2012 Golf Wipers 00153 trouble code

- This Golf was the subject of a previous video, and the customer called back with a "wasn't like that before" complaint. Although the fix isn't very interesting there is some good info regarding the way the wiper system works. It had a 00153 trouble code in the central electronic system for no communication with the wiper control module.

I shared an small but significant oversight on my part, (stupid me!) at the end that could be a huge time waster if you don't know what keeps the wipers from working. I probably would not have made a video on this except for that one detail worth sharing.

@CoolAirVw thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you I can't say it enough yesterday I was stupid and didn't clear my whole window of snow and turned my wipers on I was stupid and didn't check the fuse until it was to late I broke the bushing on the wiper and put a new motor and linkage in I was about to give up cause I'm getting power but nothing needless to say the hood wasn't closed so it cost me $100 for being a idiot and not first checking the fuse but it's working now thanks to this video
Thank you so much for posting the video. I'd been scratching my head all day after running into a similar scenario and wondering if there was an intermittent fault with the wipers on a golf. I now know better. Good on ya.

Absolutely awesome mate!! I’ve been diagnosing Audi A1 for long time , after I have found the fuse unplugged and relay stuck closed, then I have checked your video and shut the bonnet and finally start works 😂😂😂. Fu..n bonnet switch!!
Ya, this was kind of a silly video. No real diagnosing at all, but I felt like I needed to post it. Lots of folks said what you said in the comments. They fixed this and that and it still didn't work till they watched the video and then shut the hood! Thanks so much for watching !

Not much info here other than its unplugged an I'm stupid and left the hood open!
@@CoolAirVw I scanned the codes before I checked the plug. It was showing a communication fault. I've had a lot of wiring issues with this car so I assumed it was a broken wire. This video reminded to get back to basic troubleshooting. I also expected that the wiper motor would be way more difficult to get to until I watched the video.

This is why I made this video even though I felt stupid. Twice in the last month I've helped people by telling them shut the hood. These two people thought I was genius but I will go down in history as the man who can shut the hood.
Whenever I find myself in a situation like that (obvious disconnect of a components)... I end up looking for hidden cameras! Nice of them to have given you a tip. That hood switch got me once before as well! D'oh!
I would just show them where the plug is, explain that there's no way you could have accessed it, then give them the car at no charge. That way they won't tell their friends that you knocked their plug off. You can be polite and kind with them and leave them feeling good easily enough.

Hi guys.i had the same issue twice .wipers just got stuck upright.it wasn't the fuses.basically its the lome thats gets hooked on the wiper mechanism dragging and pulling it out.if the cable is not put in the right place it will gradually unplug itself cos of the arm movement.sometimes its the simple things we overlook, good diagnostic video also keep the hoof closed wen testing.Thanks

🤦 duh, my hood was open. I was freaking out after cleaning out my sunroof drains. I put the wipers back on, went to test them, nothing. Watched this video. 15 mins in, bam.

mechanics generally use Mitchell (pro-demand), All-data, and Identifix as tech services for that type of info. I pay about $180- per month for access to tech info like that.

10:05 to my surprise, even skilled car mechanics didn't know that closed hood trick, feeling relief now as I ran into the same problem wondering why whipers didn't work. Luckely I just closed hood and problem solved itself, only later I realized it's the safety future. If you think about it, indeed why you would need working windshield wipers when the hood is open and someone is working around that area, creating safety risks and the wipers are damn strong when working. Recently I had a problem with one side seized wiper arm mechanism like it was even imposible to rotate the arm when it was taken out yet wiper motor did manage to move the arm, slowly and not always, but it did. You don't want anything to stand between that force, let it be your working tools, your hands or anything else while working at the engine.

OMFG!!! Unseized the wiper transmission and then went to make sure the wipers were parked and they wouldn't work!! I did everything the exact same but did not realize there was a hood switch!!!! Great video, especially since I was about to torch the car!!! Lmfao

I feel so foolish, if the trunk lid is not closed,there is no voltage for the back up,reverse lights. After closing the hood the wipers worked. So I tought: what if the same thing applies to the trunk? and it did,now the back up lights work

I’ve had the same issue as many others but still no resolve really hoped shutting the hood would work but it didn’t. I put a new motor in and it worked for a second but then once I reassembled it all together it did not work and now I have no power going to the plug. I can’t find a bad fuse and I can still hear the relay clicking when I use the wiper switch

make sure the hood is closed and that the hood switch works.

Same thing happened to mine yesterday, got back from dealer and wipers don't work
plug it in, plug it in. (advertising jingle for glade plug ins)
@@CoolAirVw yeah so...went to the dealer, they opened the fuse box and there is the fuse just laying in the box not "plugged in"!

2012? check power, check ground, check for communication. Is your steering wheel control module communicating? Do you have a scan tool tha tcan get data groups out of it?
I have a problem with my 2010 vw golf my turnsignal my wipers my horn and my cruise control all went out my fuses are all good any idea what it could be
everything on the car is computerized. Scan for trouble codes. There is a steering wheel control module. Everything on the steering wheel inputs to that computer. Start with scanning that computer for trouble codes. there is a chance there is no power or possibly no ground to that computer.

Do you know if the wipers need calibrating after replacement of motors? I've changed the motors and there's a knocking noise now and won't work in harmony together?
You need to take the arms off. Turn the wipers on, then off (hood closed during this), and let the motor "park". Then install the arms in the park position.
@@CoolAirVw Thank you for the response. I have tried this and didn't work. It seems the N/S is the master motor as the O/S will not work without it so I have tried just using the N/S motor and it won't go into park position. There is also a knocking from that motor even though new.
When both motors are connected and trying to get park position they are not synchronised at all. What else could be the issue?
@@0121Shotz both motors? Sorry I assumed you had a system similar to the car in this video.
@@CoolAirVw Its a 2006 Seat Leon which should be the same set up. The N/S is the master motor as it can work on its own but it still won't go into park position. With Both motors connected they seem way off synchronised and seems to cause a knocking noise from the N/S motor?
When looking at the N/S motor after the noise the mechanism seems maxed to the right side. Would this mean something inside the motor is now slipping? It's new and does move so I can't personally see that being an issue

Believe it or not, but I was shouting "close the hood" right after you plugged the connector in and went to check it.
Regarding belt squeak on the car in the background - tried spraying water on it? Does it stop? Once I had an issue with squeaky serpentine belt on startup. Everything was fine but it turned out to be belt itself. Replaced the belt, no more squeaks on startup.
Alt pulley one way clutch seized up so tensioner clatters a bunch and makes the belt squeal a bit.
I have this problem with tiguan 2014, front wiper will not work even with the hood closed and vcds saying it is closed, any tips

Hello man! I have Golf 2010y. I have got same error 00153. When the motor is disconnected on VCDS is CLOSE when is connected again "Close" What will be a problem? Wiring? Thanks man.

Maybe the hood switch is defective. Check that it is changing state when hood is closed vs. open. You can probably do this with vagcom.
How stupid a man should be not to know such a banal thing !!! And who even removed the connection on the electric motor without mentioning it to the mechanic.

Customer thinks we unplugged it. We think it randomly became unplugged, meaning it wasn't completely latched to start with.

If anyone has any advice.....I have a 2012 Jetta wagon, which is essentially a Golf. The Jetta sedan is a Jetta. The Jetta wagon appears to be a Golf. My wipers don't work. All fuses are good. Already changed the wiper motor and mechanism. The hood is closed, and the car knows it's closed, which means the latch switch is good. All other doors are closed. The washer pump comes on and sprays fine, but the wipers don't move at all, ever. I hope someone has experienced this and knows what to try. I bought a 377 relay but it's not in the relay panel by the steering column like in the Jetta. If anyone knows where that 377 relay is in my car (if it has one) then that would be great. Thanks so much in advance!!
at this point you would need to find a wire schematic for the car and test the wires individually at the wiper for power and ground and an oscilloscope for the communication wires. Of course I assume you checked fuses right?

Damn, I thought it would be easy fix after watching this.. came down to the garage but.. fuse is okay, switched between wipers and horn, horn still working after replacing them so it's not the fuse. Wiper motor is plugged, hood is closed and still code 00153 is on and wipers are not working. Guess I need to check wires and if this will not help, buy new wiper motor.
Had a customer call me yesterday, (big ice storm here of course). wipers didn't work. I had them open the hood and re-shut it and wipers started working. I hope your able to get it sorted out.
