case.

Ironically, this seems like it would just cause even more of a morale issue.
Imagine you’re some newly recruited by-the-book guardsman, and the planet you’re stationed on happens to be a tomb world. With absolutely no warning at all, legions of strange metal monsters just pop into existence in the middle of the battlefield and start disintegrating your platoon. After emptying half a lasgun battery into one before watching it get right back up, you get to cover before pulling out your trusty primer to try and figure out what these things are. Your last thought before being turned to dust is that not even your superiors have any idea what these things are.
And that’s just for basic Necron warriors. Emperor save you if you run into anything stronger.

A sentry found sleeping at his post (in an active war zone) is still punishable by death according to article 113 of the US Uniform Code of Military Justice. It's at the very least worth a dishonorable discharge and like a decade in a military prison. It's taken that seriously because it compromises the security of your entire unit, not just you. Luckily, the US military at least doesn't make people into servitors lol.

A small correction beyond what L. R. said is that article 113 of the UCMJ covers Drunken or reckless operation of a
vehicle, aircraft, or vessel. The offense involving sentries sleeping can be found on section A of article 95 which covers offenses by sentinel or lookout, with the punishments found on subsections 1 and 2.

People often laugh a the idea of these fictional people worshiping the God Emperor. I dunno, I can easily see it.

    • @Bluecho4
      @Bluecho4 2 роки тому +39

Hell, that's also true of someone living in the bowels of a hive. They're surrounded by ancient technology and work every day scooping solid matter out of a sewage stream, but they aren't any more informed about anything than the peasant farmer on an medieval world. The only thing they have to worry about are cops and the gangs (but alas, I repeat myself), and the occasional _thing_ living deeper down.
That same person who gets shipped off to a distant Imperial world has as little reference as the dirt farmer. Surrounded by monsters, being screamed at by an angry man in a hat, and trying not to die. (Also, the dirt farmer at least has seen the sky. Imagine being the hiver stepping off the transport and seeing the vast expanse of NOTHING stretching above you forever. That's a quick trip to developing severe agoraphobia.)
If the hiver saw Celestine come to their rescue, their religious experience would be just as genuine as that of the dirt farmer next to him.

Then the entire city suddenly gets sieged because some Chaos cultists have set up bases, and the person suddenly gets swept up by the violent riots and rebellions. Suddenly SoBs show up, and you'll see Guardsmen, Sororitas, and even Inquisitors for the first time in your life. If the person's lucky, they may survive to tell the tales of actually seeing militant servants of the Emperor.

Court martial with an other-than-honorable discharge in the VERY least, and it wouldn't surprise me if someone went to prison for it during those conflicts. Doing it in training inevitably leads to an ass-chewing, loss of respect with peers and superiors, and probably a good hour's worth of PT in the dirt.

On the take good care of your feet part.
In WW2, an Italian writer escaped Auschwitz with the aid of a Greek salesman. In the days following their escape, the writer's shoes broke, and the Greek opened his backpack, which contained several pairs of shoes, handed a new pair to the Italian, and told him a single phrase:
A man without shoes might as well be a dead man.
And if you think about it, he was absolutely right. They had to walk across half Europe, and while clothes could be fashioned out of plenty of things, and food could be traded, foraged, or stolen, shoes were hard to come by, and if you ever walked barefoot in the nature, you can agree with me that you can't do it for month, especially in winter.
This story can be found in the writer's autobiography about this event "if this is a man" by Primo Levi, and i believe it to be a true story, because it frustrated me to no end seeing how useless Levi was during the whole ordeal. The dude would have kicked the bucket several times if not for his fellow prisoners.
Like the dude was "standing in the middle of the road like a deer in the headlights while the Nazi that are looking for you are patrolling" kind of useless.

Bit of history, as a Roman legionary falling asleep on guard duty, especially the night watch, was a killing offense, often the judge jury and executioner was your fellow grunts.
Because you are being trusted and are the reason they can sleep at night believing they will wake up in the morning, so if you’re were asleep and enemies came by, you just killed your entire camp
Falling asleep in the military while on guard duty isn’t taken lightly. Different militaries have different rules but I think given the horrors they face, the commissar isn’t the one that will carry out the justice, probably be your fellow guardsmen you just put at risk.

If anyone is wondering why Necrons are never mentioned in any of the Imperial Guard Primers: The Imperium intentionally keeps the existence of Necrons a secret from as much of the population as possible. This is due to Necrons being extremely rare to encounter, as well as the fact that they are _fucking terrifying_ and they don't want to weaken morale.

The taking care of your feet is super accurate. If you’ve been in a multi day hike and you don’t keep your feet dry you’ll suffer. Charging socks and stuff. It's possible that certain versions of the game could exist amongst the nobility of some Imperial worlds, but likely a heavily censored version for the sake of Imperial propaganda, where all the enemies are ludicrously inaccurate and debuffed to hell whereas Guardsmen are made a lot better and something like a Space Marine, due to the religious cult of personality the Imperium props around them, would be more broken than even anything Matt Ward could have written in his wildest trips.

You guys would be in awe of the sheer amount of shit we carried in the field (former US army, 101st Airborne). Honestly from what I heard you say and what I read for myself, the stuff the guard carry is not all that crazy tbh. Also the sandbags are common shit to carry actually, they're not full and are rolled up into about the size of a large burrito sized thing with a strap or tape keeping it rolled up. Funny thing is we always emptied the sandbags rather than cut them open, so we could reuse them.
As for the stuff about then taking note of what/who is where when taking over watch or a post is really accurate. When you take over a guard shift say in a foxhole or something, there's a range card that shows known or suspected enemy positions or possible cover they could use. You talk to the guy you're relieving of duty and he tells you what the local situation is.
Honestly kinda cool how similar this guide is to real life.

And footcare is not that strict, it's an absolute deal breaker in the field. Can't walk=can't fight, can't run=can't avoid explosions. Trench foot and boot blisters are the WORST, especially together. Enemy vehicle, uniform, and unit type recognition is a huge thing too. If say, you are some young 20 something year old newbie and can't tell the difference between an Abrams, Leopard, or T-72 tank you might fuck up your own guys or allies. Knowing what type of unit insignia/uniform enemy infantry, scouts, armor, or other units use is critical to knowing what you're fighting. If I drop a Russian soldier and look at his uniform and see a zigzag arrow in a diamond, that's combat engineers. Red star with scroll and parachute? Airborne. So if an ork has blue or purple with crossed knives, he would likely be a Kommando nob.

The punishment for falling asleep on post (in an active war zone) is still death. Most of the punishments written are just a step above what we do today in the military which helps the uplifting primer read like something actually real. Also like in real life your command (and most importantly the commissariat) have discretion in deciding punishment.

And for the feet thing, it's also normal irl because you don't want fungi and gangrene. Marching for days with dirty feets, sweaty socks, and closed boots make your toes to rot

On the subject of taking care of your feet, it is a major thing in modern militaries. They don’t want soldiers to get foot issues, mainly trench foot which you can get extremely easily. On a 11 mile March we would swap out of socks 2-3 times. You don’t want sweat to build up in your boots, a real possible problem.

My favorite part of the book is honestly how it comes off as being written by a committe of bureaucrats that have very strong opinions of what it's proper to teach people, but no fucking idea of what they're talking about. Which, you know, is also incredibly 40k.

Something I want to know: Did any veteran guardsman (or guardswoman) ever question why these booklets are still being printed? Not just the guardsmen, the commissars and generals, etc.
Do they all secretly agree that the primer sucks ass, but remain quiet about it because the thing is promoted by the propaganda ministry or whatever, and speaking out about it would get them killed?
It feels like that's the case, as the "joke" that it's merely toilet paper is so widespread. But wouldn't that eventually reach the propaganda department that would then flip their shit from hearing that?

5:03- Thank you. Thank you Shy (I’m sorry if that’s not spelt right. I’m going off of someone else’s spelling from awhile ago and no one ever corrected him so….) for cutting out 20 minutes of what should only be a 30 second joke! It’s kinda like a song you loved when it first came out. But after all the stations played it about 40 times a day every day……… Yeah
