I just got diagnosed with cerebral ataxia. I’m 64, always active, played sports late into life. But looking back did notice problems.
Balance, walking, eyes, head movement all a problem.
Will take your videos to heart.

I'm actually crying right now. I am so glad I found your channel. I had the left half of my cerebellum removed due to an avm. I had a procedure done, but everything went wrong and I had to have emergency brain surgery and they just removed the whole left side of my cerebellum.. I woke up completely paralyzed. I had to relearn how to walk and talk. I was in my early 20s, so I was too old to get help if I was a child and I was too young to get help if I was a senior. I was in a lost area. I have done and tried many things. I have been to many physical therapists, but they don't do anything to help all of the issues I have. This definitely includes balance issues as well as ataxia. My surgery was 16 years ago, but I want to do everything I can to be the best version I can be. I think I'm going to look into a neuro physical therapist. I honestly didn't know this was a specialty. I have really been let done by all of the professionals I feel. I still try to keep a positive attitude and try to live my life the best I can. Sorry this was so long. I am just overwhelmed and blessed that I found you. Thank you.

I'm so sorry you have had this problem for so many years - I feel sorry for myself and I've only had it for 1.5 yrs. I finally saw a Neurologist last year and he actually gave me a diagnosis of Spinocerebellar Ataxia, what a relief that was to finally have a diagnosis. He can't do anything to help but it might be useful for you to look at all these replies. I do wish you all the best with your recovery and I hope you get your life back. Warmest regards, Carol

I have been struggling with balance issues and walking issues for a little over a year now and they still don't have a diagnosis in neurology here I am getting a second opinion in April of 2022 at the University at UW and I am excited I also need to exercise more but I've been so overwhelmed with this because my whole life has been about good balance and good walking blah blah blah I am freaked out and hope they can come with something and make what I have like I used to be. I guess power is knowledge I am grateful everyday for a lot of things. But I'm not sure if this is permanent or not yet, I hope not. Thank you for all of your comments I don't feel alone

They finally put me in therapy and I am beyond grateful for what I'm learning! I never knew the term “Ataxia” before my physical therapist. I even said “tremors” to my doctor and he just said “that’s not what they are” but he never explained it. There really should be more female doctors.
Anyway, now I am home watching UA-cam videos how I can exercise to help improve it! Very cool.

Ataxia#. I have seen 4 Neurologists and take every test known to medicine(that was the quote from the last Doctor) but he said "what you have will not get better but will probably get worse maybe PT will help" but wont diagnose as Ataxia. only Ataxia Doctor here in Metro Atlanta gave apt for July 2023. I can't walk with out staggering, stairs I must have helper. This has been coming on since my Extensive Spine Surgery. I have been a professional Ballet Dancer and and Gymnast ( came to late to that game). I have to get this out to someone who UNDERSTANDS. I have started doing your exercises for several issues. The Balance Corner is really hard for me right now. I can't tell you how happy I am to find you.....I'm a fit and determined to lady of a tiny 83. Bless You.

Thank you! I am 80, and had a TBI (two, actually, within 2 weeks of each other)and am working on balance, strength, and posture. I "graduated " from Home Health last month and am going to a PT at an office now. Standing in a corner with feet just wide enough not to fall was my first exercise, and then I got to the point where I could stand with feet touching each other. I am glad to be reminded--still need to do it. I also started going to a chiropractor and an acupuncturist.

Thank you thank you thank you for this video! I learned more about myself in this 15 min video than I have from any other source. You just explained my entire life. I was dx’d by a geneticist last year at age 51. Both my teen girls have it as well, but both suffer much more than I did at their age. It breaks my mama heart. I wish more docs were knowledgeable about EDS!! I’ve been accused of making things up my entire life by both family and doctors (dx as either “conversion disorder”, or just flat out lying). So, truly, thank you for believing us, educating us and educating other providers!!!

I got cerebral Ataxia from a Covid-19 infection - I think at the time my immune system was a bit weaker than it should have been and so the virus moved in for a few days and decided to move the furniture around...
It's frustrating thinking and feeling normal and trying to speak to a friend and everything comes to a halt. I have disarthria too so even though I feel like I always did - my brain lost its ability to enunciate my words. Hard to explain since I always took these things for granted so didn't really think about them a whole lot. Now everything's changed I realise just how much effort goes into interacting with the world.
I seem to plan my outing in my head and might actually leave the house two hours later - but if anything unplanned or unexpected suddenly happens it's like my brain has to reboot and I stop dead in my tracks until my heads back online and figuring out what to do next. I don't feel disabled really - it's annoying but I feel like I always did - just interact with the world like I always did. But I'm far from suffering. Could be far worse.

I am glad with your comment. I have (self diagnosis) ataxia symptoms since the cov infection and or spritz. At first my foot started to turn inwards while walking, then balance problems occurred. Then my pelvis became unstable with very painful muscle contractions. And with a right leg paralysis. I still cannot lift my leg high enough to walk up the stairs. after almost 3 years .Now weakness is getting worse. But have less pain. I found out that food is also a big player in the whole situation. Carbohydrates/grains result in swelling the upper legs en painful knees and hips. Besides cutting carbohydrates I also do prolonged fasting, like 48- 62 hours, to bring some peace and relaxation into my body and hopefully help with muscle healing through autophagy. I went to a PT for months but her practice only made the pain far worse. I hope that adding these dedicated ataxia exercises will bring somewhat more stability and strength back. 😊

Thank God that with therapy I resumed walking and piano playing, sewing, etc. then in 2018 I had another stroke which weakened the right side and damaged my vocal cords. Thanks God that Malformation was removed back in December 2019 and we are back to training. Based on what you mention in this video and now I remember some of the therapists lingo that of course I didn't know what they were saying and have to asked them again and again it looks that it is a matter of time...and training. I can see now why the Dr. In Physical Medicine and the Neurologist are so positive when they both told me it will be fine as soon all that area gets healed... Thank you, God Bless you.

I also had a massive stroke one year now. I had the exact symptoms as your brother had. I am a nurse by profession. I still go to therapy twice a week. We don’t have neuro therapist close by. I found Dr Tobias’channel and I’ve been following her videos. She’s helped me with my recovery. I was able to go up and down the stairs with my husband’s assistance. It was difficult but the more he practice the more confident he becomes. I also lost my speech and right side paralysis. I wish him well.

I have been diagnosed with Ataxia based on the shaky and jerky movements of my left arm. My left side suffers from hemiparesis due to a hemorrhagic stroke suffered in September 2023. My left leg doesn’t seem to be affected. I really appreciate you addressing this as there is little information out there about how to treat it including from my medical and therapy team. That is frustrating as it has greatly impacted my recovery and day to day living. My left arm knocks things over when I’m trying to prepare meals or keeps me from tying a shoelace, carrying anything etc. #ataxia.

9:45 9:45 9:45 9:45 Edward in Santa Monica California, thank you.... I've had two strokes in 4 years the first one I walked out of the ER in less than a week. The second one was two and a half years ago and very difficult. I thought it was in the back of the skull area of the brain. I have watched your videos of not to try to help me rehab myself because rehab has been very short-lived in my situation. One thing I have learned from having two strokes at 51 is you must try really hard it's a force of will to make the brain rewire itself and create new neural connections. I regained a lot of myself back of the first time the second time has been really challenging thankfully I haven't had a stroke again but now I know to call this balance issue. I've always had a hard time putting my shirt with both strokes I've had to retrain myself how to hand write the first time and did it pretty quickly within less than a year, I was running after the first one forcing myself to Chase my daughter. This is not so easy the second time around but to all you guys out there who have had similar issues. You must persist and force yourself to do things that you think you can't. I have severe balances issues. I thought I had gotten over but they seem to reappear after a bout with covid. 4 months ago. But now I'm trying to play guitar again which I have been playing for decades. I was completely paralyzed on the right side from head to toe I couldn't move my arm or bend my finger... Cook clean..... etc.
I have been watching your videos for two and a half years and I thank you very very very very very very much they have been extremely helpful. Sometimes the health system fails us, and I had only about 1 and a half months of rehab.

#ataxia Thank You! I have been trying to get community physio help with this for almost a year. Does anyone else have episodic ataxia as a result of a Covid infection? Mine comes and goes. Sometimes I can walk normally for a short time and then it becomes ataxic or it just happens when I get up in the morning or after sitting down for a while. I had M.E. With very slight ataxic gait before that. I also have slurred speech.

    • @lauragott2122

Hello jojo! Yes, my ataxia is also intermittent. I am gluten intolerant and research says that gluten in all grains can cause neuro damage in those genetically susceptible. Check out Dr. Peter Osborne on You Tube. I also notice that my walking will be worse when I get fatigued. It is always mostly normal in the mornings. I too believe I have ME/CFS, as my brain feels inflamed often. I get migraine headaches with or without the inflammation feeling. The reason I am mentioning this is becuz I firmly believe that the latent Epstein-Barre virus, like Covid, is the main trigger for the inflammation that caused antibodies to attack my nerves. Working with GF/DF diet, supplements and now hoping these excercises will be helpful. Going to start on them ASAP! Hope you all benefit from them as well. Our brains are so important to health, must commit to protocols with determination for perseverance. Take care and Best wishes for your success!

Dear Dr. Tara, many thanks again for a super video. I was fine with balance until 1 yr post stroke, getting foggy brain days with constant furniture walking. It turned out to be a lack of the E and D vitamins, which seem to deplete rapidly in healing processes. That was easy to fix.
Not so easy to fix are balance problems when the foot rolls and cramps in the middle of the walking due to stress from noise and fright to fall.
That is why I love your standing exercises in many of your videos. It is always back to square one, standing, recollecting strength and balance and then slowly moving on.
So lots of greetings and thank yous from Germany again.
