I have been watching this video for years. I can even count how many times I've seen it. And yes that part when Donald O'Conner, Debbie Reynolds and Gene Kelly are jumping on couches, it's from the movie Singin' In The Rain, is awesome. The amount of time and effort it took to create this is incredible. It's not just about the editing and the movements going in time to the beat of this song but the creator actually set it up in categories as well. They synced multiple tap dancers, dancing on the tables, dancing in a large group, dancing on the stairs, with the canes, doing the splits, etc. It is by far my favorite video on UA-cam. Good to see people reacting to it.
You can't really complain about them not dancing to the beat since they weren't dancing to this song. Considering the time of the performance and the more current song -- this was terrifically synched. Kudos to the editor.
Don't get me wrong, I love your reactions, but you have to appreciate the incredible editing, and patience that the producer had to create this video. I can't imagine. I watch this video whenever I spot it because it's really a little work of art.
I highly recommend "Rita Hayworth is Staying Alive". Dance clips from Rita's movies to the BeeGees tune. That was the first vid of this kind that I saw and it is REALLY good.
Reminds me of the old joke: "Who was a better dancer, Astaire or Ginger Rogers? Fred Astaire was incredible, but Ginger did everything he did. Backwards. In high heels."
Fred Astaire always did his bet to help his partners look good. He was down to earth, not flashy, considered himself an old-fashioned "hoofer". Frankly, I think his best work was solo, because he could be more inventive & show what he could do without limiting himself to what his partner could match.
Dude, lets see YOU put together all of these movie clips from the early 20's on up to about the 50's and match the dance moves to the music as well. I was seriously impressed!
Those guys, doing the splits down the stairs, are the Nicholas Brothers. They were an incredible dance team. It is taken from an old movie. The song in the movie is called Jumpin Jive - Cab Callaway and the Nicholas Brothers. Please react to it. I promise you will be amazed.
I am 42 and I was introduced to the Golden Era Hollywood by my grandparents. The Golden Era is still my favorite. Too bad Hollywood has gone down the dumps (with a few exceptions, of course).😀
Old Hollywood used to respect their audience(s). Today's Hollywood only respect themselves, and are only looking for the approval of their peers. Many of these old movies where made at the height of the depression or World War 2. Today, many of us live at the height of world prosperity - but Hollywood only shows contempt for the people and country which created it.
Yes, because you were forced to, by contract. People today don't realize how utterly draconian those studio contracts were. The studio ruled your entire life, you had to do the movies they got for you, and you were basically working all the time, if not on a film then on training and classes.
It's true some of the clips are off beat, but that's because they're literally dancing to music pieces with different timing measure signatures and different styles of dance. It's amazing work the way they put it together.
the woman in the top hat who was being flipped over by two lines of male dancers is Eleanor powell . the clip is taken from her dance routine to the song fascinating rhythm. if anyone here hasn't watched that then I strongly recommend it. she is a fantastic dancer.
I think it would've taken a lot of hard work for whoever edited those old movies dance scenes to this great song. Don't think he gave them enough credit.
Rita Hayworth, Frank Sinatra, Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, Debbie Reynolds, Ginger Rogers, Laurel and Hardy, The Marx Brothers, Bill “Bojangles Robinson, Shirley Temple and so many more....... You have to remember they are dancing to other music so they really aren’t off beat.
The gentleman that was coming down the stairs, was the great James Cagney. He was a remarkable actor and dancer. Who took his career into his own hands, which was unheard of back in those days. You were owned by the studios. And he refused to me owned.
Seriously, keep them with the beat of this song? This person has culled videos from different eras and meshed it with a modern song. The sheer talent and patient necessary to do that is incredible. No one expects it to be perfectly meshed to the beat. Sorry, it took you out, but that's a monumental feat.
Thank you for that. One of my favorite youtube videos. I am a 68 year old male and it takes me back to the old tv musicals. So many celebs I immediately recognized. Shirley Temple, Bill Bojangles Robinson, Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor, Debbie Reynolds, Mickey Rooney, Ann Miller, Rita Heyworth, Grouch Marx, Abbot and Costello, Ginger Rodgers, and more. If you want a video for your comedy selection, do a youtube search on, Foster Brooks roast Don Rickles. Makes me LOL every time I view it.
Love the song. It will drive you crazy once it's in your head. Love the editing. So many familiar faces. And I think what I love best -- The Joy that dancing brings. Just have to smile while you watch it.
Most of these people were dead long before Uptown Funk was even a thought. What fun. Tough editing job using old film from many eras. It’s one of those things you just enjoy!!
I adore this video and never get tired of that song. Whoever collabed this is a pro. I cant imagine the time it took to put all that together. I remember watching some of those old musicals with my momma when I was a little girl. And Shirley Temple was my favorite. She danced with some wonderful dancers. Love tap dancing. I even remember the movie with the dancing and the couch. LOL
Enjoy your stuff! The splits performed on the stairs were done by the late great Nicholas Brothers from the movie "Stormy Weather" Lena Horne's rendition of Stormy Weather was just flat out gorgeous. You should look them up to see the full performance. That may be the greatest dance scene ever filmed.
I watch this one frequently one of my favorites the person who put this together did an awesome job. So many great entertainers that have long past on.
Oh the Nicholas Brothers! They were phenomenal! Also the two dancers that closed the video (Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire) were both amazing dancers. You should check out their movies. You won't be bored.
flying down to Rio. Ginger and Fred were billed fourth and fifth, but once they got up on top of the piano and started dancing, it was all over. their next movie together they had top billing
Those are all legendary stars. They don't make them like that anymore. Love how they even included Laurel and Hardy. My comedy heros! If you want a good laugh Ty, watch some of their videos. You'll lol, trust me. 😄

The black guy dancing on stairway with Shirley Temple was Bill Robinson. Otherwise known as “Bojangles” A lot of Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire on there. I think I seen bing crosby and Danny Kaye. Used to watch these with my mom. Movies were so good back then.
There's a story I heard about Gene Kelly having the flue during the famous dance scene from "singing in the rain", with a high fever and still pulled out one of the greatest dance sequences in history.
Every time this pops up I have to watch, can you imagine how long it took to find all those old clips that matched parts of the song and them put them all together? Wow.

Actually it looked like some were from the 50s also. That means there was almost thirty years of movies to choose from and musicals were very popular during that time so there was no shortage of clips to chose from. The hardest part would be deciding which clips to use and finding digital copies. Or maybe just finding digital copies of movie and then just picking from those. That and waiting for it to render. With the software, clipping fractions of a second here or there to fit in clips is not that hard. And the creator gets to decide which change ups to highlight with which clips. I'm sure this didn't take long after getting enough dance clips to cover four minutes. I'd be surprised if they took an hour doing the editing.
@Vicki Lee I think what he meant was the dancing didn’t sync perfectly with the beat of the song. It doesn’t matter, the dancing was perfectly on beat with the original songs. I was thrilled to see Fred Astaire so heavily featured, he's one of my all time favorites. 💕
Yes, I love this video and I also couldn't believe those two not only doing the splits down the stairs but then off the balcony! An interesting thing about Shirley Temple and Bo Jangles in that there were those in the studio (back in those days) who didn't think she should hold a black man's hand and from what i understand, she pretty much demanded that she was going to hold his hand and that was that. There are some great dancing sequences with the two of them that have gone down in history.
the story I heard was that movies like this where there were black performers were shot so that the scenes with black performers could be edited out of the movie any it wouldn't effect the flow of the movie. YMMV
Sad he was her friend and went to us loving God and she didn't care about Hollywood and cares about what other thinks but she care for him she loved him so she helping others and she loves her best friend that she was dancing with
Bojangles (seen dancing w/ shirley temple) choreographed hundreds of dancers & movie films. Shirley Temple movie moguls hired Bojangles 2 teach her. The studios had 2 beg him 2 b in the movies. He liked shirley & she liked him that's why he is in so many temple movies. They r said 2 have had fun dancing when not filming ....how's that 4 watching TCM 4 a year!
I just LOVE watching you watch videos that I've either seen that are older, but it was a pure pleasure to see you watch the old movie stars from so many musicals and comment on them. You are a MEGA cut above the rest who are doing "reaction" videos. Thank you for quietly reacting and just letting the video or song keep going without interruption. I just love to watch your expressions. That's such a treat. God bless YOU in Jesus' Name.
and no one is saying Judy Garlands name and she is in at least 1/4 of the clips! Ann Miller,Debbie Reynolds,Eleanor Powell ,Louise Brooks from the 20's is in there too!
Did you recognize the blonde woman between the two men jumping on the sofa? This was from the wonderful movie "Singing in the Rain." The woman was singer, actress Debbie Reynolds, mother of Carrie Fisher (Star Wars). Their devotion was so strong, they died within a day of each other.
Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly are two of my favourite dancers of all time!!. Glad they included Judy Garland, the Nicholas brothers, Ginger Rogers, Eleanor Powell, sooo many wonderful dancers, way too many too list.
Glad to see someone who knows who many of these artists are - my sister is a dance teacher in L.A. - so she is the first one that sent me this compilation - which led me to look more into the Nicholas Brothers.. (okay, I had heard of them and seen a few clips...) -- but this is one of the best - and also I think where they took the short clip for this video... ua-cam.com/video/fNKRm6H-qOU/v-deo.html
This is a great video; I’ve seen it before. Glad you enjoyed. You saw some of the greats like Fred Astaire and Ginger Roger. Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds and Donald O’Connor were the ones who did the sofa scene, and the one dancing with the cartoon mouse was Gene Kelly. The little girl dancing with Bill Bojangles Robinson was indeed Shirley Temple. Many of those were well before the 60s. Some were in the 30s or the 40s. Great discovery; great job!
Those old movie star/dancers like Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, Gene Kelly and especially Shirley Temple, remind me of watching those OLD movies with my mom. She really loved dancing. Even as a teenager, when my friends would come over, she would dance with them. They loved her for it...
The talent that went into the original movies is incredible. The time, patience and love that it took to make this vid is crazy. Probably the closest we'll get to a musical dance movie now. 🙄
Got it. You're so right. My dad was a ballroom dance instructor and I learned how to dance by standing on his feet when I was very very young. He said to be able to dance well, you have to feel the music.
Awesome video. Loved this one. Fred Astaire is in most of the clips. He was a Great dancer/singer/ actor. He's the one that got me started on watching old movies when I was a teen. :)
Yeah, Fred Astaire was fabulous. One of the early moguls described him by saying, "Dances a little, can't sing," or something like that. Guess whose name is remembered.
a little Hollywood trivia - starting at the 3:17 mark here features a scene from "Singing in the Rain" with the lady and 2 men dancing, rolling, jumping over the sofa/couches. That lady is a young Debbie Reynolds in her 1st film as a main female lead character. A few years later, she has a daughter named Carrie Fisher, who would grow up to play Princess Leia in the Star Wars films. :-)
Those guys jumping were the Nicholas Brothers - two of the greatest dancers in history. It's worth looking them up and watching that whole routine. The fact that it's done to Cab Caloway's orchestra just makes it that much better.
What a great video, timing just right, and the the last three guys, jumping down and doing the splits... then getting up and continue to dance. Wow, I could not even imagine how wrong that could have gone!
Love this video. The man who produced the video, writes books re: old movies etc. They're on Amazon. His editing skills are great! Love your reaction. Just subbed. Thanks so much.
This video is the work of a genius. Perfectly synced. Perfect compilation. Let's be honest - the choreography in those old movies is a lot more entertaining and talented than today's twerking bare-assed MTV chicks.
I really enjoy your videos! I love watching your facial expressions while you are watching the videos.very much appreciate the way you find more things to praise than to criticize. Love that you are a Christian and how you share that. God bless you and keep you close in His loving care.
Some of the best dancers ever in movies. The Nicholas Brothers were the ones that did the splits down the stairs - amazing. There were a lot of the greatest screen dancers ever in this video!
@@Shenanigan5 Mary Poppins was not in that video. Here is a quote from the maker of the video: "The idea was to do the same for movies from the Golden Age - meaning no title later than 1953 (although there is one at the end.) Oh, and none of these clips was sped up or slowed down." The one at the end they are referring to is the before and now clip of Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire shaking hands. The ‘now’ being 1976 . :)
No, that's the beauty of the video. Most of the steps of the dancers do sync with the song. This video has to be watched numerous times to appreciate the skill to pull it off.
Those takes were taken from movie classics. Some were incredibly sophisticated for their time, such as Fred Estair dancing on the ceiling or Gene Kelley dancing with a cartoon.
Hi, Ty! This is such an amazing video. I've loved this one for a very long time and I'm glad you reacted to it! I have to give mad kudos to the person who created this amazingly fun video because I'm sure this took a long time to put together! WOW! Thanks for another great reaction! Merry Christmas and God Bless! ❤️ Laura
It is very hard to imagine modern day actors doing those moves, or any moves for that matter be it George Clooney, Matt Damon not to mention those guys in the endless line of superhero - movies. Patrick Swayze (RIP) and John Travolta are the only ones who cross to mind immediately.
onsese joo - Back in those days they were trained to Sing, Act, and Dance. That's why you see so many of them that could do all three back in the 30's and 40's.
@@sylviacarlson3561 But of course there was Clark Gable in Gone With The Wind who was as agile as a wooden horse. So they built a platform with wheels to get him going on the dancefloor.
FYI... the clip where you said "that was good" is from "Singin in the Rain" the best musical MGM ever made. The woman is Debbie Reynolds who later became the mother of Carrie Fisher, who played Princess Lea in Star Wars. Both died within 2 days of each other...
Hey Renaisanceman, you made a comment a couple of minutes into the video that they're off beat. I've really enjoyed this video before. The funny thing, I've noticed that too mistiming as well. However, I don't know if it was a recording issue in the original, but when I watched your's (rerecording) the "off-beat" wasn't there. Very nice.
Of course I missed some. Jinny Durantr, Buddly Ebsen, James Cagney, Frank Sinatra, Oh, and every time I see the Nicholas Brothers jumping from the balcony to the floor, it makes me cringe too. That has to have hurt.
I'm sure every male who watches that jump by the Nicholas Brothers cringes as well. I certainly do. No woman could fully understand - fortunately for them.
@@hebneh It was a Jazz split. If you watch this again, watch the back leg. It's bent, so both their legs didn't land flat on the floor. This prevented them from injuring themselves. The Nicolas Brothers were in many musicals back then and it wouldn't make sense to risk having them hurt.
I have been watching this video for years. I can even count how many times I've seen it. He liked shirley & she liked him that's why he is in so many temple movies. They r said 2 have had fun dancing when not filming ....how's that 4 watching TCM 4 a year!
lol, I still try to kick the stairs like that!
coming down the stairs was jimmy cagney a national treasure playing george m cohen in yankee doodle dandy
I appreciate the energy of these dancers! Especially love the scenes on stairs.
The editing in this video was just as excellent as the dancing.
I could name every dancers as they appeared
The talent that went into the original movies is incredible.
The time, patience and love that it took to make this vid is crazy.
Probably the closest we'll get to a musical dance movie now. 🙄
That was so cool to watch. As always you entertain...thank you and keep up the good work!
master editing skills...much respect!
Love the song and how the song got with old movie flicks .
a little Hollywood trivia - starting at the 3:17 mark here features a scene from "Singing in the Rain" with the lady and 2 men dancing, rolling, jumping over the sofa/couches.
Whoever made the video to this song done an amazing job, all in sync with the music.
This video is the work of a genius. Perfectly synced. Perfect compilation. Let's be honest - the choreography in those old movies is a lot more entertaining and talented than today's twerking bare-assed MTV chicks.
✨ THANK YOU ✨ Nobody was dancing half naked, nobody sag they pants and nobody called anybody else a N word!
They really used to be some of the best dancers. Classy and masterful
I really enjoy your videos! I love watching your facial expressions while you are watching the videos.very much appreciate the way you find more things to praise than to criticize. Love that you are a Christian and how you share that. God bless you and keep you close in His loving care.
I honestly believe, it's impossible to have a bad day, listening to this song!
Some of the best dancers ever in movies. The Nicholas Brothers were the ones that did the splits down the stairs - amazing. There were a lot of the greatest screen dancers ever in this video!
Love this compilation. Couldn't click fast enough to see how you react. Great reactions. Been binging your reactions.
There is a really good one out there with Fred Astaire doing Smooth Criminal.
Definitely no 60s, 70s or 80s in that video, 30s and 40's, possibly early 50s.
Mary Poppins was in there, that was 64
@@Shenanigan5 Mary Poppins was not in that video. Here is a quote from the maker of the video:
"The idea was to do the same for movies from the Golden Age - meaning no title later than 1953 (although there is one at the end.) Oh, and none of these clips was sped up or slowed down."
The one at the end they are referring to is the before and now clip of Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire shaking hands. The ‘now’ being 1976
. :)
If you watch the original video with closed caption turned on, it shows the movie title and year of each clip. :)
No, that's the beauty of the video. Most of the steps of the dancers do sync with the song. This video has to be watched numerous times to appreciate the skill to pull it off.
Loved that. Love the Nicholas Brothers.
yes tye those were the
nicholas bro.were featured with glenn miller movies
LOVE THIS VIDEO. AND SONG.
ALSO LOVE HOW WHEN YOU GET ECCITED OVER A VIDEO, YOU SCRATCH THE BACK OF YOUR HEAD. IRS SO CUTE
I never disagree with you except on this video. It is incredible. Keep up the good work. You are also incredible.
LOVE this fun song! It's actual clip from old movies from 1930's through 1980's rendition of old musicals.
That was great!1 I grew up watching old movies..TCM is one of my favorite channels..lol
Those takes were taken from movie classics. Some were incredibly sophisticated for their time, such as Fred Estair dancing on the ceiling or Gene Kelley dancing with a cartoon.
Someone give the creator of this video a friggin' OSCAR for Best Editing!
I have watched this video so many times. Great editing job. Awesome.
you are my new addiction!!! I enjoy your videos and I am really enjoying seeing all you have posted.
The guys doing the big jumps and splits were the Nicholas Brothers I believe.
"Capital Cities - Safe And Sound" is another video like this, and I loved both.
i like that one too! you should check out Say Hi - Take Ya Dancin' if you like both of these :D
4:42 When my Mom shouts "Dinner's ready!"
This is such a cool video.glad you got to see it
Hey Renaisanceman, you made a comment a couple of minutes into the video that they're off beat.
Do you mean Jimmy Durante?
I'm sure every male who watches that jump by the Nicholas Brothers cringes as well. I certainly do. No woman could fully understand - fortunately for them.
@@hebneh It was a Jazz split. If you watch this again, watch the back leg. It's bent, so both their legs didn't land flat on the floor. This prevented them from injuring themselves. The Nicolas Brothers were in many musicals back then and it wouldn't make sense to risk having them hurt.
@@sylviacarlson3561 They also used their hands to cushion the impact when they land.
Some of the greatest talented stars ever
There's several video's out there of people dancing to Leo Sayer's Long Tall Glasses, very good song with piano and banjo.
