    The T'au (Imperial binomial classification: Tau tau), also spelled Tau in older records and pronounced "TOW," are a young, humanoid and technologically-advanced intelligent species native to the Eastern Fringes of the Milky Way Galaxy.
    They are fighting to expand their interstellar empire and extend a philosophical concept they call the "Greater Good" (Tau'va in the T'au Lexicon) to all the intelligent species of the galaxy.
    The T'au claim to be a peaceful species when possible, asking if others will join their cause voluntarily instead of fighting against them.
    However, if their peaceful overtures are refused, the T'au may well decide to conquer a planet and add it to their growing interstellar empire for the Greater Good, searing the flesh from the bones of anyone who stands against their benign intentions.

      Honestly, I could see a strong argument for Guilliman being the anime protagonist. But that's the beauty of Warhammer, it's universe is big enough for multiple protags. Yarrick and Gazkull, Guilliman, Magnus and Russ, Abbadon, Eldrad, Trayzen, Vex...and dont forget Ciaphas Cains spinoff series. There's so many strong characters.
      Also, the more I think about it, the more I want a tragic anime about Magnus. It's not hard to see why bruva alfabusa made him a big part of his series.
      That being said, Farsight fits the most tropes still.

      @@CdrChaos Now while I agree the Mechanicum or Adeptus Mechanicus have a lot of problems, I think it's a little much to accuse them of singlehandedly stunting humanities technological growth. Sure they don't allow inventing except for a select few of their highest orders... But if you think they have the capability of policing all the hive worlds of the imperium... Well, they don't. And if someone is making things better, I'd say a governor is more likely to look the other way. No, what I believe is the more crucial issue is two things. One, a complete lack of educational system to not only help people understand how things work, but more importantly why. Which honestly the Adeptus Mechanicus has likely completely forgotten by now. And secondly a surplus that allows people to sit on their heels and come up with things. Before modern times in our actual history the only inventors were really the nobility who has both the time to come up with ideas, as well as the resources to make them happen. So it's no wonder nothing has really progressed for humanity when things are so sucky for them.

      ehh debatable. That’s a bit far stretch.
      Nobunaga adopt a heavy use of gunpowder weaponry after the said weapon is imported by European (Portuguese to be exact) who usually travel to Japan from their colony in Southeast Asia. Japan on its own did not have the cutting edge of gunpowder technology (unlike Tau) despite gunpowder is introduced from China at 13 century, about the same time as Europe. Nobunaga starts using it due to the fact that matchlock are by all means, way more advanced to a point of revolutionary in the eyes of Japanese.
      No matter bow, crossbow or gunpowder, the general massive usage of ranged weaponry is quite common in East Asia, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Mongols, etc. It is a preference of warfare in the entire geographical region, not some Japanese specialty.
      All in all I feel like Tau having their big guns are not something specifically have to be related to pre-modern Japan, they are just big ass modern looking mech-exo suit, since everyone in the setting are either space-middle-age feudal fascists, iron-age equivalents 5head fungus, space-undead-Egyptian-terminator, definitely-not-fantasy-wizard elf people, GW probably just want a thematically more Sci-fi faction that is less grimdark and thus inspired by Gundam here comes the Tau.

      Even if it's not intended it's an interesting parallel considering what's brought up in the podcast.

    • @GGWP-gm5cq
      @GGWP-gm5cq 3 роки тому +2

      @@KothraStreamdiver hmm, I get ur point. What I am trying to say is the range affinity isn’t really a “Japanese specialty”, it is common everywhere in East Asia and I don’t even think Tau are that “Japanese”. There are many difference on how they behave, how their technology reflect their military and just how their society function. If u really ask me I would argue from these aspects they are bit more Indian, with the whole caste and stuffs. But people seems to only focus on the “Japanese” part to a point that they will go into every minuscule detail to make Tau as Japanese as possible so they get every reason to call the player weeb lol.
      For me they get like a spark of Japanese flavor in a good way (their Samurai-ish futuristic armor for example). And I do like the fact that GW don’t go too hard on making a literal copied and pasted history of Japan into 40k. They did that shit in Fantasy with many many different cultures on earth and that shit can be quite lazy.

    Honestly there is two (and I guess a third related to the first two) reasons why Tau have as much fan backlash even today:
    1: Y'know how when the primaris were first revealed they were advertised as nearly 100% superior in every way, but over the last few years that shining perfection has been marred with some actually decent character development such as the reveal of primaris having chapter flaws still? That's basically the same road the Tau Empire took, starting out as this nearly comically squeaky clean diplomatic force in the timeline whose methods were just SO MUCH BETTER than the Imperium, and thus over time they've also taken a bit of the grimdark with stuff like the Farsight Enclave's appearance and their growing edge around the ethereals.
    2: Fish of Fury. You can thank this for why we can shoot through other units for the most part, as devilfish were built in such a way that when pillboxed end to end in previous editions, you couldn't target the enemy infantry inside the gap this caused, and this became about as abused as the Iron Hands Dreads after their Psychic Awakening book. This got to the point less 'That Guy' tau players actively avoided lists with their dedicated transport so they weren't given shit for it.
    3: This is a general thing for internet culture and fandoms, but Warhammer fans are fond of repeating the same anecdotes and mematics long after they no longer apply, and some people just get irrationally stuck at the image they got in their head from first impression that they'll not want to dig deeper.

      Auxiliaries would be cool too as it gives designers all the creative freedom they want as they'd be designing new races without fear of them being squatted. Plus I think it would go pretty well with tabletop balance as you could use auxiliaries to balance the playing field with specialized units so you aren't completely helpless in certain circumstances. Just make the cost so that you can't cover yourself for every weakness without performing subpar in every category. That's just me though and I've never played Tabletop outside a couple matches so I don't know what the repercussions would be to balance. Just seems that tau have always had shooting be their entire shtick and that being the backbone of the faction kinda crippled their balance as if it was too powerful everyone else would get deleted but if it was a little too weak you'd get deleted. Just my take though.

      "recent" being in the lore. every other faction has been around for 40k years or more. the tau have like 1k as a faction. they are young...and several factions could literally accidentally wipe them out of existence.

    Interesting thing to note about historical Samurai. The katana was a side weapon. Their main weapons, as I understand it, were the bow and spear. With the bow used on horseback.
    A thing to note about Tau military doctrine. A lot of tactics and strategies early Tau used are taken directly from "The Art of War". The Killing Blow, The Patient Hunter, opting for quick mobilization of forces rather than strong garrisons, the use and assimilation of former enemy forces, etc. are all in that book.

    Personally, I never had any problem with the Ta'u being an unambiguous 'good guy' faction within the 40k setting, simply because they are too small to matter. They are generally ignored by the other factions, capable of defending their territory when pressed, and are making territorial gains, but those gains are miniscule compared to the campaigns of the other big actors in the setting. They provide sort of an outlet or different flavor to the setting that provides a lot of interesting story and gameplay concepts, without really having any sort of impact on the greater setting.

    I think I agree with bricky my personal headcannon for the more darker interpretation for the T'au was the ethrals were kinda highly manipulative politicians and maybe had a kinda more equal than everyone else kinda of thing going on with them. I feel like it's less of a jump from no psykers to maybe some psykers or just smelling good enough to make people follow your orders.

    • @ridleydidnothingwrong
      @ridleydidnothingwrong Рік тому +3

      With the worms it could be both although I don't know how to feel about the idea. Ethereals being able to mind control never Sat right with me as it just paints an entire group as evil and really does a disservice to characters like aun'shi who genuinely have the interests of his people at his heart. With the worms some more desperate ethereals now seeing how easily the tau could crumble might take it on themselves to take a more direct approach to keep dissidents at a minimum especially since there's been a fragmentation already with the enclaves. And honestly given the state of things in 40k could you blame them? Honestly the big thing I want for tau is to focus less on the mechs and more on auxiliaries as they're having a sort of identity crisis and I want the old tau back where there were only some mechs and not 1000. Don't get me wrong the mechs are cool but i feel like they're forgetting about auxiliaries and they have much more promise as far as cool designs go as you could design entire races instead of just a new robot suit.

    I actually kinda like the tau, with the exception that farsight enclaves are the best possible version of the tau. I wish we got more farsight stuff tbh. I feel like out of everyone the enclaves are one of the few unambiguously good factions. Even the tau empire has nasty shit with how they treat both non etheral tau and non tau races but farsight enclave actually seems to be trying to make a better place in the shithole Galaxy
