yes! and actually We're an American Band is my least favorite-- that's after they became "top 40 AM". Heartbreaker is great and Closer to my Home(I'm Your Captain). Was fortunate enough to have seen the live twice, once on 1969 and then again in 1970. Mark Mel and Don were the most energetic band on stage the they just drew you in. First saw the in 69 in Tampa preceding Johnny Winter. After Johnny Winter finished the crowd was chanting for GFR to return to the stage. Johnny Winter was visibly upset..
My favorite song in 1973-74...had an 8 tract tape player in my brothers truck. We drove around listening to it in the middle of the night just hanging out with friends.
I can't believe it. I'm in my 50's. As a child I heard this song and several others from Grand Funk Railroad. And some how I thought different bands played all of their songs. I am really enjoying ...hearing GFR!!!! Awsome!
Renaissance Man, it was around 1969 I turned on our "Underground FM radio station" in Los Angeles in the San Fernando valley...and I heard this song "Heartbreaker" that you watched. I heard "Inside looking out" I heard "Mean mistreater" and I immediately got into it the highs and lows the ups and downs, the guitar licks, the drums, the singing, all of it I could feel it in my bones Raw energy the way they could (like you said is it the end yet) they always surprised you and came back again "one more time"! Most of their songs were from 9 minutes to 10 or 11 minutes and live was much longer..never boring always exciting! I immediately went to the Record store to buy anything GFR...they had nothing! So then I got on the freeway and drove all the way to "the city" in Los Angeles and went to tower records. I couldn't find any GFR! I asked for help and they went "on the search" for me and found one album, only one no more left. I grabbed it bought it went home and played it to death. I loved GFR as much as I loved the doors or about even. Then in 71 I grabbed some girl friends and we went to a GFR concert at the Forum. My girlfriends were "clueless" I just brought them along so not to be alone. Within about 20 minutes of GFR playing I was looking at my four GF's doing some serious head banging! I kid you not! One of them was very quiet and shy but she was rocking out and head banging more than any of us! Lol. Driving home our ears rang...and the next day also. Mark was fantastic his guitar work and he was always shirtless onstage with a gold armband on his right arm. He played guitar, harmonica, sang did all of the leads for the songs that he wrote..he does it all onstage effortlessly...the energy and raw power GFR brings to every live performance they did is stunning! In reading a review someone stated that "GFR doesn't need the audience they feel this and play it powerful and connected so well all three of them know exactly what the other is doing but it's so natural they do this because they love it and the audience just brings more power to it...but still raw energy such raw talent...and so glad you liked them. Check "Inside looking out" by GFR..Marks on his own now all these years and he is rockin and playing guitar, harmonica, keyboard, piano, singing even drums at times...thanks for letting me share my story...sorry so long. GFR NEVER got the credit or respect they deserved. I called it "refined snobbery guitar players" syndrome..😎
The reason the song We're an American Band stands out for me so much is for historical reasons. Grand Funk played at Shea Stadium to a packed crowd. The crowd went so crazy over that song that the whole stadium was shaking and the upper mezzanines were visibly moving like a wave. It was featured on the nightly news as engineers had to be brought in and the concert nearly shut down over safety concerns. Now that is rocking out! And yes one of the best drummers of all time.
Saw GFR in Nashville in '73. One of my favorite concerts and bands ever! The version of this song when they were a 3 piece is even better. They were rockers with soul. I'm a 17 year old black kid in '72, listening to WVOL,..a black radio station. Every night, a DJ,"The Seventh Son", would intro his show with this song that had sort of a rocking, raw, funky earthiness to it.We all loved it , but he never said who it was. Later that year, our white friends were playing this album.GRAND FUNK LIVE ! And to my amazement and amusement, there it was, "Inside Looking Out". Please do that one, and please do "I Come Tumblin". Both will give you a real sense of Grand Funk Railroad.(There are no live videos for I Come Tumblin ,but the studio is great.)
I'm glad you enjoyed it brother. I've been In love with these guys since I first heard them in the early 70s. The guitar player, Mark Farner has been a major influence on me Ias a guitar playing. These guys always sold out arenas and never got the recognition they deserved. To this day they are still not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. That is a crying shame. I hope you become a new fan for these guys.
This is a classic, one of best live rock performances ever and one of my personal favorites, thanks for giving this great forgotten band the credit they deserve.
Composer, vocalist supreme, great guitarist and dancer. Mark was incredible. He is half Lakota Sioux and has been recognized by that nation for his contributions and good works.
I w. as a huge fan of GFR in '70 and '71! I would have been 15, 16 at the time with the usual teenage angst a daily part of life. I just started smokin' weed at 15 and music was a big part of my life. GFR to me was one of a group of musicians that put together very powerful 3 pc. powerhouses.
I was blessed to see a concert in my home town from Mark after all the days of famous passed. It was on a Sunday and he was a changed man that day. He didn't wear spandex and he didn't try to be silly. He continued his passion without youthful anger. He represented everything I wanted to hear and I think he wanted it to be heard because he was older and wiser. I enjoyed the show :)
Such a captivating performance ! Takes you into a unique realm of musical expression..the way they change up ..keeps your attention to the point you don't want it to end. That's what's missing in today's music! Unbridled talent set FREE!
Wow, that was just amazing. Back then the talent was crazy good. This has so much layers to it and the singing was great, the playing was great. That drummer is sick.
Back in the mid 1970's, there was a *RADIO REVOLUTION* going on. Top 40 hits were on the AM dial & album rock (longer album cuts) were on the FM dial in stereo. There was *NO MTV.* Just a few late night shows, like The Midnight Special (Friday) & Don Kirshner's Rock Concert (Saturday). This is where most people hear these rock classics songs like Grand Funk's "Heartbreaker".
I used to watch the Midnight Special every Friday night on a little black and white tv that I had in my bedroom. I’d sit really close to that set, with the volume turned down so I wouldn’t wake up my parents. I loved GFR then and I still do!
This was the first song my first band ever played live, way back in the day. At the end of our set, we ran out of songs so when we had to do an encore, we played it again. LOL A classic. Mark Farner is so underrated IMHO.
This was my High School Day's The lead Guitar Graduated from my High school . could hear them practicing across the field from my house. summer of 1974-75
I saw them live at Cobo Hall in Detroit in 1971.. my brother took me to this concert before I left for Vietnam. I’ll never forget this concert.. the opening band was named Bloodrock. Grand Funk put on one hell of a show... great memories during a bad time...
These guys were/are from the area of Flint, Michigan.. the original band of Mark Farner (vocals, lead guitar) Don Brewer (drums/vocals) and Mel Schacher (bass).. this was the band when I saw them at Cobo Hall in Detroit. Some other favorites of mine are “Inside Looking Out” and “Paranoid” by them.. LIVE versions of course. Great Band from a great time!
Hi MRM, You really want to be blown away. Check out Grand funk Railroad - inside looking out 1969. The drummer with the fro also sings with the lead singer. This was an unbelievable performance by all.
Please check out Grand Funk Railroad "Inside Looking Out 1969". Make sure it's the live studio version originally uploaded by 1stGunner on UA-cam. Great performance by Mark, Don and Mel.
Grand Funk was the BIGGEST ROCK BAND in the USA for a brief couple years with many hits and HUGE MASSIVE concerts filling football arenas. They shot to the top very quickly and burned out almost just as quick. BTW that is a 3 piece band making all of that great music.
I remember seeing them in Detroit at Cobo Hall back in early 1975, the lead in band was JAMES BROWN and the James Brown Band!!! What a show that was!!!
You hit the nail on the head!!! When you said it sounded like it was going to end 3 times and each time the song would just keep intensifying untill that great solo.!!! The way that song was written just show's how "Brilliant" Mark Farner was!!! He wrote just about everything for the band. These guys together have made INCREDIBLE Music!!!!
I got to meet Mark Farner a few years ago. He is a very down to earth kind of guy. A true American. He signed and autograph for me an told me a few very cool stories. I hope he continues to go out on the road. His voice is still strong and he is playing as well as he ever has. One of the greats!!
What Don Brewer did with that little drum set is baffling to me.And Mark Farmer’s Voice, energy, etc. is unparalleled.Mel’s bass is so solid.Remember, folks, this is 50 years ago when they were 19 or 20 years old.Well, this is when they wrote it.
They deserve to be in the Rock & Roll HOF. It’s a crime. Thanks for taking me back to high school, in my bedroom, headphones on, volume cranked. Saw them at Eastern Kentucky University in 1974. Loudest concert I’ve ever attended. Permanent hearing damage, but, damn, it was worth it! Great memories!
I like seeing these guys being recognized. From a town I called home for 6 years at the time they were getting started, I know a lot about them. Even met them one time. one group I haven't seen you guys do, is the Doors. Would like to see that.
I appreciate that you played the entire song before commenting. I also love the beginning of this song.My favourite part of this song is near the end you think its over then it becomes this amazing finale of powerful music . I think this is one of the the first songs Mark Farner wrote
The song starts out in a 3/4 timing and then the fast part goes to a 4/4 timing. The band I played in 1971 won 2nd using this song and Grand Funk other song Into The Sun with these 2 songs at the West LA Battle Of The Bands. We were called Ball Rode I was the lead guitarist. Heartbreaker is on their 1st album.
I feel so fortunate to have grown up during the 60's and 70's when groups like Grand Funk Railroad were playing and creating hit after hit. Playing football while in high school in Japan, we played Grand Funk on our boom boxes getting up for our games. Wonderful music and wonderful memories !
I bought GFR's first double LIVE album when I was attending Jr. High School in 1975. They were just a trio at that time and I couldn't get over how much amazing energy they had.
Hey Ty! That performance never gets old. The whole concert at Shea stadium was epic. Check out " Foot stomping music" from same concert. Keep playing and doing GOD'S work. Thank you brother! 🌲🌲 🎼🎼
I Love Grand Funk Railroad! Aimless Lady, Sally, Closer to Home( I'm Your Captain) , Hooked on Love, I don't have to sing the blues, She's a good man's brother, Mean Mistreater, Rock N Roll Soul, Bad Time, Footstompin' Music, and We're an American Band just to name a few. 😁🎸
Donny Brewer had a simple set of drums and made them sound like three drummers playing at once. I was in my late teens when they came out and they were on top of the world, everyone that listened to rock, LOVED them.
Grand Funk - excellent choice, and excellent band - they have so many good songs and albums, especially the first 5, before they went more mainstream. Mark Farner was my main inspiration for learning guitar back in the day, spent hours upon hours practicing along with GFR records. Steeo records were relatively new, and (on the studio albums) the placement of guitars on a dedicated channel, or the bass, made for a unique listening experience. The drummer and bass player (who must have been wearing extra high platform shoes on this video, as he is much shorter than the others) played so well together too, some of the best musicians in rock history. We (fellow band-mates and I) would laughingly refer to the long extended final chord of songs as "Grand Funk ending", as so many of their songs featured that. Would recommend you review more of their music, especially any or all of their 2nd (red) Album "Grand Funk". And, I was lucky enough to see them in their 1998 reunion tour.
I can't wait for this one. I wish I could watch live but I am going to work now. I was going to suggest this song along with Paranoid and Inside Looking Out by Grand Funk. If I get a chance to send you a link from the Simpsons about Grand Funk I will, I think it would be funny if you played it before this song.

Good Job. Really Enjoyed.
GFR was the very first band I ever saw in Concert in 1972. Saw three times after that. Fantastic to see Live.
Used to see these guys practice at free concerts on Sunday afternoons in a park in downtown Flint Michigan when I was 19 in 1969.
So many great bands from that era makes it hard for bands to stand out. But I loved this.
Saw GFR in Nashville in '73. One of my favorite concerts and bands ever! The version of this song when they were a 3 piece is even better. They were rockers with soul. I'm a 17 year old black kid in '72, listening to WVOL,..a black radio station. Every night, a DJ,"The Seventh Son", would intro his show with this song that had sort of a rocking, raw, funky earthiness to it.We all loved it ,
but he never said who it was. Later that year, our white friends were playing this album.GRAND FUNK LIVE ! And to my amazement and amusement, there it was, "Inside Looking Out". Please
do that one, and please do "I Come Tumblin".
One of my favorites from them. Underrated song. Here's another underrated track from them: Sin's a Good Man's Brother
Hell Yeah!
Hells yeah,killer tune!
Love this band. The music of my youth. This band kicked ass and never got the recognition they deserved. Love them. StaySafe&Blessings🦋
Mark Farner! GFR...grew up with their music. True, real, raw talent!
I loved GFR then and I still do!
to me heartbreaker one the MOST underrated ROCK tune all time its got it all blues soulfull
This was the first song my first band ever played live, way back in the day.
At the end of our set, we ran out of songs so when we had to do an encore, we played it again. LOL
A classic. Mark Farner is so underrated IMHO.
One of the best concert bands ever. Just gets better.
If you like this you MUST hear Grand Funk Railroad doing We're An American Band! These guys were HUGE in the 1970s with 2 #1 songs.
YES!
Farners vocals and guitar work..Don Brewers drumming and background vocals. Can't beat it.
45 years ago...1974.
Grand Funk was the BIGGEST ROCK BAND in the USA for a brief couple years with many hits and HUGE MASSIVE concerts filling football arenas. They shot to the top very quickly and burned out almost just as quick. BTW that is a 3 piece band making all of that great music.

LOVED YOUR REACTION. Could tell that you sincerely enjoyed that performance.
Fantastic live performance..no special effects. Pure, tight, dynamic. GFRR is a class among themselves
I remember seeing them in Detroit at Cobo Hall back in early 1975, the lead in band was JAMES BROWN and the James Brown Band!!! What a show that was!!!
So many of their songs are fabulous....been listening to this song since I was 13~
You hit the nail on the head!!! When you said it sounded like it was going to end 3 times and each time the song would just keep intensifying untill that great solo.!!! The way that song was written just show's how "Brilliant" Mark Farner was!!! He wrote just about everything for the band. These guys together have made INCREDIBLE Music!!!!
This was so good that I think my soul left my body . Fantastic
Like I always said, the Mighty Railroad are the masters of the "false finish"--and I LOVE THEM FOR IT!
Some kind of wonderful & I'm your Captain are also great songs by GFR!
1971 Shea Stadium 🏟 my first concert. 15 years old my mother said I couldn’t go. I went they are still one of my favorite bands .
420since1974 Their second live album came out in 1975,their first was in 1970!!
@@timothybrock5922 I know that it was released in 1970. I didn't buy and listen to it until 1975. I know that they became a 4 piece in 1972.
Every Grand Funk Railroad song is an epic performance! There are more videos posted of that same concert which are worth checking out!
I was in my late teens when they came out and they were on top of the world, everyone that listened to rock, LOVED them.
believe it or not .. This is what come from GOOD FLINT WATER!!
Good choice but now we need "Steppenwolf" Magic Carpet Ride
...... or Born To Be Wild !
@@bigbow62 Or The Pusher etc etc etc.
Steppenwolf does a great cover of "Snowblind Friend" also
@@susana5052 I didn't know you watched this channel.
Lol!
This is part of a concert that was released on 12-inch Japanese laserdisc. The rest of it is on UA-cam and definitely worth taking a look at.
GFRR fan since.. Let's just say a very long time, I was about 14! I've always appreciated Mark's talent. Fave of mine is Bad Time, he owns that!
Whoa!!! How have I not heard this song!! I’m blown away!! Loved it😍great choice!
My I recommend you start rolling through their catalogue here at UA-cam. I suspect you'll have about forty brand new favorite songs. Great bsnd.
I love Grand Funk Railroad. This band was fabulous. "I'm Your Captain (Closer to Home)" is one of their move famous songs.
Absolute greatness! Thanks for checking them out.
Hooked on Love
Love this great eye and ear candy THE 70's HAD SO MANY GREAT BANDS BUT GRAND FUNK WAS A TRUE STAND OUT! Thanks MRM!
I wish I could take you back in time to experience one of their concerts. What a time that was...
@ mark wessel...
I cut my teeth to grand funk and many other amazing bands! Great choice!💕
Little Feet, Dixie Chicken
"Oh Atlanta" or "Let it Roll" would be great too
R.I.P. Lowell George. GBNF
Most underrated band ever! Been a fan since '69, my senior year 🤗 Yeah, I'm old(68)! Please check out "Inside Looking Out" and "Mean Mistreater"! Good old rock 'n roll! 😁
Fell in love with it as a kid thanks to my big brother... Love it even more as an adult. Thank you!
My hat's off to you, Sir, for recognizing an awesome rock band! All are awesome musicians, but Mark Farner is the heart and soul of the ORIGINAL Grand Funk Railroad. This farce that's out on the road calling themselves GFR are nothing but a cover band, playing music Mark Farner wrote.
Keep up the good work!
That's Grand Fake Railroad out there performing without Mark!
We road around in a Jeep listening to their live caught in the act album on eight track for a whole summer! Great band!
***ABOUT EFFING TIME FOR ONE OF THE BEST ROCK BANDS EVER*** ..... Then again, im biased as I'm related to Mark Farner (singer) ..... Hard to believe only 3 guys can have this much soul and Mark Is Still On Tour Today!
Mr. Roach The last time I saw Don Brewer was with Bob Seager .

Todd Kelly Yep, most forget Craig Frost!
@@Veggamattic Craig was a part timer and not in the band very long, even Terry Knight was in the band for a short time..... Mark, Don & Mel are a POWER TRIO
AWESOME BAND .. “Mean mistreater” was 14 .. when I first heard this song. 1970
Great reaction to a great track. Loved GFR from the first time I bought the album. Many other wonderful tracks as well. Thanks for not stopping it 20 times............Dr G
Grand Funk Railroad was the first concert I ever attended way back in 1971. They tore it up. Mark Farner played from one side of the stage to the other, must have had a 100 foot cord on the guitar (no remote back then).
