BLACK BALANCE YOUR C200, SERIOUSLY
Вставка

- We've been gone for a few weeks with shoots across the country and Canada... But we're back! We'll be up front about the fact that this video is pretty rough. The audio is no where near where we want it, but we think the content is still good and that it's better to post something now rather than go a month without posting. We're still figuring out how to squeeze Butter TV shoots and edits in between client work, so it's a work in progress. Bear with us.
This week we're here to explain Auto Black Balancing on the Canon C200. Here's what we've found from working with the C200 and what seems to work best for us to reduce noise in camera before you get to post production.

Your "histogram" is the waveformmonitor (WFM) ;-), where you can see the voltage of the picture - all lines stacked. You can see where the signal is (left, or more right). For example vertical grey-step-bars in the picture get a stairway. A histogram is a frequency distribution - how much pixels/clusters represent a certain value (vertical bars - usualy one for every bit depth) - there you see mass spreading, but no location is relatable. (The the grey-step-bars are nearly same high spikes there.)
Doing an ABB before and during every shoot is extremely important! Thanks for spreading the word.
Yes Rod! Especially for people transitioning from DSLR and mirrorless cameras like the 5D and A7S to cinema cameras, it's not the most intuitive concept and easily overlooked. Cannot stress ABB enough if you're shooting RAW and plan to work in C-LOG space in post!
I guess you said Historgram when You would like to say Waveform. Don't worry about. Your video was very useful. Thanks a lot.
REAL good straight to the point content man.
Thanks! We try to cut the fluff
Please keep doing videos
Great video, thank you.
Thanks for this
Thanks for the comment! Shoot us any questions you might have!
I didn’t even know ABB was a thing! Thanks for the tip Joel!
No problem, man! It’s a super helpful tip that has really helped us out. Thanks for watching!

Thank you 🙏
Good dude
YO!!!! Just ran into your channel!! Great video!!!!
thank you so much!!!
Good stuff man. Audio makes it a little rough on the ears, but still gave it the big thumbs up.
I like that name, Butters TV 📺
dude you gold.
love your energy love your flow and most of all love your topic. It’s nice to talk about real finesse details without waiting for 2 min to someone finsishing his hyperactive intro or eating cerealsz
see if you can boost your sound a little bit, in post i mean.
love, #sub
Dude LOVE U MAN
thanks for your support
This is our early days of UA-cam, recording audio with iPhone and all that. We’ll keep the levels in mind!!!!
What do you want to see more from us?
Really appreciate the tips on ABB and waveform. I have a C100 M2 and obviously this applies to me too. Kind of frustrating in the C100 that the waveform covers the audio levels in the display. Glad you're honest but I have to give you a hard time about the audio in this piece - great content, but always remember people will forgive poor video before they will forgive poor audio (former sound guy-sorry)
helpfull
Great job! I'd like to see more content about exposure and white balance for the C200. (I do run and gun event work and need to nail it on the shoot day.)
Got it! We'll totally make a video about that. Do you shoot cinema raw for your event work or shoot MP4?
Awesome! We shoot mp4 since the events typically span over a few days. In controlled studio sessions we would be shooting RAW but that hasn't happened just yet.
Also, you got yourself a subscriber! Thanks for the content!
Thanks for subscribing. It means a lot to us.
Great vid! Quick question. When you black balance, do you have to leave the camera on while you remove the body cap and put the lens back on? Or can you turn the camera off after the ABB to put the lens back on? Thanks for any insight! :)
Thank you for a good tip! A short question for you about exposing to C200 camera. When i used 18%gray card, where it must be placed on my histogram? It's about 50 or 40 or 34?
Technically it should be around 40, but we don't really have it down to the scientific level. It also depends either you're shooting Wide DR, C-Log or C-Log 3. For us, what we pay the most attention to is avoiding highlights clipping above anything else.
Very well done video, please I would like to know is it important that the camera stays still during the calibration? or I can hold it in my hands during the calibration phase, thanks
don't think it matters, as long as you got the sensor covered
How can we black balance pocket 6k ?
I just got the C200 and I am struggling with how noisy the sensor is. The black balance didn't really help. Hopefully I'll discover some horrendous user error soon and get this cleaned up before my shoot in a few days. Wide DR seems OK but everything else I try is full of noise! I invested a chunk of change in this camera so I could get the 4:2:2 12 bit Raw 15 stop advantage over my 5D Mark 4 but I never saw noise like this with that camera. if the first three stops of DR are unusable can Canon really claim 15??
Hmmm.... Which C-log are you using??
From our experience shooting RAW is great in terms of color fidelity and detail, but we’ve been struggling with noise as well. We avoid shooting anything higher than 640-800
In all cases if you change iso or WB white balance…… then ABB after
hey, we started fully embracing c log 3 in our workflow and it is CLEAN.
if you start shooting 4K raw, the raw development setting defaults to c log 2. c log 2 allows you 15+ stops of dynamic range at the expense of noise. c log 3 offers you less DR, but it is worth it. unless you're shooting ski trip, you should be okay to sacrifice a little bit of dynamic range for clean footage.
Since you have shot on red and canon. How would you compare the noise performance of red vs canon?
Couldn’t really compare cause there are so many variables and situations. When we use Red cameras, there’s also considerable amount of additional lighting and thought put into it coming from the budget of the project demanding RED. C200 is much more run and gun camera for us, which also means it in a way... deals with worse lighting conditions than we put our REDs to, if that makes sense. Also depends on what version of RED too. C200 is generally super clean with C Log 3 or wide dr, RED depends if you shoot ProRes or R3D
Very interesting! I have noticed that Clog2 is a little bit more noisy and I need more time to grade it correctly.
I will give it a try with CLOG3.
Thanks for sharing this content!
Been doing that, still getting a bit of noise in the background with 800 Iso.
What gamma curve do you use? If you shoot c log 2, noise is a given at almost any point
Butter TV what do you mean? I'm using clog in raw which is clog 2. I import into FCPX and adjust exposure and saturation from there without a LUT
where are you located, I'm in the Vancouver area and am thinking about moving up from a Canon 5D mark 4 to a C200
HEY We’re based in Los Angeles! Totally worth it if you have the money for it
@@butter_la what's the difference between using the XFAVC CODEC, OR THE mp4 codec?
XF AVC you gain like 10 more megabits per second and you get the file naming scheme that’s identical to the raw light clips. They’re both 8 bit so our take is it doesn’t matter that much. We do XF AVC if we’re doing proxy workflow so that filenames match exactly
it's waveform, tho.
What do you mean?
I proper audio, then this would push your video way up. Thanks for posting.
For sure!
Butter TV (with proper spelling, my comments would rank higher too) / I proper audio = with proper audio
fuuuuuuk this whole time
RIGGGHT??
So glad we can help tho
