    Holy shit. I've had this camera sitting on my shelf for 3-4 years, and I thought it was broken. It worked!
    Update: I've since dropped and broken the camera halfway through my first roll. I guess it was never meant to be used.

    I discovered this back in 1994 when I decided to take photography class in high school and needed a camera. Knowing my parents had an XG9 in their closet they claimed was broke, I changed the batteries and ta-da it worked. I then went on to use that camera for years, even winning a couple photo awards with it. I kind of miss that camera. At some point it got a light leak and I decided to take it apart to check out how it worked. I believe I still have the pentaprism somewhere as a keepsake.
    Sadly my folks had bought the camera the year I was born but only used it for a handful of years before the batteries died and they thought it was broke. So I have a couple of really good photos from when I was a kid with shallow DOF and then the rest after that were all point and shoot camera photos. Kind of wonder what kind of photos they would have gotten had they knew to change the batteries.
    I actually ended up with friend's old XG1 several years ago. And a couple bad Focal lenses. I haven't used it but it looks in decent shape. It does need some batteries. Maybe I should pick up a Rokkor lens and some batteries for it. It's just hard to spend the money on that kind of thing these days when I've got a perfectly good Nikon FE with a few lens already if I want to shoot film.

    Thank you for your time & effort. I have a Minolta XG-M and have just run through my first film a Fuji 400 colour film. I am trying to rewind it. It seems I just need to hit the rewind button underneath. Beautiful camera! I love the feel and motion and viewfinder. It is telling me that inside a normally lit room with front light on the subject at 50mm f1.7 it needs 1/30th of a second...? But I am thinking that it is trying to render 'mid grey' as if it was a sunny day. It seems to compensate for the speed of the film...
    I really need f8 because I have multiple subjects at which it says I need 1/4 second which is not possible hand held... so I compensated for the fact that I am inside by dropping the stop compensation down 2 full stops at which point it allowed me to shoot at 1/30th to 1/60th of a second... am I thinking right or do I need a flash unit hand held?

    I have a question, i recently got an x700 and i got new batteries for it and I was able to shoot a whole roll of film no problem but then all of a sudden it stopped working and all it did was flash the the letters in the view finder for like a sec then then stop. I bought new batteries for it twice now but i notice that the battery end cap had a brown stain or something on the metal plate in there, i was wondering if that just meant that the current wouldn't flow anymore and the cap doesn't work anymore or if it's the camera itself?

    Same thing occurred with a used OM-2N I bought at a thrift store, I wanted the lens(A pristine 50mm macro) and told them the camera was broken because I didn't know better. I decided to futz with the camera and soon found out it needed batteries to operate, the OLY's have reset buttons as well, but it ended up being the nicest old Olympus body I have.

    Thank you for the video Bill! It helped me fix my XG7 but I've discovered a different issue and wondering if you have come across it. My camera appears to be "stuck" at the x-sync flash speed, which I think is 1/60. Previously it was stuck at a five or six second shutter. After attaching an x-series flash, the camera shifted to x-sync speed so it's functional, albeit in a limited state. The mechanics are all working flawlessly. Any thoughts on this issue?

    • @BillRogersCamera
      @BillRogersCamera  3 роки тому +1

      Check that the battery compartment cover is clean, use a fiberglass brush or a pencil eraser. You could have a mechanical issue with the shutter. If the mirror is locked up, the issue may be that the shutter has not completed its travel to release the mirror. If the mirror is down, you may have an electrical issue, would recommend taking the camera to a service center.

    • @BillRogersCamera
      @BillRogersCamera  4 роки тому

      Hi, the advance lever cocks the shutter and advances film. So yes, they are related. Either LR44G and SR44 batteries should work. Just make sure they are oriented properly and no corrosion on the battery cap. If all checks OK then you have another problem. Not uncommon to have capacitor issues with the Minolta X series.

      @BillRogersCamera  4 роки тому

      Hi, the Hi Matic 11 will operate without a battery (although will not meter or expose properly) as it is a mechanical shutter so if you are having an issue with the advance being stuck, you have a mechanical problem with the camera.

    Hi I purchased new batteries and replaced them but my battery check light doesn’t come on? Do you know why that would be? Thank you

    • @BillRogersCamera
      @BillRogersCamera  3 роки тому

      Carefully check that the battery cover is free from corrosion. It may not be visible, but a thin film of corrosion can prevent the batteries from powering the camera. Clean it with a fiberglass brush or perhaps a pencil eraser.

    Hey guys, Would you by any chance have a spare film Advance Lever cap available for a Minolta CLE?

    Does this work on the Konica autoreflex t3? My film advance lever is stuck too.

      Unfortunately that isn’t related to a simple battery change. The T3 shutter is mechanical.

    What about if my lever won’t wind the part that rolls the film in? I’m new to film photography and I got a XG-A and I’ve shot a couple rolls already but my little brother was messing with it and now the lever won’t rotate the cylinder that rolls the film in, anyone have any tips or advice I’m desperate 😭😭

    Just as importantly, make sure the camera isn't in Auto mode. You can't turn the advance lever otherwise when the back is open.

    Does someone know what the problem is?
    It’s just sometimes and sometimes the shutter speed is off.
    Like I said it is sporadically.
    Hope somebody can halo me out

      Same problem with my XG7. Apparently it is likely in need of a new capacitor. The Minolta XGs have a lot of issues with this.

    If this didn't fix it, I read that it's a resistor failure. How hard is that issue to deal with?
