I am using A4A and the AI works fine with my setup. It adds more depth and makes me feel like listening in a large theater. I prefer it to be on for movies and concerts. For music, it is better to be off for Hifi lossless content.
Disable virtual speakers in the Sound menu. I've always enjoyed this feature for movies in both my 2080 and now the A6A. It's always off for music, but it helps a smidge for movies. Making the sound a tid bit more dynamic and the separation of channels is more distinct.

Thanks for the observation. I have the older 2019 RX A2080 which had AI introduced the year before.
NEVER quite cared for it for the reason you mention + it tended to collapse all sound towards the front LCR (poor 5.1 or 7.1).
NOW, It did add to a "sense" of higher wall height for planes going overhead albeit in a non-locatable reflective array like an old ProLogic movie theatre.

Hey Techno Dad, I was thinking of purchasing the calibration tool kit on Blu-ray, but I’m a little concerned about the compatibility issues you have listed. I have a Panasonic UB 820. I realize some of the downloaded files may not work on there, but if I just purchase a disk will that play in my 4K Blu-ray player so I can use it effectively? Since there is no return policy, I want to make sure I’m not just throwing money away here. Thanks! @TechnoDad
It’s not wrong. It’s just like using one of the DSP modes that the Yamaha has except it analyzes scene by scene and decides what to do. so it’s doing exactly what it’s supposed to do. Read the manual.
I never said it was wrong, I said to turn it off. If you are watching Atmos content and you care about artist's intent, then it should be off. If it's supposed to analyze the content and adjust accordingly, why did it not give the echo on all speakers as all of them would play my voice? So it should be adjusting and adding echo to all the speakers in the call out, and not just the rear heights.
@@TechnoDad yeah I don’t know if it knows what to do during callouts, I just wanted to clarify that it is a DSP mode and the echo that it adds is normal.

First YPAO does suck! I was watching the Academy Awards and I was like what is up with my A8A it like auto selected Surrond AI and it sounded terrible. We were also watching Dune 2 same thing. I thought again there must be something wrong with my A8A.
Turning off Surround AI fixed my issue. I noticed issues with audio in my front array. Thank you so much for this. I wish there was something in the settings to never select Surround AI. Techno Dad this was a great clip and that’s the reason I follow you! In my home theater I am running a 7.4.2 audio setup.

Like Yamaha DSP modes have been for years all this stuff is to taste. If your calibrating anything in a Yamaha it should be set to straight and ypao off certainly. My 2018 3070 doesn't have surround ai. From what I've heard some like it some don't. It in theory adapts to content on the fly to improve the soundfield.
Gene at audioholics gave the latest version of ypao pretty good marks. Given you have a completely untreated room there I personally think it would be silly to not take advantage of Yamaha's reflected sound control calculations in a space like that.
the Yamaha Ai makes non ATMOS sound like ATMOS.
I suppose it is the echo that causes using Ai with home theater to seem to open up and extend the sound in your room.When you shut it off things sound more dynamic and clean. Would like you to take a shot at YPAO volume off or on. Shutting off adaptive DNC added so much life to the sound that was muffled with DNC. I think Yamaha has a powerful sound yet they offer so many options to tinker with the sound that it can drive you crazy.
I think that’s the issue with a lot of AVR companies. They think they are smart by making all these options to enhance the sound as opposed to just giving us what we want. Something that does its job without issues that sounds good. It’s very simple.

On another note, Yamaha does not support TOP Middle channels, it only does Top Fronts and Top Rears, so for my Yamaha A6A, when i play your Spatial CD test for the Top MIDDLE channels (which i don't have either), the sound comes 100% from the Top FRONT channels which is pretty annoying,...I was hoping the processor would balance the Top Middle between the TOP FRONT and TOP REAR at a 50/50 ratio. Give it a shot please when you have a minute and maybe the result on your Denon as well

I have noticed something similar, but with front left and right. If a voice comes from one side rather than the center speaker, it also echos in the corresponding R/L rear speaker. Only if Surround AI is on. Have you encountered that as well?
I think the front L & R speakers did have a little echo in them, but it was not as noticeable as the rear heights.
@@TechnoDad Sorry, what I meant was that the sound from the front L/R actually bleeds into the rear L/R, which causes an unnatural echo effect. But only when Surround AI is on.

There is, but compatibility could be an issue. Do you have a media player?
