According to the Minolta manual on page 5 the "A" on the XG-M (X-70 in Japan) means Automatic (not Aperture). Automatic mode is also aperture priority and the camera will automatically determine the correct shutter speed for whatever aperture setting you select. However, if the light meter determines a shutter speed shorter than 1/1000 sec. or longer than 1 sec. the shutter will NOT release in A mode. In Manual mode (any shutter speed other than A) the camera shutter will fire for any shutter/aperture combination you select.
Thanks for your video! I've just inherited my grandfathers and I'm excited to try B&W photography with it - have you got any tips? film speeds/brands? settings to be aware of?
Mines powers on however, when I press my shutter it doesn't work. Sometimes it works, sometimes nothing happens. I'm I doing something wrong? Is something wrong. Some help would be great.
If the camera is in A - which means Automatic (not Aperture) - the shutter will NOT fire if the needed shutter speed (determined by the computer) is shorter than 1/1000 sec. or longer than 1 sec. For example if you leave the cap on the lens in A it will not fire. Or if you point it at a very strong light source the shutter speed may be less than 1/1000 and it will not fire. However, if you shoot in Manual mode (anything other than A) the shutter should always release for any aperture/shutter speed combination (as long as the camera is turned to ON).
Thanks again. The XG M was the last in the XG range of cameras that Minolta made. I have it's predecessor, the XG 9 with a few Rokkor lenses

How have you been getting on with it?
Great explanation of the aperture priority
Thanks for watching!

Could be a capacitor issue, lots of information on line. Good luck!
@@beforedigital Thanks really appreciate it.

This was super helpful, thank you
what is the name of the battery I should get for this camera?
Use 2 x LR44 button batteries.
Very helpful, Thank you
Minolta, a very underrated camera, I love mine save for that 2CR5 battery in the AF versions.
Completely agree
