My favorite tip is to cut handles into boxes, especially large or heavy ones. It makes the so much easier to carry!
yes that's a good one!
And just a suggestion, run a strip of duct tape (from the dollar store) right above the top of the handle (on both the inside and outside) to give the self-made "handle" extra support.
I just cut handles in a large, rather unwieldy box about an hour ago.
Makes it MUCH easier to handle...."handle" LOL😄
The only tipp I do not support is the random boxes tipp, because it is a lot easier to pack a u-haul when all of your boxes are one shape and sice, and I found out that actuall moving boxes are way more easier to carry cause they have a different shape and handels, but maybe that is special to germany and does not apply for the US. But when you do not move a long distance and you take a lot off trips with your own car then it does not matter
Another important tip....Dedicate one small box that you leave at the door or Kitchen that is for nothing but those really important items you will be lost if you lose. Like remote controls, chargers, extra keys, eye glasses, etc. And only one person is in charge of bring said box to the new house and deposit it in the kitchen!
This is actually one of the most practical YT videos on moving that I've seen. Thank you!
I always use my wash & dish clothes and towels to wrap my breakable kitchen items. We are moving next year, and any recent purchases that we have made I kept the boxes so I could put them back in for the move. I have a $600 Kitchen Aid mixer (we bake tons for the holidays), I only pray I kept that box, I have this terrible feeling I threw it away a few years ago, trying to find a hefty box to put it in is going to be hard. ahhhh
My goodness, you are a genius. Purge should always be the first tip and so far you are the only who listed this tip first. Kudos to you. Who wants to take trash to the new place. It's simple, but it needs to be said if we are listing tips. Thank you.
also keep valuables in your car, don't let movers pack them, and keep a list of phone numbers with you, power co, water, cable anything you need to have turned on or problems with
Bookstores are wonderful for sturdy clean boxes. I don't recommend grocery store fruit boxes as they can host insects. Trust me - the giant cockroach story is still strong in my mind! I love those labels you found. Smart tip with the tape. I never thought of that!
This is not a packing tip but thought I might share this free 'tool' you can use to easily hold your place on a roll of tape. Save those plastic tabs (used to close a bag of a loaf of bread, rolls or buns) and stick it under the edge of the tape and you will never have to fuss with finding it again!
Nancy Nomura Good idea! I use a paper clip with the 1st ‘turn’ straightened out
Thank you!
I usually try to fold under the cut edge of the tape, but that's a bother. I will definitely try the plastic tab idea.
The tip about folding over the edge of packing tape when taping a box to allow for easy removal is worth the price of admission for this video. Good tip!
Scrunched up plastic grocery bags are also awesome for packing fragile things. I stuff them in and around dishes/fill gaps in boxes to keep things from shifting.
Great tips! We used so many of these tips on our many moves, (We get relocated a lot through hubby's job). Another thing we found helpful was to pack a bin with things you may need right away. Things like toilet paper, paper towel, small amount of paper plates, bowls, coffee mugs, coffee, and maybe quick grab snack/breakfast items. Oh and maybe a toiletry bag. We've had a few cross country moves where we got in quite late, and having those items quickly available saved us from having to unpack boxes in the middle of the night.
Yes great ideas, we plan to do that for sure :)
Great idea!
The top moving tip I can give you is to get a babysitter! I cannot begin to tell you how much stress that will take away. Not worrying about baby getting stepped on or hurt or putting something in their mouth. Excited, tired, and stressed children as you probably know from experience can also be very irritable. Enjoy your new home and be blessed.
Good one!
Instead of taking drawers out and using so much plastic wrap, which will ultimately go into the ocean or a landfill, you can just tape the drawers to the dresser! Just a tip for anyone trying to cut back on waste.
these are some awesome tips I wish I would have known them before I moved, you can also get free boxes from your local hospital they keep a bin with nothing but boxes in the back of the hospital free for the taking. congratulations on your new house can't wait to see it and all the great organizations you're going to do
My daughter just moved into a new house. A friend gave her boxes from his workplace. I used her towels, place mats, and tablecloths to protect fragile items. She didn't purge well and admitted to me that she should have gotten rid of more stuff.
I like the tip about folding the tape over! Thanks for sharing :)
5 years later still useful ☺️👌
If you move a lot then buy plastic totes once so you do not have to keep getting cardboard boxes
Love the bag for packing necessities.👍
✅ I use a large shoe box or a rectangular basket with handle to keep my packing stuffs - masking tapes, clear plastic wrap, scissors, pen knife, sharpies, bubble wraps.
✅ If your boxes comes in 3 different sizes Large, Medium, Small, do MARK on the side of the box according to the size eg S1, M1, L1
✅ For ODD size box, MARK as ODD#1
✅ Pack all the long stuffs such as broomsticks, mopsticks, umbrellas, poles, (anything long) into a long rectangular box and seal the box with clear plastic wrap.
✅ Pack pillows, blankets, soft items into the washing machine and seal wrap.
✅ Do not throw away those old pillows/cushions/single foldable mattress! You may cut out the sponge from these old mattress and use as cushioning for packing your fragile stuffs, after which you can discard them.
✅ If you have electric stand fans or desk fans, remember to remove the fan covers and blades and pack them separately inside a box.
✅ If you are able to DISMANTLE shelving cabinets, please DO SO as it SAVES space! Remember to tape up the screws onto the shelves so you won't lose them and then seal wrap together with the shelves.
That's all for now. I hope this helps too! 😊
I agree to purge before moving & I have the #1 tip that helped us when we recently moved after 10 years. I labeled the boxes where I wanted all our friends/helpers to put them. So I nesc didnt want all the decor or kitch boxes in living room or kitch perhaps I wanted them all stacked in office or garage. It really made it all so easy. THEN I used blue painters tape on all the doors to say what room that was so they wld know as its a new empty home & I wouldnt have to say allday "oh that goes in there, etc etc" This worked so well. I too, used socks to wrap breakables! A $9.99 tape gun from Walmrt was well worth the investmnt. My last tips was Sub sandwiches on moving day was easy n fed all the strong wonderful help we had. GL 😉
GretchGerty no oh
This is very true, the key for stress free move is to start early. This is such an amazing video. Keep posting more.
When getting free boxes, avoid any that carried produce as insect eggs are very likely. I buy new boxes for moving because the risk is significantly lower. They are really cheap, and the reduced risk is worth it for me.
Great Label ideas! I have been packing for a month now and I am down to the critical areas, kitchen, bedrooms, etc. Thank you for your great ideas!
So true! We always get boxes for free at grocery stores and when we did our out of state move we started months early, knowing it was going to happen. We also had 2 garage sales and sold a LOT on Craigslist. Purged 80% of all we owned. We rented a uhaul, packed it to the ceiling making sure to use every inch. Drove it the 18 hours and parked in the new driveway. It was so much less money then if we had movers and less stress. Love the tips!!
Awesome!
Thank you for you kindness also your ideas THEYLL truly help .God Bless you .
I feel much better when mortgage papers, deeds, etc are kept in a fireproof lock box. I'd never trust them to be in a plastic or paper folder. Love your other ideas though. 💞💐
I love the $.50 blue IKEA bags fir moving. They hold a ton of stuff and are so sturdy. Plus afterwards we use them for all kind of stuff like yard sale "bins" for kids clothes to getting firewood in the backyard.
Very true. I should dig those out of my trunk..
where do you get the ikea bags ? I'm in florida
Great tips! My mom is about to move so I'll share this with her. Great idea about the meal prep too 👍🏻
OMG! is this really Dr Dray? I can't believe my eyes!
What a gold mine of awesome moving tips! I feel so much more confident moving into my first apartment now! Thank you girl!
Honestly, your video was great. The voice overs and examples were the best. Thanks
Thank you!
Another tip ... If you're a Costco/Sam's member & know you're moving soon, say YES to their boxes. They are the best!
Good one!
when I moved from Texas to Ohio....we washed the laundry and towels.....used it as buffer for the dishes and plates. turned out to be a good thing... I moving guys dropped it a few times .... kicked and pushed it cuz heavy and they had no muscles, was lazy, malicious, or a combination thereof. unpacked.... nothing broken.... not even. the stemware.
That's why you get companies that do background checks because they are more likely to weed out horrible workers more often
They kicked & pushed your packed boxes in front of you? 😒
Gee, kids these days., in Australia they can't keep young guys as movers, so they hire older men who know what hard work is. TRUE!
@@kevinbrislawn5918 I know, in the future it will be nearly impossible to find people to do heavy repetitive labor: unless, we as a society, are willing to pay decent wage for a laborer.
Another tip take your curtains down and wash them so they are ready to hang 😫
Susan Velez that's a great tip! Something I've never done before moving!
YES! That is how I do it this way when you get there just one less thing to do.
This is the best moving tips I've viewed so far and i have seen quite a lot. the wardrobe black liner is so good!! Thank you xx
Happy you enjoyed!
Thanks for this one! Folding over the edge of the packing tape- why have I never thought of this?!
Seriously such helpful tips. I like the nonempty bag idea and using socks to wrap stuff. Wrapping the drawers is timesaver. I know you purged lots but I m sure you toss some more once you unpack. Tfs hope u have a nice moving day
When I moved 6 years ago Shoprite held boxes for me. We are closing in 2 weeks and my sister closed a month ago and she gave me her boxes and my husband is an electrician and he brought home electrical boxes. Also dollar tree does sell sharpies.
With my husband being in the military we move a lot and I'm constantly going threw our stuff and throwing things out. I'm scared we will go over our weight limit and two I hate keeping stuff we don't have any need for. Your videos are motivating me to start packing for our upcoming move in March
THANK YOU HILLARY!!! We just bought our first house and these tips are going to be a huge help!
These tips are absolutely brilliant, Hilary! Bar none, the best moving tips I've ever heard!! Thank you so, so much for them. Lots of luck in the upcoming weeks in your move! We're all so excited and happy for you.💕Kate
Thanks Kate!

That's truly her personality all the time!
Wall pictures- set flat glass up, place a towel down and another picture on top glass up. Repeat until the stack is uncomfortable to pick up. Wrap with that same plastic wrap which will allow you to move an entire stack with ease vs one picture at a time.
The box jackpot for my has always been the recycling bin behind clothing stores like old navy.
yes!
We moved five times in the first three years of marriage. You learn tips for fast moving! We used many of yours. I'm thankful I'm in my home for awhile...but you purge less when you don't move often, so you're give me the bug to get on it! I can't wait to see the new house!!!!
When we moved at the end of August/beginning of September I packed my clothes the same way you suggest, leaving them on the hangers and putting them in a big garbage bag. I also used some of my towels and wash clothes as cushioning between breakables that I knew I would be unpacking right away like dishes.
Yes, another great tip! I've been using towels and baby blankets for my fragile home decor :)
Oh wow I’ve never heard the plastic wrap one! What a good idea!!!
hey great tips you seem very organised and relaxed!!! Lara always makes me smile.♡
This is so awesome! Those freezer meals are also good for those few days right before you move, and your kitchen is already packed up 👍🏻❤️
Yeah!
having moved many times great tips. I never buy boxes. uhaul also has a box exchange you can check out. I also use towels for wrapping things. another thing you don't have to pack separately.
The packing caddy is the best tip!
20 seconds in and I’ve already hit the subscribe button. Love your ruthless attitude towards throwing everything out because that’s how I am!
Mikayla happy to have you! Gotta be ruthless when moving, you'll never miss those pieces you tossed 💪🏼
I absolutely LOVE throwing things away, it's so freeing 😁
So happy for you guys and can't wait to see your new home, I have no doubt it's going to be truly beautiful!

You can also wrap cutlery organizer in kitchen using surround warp before moving it..
yes!
I love your moving hack it’s amazing
Get free boxes from the liquor store. They have spacers in the boxes that you can put your wine glasses between
LOVE THESE TIPS Girl! You are so right about PURGING! People think that I don't need to purge! YES!!! We all do...sheesh! I have a family and we accumulate even when we are intentional about what we bring in! YES, boxes are a waste to buy! It pays to ask around! Thanks so much!!! xoxo
It looks like you have everything under control. Can't wait to see the new house. Just love your videos.
OMG our house is built now the stress of moving : (. You have gave me so much good advice. Cutting handles into boxes what an idea. OMG I use to take all the cloths off hangers and folded them up in a box the garbage bag over hanging cloths is going to be so much better. Thank you so much. 💞
Great tips! we are moving from CT to FL in five months. Part of our things are there already, but a little more leftovers to go- I will just take what is absolutely needed. Your tips are very helpful :-)
quality over quantity. awesome tips loved this video.
Love it, great tips. Will use these in 5 months. Eeek! So excited for you. I have been purging, purging, and still purging. Gonna start selling some stuff soon to. Tfs
Very helpful. I am decluttering in a major way. I'm not moving yet but I'll be better prepared. Thank you for all of your tips.
Smart!
So many great tips. We've moved a few times and It is definitely helpful when your organized while packing. It makes things so much easier. ☺️
I can relate to your excitement about setting up a new place. We are moving across the street in about a month! Thanks for the tips.
Fun!
One of the best 'moving tips' vids I have seen.
Thank you so much for this video! I’m moving from Ohio to Florida and I’m about to lose my mind!😩
Big move, but you can do this 💛
appreciate these tips!!! moving out for the first time with 3 children
Thanks for the tips! Moving in 6 days very excited! Seeing your videos for the first time definitely going to check out more
Great tips ! You explained thoroughly and quickly. I pretty much am doing the same things but the shrink wrap or Saran wrap... that was a very good idea and I only have one week left so that's what I'm going to be doing all day today 😉 Thank you and by the way... hope you guys are very happy in your new house!
The best place to get boxes are Starbucks and liquor stores!
Really great tips - especially socks. Thanks so much!
Great tips. Thanks. I'm moving long distance middle of February. Can't wait to see your unpacking/getting settled tips.
01:08 I have found the Community Hospital to be excellent resource for boxes. They are extra heavy duty and solid (not crushed nor ripped). The sizes one can find are various, and can find boxes that you can " nest" in one another i.e. extra protection for fragile items. Many of the boxes have extra packing paper, bubble wrap, ballon wrap, foam, etc as a bonus. Plus, nearly all boxes and materials are super clean as the boxes just came out of the hospital! So make friends with the Eviromental Services Crew, as it saves them labor by less boxes that they need to breakdown. And , by reusing these boxes, you keep out less for landfill, and after move can recycle ♻️ with your government collection authority or one can reuse these sturdy boxes at home.
Use double walled boxes!
I love your ideas. I never thought about wrapping things that are already in place👍
Please do a video on your eye makeup! Love the color. It looks amazing!!!
I can't wait to see the new house and all the videos coming. 😁 super excited
Awesome packing tips! LOVE your videos. Can't wait to see your new house!
Great ideas! I am going to hit up the liquor store for boxes!
This is a great video. I love the tape to cover the drawers. Amazing.
Thanks!
loved all the tips thanks for sharing I hope to be using them sometime his year
Good tip with the shrink wrap
Happy to help
Genius on the tape trick and make ahead meals!
No more plastic wrap!! Unless you never throw it away and reuse it otherwise that stuff gets into our oceans :(
Not if you dispose of it correctly
@@HHHPedigrees nah it still goes in the Oceans unfortunately. Plastic wrap is not recyclable almost everywhere - this means your "correct" disposal method is trash. Once it reaches end destination for trash (a big pile) it breaks down in uv light and literally blows away in the wind. The tiny pieces can be found in almost all living things. They act like sponges to absorb toxins in the environment, and are eaten or absorbed by life. The life that eats them are usually eaten themselves at some point, and the toxins bio magnify upward through the tropic levels.
In my town the unsorted plastic etc in trash gets burnt and turned into energy. But yeah it’s still a good idea to avoid single use plastic whenever it’s feasible.
So then what do you propose to hold blankets onto the furniture?
@@herracaligari won't burning plastic release harmful substances into the atmosphere? Doesn't sound like the best idea to me.
Wonderful tips Hillary ! Thank you.
these were awesome and helpful tips thank you so much☺ congratulations on your home!
Love the liquor store box tip
Thank you and the baby is adorable❤❤❤❤
Such great and useful tips.
Loved the 'wrapping' idea. Will definitely have to remember that one when moving next.
Good luck with the move, and can't wait to see your new place : )
Thanks for the tips. Congrats on your new house.
I had no luck with getting free boxes. I did find that it was cheaper to buy them on line and not at the u haul store. Every time I contacted someone on craigslist the boxes were gone. I was also on a time constraint so I couldn't take my time and wait for stuff to become available.
Thanks I am using this information NOW!!!
Great ideas. Can't wait to see the house.
